Critical Design Literacy Through Reflection In Design, Ingvill Gjerdrum Maus
Critical Design Literacy Through Reflection In Design, Ingvill Gjerdrum Maus
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper discusses a conceptual review of three frameworks for students’ reflection in general design education. The frameworks were selected for their different focus of attention on the students’ engagement with design products and environmental impacts. The review results indicated that the focus of attention had affected the topics of the questions for reflection; the questions of how related to product design, the questions of why related to environmental impacts and question of what related to plural solutions to challenges in both product design and environments. The paper discuss how researcher, teacher and students have different perspectives on whether these …

Design For Justice Lab: Interdisciplinarity In Times Of Virtual Education, Santiago De Francisco Vela, Laura Guzman-Abello, Santiago Pardo Rodríguez
Learn X Design Conference Series
There is a growing interest in the formation of interdisciplinary competencies focused on issues of access to justice. The Design for Justice Lab is a bet between the Schools of Law, Design, and Engineering of Universidad de los Andes to promote challenge-based learning by articulating knowledge among multiple disciplines. The Lab has had five cohorts, of which two have been in classroom mode, and three have been in virtual mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following document presents the opportunities and challenges of developing interdisciplinary courses with courts, judges, and administrative organizations to improve access to justice in Colombia. …

Collaboration Practices In Industrial Design Education: The Case Of Metu From A Historical Perspective, 1981-2021, Naz A G Z Börekçi, Gülay Hasdoğan, Fatma Korkut
Learn X Design Conference Series
METU Industrial Design Department, as one of the leading educational institutions in Turkey, has more than 20 years of experience in collaboration projects with external partners. Collaboration with external partners has been a well-established instrument in design studio pedagogy at the undergraduate level in particular. Whether and in which ways the collaboration schemes, the collaborators, their goals and roles have evolved in time received relatively little attention in literature. This paper reviews the collaboration practices of the Department from a historical perspective with cross-references to the local context, identifying the internal and external factors that shaped the design education and …
Encountering Development In Social Design Education, Lesley-Ann Noel
Encountering Development In Social Design Education, Lesley-Ann Noel
Learn X Design Conference Series
Design for social good is an area of design in which designers focus on social problems. One way of teaching this type of content is through classes with an international component that mimics an international development project, where students work as a consulting team for an organization in a developing country. However, this type of class sometimes replicates problematic structures in international development such as neocolonialism, the perception that knowledge comes from the Global North. This paper details a workshop that was created to disrupt the negative narratives in this kind of global social design project, such as the design …

Inclusive Education Driven By Design: The Case Of A Graduate Seminar Course, Úrsula Bravo, Maritza Rivera
Learn X Design Conference Series
This case study explores the use of design tools by educators with an aim to answer the question: How can a design-based approach contribute to the development of strategies for inclusive education? Thirty-five educators, who were students from the final year of a master’s degree focusing on inclusive education taught at a Chilean university, participated in the study. The information collected included participant observation and the analysis of the work elaborated by the educators throughout the seminar. Subsequently, we selected the trajectories of three participants, which were analysed by open coding. The results suggest that adopting a design-based focus helped …
The Art Of Breaking Up: Ending Romantic Relationships, Emma Salzwedel
The Art Of Breaking Up: Ending Romantic Relationships, Emma Salzwedel
Honors Thesis
This thesis reviews research on the most difficult aspect of dating: the breakup. The process of ending a romantic relationship follows a particular pattern which begins when problems begin to arise in the partnership and ends when both individuals have accepted the breakup and received closure. Using various peer-reviewed studies, the literature review deliberates the common predictors of a breakup, common methods of breaking up (and how each is perceived by the other person), common reactions to the breakup based on gender, and finally, the aftermath of the breakup. It is determined that personal and individual relationship factors ultimately decide …
Tuberculosis Screening And Education In The Urban Public School District, Nikolaos S. Moraros
Tuberculosis Screening And Education In The Urban Public School District, Nikolaos S. Moraros
Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's deadliest curable communicable infectious disease. The eradication of TB is a significantly important intractable global public health challenge for health agencies at all levels. Global migration, cultural-socioeconomic factors and increase of multidrug-resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB) affect the epidemiology of TB in the United States and other countries worldwide. Studies have shown that increase in TB knowledge and understanding contributes to early TB screenings/diagnosis, interventions and treatments, result in reducing MDR-TB, rates of TB transmissions, relapse, morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this project is: (1) to develop a TB screening risk assessment protocol for the Urban …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Madagascar experienced a major faunal turnover near the end of the first millenium CE that particularly affected terrestrial, large-bodied vertebrate species. Teasing apart the relative impacts of people and climate on this event requires a focus on regional records with good chronological control. These records may document coeval changes in rainfall, faunal composition, and human activities. Here we present new paleontological and paleoclimatological data from southwestern Madagascar, the driest part of the island today. We collected over 1500 subfossil bones from deposits at a coastal site called Antsirafaly and from both flooded and dry cave deposits at Tsimanampesotse National Park. …

