Reclaiming Black And Indigenous Ecologies On Block Island Through Oral History And Ethnography, Adrian Cato Jan 2021

Reclaiming Black And Indigenous Ecologies On Block Island Through Oral History And Ethnography, Adrian Cato

Open Access Master's Theses

Public memory on Block Island largely ignores Black and Indigenous labor, life, and legacy. Reclaiming the past and present narratives of Black and Indigenous peoples on Block Island challenges historical erasure; their experiences can then become a meaningful part of the collective public memory of the region. Black and Indigenous women are a key aspect of erased and reclaimed memory, often tasked with maintaining place for their families over generations, upholding their connection to their land and their history - depended upon to maintain and pass down tradition. Developing new memory worlds would mean recognizing the contributions of Black-Indigenous peoples, …

Socio-Cultural Changes In New England Lobster Fisheries: Policy, Perspective, And Community In Midcoast Maine, Melanie Nash

Open Access Master's Theses

The Maine lobster industry is not only the most valuable local export, but also a part of the state’s culture and identity. Lobster fisheries in Maine are currently facing a number of struggles. These include environmental issues like climate change and warming water temperatures in the Gulf of Maine. These changes are leading to the movement of the lobster population, which in turn is changing how the lobster industry functions. There are also policy changes being proposed right now that could have serious implications for the lobster fishery. Notably, these include new offshore wind development in the Gulf of Maine …

The Impact Of Forced Migration On The Antebellum Enslaved Family On The Cotton Frontier, Micki Yvonne Kaleta Jan 2021

The Impact Of Forced Migration On The Antebellum Enslaved Family On The Cotton Frontier, Micki Yvonne Kaleta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the movement of enslaved people in the antebellum United States from the Upper South to the cotton frontier of the Deep South and the impact that forced relocation had on family formation over time. This move took an entire generation of slaves and artificially placed them together, often with little thought of their desires or needs. Slaves, typically young and strong of back wherein to manage the extreme labor demands of cotton cultivation, often did not have the benefit of older family members with which to learn and gain generational knowledge in the early years of the …

Difference And Demand: Toward A Levinasian Psychopathology, Edward Anthony Lenzo Jan 2021

Difference And Demand: Toward A Levinasian Psychopathology, Edward Anthony Lenzo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is an attempt to approach psychopathology from a broadly Levinasian perspective. I do so by situating concerns and insights raised by Emmanuel Levinas relative to phenomenological and 4e (embodied, embedded, extended, enactive) approaches to psychology, cognitive science, and psychopathology. There has been some recent take-up of Levinas by these approaches, but it has remained somewhat superficial or otherwise inaccurate. It is my position that Levinas concepts of expression as a fundamentally social, ethical, and asymmetric relation, embodiment as sensitive exposure to and enjoyment of the world, and subjectivity as the substitution of ones own existence for the other, …

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo Jan 2021

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The power and ability of corporations to assert their First Amendment rights to the detriment of others remains both a controversial and unresolved issue. Adverting to relevant strands of existing jurisprudence and certain constitutionally relevant factors, this Article suggests a solution. The path turns upon the recognition that whereas some corporations are appropriately categorized as rights-bearing entities (akin to associations), others are more appropriately categorized as "entities against which the rights of individuals can be asserted." Legislation, in the form of the draft "CENSOR" Act, is provided as a means by which to implement this categorization. What hopefully emerges is …

College Students "Coupling Up" With Reality Dating Shows: The Interpersonal Relationships Fostered By Reality Dating Show Viewership, Juliana Romeo

Scripps Senior Theses

On college campuses across the US on Monday evenings, groups of college students cluster around laptops and dorm lounge TVs to watch The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. Viewership of reality dating shows is clearly a popular social activity among students, but why? What needs are college students fulfilling with their viewership of this genre? This thesis explores college students’ relationship with reality dating shows and specifically how college students connect the realities of the contestants, the media space, and their everyday lives. Over nine months, I conducted ethnographic interviews and focus groups with twenty-one college students at residential colleges …

Migrating Genes: Using Adna And Archaeological Data To Explain Migration In The Casas Grandes Region Of Northern Mexico, Meradeth Snow, Michael T. Searcy

