Cryo-Em Structure Of Mechanosensitive Channel Ynai Using Sma2000: Challenges And Opportunities, Claudio Catalano, Danya Ben-Hail, Weihua Qiu, Paul Blount, Amedee Des Georges, Youzhong Guo Oct 2021

Cryo-Em Structure Of Mechanosensitive Channel Ynai Using Sma2000: Challenges And Opportunities, Claudio Catalano, Danya Ben-Hail, Weihua Qiu, Paul Blount, Amedee Des Georges, Youzhong Guo

Publications and Research

Mechanosensitive channels respond to mechanical forces exerted on the cell membrane and play vital roles in regulating the chemical equilibrium within cells and their environment. Highresolution structural information is required to understand the gating mechanisms of mechanosensitive channels. Protein-lipid interactions are essential for the structural and functional integrity of mechanosensitive channels, but detergents cannot maintain the crucial native lipid environment for purified mechanosensitive channels. Recently, detergent-free systems have emerged as alternatives for membrane protein structural biology. This report shows that while membrane-active polymer, SMA2000, could retain some native cell membrane lipids on the transmembrane domain of the mechanosensitive-like YnaI channel, …

A Politics And Ethics Of Viewing Photographs Of Duterte’S “Drug War”: Towards Reconceptualizing The Political Community, Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo Oct 2021

A Politics And Ethics Of Viewing Photographs Of Duterte’S “Drug War”: Towards Reconceptualizing The Political Community, Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper proposes a framework for a politics and ethics of viewing photographs of atrocities and suffering through an analysis of photographs of Rodrigo Duterte’s “drug war” in the Philippines and responses to these images. It situates these politics and ethics of viewing in a context of violent othering and Ariella Azoulay’s conceptualization of “regime-made disaster.” This framework is grounded on fellow-feeling and imagined identification as well as on the relationality, powers of mourning, and ethical responsibility that Judith Butler asserts and is operationalized through the “civil contract of photography” called forth by Azoulay. Following Azoulay and Butler, this paper …

The Haunting Power Of Sound In Aswang, Katrina Macapagal Oct 2021

The Haunting Power Of Sound In Aswang, Katrina Macapagal

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper examines the audibility of Aswang (2019), the first feature-length documentary that tackles Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs. I locate the documentary against the audibility of terror produced by the Duterte regime, accentuated by the primary metaphor of the aswang legend where the documentary initially draws its political charge. Inspired by theories of sound and haptic listening, I argue that Aswang, through its composition of key sound elements such as the voice-over, music, and urban noise, configures an overall audibility that amplifies, rather than reduces, the humanity of the documentary’s subjects.

Prophets, Pegon, And Piety; The Javanese Layang Ambiya, Ronit Ricci Oct 2021

Prophets, Pegon, And Piety; The Javanese Layang Ambiya, Ronit Ricci

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The tales of the prophets are among the most popular textual traditions across the Islamic world and Java proves no exception. Beginning with the first human and first prophet Nabi Adam, these often vast collections recount the biographies of all those viewed as prophets in Islam, ultimately leading up to the “seal of the prophets”, Muhammad. Many manuscripts of this genre were composed and copied in Javanese, in different periods, locales, and milieus, opening a window to how these core Islamic stories and the messages they carry were understood and transmitted in Java. The essay explores one example, a Layang …

To Fast Or Not To Fast?; Pangulu Ki Amad Kategan Challenges His Sultan In The Sĕrat Nitik Sultan Agung, Els Bogaerts Oct 2021

To Fast Or Not To Fast?; Pangulu Ki Amad Kategan Challenges His Sultan In The Sĕrat Nitik Sultan Agung, Els Bogaerts

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Sĕrat Nitik Sultan Agung texts relate how Sultan Agung (r. 1613-1645) in a miraculous way conquers the surrounding world. He subjugates its inhabitants to Mataram and converts them to Islam. The selected fragment is an interesting example of how the sultan – refusing to fast during the month of Shawwāl – impresses the people in his environment with his supernatural power, and in particular Ki Amad Kategan, his pangulu, who tries to match his strength with that of the sultan. The two characters engage in a dispute on Islamic matters. Firstly, I discuss the figure of Ki Amad Kategan …