Identifying Current Gaps In Church Planting Movements Research: Integrating First- And Second-Order Perspectives, Warrick Farah
Great Commission Research Journal
The proliferation of church planting movements in least-reached peoples today provides an opportunity ripe for missiological research. Using the online application form for the Movements Research Symposium 2020 of the Motus Dei Network, this article identifies six gaps of understanding in the missiological discourse on movements: 1) Deepening Theological and Missiological Descriptions of Movements, 2) Identifying Best Practices and Effective Movement Strategies, 3) Clarifying Issues of Ecclesiology – Practical, Theological, and Spiritual, 4) Training Movement Catalysts and Practitioners, 5) Highlighting Contextual, Sociological, and Holistic Features of Movements, and 6) Documenting Movements with Respect to Verification, Metrics, and Administration. However, issues …

What Counts As Data?, Anya Bernstein
What Counts As Data?, Anya Bernstein
Brooklyn Law Review
We live in an age of information. But whether information counts as data depends on the questions we put to it. The same bit of information can constitute important data for some questions, but be irrelevant to others. And even when relevant, the same bit of data can speak to one aspect of our question while having little to say about another. Knowing what counts as data, and what it is data of, makes or breaks a data-driven approach. Yet that need for clarity sometimes gets ignored or assumed away. In this essay, I examine what counts as data in …
Futurizing Gastronomic Experiences In Natural Environments, Francesc Fusté-Forné
Futurizing Gastronomic Experiences In Natural Environments, Francesc Fusté-Forné
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
The current pandemic accentuated the need for a more responsible tourism system, where local food production and consumption become a cornerstone of sustainable tourism futures. Experiences embedded in natural environments are neither new nor recent, but the pandemic urged tourism stakeholders to look at nature again as a source of inspiration for tourism regeneration. The research analyses the configuration of gastronomic experiences in protected areas through the philosophy of a gourmet restaurant located in a volcanic setting in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain.
Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
General Motors’ Futurama exhibit at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair offered a wildly popular immersive experience of American automobility twenty years in the future. The Fair proclaimed the “Dawn of a New Day” in “The World of Tomorrow” through comprehensive innovative architecture and design, which promoted the primary role of new technology, especially in the field of transportation. Futurama harnessed techniques of theatre and multi-media in unprecedented ways. Its narrow aim was to foster the construction of new highway systems hospitable to the growing population of modern cars. More broadly, Futurama sought to inculcate a new way of thinking …
Multi-Agent Scavenging Patterns In Hawai‘I: A Forensic Archaeological And Skeletal Case Study, Jennifer F. Byrnes, William Belcher
Multi-Agent Scavenging Patterns In Hawai‘I: A Forensic Archaeological And Skeletal Case Study, Jennifer F. Byrnes, William Belcher
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Knowledge of the behavior of local fauna can aid forensic investigators in developing awareness of site formation processes. In Hawai‘i, little has been published on the effects of feral domestic pig (Sus scrofa) and feral domestic dog (Canis familiaris) scavenging and bone dispersal on field recovery and laboratory observations. In this Pacific tropical setting, the most consequential terrestrial taphonomic agents are pigs and dogs, both in terms of hard tissue modification and dispersal of remains across the landscape. In 2017, an archaeologist discovered the remains of an unidentified decedent on the island of Kauaʻi, State of Hawai‘i during a cultural …

Where They Sing Solo: Accounting For Cross-Cultural Variation In Collective Music-Making In Theories Of Music Evolution, Aniruddh D. Patel, Christopher Von Rueden
Where They Sing Solo: Accounting For Cross-Cultural Variation In Collective Music-Making In Theories Of Music Evolution, Aniruddh D. Patel, Christopher Von Rueden
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Collective, synchronous music-making is far from ubiquitous across traditional, small-scale societies. We describe societies that lack collective music and offer hypotheses to help explain this cultural variation. Without identifying the factors that explain variation in collective music-making across these societies, theories of music evolution based on social bonding (Savage et al.) or coalition signaling (Mehr et al.) remain incomplete.

University Students' Perceptions Of Writing Assessment, Hanan Alaa Hegazi
University Students' Perceptions Of Writing Assessment, Hanan Alaa Hegazi
Theses and Dissertations
Instructors and students are the pillars of higher education. There is substantial interest in teachers’ beliefs, preferences, and perceptions in language assessment research, with an emphasis on writing assessment. Additionally, there is a growing body of research investigating students’ perceptions of assessment. However, research that examines how students perceive writing assessment is limited. Therefore, this study investigates two aspects: (a) students’ perceptions of their writing ability and (b) their perceptions of writing assessment in an English-medium private university in Cairo. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach for data collection, which involved distributing student questionnaires, conducting semi-structured interviews, and collecting writing …
Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel
Representing Africa In The ‘Coming To America’ Films, Samuel K. Bonsu, Delphine Godefroit-Winkel
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Through an interpretive analysis of the two Eddie Murphy films "Coming to America" (CTA) and "Coming 2 America", spaced nearly 30 years apart, this review essay underscores the persistence of Orientalist Othering of Africa. The negative images of Africa that are so engrained in people have been facilitated in significant part by a strategic, but perhaps unconscious, effort to socialize audiences into an identity construction process that casts Africans as inferior. Despite attempts at favorable depictions of Africa, these processes continue to play out.
