The Reel Deal: The Stacked Benefits Of A Reel Mower, John K. Hix, Simone Bailey Aug 2021

The Reel Deal: The Stacked Benefits Of A Reel Mower, John K. Hix, Simone Bailey

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

"Mow-lawning" is a colloquial term referred to actively cutting grass using a reel mower, typically at a faster than normal pace in order to maximize exercise benefit and minimize time, with the emphasis on the physical action of mowing and only secondarily on the resulting lawn care. While mow-lawning remains relatively uncommon in the United States, adoption of this practice by those healthy enough to engage in the level of exercise required can deliver a number of benefits that improve environmental, safety, and personal goals simultaneously. The stacking of so many benefits in one practice deserves more attention and promotion.

Preparation Of Xylooligosaccharides From Sesame Meal With Prebiotic Properties, Mohammad Altamimi, Snigdha Guha, Robart Rastall

Hebron University Research Journal-A (Natural Sciences) - (مجلة جامعة الخليل للبحوث- أ (العلوم الطبيعيه

Defatted sesame meals were extracted for ethanol soluble sugars and the effects of different conditions for extraction were compared for the composition and yield of the extracts. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) were generated from the hemicellulose fraction (following deproteinization) using endo-xylanase from Bacillus subtilis. The condition which produced the highest yield for total soluble sugars was 40% ethanol at 60 º C for 30 minutes for de-hulled (A) and hulled (B) sesame meal samples. Ultrasonication treatment of the samples had no significant benefit over water-bath. Sugar composition analysis of the samples showed the presence of glucose, arabinose, galactose and xylose with trace …

Hebron University Research Journal-A (Natural Sciences) - (مجلة جامعة الخليل للبحوث- أ (العلوم الطبيعيه

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus that may cause illness in animals or humans. SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in late December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The coronavirus infected patients ‘who suffering from Immundeficient or chronic inflammation are at higher risk of getting a severe infection from COVID-19. The symptoms such as proinflammatory and hypercoagulable, non-cardiac pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and ARDS resulting in sudden death have been seen in those patients. Supportive treatment is still the main strategy in treating this disease since there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the infection resulting from …

Hebron University Research Journal-A (Natural Sciences) - (مجلة جامعة الخليل للبحوث- أ (العلوم الطبيعيه

This review characterizes, identifies and presents remarks of breeding rootstocks in Palestine. It’s based upon a survey of the rootstocks that have been used along decades of breeding and grafting of local and introduced cultivars. All for acclimatization for hard conditions that confront fruit trees. It also proposes some expected promising rootstocks that might suit the climate change and whatever affected by it of biotic and abiotic stresses in the area. Obviously, this review discusses the advantages of the current confirmed rootstocks that are compatible with most of the species of the popular trees. It also pointed out to inadequate …

A Teacher's Companion For The Emerging Electric Orchestra, Rachael Greenman Aug 2021

A Teacher's Companion For The Emerging Electric Orchestra, Rachael Greenman

Recital Papers

Historically orchestral string instruments have been defined as classical instruments. As a result in primary and secondary school programs students have been relegated to playing music by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Those programs and that world is rapidly evolving. A broad range of new electric string instruments and technologies are being introduced into the classroom and everything from pop to rock to show tunes are being played engaging students in new and exciting ways. The challenge for teachers and administrators is how to start such a program in their school. This thesis explores the unique challenges and opportunities that this …

A Novel Treatment Strategy For Lapatinib Resistance In A Subset Of Her2-Amplified Gastric Cancer., Gang Ning, Qihui Zhu, Wonyoung Kang, Hamin Lee, Leigh Maher, Yun-Suhk Suh, Michael Michaud, Mayerlin Silva, Jee Young Kwon, Chengsheng Zhang, Charles Lee

Faculty Research 2021

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) amplification occurs in approximately 13-23% of all GC cases and patients with HER2 overexpression exhibit a poor prognosis. Lapatinib, a dual EGFR/HER2 tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is an effective agent to treat HER2-amplified breast cancer but it failed in gastric cancer (GC) clinical trials. However, the molecular mechanism of lapatinib resistance in HER2-amplified GC is not well studied.

METHODS: We employed an unbiased, genome-scale screening with pooled CRISPR library on HER2-amplified GC cell lines to identify genes that are associated …

The Environmentalist Movement In The World And Environmental Studies In The Marketing Literature, Bilge Nur Öztürk

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

Problems such as environmental pollution, the depletion of the ozone layer, the melting of glaciers due to global warming, the decline in clean resources and the extinction of some species have prompted people to consider the idea of a more sustainable world. In this process, humanity is going through a mental transformation and gaining some awareness. As emphasized in this study, all crises (accidents, fi res, outbreaks, etc.) experienced worldwide have been the driving forces for environmental transformations. Environmentalist movements emerging from this orientation have also found their place in the world of science and therefore in the marketing literature. …

Prospects In Connecting Genetic Variation To Variation In Fertility In Male Bees, Garett P. Slater, Nicholas M A Smith, Brock A. Harpur Aug 2021

Prospects In Connecting Genetic Variation To Variation In Fertility In Male Bees, Garett P. Slater, Nicholas M A Smith, Brock A. Harpur

Department of Entomology Faculty Publications

Bees are economically and ecologically important pollinating species. Managed and native bee species face increasing pressures from human-created stressors such as habitat loss, pesticide use, and introduced pathogens. There has been increasing attention towards how each of these factors impacts fertility, especially sperm production and maintenance in males. Here, we turn our attention towards another important factor impacting phenotypic variation: genetics. Using honey bees as a model, we explore the current understanding of how genetic variation within and between populations contributes to variation in sperm production, sperm maintenance, and insemination success among males. We conclude with perspectives and future directions …