Metaphor In Sĕrat Cariyos Ringgit Purwa Lampahan Dora Wĕca Mawi Sĕkar Macapat By Raden Mas Panji Arja Suparta, Siti Muslifah

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Sĕrat cariyos ringgit purwa lampahan Dora Wĕca mawi sĕkar macapat is an example of a translation of a wayang play into poetry, a popular phenomenon in the late nineteenth century. To create aesthetic effects Raden Mas Panji Arja Suparta, the author of the text, makes ample use of metaphors. Some of these metaphors are well-known literary clichés. Others, which are woven into riddles (wangsalan), bring the real world of everyday life in Java vividly into view.

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Brd2 belongs to the BET family of epigenetic transcriptional co-regulators that act as adaptor-scaffolds for the assembly of chromatin-modifying complexes and other factors at target gene promoters. Brd2 is a protooncogene and candidate gene for juvenile myoclonic epilepsy in humans, a homeobox gene regulator in Drosophila, and a maternal-zygotic factor and cell death modulator that is necessary for normal development of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). As two copies of Brd2 exist in zebrafish, we use antisense morpholino knockdown to probe the role of paralog Brd2b, as a comparative study to Brd2a, the ortholog of human Brd2. A deficiency …

Flora And Fauna Based On Old Javanese Literary Reading In The Malang Highlands Region, Blasius Suprapta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Towards the end of the twelfth century (1104 Ś = AD 1182) until the middle of the fourteenth (1281 Ś = AD 1359), a Hindu-Buddhist civilization, consisting of the Akuwu of Tumapĕl - the kingdom of Siŋhasari – and the kingdom of Majapahit, developed a well-organized social and cultural life in the Malang Highlands Region of Java. This included the management of natural resources, flora and fauna. Although their variety has been well documented in Old Javanese literature and inscriptions, so far there has not been an in-depth study identifying the diversity of flora and fauna of the region during …

“Thrilla In Manila”: Troubling Theatricality And Uneasy Spectator Affects Surrounding The Ringside Bar Midget Boxing And Wrestling, Neslie Carol Tan

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper illustrates how performance and affect inform disability politics in the case of Filipino Little People wrestlers and boxers at the Ringside Bar along a red-light district in Makati City, Philippines. The archive of the study focuses on the reception of its primarily foreign visitors as manifested online, including the bar’s unofficial Facebook account, review-based websites, and select travel and expatriate blogs/vlogs where reviews of these attractions most actively circulate. Warshipping: Hacking The Mailroom, Jackson Szwast, Bryson Payne

KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Everyone knows what package shipping is, but not everyone knows what warshipping is. Corporate mailrooms are rarely considered as part of the cybersecurity attack surface of most organizations, but they offer physical access to millions of uninspected packages daily. UPS shipped 5.5 billion items last year, with their daily average being 21.9 million items and operating through 1,800 locations in 2020. FedEx shipped 6.5 million packages daily and operates 2,150 locations. The United States Postal Service delivered 143 billion pieces of mail in 2019. Increasingly the world’s consumers are relying on e-commerce, and during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, package deliveries …

Effect Of Water-Soluble Browning Products In Heated Herbages On Rumen Microorganisms, E. Touno, A. Takenaka, T. Kondo, O. Tanaka, M. Murai

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

When feed is heated, browning can occur. This browning is detrimental to both the value of feed and physiological functioning of the animal. Browning occurs when polymeric substances are produced during the Maillard reaction. Indigestible soluble Maillard reaction products could affect nitrogen utilization by ruminants. A method has been established for isolation of water-soluble browning products using a reversed phase column. In the present work, the effect of water-soluble browning products isolated from heated herbage on rumen microorganisms was investigated. A solution of browning products was added to the medium 10 to obtain final concentration of 0, 0.5 and 2.0 …