Faculty Publications

Migration as an archaeological topic has addressed huge distances, such as the colonization of the Americas, as well as smaller regions, such as the peopling of specific sites. The use of genetics as a medium to enhance our understanding of population movement can be an asset. There are potential pitfalls, however, such as the misrepresentation of DNA ranging across the landscape without human vectors or motivations. Genetic data must be interpreted through the lens of all available data from the site and surrounding region in order to understand how it its into the potential for human migration. These ideas will …

An Exploratory Study Of Food Traditions Associated With Imbolg (St. Brigid’S Day) From The Irish Schools’ Folklore Collection, Caitriona Niphilibin, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

This study explores the food traditions of Imbolg or St. Brigid’s Day (1st February), one of the quarter days of the Irish calendar year, which heralds the awakening of spring. Imbolg is comparable to Christmas eve, in that celebratory potato dishes such as colcannon or ‘poundies’ and boxty are consumed. Throughout the Schools’ Collection (6,000 copybooks filled with folklore collected by over 50,000 children), a rich food history where customs, superstitions, divinations and a mixing of the pagan and Christian traditions is evident. Four main themes: ‘Dishes’, ‘Brigid’s Crosses’, ‘Biddy Boys and Brídeogs’ and ‘Brigid, miracles and religion’ were identified, …

A Kitchen At The Heart Of A School–An Investigation Into School Meals In The Republic Of Ireland, Michelle Darmody

Articles

Free school meals provide support to vulnerable families in the Republic of Ireland. Funding is allocated as part of an anti-poverty strategy. An investigation was carried out to discover if the school meal could be used to provide nutritious scratch-cooked food as well as providing opportunities for increased socialisation and pedagogy. Food affects students in a myriad of ways and schools are in a unique position to guide what and how young people eat. This article draws on data from an ethnographic study in an inner city Dublin school.

Agrochemicals And Rural Women's Health In The Volta Region Of Ghana, Sedomda Kpikpitse

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Steered by the demand to improve and increase farm production, agrochemicals are regularly used by many farmers globally. However, agrochemical usage has contributed to many chronic illnesses experienced by users such as reproductive disorders, different kinds of cancers, and some chronic respiratory diseases. There are several regional and global coalitions to regulate the prevalence of agrochemicals to ensure their safe usage. Even though people can have access to some approved chemicals, the proper handling of these chemicals is not guaranteed. Many qualities of the person handling the chemical could increase or reduce the risk associated with agrochemicals. The behavior of …

Hidup Dalam Transit: Representasi Diri Digital Pengungsi Muda Oromo Di Instagram Terhadap Rekonstruksi "Refugeeness" Dalam Interaksi Antara Pengungsi Dan Audiens, Clarisa Irene

Antropologi Indonesia

The representation of refugees and asylum seekers should not be bounded to media’s depiction of it. This paper focuses on refugees’ self-representation on Instagram, one of the most used social media platforms in the world, which cannot be understood separately from their daily life as refugees. Drawing from the observation of young Oromo refugees, I find that Instagram—and other social media—are used as a form of online participation to fill their days in transit. Other than offering the Oromo youths access to entertainment and new insights, Instagram also provides a space in which they can build and maintain relationship and …

Spectatorial Sisterhood: Relasi Sosial Pengguna Second Account Di Instagram, Amelia Rugun Sirait

Antropologi Indonesia

Instagram is a popular image based social media platform. Usually, users have their own accounts for their personal profile to be viewed publicly. As Instagram features develop, users may have more than one account. Accounts that are specific to certain circle of friends are called “second accounts” and treated as private accounts used to express and relate through images. In this social media ethnography, seven subjects shared their experiences through uploaded images, videos and texts. They have the awareness to avoid relationships and gazes in their main account by building a different subjectivity in their second account. Contents on their …

Youtube Sebagai Arena Produksi Dan Reproduksi Kultur Hip-Hop, Edra Ramadhan Praliansyah

