Every Part Of Yeast Is The Best Part, Matthieu Baulez, Bruno Bertaud, Lisa Saibi

Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference

Yeasts are single-cell, eukaryotic microorganisms classified in the fungi kingdom. They are generally around 10μm in size, have a nuclear membrane, a cell wall, and a cytoplasmic content. Yeasts are characterized as heterotrophs, which means they rely on organic material as sources of energy and nutrients. Not all yeasts are equal. There are about 60 genera and about 1,500 species of yeasts. Only a few are used commercially. Thanks to its exceptional fermentative capacities and nutritional properties, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the main yeast used in food, beverage and baking as well as in animal nutrition. The main types of yeasts …

Effective measurement of seasonal variations in the timing and amount of production is critical to managing spatially heterogeneous agroecosystems in a changing climate. Although numerous technologies for such measurements are available, their relationships to one another at a continental extent are unknown. Using data collected from across the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network and other networks, we investigated correlations among key metrics representing primary production, phenology, and carbon fluxes in croplands, grazing lands, and crop-grazing integrated systems across the continental U.S. Metrics we examined included gross primary productivity (GPP) estimated from eddy covariance (EC) towers and modelled from the Landsat …

When ‘Inside-Out’ Goes ‘Upside-Down’: Teaching Students In A Jail Environment During The Covid Pandemic And Implications For The Use Of Correctional Technology Post-Pandemic, Kimberly Collica-Cox

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

The transient population of county jails pose unique challenges for program implementation and maintenance. This past year, the spread of COVID-19 substantially increased such challenges, particularly since most correctional institutions are opposed to using Internet-based technologies, such as Zoom, in the secure part of their institution. Although college programming is rare in most jails, Inside-Out type classes, which allow college students to take a credited course alongside the incarcerated in a correctional setting, is a great way to provide a missed opportunity for purposeful intervention for the incarcerated, while providing a unique experiential learning opportunity for traditional undergraduate students. Based …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced COVID-19 has emerged as a defining global health crisis in current times. Data from the World Health Organization shows demographic variations in COVID-19 severity and lethality. Diet may play a significant role in providing beneficial host cell factors contributing to immunity against deadly SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis. Spices are essential components of the diet that possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. Hyperinflammation, an aberrant systemic inflammation associated with pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, and multiorgan dysfunction, is a major clinical outcome in COVID-19. Knowing the beneficial properties of spices, we hypothesize that spice-derived bioactive components …

Crossing The Threshold: An Analysis Of The Hero's Journey, Megan C. Hulings

Theses - ALL

The Hero's Journey is well-known amongst storytellers the world over as a useful structure to create compelling characters and engaging plots, though many see its use as derivative and uninspired. After its explosion in popularity in the 1970s, audiences have come to expect stories to hit every step of the Hero's Journey beat-for-beat.

This thesis will explore the history of the Hero's Journey, from its conception to its modern interpretation. It will examine the individual parts that can elevate this simple structure into a complex narrative. By navigating the works of both Christopher Vogler and John Yorke, this thesis will …

Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Young Adults Following Covid-19, Andrew Heckel Aug 2021

Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Young Adults Following Covid-19, Andrew Heckel

Theses - ALL

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, may cause a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response that could lead to cardiovascular damage and cause individuals recovering from COVID-19 to be at an increased risk for future cardiovascular disease (CVD). Physical activity (PA) is inversely associated with systemic inflammation and CVD risk, which may make it a useful cardioprotective lifestyle factor for individuals recovering from COVID-19. Purpose: 1) Compare arterial stiffness and systemic inflammatory levels between individuals recovering from COVID-19 and uninfected controls, 2) explore systemic inflammation as a predictor of arterial stiffness, and 3) explore PA as a mediator for the relationship …

This report is a synthetic survey of published accounts of 43 reef-associated fish species and their parasites from the east coast of North America, the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and regions adjacent to the south Florida reef tract. To date, no comprehensive host-parasite list is available for this region, although comparable reviews from other regions have played a vital role in the fields of parasitology and fish ecology, providing valuable guidance on sampling locations, available host fishes inhabiting the region, and inventories of parasites likely to be found infecting these host species. This systematic review of teleost host fish …

The Influence Of Trailing Edge Shape And Kinematics On Bio-Inspired Pitching Panels, Justin Thomas King Aug 2021

The Influence Of Trailing Edge Shape And Kinematics On Bio-Inspired Pitching Panels, Justin Thomas King

Dissertations - ALL

Recently, some engineers have turned to the study of swimming and flying animals to provide insight into the design of vehicles that move through air or water. For certain animals swimming in water, thrust is generated primarily by either a caudal fin or fluke located at the posterior end of the swimmer. It has been argued extensively in the existing research literature that biological propulsors of high aspect ration that also display forked, or lunate, planforms are representative of optimized propulsor geometries with respect to propulsive performance. However, recent experimental and computational work on purely pitching panels has demonstrated that …

