Jewish Mobile's Narrow Bridge, Deborah Gurt Oct 2021

Jewish Mobile's Narrow Bridge, Deborah Gurt

University Faculty and Staff Publications

Mobile, Alabama, is home to a Jewish community formally established in 1841 when members purchased land for a burial ground. Approximately 1,000 in number, today’s Jewish residents are deeply entwined with the fabric of the city—in business, education, medicine, and civic life. Among them are Holocaust survivors and their descendants, families who have lived here for generations, Jews of color, transplants from the North, LGBTQ Jews, and converts to Judaism, unified primarily by their experiences as members of a religious and cultural minority in Alabama.

With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic felt around the globe, consumers look forward to once again being able to engage in communal experiences where relationships with other customers and with service providers are integral parts of ongoing service experiences. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework for service establishments to better understand the communal approach to becoming a service co-creator, helping service providers create more meaningful relationships between their customers when customers are engaging in the service experience in a group and as an individual. We distinguish individual versus group influences that emerge as a result …

Effects Of Exogenous Application Of Plant Growth Regulators (Snp And Ga3) On Phytoextraction By Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.) Grown In Lead (Pb) Contaminated Soil, Adrianne Beavers, Marina Koether, Thomas C. Mcelroy, Sigurdur Greipsson Oct 2021

Effects Of Exogenous Application Of Plant Growth Regulators (Snp And Ga3) On Phytoextraction By Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.) Grown In Lead (Pb) Contaminated Soil, Adrianne Beavers, Marina Koether, Thomas C. Mcelroy, Sigurdur Greipsson

Faculty Articles

Soil lead (Pb) contamination is a major environmental and public health risk. Switch-grass (Panicum virgatum), a second-generation biofuel crop, is potentially useful for the long-term phytoremediation and phytoextraction of Pb contaminated soils. We evaluated the efficacy of a coor-dinated foliar application of plant growth regulators and soil fungicide and a chelator in order to optimize phytoextraction. Plants were grown in soil culture under controlled conditions. First, three exogenous nitric oxide (NO) donors were evaluated at multiple concentrations: (1) S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP); (2) sodium nitroprusside (SNP); and (3) S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). Second, the effect of SNP (0.5 µM) was examined further with the …

Development Of A Converging-Channel Drop Tower For Sphere Symmetric Isolated Single Droplet Combustion, Nicholas Alexander Demaio Oct 2021

Development Of A Converging-Channel Drop Tower For Sphere Symmetric Isolated Single Droplet Combustion, Nicholas Alexander Demaio

Theses and Dissertations

The dawn of a new Space Age is upon us; Microgravity combustion of hydrocarbon fuels is a popular method of research and characterization. This allows for a one-dimensional analysis by suppressing the buoyancy forces produced by gravity and the large temperature differential between the flame boundary and the surrounding air. The current testing methods are expensive and require extensive preparation on the researchers behalf. There is a need to investigate an alternative method that is inexpensive, repeatable, and comparable to the other approaches that coincides with the literature.

A low-cost converging-channel drop tower was designed and fabricated for sphero-symmetric single …

Sex Differences And Neuroimmune Effects Of Microglial Response In The Mesolimbic Reward Pathway In Nicotine Substance Use Disorder, Erin Leigh Anderson Oct 2021

Sex Differences And Neuroimmune Effects Of Microglial Response In The Mesolimbic Reward Pathway In Nicotine Substance Use Disorder, Erin Leigh Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Smoking remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with less than 5% of smokers attempting to quit succeeding. This is due to the unpleasant withdrawal symptomology, which includes affective symptoms, such as irritability, weight gain, anxiety, and severe craving among others, as well as the cognitive effects, such as difficulty concentrating. This low smoking cessation success rate is also thought to be due to the long-lasting sensitization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) leading to long-term neuroadaptations in the brain’s reward system and alterations in synaptic plasticity that occur following chronic nicotine exposure and withdrawal. Glial …

This assignment tracks with our reading of that text, and asks student teams to select a topic, facilitate classroom discussions of a chapter related to their topic, and then use research …

Bayesian Calibration Of The Icrp Zirconium Biokinetic Model And Use Of Canned Priors For The Evaluation Of Bioassay, Thomas Raymond Labone Oct 2021

Bayesian Calibration Of The Icrp Zirconium Biokinetic Model And Use Of Canned Priors For The Evaluation Of Bioassay, Thomas Raymond Labone

