Perspectives Of Interactions With Healthcare Providers Among Patients Who Are Blind, Nazanin M. Heydarian, Allyson S. Hughes, Osvaldo F. Morera, Ashley S. Bangert, Angela H. Frederick
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Healthcare providers’ (HCPs) stereotypes about the incompetence of blind and low-vision patients may lead them to patronize blind patients, over-focus on impairments, and neglect the presenting problem. The content of perceived HCP stereotypes about blind patients in the clinical setting was examined from the patient perspective with seven focus groups, including a total of 42 individual participants. Most participants reported an interaction when their HCPs treated them as if they were incompetent, and discussed how perceived evaluations of their warmth and competence impacted whether their HCPs trusted and respected them. Participants also discussed their evaluations of their HCPs’ warmth and …
From Full Irish To Freespace: Irish Architecture In The Twenty-First Century, Brian Ward
From Full Irish To Freespace: Irish Architecture In The Twenty-First Century, Brian Ward
Books/Book chapters
This chapter examines Irish architecture during the Celtic Tiger boom years, the crash, and the eventual economic recovery. Using representations of Irish architecture such as the book, Full Irish, and the Architecture Biennale, FREESPACE, it concentrates on the architectural practices (such as Grafton Architects and O’Donnell + Tuomey) that were the focus of international interest during this period but places their work in the midst of the country’s broader spatial production. Using imagery of ghost estates, it also examines the emergence of a distinct post-Celtic Tiger mode of architecture evident in projects such as Commonage.

The state of African American romantic love and marriage has garnered increased scrutiny over the last 20 years, sparking great attention among scholarly studies, pop culture, and mainstream media to combat marriage decline. African American literature offers a complex view of marriage and romantic love via the works of Zora Neale Hurston as early as the 1930s that predates other studies. Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God and Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick are the catalysts for understanding black romantic love, questions of marriage, and concerns about black male and female relationships then and now. A close …
Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes
Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The high prevalence of conditions among adolescents such as anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide has become a global concern. Given the growing rates of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems at the onset of adolescence, researchers have begun to find interest in identifying associations that account for dysfunctional patterns and problem behaviors. Findings suggest that these negative psychological and behavioral outcomes could be linked to exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and household dysfunction. The present study investigated associations between ACEs, difficulties in emotion regulation, and problem behaviors among a sample of 43 adolescents age 11-17 …

Comics and graphic novels, as well as comics studies courses, are being increasingly recognized as important multimodal texts in higher education. Medically themed comics and graphic novels, or graphic medicine texts, however, have not been used as frequently as the basis for course offerings, and there is a need for them to be used and for their significance to be studied. This dissertation advocates for the inclusion of graphic medicine in college curricula because of its ability to demonstrate and facilitate agency. As my readings of graphic medicine texts and my pedagogical explorations indicate, medically themed graphic texts express themes of …
Les Jardins Exotiques: Early French Romanticism And Its Impact On Travel Inspired Nineteenth-Century French Gardens, Kyra Kalina Sanchez Clapper
Les Jardins Exotiques: Early French Romanticism And Its Impact On Travel Inspired Nineteenth-Century French Gardens, Kyra Kalina Sanchez Clapper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The question of French literatures portrayal of the environment has been widely debated in the ecocriticism field, with scholars such as Douglas Boudreau and Marnie Sullivan arguing that ecocriticism is predominately focused on literature written in English. In order to further our understanding of French environmental writing, we need to understand how the literary side of French Romanticism has influenced scientific advances that took place in late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century France. This project addresses the issue of Chateaubriands gardens at Valle aux Loups and his later, non-fictional work Voyage en Amrique (1827). Although he was not the first French author …

The Fertility Figurine Problem: Reinterpreting Ancient Egyptian Paddle Dolls, Faience, And Ceramic Female Figurines, Amanda Jane Shaffery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this dissertation is to better understand the role of female figurines in ancient Egypt. Through the use of several key example types, paddle dolls, faience female figurines (Pinchs Type 1), and ceramic female figurines (Pinchs Type 2 and 3), the differences in use and function of these objects is discussed. These objects have previously been categorized as fertility figurines; however, as this dissertation demonstrates not all female figurines function in the same manner. Furthermore, this dissertation makes use of feminist and gender theory to formulate questions concerning the role of female figurines in ancient Egypt and the …

The goddesses in the Hypostyle Hall in Karnak reflect specific patterns of iconographic meaning that are illuminated via the use of statistics. The syncretization of the goddesses in the hall is quite evident using the data that is presented in this dissertation. The vulture headdress, papyrus staff and the Eye of Re motif among others are acting as signifiers that identify the various goddesses at Thebes as avatars of Mut.By combining these elements, it clearly points to their shared affinity with Mut, and the harnessing of their collective power made their regenerative function and their roles in the continual renewal of …