Use Of Its‑1 To Identify Bactrocera Dorsalis And Bactrocera Occipitalis (Diptera: Tephritidae): A Case Study Using Flies Trapped In California From 2008 To 2018, Norman B. Barr, Martin Hauser, Jennifer Belcher, David Salinas, Erin Schuenzel, Peter Kerr, Stephen Gaimari

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Molecular methods are necessary to diagnose immature life stages of the agricultural pest fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and are useful to corroborate identifications based on adults because morphological variation within the species can overlap with congeners. DNA sequencing of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS‑1) has been adopted by the International Plant Protection Convention as an internationally accepted method to distinguish between the 2 pestiferous fruit fly species Bactrocera dorsalis and Bactrocera carambolae (Drew & Hancock). Reported ITS‑1 sequences also are distinct and diagnostically informative to distinguish several other Bactrocera species related to B. dorsalis. In this …

Rethinking Scale – Relationality, Place, And Critical Zone, Ole Jensen Aug 2021

Rethinking Scale – Relationality, Place, And Critical Zone, Ole Jensen

Nordes Conference Series

Scale is an important concept. It works in geography, architecture, urbanism and a number of other areas. It also works in the ‘real world’ of humans where it organizes societies and fuel politics. Scale gather people in collectives, as well as it works a political force for pitting them against one another. Hence scale is far from neutral. In this paper, we want to critically challenge an understanding of scale as something fixed, structural, obdurate, and ordered. Rather we encourage a thinking of scale as something related to fluidity, mobility, networks, and continuums. Rethinking scale along these lines is important …

Critical Proximities, Henrik Oxvig Aug 2021

Critical Proximities, Henrik Oxvig

Nordes Conference Series

In the field of architecture work with scale has traditionally been used to suppress the importance of size. Axes have been planned with a birds eye view such as is given by a plan on a drawing board. Today this ‘god trick’ is challenged by the awareness that we must work from within the material world, not upon it. We must create situated knowledge – and situated architecture – in what is called The Critical Zone and which we can only experience, understand and work with embedded, immanently. This article presents and elaborates on the challenges outlined to suggest how …

From “Bugs” To Exploratory Exhibition Design – Transforming Design Flaws In Users’ Experiences, Kristina Maria Madsen, Peter Vistisen Aug 2021

From “Bugs” To Exploratory Exhibition Design – Transforming Design Flaws In Users’ Experiences, Kristina Maria Madsen, Peter Vistisen

Nordes Conference Series

In this paper we explore the potentials in observing how users creatively explore or hack an exhibition design and transform or scale these “abnormalities” in the users microinteractions into new explorative exhibition designs. Can we apply this notion of observing exploring user interactions and transform these microinteraction into drivers for user experience based on strategies of emergent gameplay? If we acknowledge these findings from the design process as potential enablers of superior user experiences for the end-user, and not simply as ‘bugs’ and ‘anomalies’ to be avoided or ‘patched’, there is a potential for scaling, transferring, and transforming new insights …

The Design Fiction Matrix— A Synthesis Tool For Grounding Fiction Scenarios In Real Facts, Peter Vistisen Aug 2021

The Design Fiction Matrix— A Synthesis Tool For Grounding Fiction Scenarios In Real Facts, Peter Vistisen

Nordes Conference Series

This explorative paper presents a didactic synthesis tool to support designers and design students in adopting design fiction as a method for speculative design. We present the theoretical underpinnings behind the development of the framework and the logic of the tool itself while situating the tool among the current discourse on design fiction. Finally, we present a series of reflections upon the recent year’s application of the tool in a design educational setting, showing the different ways the tool can be applied and represented in practice.

Scaling Bodily Fluids For Utopian Fabulations, Karey Helms, Marie Louise Juul Søndergaard, Nadia Campo Woytuk Aug 2021

Scaling Bodily Fluids For Utopian Fabulations, Karey Helms, Marie Louise Juul Søndergaard, Nadia Campo Woytuk

Nordes Conference Series

This paper explores human bodily fluids for morethan- human collaborative survival. We present four utopian fabulations in which urine, menstrual blood, and human milk are designed with beyond the scale of a singular human body. Each fabulation illustrates queer scales and uses of bodily fluids through extended or improper uses as pathways towards caring multi-species relations within a damaged environment. From these narratives, we reflect on imagining generous collaborations for an openness towards unknowable possibilities and crafting different measures through the tensions of coinciding scales.

This paper focuses on matters of scales in the project Landscape in Motion, which involves creative research in the fields of landscape design and performing/digital arts. Landscape in Motion acts as an interdisciplinary inquiry into the relationship between urban infrastructures and the human scale, and it aims to define an innovative site-sensitive methodology for both urban design processes and site-based arts. Within the project, movement and dance act as a focal point to evaluate and highlight the social/environmental value of urban infrastructures. Integral to the project is the defining of an interdisciplinary lexicon as well as the development of a …

Scaling Experiments In Urban Space – An Exploratory Framework, Eva Knutz, Kathrina Dankl Aug 2021

Scaling Experiments In Urban Space – An Exploratory Framework, Eva Knutz, Kathrina Dankl

Nordes Conference Series

In this article, we outline an exploratory framework that attempts to capture different types of scaling practices in urban space. "Scaling" in this context is understood as a concept that involves a temporary intervention in public space that negotiates agency among human and nonhuman actors. The aim of this framework is to assist curators and researchers in conceptualizing site-specific interventions or exhibitions in urban contexts.