Theses and Dissertations

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) publishes biokinetic models that relate measurements of radioactive material in the body and excreta (bioassay) to the amount of the material taken into the body (intake). Given the intake and the biokinetic model, radiation dose to organs and tissues can be calculated. The ICRP approximates the biokinetics of radioactive materials in the body with compartmental models expressed mathematically as a system of ordinary differential equations, for which they provide point estimates of the rate constants. Inaccurate estimates of intake and radiation dose can result in cases where the biokinetics of an individual differ …

Optimization And Application Of Electrochemical Probes For Neurotransmitter Detection, Colby E. Witt Oct 2021

Optimization And Application Of Electrochemical Probes For Neurotransmitter Detection, Colby E. Witt

Theses and Dissertations

The brain is a complex matrix that is difficult to study. Signaling molecules, neurotransmitters, are constantly being released and sequestered back into neurons within milliseconds to facilitate communication and normal function, a process called neurotransmission. There are few analytical techniques available to selectively probe such a dynamic system, and even fewer can detect these discrete changes in real-time. In order to make robust measurements in the brain you need speed, sensitivity, selectivity and small probe size, which are encompassed by fast-voltammetry with microelectrodes. Traditional fast-voltammetry at carbon fiber microelectrodes (fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV)) requires background subtraction to overcome the large …

How To Effectively Reach Farmers And Assist Them In Reaching Their Precision Management Goals, Courtney Nelson Oct 2021

How To Effectively Reach Farmers And Assist Them In Reaching Their Precision Management Goals, Courtney Nelson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Precision and digital agriculture have been popular buzz words floating around the last several years. These broad terms cover a plethora of topics including GPS ear tags for livestock, soil moisture probes, and aerial imagery. With such a wide number of technological advances at their fingertips, it can be overwhelming for farmers to know where to start.

A study conducted by Purdue University in 2019 took a deeper look at data and software usage across 800 farms larger than 1000 acres (DeLay et al, 2020). Their research revealed that over half of farmers who don’t use farm data or software …

Addressing The Harms Of Pornography, Gillian Allison Oct 2021

Addressing The Harms Of Pornography, Gillian Allison

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Within this paper I look at the existing philosophical work on pornography, from scholars like Catherine MacKinnon, Ronald Dworkin, and Rae Langton to show the current state of the pornography debate that I intend to enter by presenting my own argument about the morality of pornography. I argue that while pornography is harmful, these harms are best resolved through increased sexual education and the popularization and production of more inclusive pornography. The harms pornography causes are so great because pornography is where a lot of people learn about sex. Pornography was never designed to depict an average sexual experience. If …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: The role of an adverse maternal environment (AME) in conjunction with a postweaning Western diet (WD) in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adult offspring has not been explored. Likewise, the molecular mechanisms associated with AME-induced NAFLD have not been studied. The fatty acid translocase or cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) has been implicated to play a causal role in the pathogenesis of WD-induced steatosis. However, it is unknown if CD36 plays a role in AME-induced NAFLD.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the isolated and additive impact of AME and postweaning WD on the …

Disrespect As The Essence Of Constitutional Right Violations, R. George Wright Oct 2021

Disrespect As The Essence Of Constitutional Right Violations, R. George Wright

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article posits that disrespect is a fundamental concept in understanding constitutional rights violations. It argues that the underlying logic and limits of constitutional rights are rooted in considerations of respect and disrespect, particularly respect for persons. The author contends that both intentional and unintentional disrespect can lead to constitutional violations, affecting various rights such as equal protection, free speech, and due process. The analysis draws on philosophical frameworks, including those of Kant and Rawls, to emphasize the centrality of respect in constitutional jurisprudence.

The Roberts Court Its First Amendment Free Expression Jurisprudence: 2005-2021, David L. Hudson Jr. Oct 2021

The Roberts Court Its First Amendment Free Expression Jurisprudence: 2005-2021, David L. Hudson Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article, Fundamental First Amendment Principles, distills the complexity of First Amendment jurisprudence into ten core principles designed to guide students, lawyers, and scholars through what is often described as a labyrinthine body of law. Recognizing that free-speech doctrine lacks a single unifying framework, the authors identify foundational commitments that structure constitutional analysis, including the protection of criticism of government, the strong prohibition against viewpoint discrimination, the safeguarding of symbolic and offensive expression, and the recognition that not all speech is protected. The Article also emphasizes doctrines protecting the right not to speak, freedom of association, and the contextual …

How Birds During Migration Maintain (Oxidative) Balance, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Wales A. Carter, Clara Cooper-Mullin, Kristen J. Demoranville, Abigail E. Frawley, Barbara J. Pierce, Megan Skrip Oct 2021