From Overt Threat To Invisible Presence: Discursive Shifts In Representations Of Gender In Menstrual Product Advertising, Valerie Gannon, Olivia Freeman, Rachel Campbell
Articles
The menstrual product brand ‘Always’ and its #LikeAGirl campaign has made headlines for being at the forefront of a menstrual liberation, championing female empowerment and gender equality. This paper utilises a visual discourse analysis approach (Rose, 2016) to explore the discursive shifts in ‘Always’ advertisements over the past four decades. Specifically, the question as to how the construction of menstruation has changed over time in the advertising discourse of the ‘Always’ brand is addressed. Three dominant discourses of menstruation are identified: overt threat, uncontrollable and invisible. These discourses function as strong claims to truth as they reach the everyday life …

Beholding a comic is ideally, a pleasure. The work informs, entertains and stimulates the mind in some way. There is no gainsaying which works will affect which beholders howsoever it does, yet the expectation of pleasure from a work of comics makes beholders seek it. Making the comic is also a pleasure, even if the process can be long-winded, winding and difficult. The maker wants to give others the same pleasure they drew from beholding comics, but in their way, making their vision of Batman, Lieutenant Blueberry or, their own story worlds. What this research seeks to explain are many …
What’S In A Name? Applying The Syndemic Perspective To Covid-19 In Ireland, Chris O'Ralaigh
What’S In A Name? Applying The Syndemic Perspective To Covid-19 In Ireland, Chris O'Ralaigh
Articles
The term pandemic, pro-offers a vision of COVID-19 abstracted from its social, economic, and political context, suggesting a socially neutral phenomena framed within a medicalised discourse. An etymological and theoretical re-conceptualisation of COVID-19 as a syndemic re-situates the virus within these contexts, allowing an interrogation of the oft-stated claim, discussed in this journal (Nolan, 2020) that ‘we are all in this together’ and a deeper analysis of the viruses impact on particular social groupings. Several recent articles have posited that the syndemic label applies to COVID-19 at an international level (Bambra et al., 2020; Hill et al., 2020; Horton, 2020) …

Race, Risk, And Personal Responsibility In The Response To Covid-19, Aziza Ahmed, Jason Jackson
Faculty Scholarship
The COVID-19 crisis has tragically revealed the depth of racial inequities in the United States. This Piece argues that the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on racial minorities is a symptom of a failing approach to public health, one that privileges individual behaviors over the structural conditions that generate vulnerability and inequitable health outcomes. Despite clear racial disparities in illness and deaths, the neoliberal ideology of personal responsibility shifts the onus for mitigation of risk away from the social and legal determinants of health and onto the individual. To understand how and why these disparate racial outcomes arise, this Piece …

COVID-19 created a support problem for public universities across the United States and required that IT departments and professionals alter how they performed in 2020, and perhaps beyond. IT professionals tasked with safeguarding large amounts of data were required to shift to a teleworking posture to continue offering a similar level of service as previously expected. In addition to the technological shift that organizations experienced because of COVID-19, leadership challenges also impacted IT departments across the United States. The rapid shift of operational duties has the propensity to increase technology-related stress, due to employee perception of being successful in their …

Educative Power And The Respectful Curricular Inclusion Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Music, Michael Webb, Clint Bracknell
Educative Power And The Respectful Curricular Inclusion Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Music, Michael Webb, Clint Bracknell
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This chapter argues for the full, respectful curricular inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music in order to promote a more balanced and equitable social and cultural vision of the nation-state in Australian schools. It challenges views that claim Indigenous cultures have been irretrievably lost or are doomed to extinction, as well as the fixation on musical authenticity. We propose that the gradual broadening of Indigenous musical expressions over time and the musical renaissance of the new millennium have created an unprecedented opportunity for current music educators to experience the educative power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music. …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Ibogaine is a psychoactive alkaloid contained in the West African plant Tabernanthe iboga. Although preliminary, evidence suggests that ibogaine could be effective in the treatment of certain substance use disorders, specifically opioid use disorder. This narrative review concentrated on the pharmacological, cultural and psychological aspects of ibogaine that contribute to its reputed effectiveness with a specific focus on the ibogaine state of consciousness. Although the exact pharmacological mechanisms for ibogaine are still speculative, the literature highlighted its role as an NMDA antagonist in the effective treatment of substance use disorders. The cultural aspects associated with the use of ibogaine pose …
Weather Bodies: Experimenting With Dance Improvisation In Environmental Education In The Early Years, Jo Pollitt, Mindy Blaise, Tonya Rooney
Weather Bodies: Experimenting With Dance Improvisation In Environmental Education In The Early Years, Jo Pollitt, Mindy Blaise, Tonya Rooney
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper reports on insights gained from incorporating dance improvisation into a broader early years environmental education ethnographic research project. Findings are reported from a two-day workshop where a dancer was invited to work with young children to attune to the weather through their bodies. In these workshops, the practice of dance improvisation was used as a deliberate interference to disrupt the disconnected and disembodied ways in which weather is often taught to young children. The paper argues that when children attune with weather through the embodied and relational practice of dance improvisation, this challenges the common practice of learning …