Antropologi Indonesia

This article discusses the so-called YouTube rapper phenomenon, a new subgenre of hip-hop music whose emergence was caused by YouTube. Rap or hip-hop, which has a long history of intergroup resistance from stage to stage, has now moved to YouTube as a new battleground, producing the YouTube rapper subgenre. This article shows that the hip-hop community was very responsive to YouTube, which was their new stage, alongside Discord and Facebook as more textual media employable for debate and discussion. Pivot: Sebuah Tinjauan Weberian Atas Rasionalitas Tindakan, Albertus Bambang Suprijanto, Tony Rudyansjah

Antropologi Indonesia

Second conversion along with the increasing of welfare and age is a common phenomenon that occurs among the urban middle class. In this case, the achievement of the ultimate goal of life must be prepared through daily habits. Religion is then considered as a vehicle that can bring them through life to realize what they aspire to in the future. Religious morality is used as a guide in living daily life. In fact, not all changes in life views can be categorized as second conversions. In this paper, Max Weber's conception of the “calling” is used as an analytical tool …

Compassionate Goddes And Filial Monk: The Influence Of Confucian Values On Chinese Buddhism And Its Practices In Indonesia, Jesada Buaban

Antropologi Indonesia

This article examines interpretations of Buddhism that have been occurred to respond to Confucian values. Textual analysis and ethnography to scrutinize Chinese ritual performances in Indonesia were employed as research method. It found that in order to serve the Confucian values, Buddhism has to emphasize filial piety alongside monastic practices. It can be seen in the stories of Guanyin saved her father and Mulian saved his mother from hell. Although the origin of these stories can be traced to the Pali and Sanskrit scriptures, they had been reinterpreted and localized to convey Confucian values and Chinese tradition. In addition, these …

Akses Dalam Praktik Pemerantaraan Kesenian Di Indonesia, Gita Hastarika Jan 2021

Akses Dalam Praktik Pemerantaraan Kesenian Di Indonesia, Gita Hastarika

Antropologi Indonesia

This article is a response to Jess C. Ribot and Nancy Lee Peluso’s theory of access through my experience working at an art brokerage agency in Indonesia. Ribot and Peluso have examined how social actors make use of resource, property, money, and people who benefit them, but they do not explain in detail how the actual process of an actor gaining an access. In my personal reflection, access turns out to be multi-layered, hierarchical, and always in the hands of other actors, never free-floating. My analysis shows that access cannot be gained for free, but is always a gift. This …

The Fringe Or The Heart Of Things? Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Musics In Australian Music Institutions, Clint Bracknell, Linda Barwick

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Teetering on the fringe of Australian music scholarship and knowledge institutions, research and teaching of local Indigenous musics hold a marginal place, belying the positioning of Indigenous music-makers at the centre of international representations of Australian culture, and the dynamic local connections of Indigenous music-making to Australian landscapes and social realities. Music’s ubiquity and diversity worldwide show its potential as a tool to manage the changing world in societies of the past and present, yet this potential is largely neglected in contemporary Australia, and our theories and evidence base are limited by the narrow western focus within our knowledge institutions. …

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz Jan 2021

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Physically cut off from locations and archives central to our work due to restrictions in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, area studies scholars must reimagine what constitutes rigorous and responsible research in their respective disciplines. The practice of remote research, however, is not a new one. Digital ethnography, an admittedly niche subdiscipline of anthropology, has long been grappling with the issues of how to value and conduct remote research. This essay explores a number of misconceptions regarding digital and remote research that may aid in contextualizing and coming to terms with the anxieties the broader scholarly community faces. I …

Is It Possible To Think Of A “Chinese Pacific” In The Making? Decolonizing Anthropology In The Asia-Pacific Region, Rodolfo Maggio Jan 2021

Is It Possible To Think Of A “Chinese Pacific” In The Making? Decolonizing Anthropology In The Asia-Pacific Region, Rodolfo Maggio

Asia Pacific Perspectives

The travel restrictions implemented to limit the spread of the COVID19 pandemic prevent fieldworkers from collecting ethnographic data in the Pacific. The possibility of collecting first-hand data about indigenous perspectives on the recent growth of the Chinese presence and influence is therefore limited too. Despite the critical need for this kind of data, the situation provides an opportunity for a concerted reflection on the conceptual tools scholars deploy to study China in the Pacific. A decolonial methodology seems necessary to prevent the superimposition of preconceived ideas upon indigenous views that, at the moment, can only be accessed in journalistic and …