How Birds During Migration Maintain (Oxidative) Balance, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Wales A. Carter, Clara Cooper-Mullin, Kristen J. Demoranville, Abigail E. Frawley, Barbara J. Pierce, Megan Skrip

Biology Faculty Publications

Animals dynamically adjust their physiology and behavior to survive in changing environments, and seasonal migration is one life stage that demonstrates these dynamic adjustments. As birds migrate between breeding and wintering areas, they incur physiological demands that challenge their antioxidant system. Migrating birds presumably respond to these oxidative challenges by up-regulating protective endogenous systems or accumulating dietary antioxidants at stopover sites, although our understanding of the pre-migration preparations and mid-migration responses of birds to such oxidative challenges is as yet incomplete. Here we review evidence from field and captive-bird studies that address the following questions: (1) Do migratory birds build …

Dynamic Crop Allocation In The Presence Of Two-Season Crop Rotation Benefits, Onur Boyabatli, Javad Nasiry, Yangfang Zhou Oct 2021

Dynamic Crop Allocation In The Presence Of Two-Season Crop Rotation Benefits, Onur Boyabatli, Javad Nasiry, Yangfang Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The objective of this chapter is twofold. First, to study how a farmer should dynamically allocate farmland between two crops when the crops have rotation benefits across growing seasons, i.e., when it is more profitable to grow a crop on rotated farmland (where the other crop was grown) than on non-rotated farmland (where the same crop was grown). Second, to develop a practically implementable heuristic allocation policy and examine its performance in comparison with other heuristic policies commonly suggested in the literature. While the chapter is based on our companion paper (Boyabatlı et al (Management Sci 65(5):2060–2076, 2019)), we characterize …

Sacrality In Modern Ukrainian Poetics: Metamorphoses Of Values, Iryna Lazorevych Oct 2021

Sacrality In Modern Ukrainian Poetics: Metamorphoses Of Values, Iryna Lazorevych

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This is a study of the influence of religious sacrality on modern Ukrainian literature, particularly poetry, analyzing those sacred meanings that the current Ukrainian mentality actively uses. So far, it eclectically synthesizes the ideological impulses of traditional Christian religiosity (which even in the times of Communism retained its natural strength, especially in the Western regions of Ukraine), and elements of Soviet ideologemes and pragmatism of the modern transitional period. At the same time, it uses certain inclinations to new communication with sacred, which is felt by some of the important creators of modern Ukrainian culture. In this article, the author …

The Role Pde11a4 Signaling And Compartmentalization In Social Behavior, Kaitlyn Pilarzyk Oct 2021

The Role Pde11a4 Signaling And Compartmentalization In Social Behavior, Kaitlyn Pilarzyk

Theses and Dissertations

People tend to be social by nature. Being socially connected not only helps people live longer and healthier lives, but being an engaged and contributing member of society strengthens our communities overall. Maintaining intact social behaviors is key to maintaining this wellbeing, with disruptions negatively affecting both mental and physical health. Indeed, social isolation and feelings of loneliness can significantly increase a person’s risk of premature death, heart disease, and stroke as well as depression, anxiety, suicide, and dementia. Maintaining the ability to create and store social memory with age is, therefore, key to maintaining proper social behaviors. Unfortunately, individuals …

Impact Of Acetylcholine On Internal Pathways To Basal Amygdala Pyramidal Neurons, Tyler Daniel Anderson-Sieg Oct 2021

Impact Of Acetylcholine On Internal Pathways To Basal Amygdala Pyramidal Neurons, Tyler Daniel Anderson-Sieg

Theses and Dissertations

The basolateral nuclear complex of the amygdala (BNC) – consisting of the lateral (LA), basolateral (BL), and basomedial nuclei (BM) – detects salient environmental stimuli (cue-detection) and motivates appropriate behavioral responses to their implied meaning (cue-guided behavior) via a precise pattern of internal circuitry. Glutamatergic signals representing environmental stimuli enter the LA and split into parallel streams that activate pyramidal neurons (PNs) in the anterior and posterior BL (BLa and BLp), which putatively mediate negative and positive emotions, respectively. The BL is the most densely innervated target of the cholinergic basal forebrain (CBF) and ACh transients (phasic ACh) in cortex …

Impact Of Acetylcholine On Amygdala Network Oscillations, Joshua Xavier Bratsch-Prince Oct 2021

Impact Of Acetylcholine On Amygdala Network Oscillations, Joshua Xavier Bratsch-Prince