Digital Labour And Temporal Priorities Within A Secondary School, Nicola F. Johnson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Digital devices and ubiquitous online access contribute to the nature and amount of digital labour conducted by school staff. Drawing on more than 40 interviews with staff at one Australian secondary school, the general nature of this digital labour is presented, then Clancy’s notion of temporal autonomous spaces is introduced and applied to theorise why some teachers used digital technologies constantly in their teaching. The article highlights how some teachers invested their time in learning about and using digital technologies because it enhanced their sense of autonomy and increased their sense of freed time. It theorises how teachers who invest …

Posthuman Dignity And The Problem Of The Body, Zachary R. Calo
Posthuman Dignity And The Problem Of The Body, Zachary R. Calo
Scholarly Works
This essay examines the anthropology of transhumanist and posthumanist thought, focusing on human dignity and the role of embodiment. It posits that posthumanism views the body as a barrier to achieving dignity rather than an intrinsic site of dignity, advocating for transcending biological limits towards a more dignified existence. The discourse contrasts transhumanist and bioconservative perspectives on dignity, emphasizing that dignity is not an inherent trait but is achieved through technological enhancement and the redefinition of embodiment, impacting contemporary ethical considerations in biotechnology.

Anticipating Elite Capture: The Social Devaluation Of Municipal Tap Water Users In The Phoenix Metropolitan Area, Alexandra Brewis, Katie Meehan, Melissa Beresford, Amber Wutich
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Characterizing subcultural models of tap water derived from interviews from 154 respondents in four neighbourhoods in the urban Southwestern United States, we identify sources of public discourses that support and anticipate passive elite capture. In accord with predictions, social devaluation of those who use tap water is situated with residents of a privileged exclusive community sector. This suggests the value of a broader conceptualization and an empirical model of elite capture in water resources: not just as a physical deviation of resources, but also as a discursive devaluation of public resources by specifically elite populations.

Incorporating stakeholder engagement into environmental management may help in the pursuit of novel approaches for addressing complex water resource problems. However, evidence about how and under what circumstances stakeholder engagement enables desirable changes remains elusive. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework for studying social and environmental changes possible through stakeholder engagement in water resource management, from inception to outcomes. We synthesize concepts from multiple literatures to provide a framework for tracing linkages from contextual conditions, through engagement process design features, to social learning, community capacity building, and behavioral change at individual, group, and group network levels, and ultimately …

While a great deal of public scrutiny has focused on how information circulates through online outlets including Twitter and Facebook, less attention has been devoted to how more traditional institutions traffic in factual assertions for the sake of setting a particular distributional agenda into motion.[1] Of these more traditional institutions, courts play a central role in legitimating legal and factual claims in the process of applying and clarifying legal rules. In public health-related adjudication, courts play at least two important roles: first, judges and juries make decisions between competing sets of public health and medical claims and second, courts …

The cultural and spiritual significance of nature has been defined as the spiritual, cultural, inspirational, aesthetic, historic and social meanings, values, feelings, ideas and associations that natural features and nature in general have for past, present and future generations of people – both individuals and groups. These guidelines respond to a growing need to make conservation more inclusive, effective and socially just by accommodating multiple worldviews; by treating natural and cultural heritage as interlinked; and by suggesting ways for engaging and empowering all relevant groups and stakeholders in protected area design, governance and management. The guidelines also assist with creating …

Important Attributes Of A Behaviorally-Based Coaching Culture, Sarah M. Eustice
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Professional coaching is still considered an emerging field. Over the past 30 years, professional coaches and researchers have worked to further this profession by developing coaching competencies, exploring the nuances between various coaching modalities, and developing models to explain the role of coaching in organizations. There remains, however, a dearth of literature on coaching culture, including limited agreement on what it is and how it should look in an organization.
This study aims to establish agreement by investigating the confluence of coaching culture definitions and models present in industry and scholarly literature, and garnering input from a sample of professionals …