Interplay Of Geometry And Mechanics: Disordered Spring Networks And Shape-Changing Cerebella, Mahesh Chandrasekhar Gandikota Aug 2021

Interplay Of Geometry And Mechanics: Disordered Spring Networks And Shape-Changing Cerebella, Mahesh Chandrasekhar Gandikota

Dissertations - ALL

This thesis reports work in three topics - I) isotropic strain-induced rigidity transitions in under-constrained spring networks II) uniaxial strain-induced stiffening transitions in semiflexible networks with area-conserving inclusions and III) non-linearities in the buckling without bending morphogenesis model for growing cerebella. All models are two dimensional and we employ either discrete and continuum models to study these systems. In I), motivated by the rigidity transitions in isotropically strained disordered spring networks, we study rigidity transitions in isotropically strained area-conserving random polygonal loops. We find a crossover transition in these loops. We also provide arguments towards showing convexity as a necessary condition …

"This Ain't Dances With Salmon": Native American Tropes In Dime Novels And Western Film Referencing Dances With Wolves, Jennifer K. Melton

Communication Theses

Too many White Savior films are causing a loss in translation from Brown and Black people to tell their stories. Hollywood was built on systemic racism, much like the United States; however, beginning in the early 1900s was when Hollywood became a prominent film industry, it allowed Jay Silverheels and Stepin Fetchit to portray their race of character. Before Hollywood there were dime novels and Western shows, which at times did not portray these races in favorable light. Hollywood, dime novels, and Western shows from the era of Buffalo Bill are the reasons why there is White saviorism, even in …

The Relationship Between Diet Quality, Micronutrient Content And Sleep Indices In Children Ages 9-11, Nicholas Joseph Marino

Theses - ALL

Physiological factors such as metabolism, circadian rhythms, and hormone production play an important role in sleep quality. The physiology of sleep is significantly modified by externally mediated factors, such as socioeconomic status and the quality of nutrition. Sleep actigraphy records from a sub-sample of school-age participants in the Syracuse Lead Study (n=125) were used to evaluate the impact of diet on sleep quality and efficiency. Sleep duration, efficiency, latency, and fragmentation were extracted from actigraphy records over 5 consecutive weekdays. Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) scores and component sub-scores were calculated from two 24-hour recalls per participant collected through the …

Multiple Autonomous Cell Death Suppression Strategies Ensure Cytomegalovirus Fitness, Pratyusha Mandal, Lynsey Nagrani, Liliana Hernandez, Anita Louise Mccormick, Christopher Dillon, Heather Koehler, Linda Roback, Emad S Alnemri, Douglas Green, Edward Mocarski

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Programmed cell death pathways eliminate infected cells and regulate infection-associated inflammation during pathogen invasion. Cytomegaloviruses encode several distinct suppressors that block intrinsic apoptosis, extrinsic apoptosis, and necroptosis, pathways that impact pathogenesis of this ubiquitous herpesvirus. Here, we expanded the understanding of three cell autonomous suppression mechanisms on which murine cytomegalovirus relies: (i) M38.5-encoded viral mitochon-drial inhibitor of apoptosis (vMIA), a BAX suppressor that functions in concert with M41.1-encoded viral inhibitor of BAK oligomerization (vIBO), (ii) M36-encoded viral inhibitor of caspase-8 activation (vICA), and (iii) M45-encoded viral inhibitor of RIP/RHIM activation (vIRA). Following infection of bone marrow-derived macrophages, the virus initially …

Background: Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. There is increasing evidence showing that depression is associated with the pathophysiology in amygdala; however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood.

Method: We established a rat model of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and conducted a series of behavior tests to observe behavioral changes. Then liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomics were employed to detect metabolomes and proteomes in the amygdala, respectively. Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) and other bioinformatic analyses were used to analyze differentially expressed metabolites and proteins.

Results: The …

Vitamin D Modulates Rett Syndrome Phenotypes And Underlying Cellular Pathways In An Mecp2-Mutant Mouse Model, Mayara De Cassia Ribeiro

Dissertations - ALL

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a progressive and severe X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the transcriptional regulator MECP2. There is currently no effective treatment for RTT. Female RTT patients develop relatively normally during the first 6-18 months of life, after which they undergo a period of rapid regression, losing the ability to talk, walk and purposefully use their hands, in addition to suffering from deceleration of head growth, and onset of repetitive, autistic behaviors. RTT symptoms can be partially reversed by the re-expression of Mecp2 in adult mice, suggesting the potential for post-symptomatic therapeutic intervention. Among the many dysfunctions …