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to appropriately respond to and store memories of emotionally salient events is a critical feature of survival. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is a temporal lobe structure that is essential in mediating emotional behaviors, learning, and memory. Important to circuit function are synchronized neuronal oscillations. Different oscillatory signatures are implicated in mediating different aspects of behavior and learning and memory processes: theta frequency (3-12 Hz) oscillations represent “online” states and are important for information encoding and learning, and sharp wave ripples (SWRs) represent more “offline” states that are important for the consolidation of memory. In the BLA, both of …

Creating Crescent: Using Youth Participatory Action Research (Ypar) And Public Media To Promote Epistemic Agency Among Black Girls In South Carolina, Salandra Bowman Oct 2021

Creating Crescent: Using Youth Participatory Action Research (Ypar) And Public Media To Promote Epistemic Agency Among Black Girls In South Carolina, Salandra Bowman

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses womanist methodology and youth participatory action research (YPAR), centering the ways of knowing of Black girls, with a focus on epistemic agency, to engage Black girls in the production of educational media. Such a study is necessary because Black girls are underrepresented in educational media, overrepresented in cases of school discipline, and overrepresented in reports of physical violence in schools. As public media is recognized as a transformative intervention in improving learning outcomes for children, addressing the underrepresentation of Black girlhood therein creates opportunities to address these intersecting issues and create humanizing educational media for all students. …

Real Time Neurochemical Analysis Of The Brain For Pharmacological Treatments In Mood Disorders And Neurodegeneration, Anna Marie Buchanan Oct 2021

Real Time Neurochemical Analysis Of The Brain For Pharmacological Treatments In Mood Disorders And Neurodegeneration, Anna Marie Buchanan

Theses and Dissertations

The monoamine, serotonin, is an important modulator in the central nervous system. It is believed to participate in a variety of functions ranging from moderating stress, promoting brain plasticity, and regulating sleep and appetite. Dysfunction of the serotonergic system has also been implicated in mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. While serotonin is of great interest to the research community, real-time in vivo serotonin dynamics remain understudied. This is because direct measurement of fast serotonergic transmission is analytically challenging. In 2009, the Hashemi lab pioneered the direct measurement of endogenously evoked serotonin using a method called fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV). …

The Criminalization Of Hiv And Hiv Stigma, Deanna Cann Oct 2021

The Criminalization Of Hiv And Hiv Stigma, Deanna Cann

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to contain the HIV epidemic, lawmakers implemented various pieces of legislation across the United States, including laws that prohibit people living with HIV (PLHIV) from engaging in various behaviors without first disclosing their HIV-status. Public health scholars claim that this criminalization of HIV serves to increase stigma toward PLHIV, rather than prevent its transmission. Limited research has supported a connection between HIV exposure laws and increased stigma toward PLHIV. Still, researchers have yet to establish a causal relationship, and we know little regarding the mechanisms through which these laws serve to reproduce stigma. This study aims to …

Land, Racial Formations, And Power: Exploring The Network Of Power Relationships During Climate Change Planning In Coastal South Carolina, Teresa Norman Oct 2021

Land, Racial Formations, And Power: Exploring The Network Of Power Relationships During Climate Change Planning In Coastal South Carolina, Teresa Norman

Theses and Dissertations

Climate change projections for the coastline of South Carolina predict that by mid-century there will be around 1.2 feet of sea level rise, and potentially up to 4 feet of rise by 2100. Additionally, climate change is linked to intensified hurricanes, a hazard for the South Carolina coastline every year. Both of these scenarios result in increases in the regularity and severity of coastal flooding, making the threat of permanent or temporary displacement (relocation) from coastal lands a reality. This is a particularly pressing matter for African American communities already made vulnerable by the long history of racial discrimination in …

Food Choice Decision-Making Among School-Going Adolescents Amidst The Nutrition Transition In Urban Accra, Ghana, Krystal Krsna Rampalli Oct 2021

Food Choice Decision-Making Among School-Going Adolescents Amidst The Nutrition Transition In Urban Accra, Ghana, Krystal Krsna Rampalli

Theses and Dissertations

Like many countries of the world, Ghana is experiencing a nutrition transition and rising non-communicable diseases. Adolescents are susceptible to diet-related health risks as they experience significant physical and psychological changes, which are happening in tandem with food environment changes, including widespread proliferation of large portion and package sizes of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods. Both local and multinational food and beverage companies have encouraged consumption of their products through various marketing tactics targeted directly to adolescents. Some of these tactics include the use of characters or celebrity endorsement, promotional discounts, and appeal to sociocultural values, including messages about body size preferences. …
