Genome-Wide Analysis Of Peg3 Downstream Genes, Subash Ghimire
Genome-Wide Analysis Of Peg3 Downstream Genes, Subash Ghimire
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Paternally expressed gene 3 (Peg3) is an imprinted gene encoding a DNA-binding protein that is a predicted transcriptional repressor. The two studies presented here demonstrate the repressive functions of PEG3 in regulating different cellular processes and pathways, which were observed by analyzing the ChIP-seq results systematically using both bioinformatics tools and manual inspection of significant peaks. In the first part of the work, genome-wide features of ChIP-seq peaks were characterized and the potential de novo binding motif was reevaluated. Results suggested the transcriptional repressor role of PEG3 by binding to the conserved sequence motif of the target genes. …

An Erp Study Of The Effects Of Iconic And Nonsense Gestures On Memory Formation, Brianna E. Cairney
An Erp Study Of The Effects Of Iconic And Nonsense Gestures On Memory Formation, Brianna E. Cairney
LSU Master's Theses
Co-speech gesture is an important part of human communication and aids in comprehension, learning, and memory. The addition of iconic gestures to speech has been shown in prior work to enhance memory for the speech. However, it remains unclear as to whether this benefit requires gestures to be meaningful, or, conversely, if any attentionally-engaging gesture will enhance memory. In the current study, we tested two theories to explain the mnemonic benefits of co-speech gesture: Dual Coding Theory, which attributes these benefits to multimodal encoding and enhanced imageability, and Attentional Highlighting Theory, which posits that gestures draw more attention to concurrent …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
River buffalo is an agriculturally important species with many traits, such as disease tolerance, which promote its use worldwide. Highly contiguous genome assemblies of the river buffalo, goat, pig, human and two cattle subspecies were aligned to study gene gains and losses and signs of positive selection. The gene families that have changed significantly in river buffalo since divergence from cattle play important roles in protein degradation, the olfactory receptor system, detoxification and the immune system. We used the branch site model in PAML to analyse single-copy orthologs to identify positively selected genes that may be involved in skin differentiation, …

Effective measurement of seasonal variations in the timing and amount of production is critical to managing spatially heterogeneous agroecosystems in a changing climate. Although numerous technologies for such measurements are available, their relationships to one another at a continental extent are unknown. Using data collected from across the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network and other networks, we investigated correlations among key metrics representing primary production, phenology, and carbon fluxes in croplands, grazing lands, and crop-grazing integrated systems across the continental U.S. Metrics we examined included gross primary productivity (GPP) estimated from eddy covariance (EC) towers and modelled from the Landsat …

Cytokine Exposure Mediates Transcriptional Activation Of The Orphan Nuclear Receptor Nur77 In Hematopoietic Cells, Orsola Di Martino, Haixia Niu, Gayla Hadwiger, Margaret A Ferris, John S Welch
Open Access Publications
The orphan nuclear receptor Nur77 is an immediate-early response gene that based on tissue and cell context is implicated in a plethora of cellular processes, including proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metabolism, and inflammation. Nur77 has a ligand-binding pocket that is obstructed by hydrophobic side groups. Naturally occurring, cell-endogenous ligands have not been identified, and Nur77 transcriptional activity is thought to be regulated through posttranslational modification and modulation of protein levels. To determine whether Nur77 is transcriptionally active in hematopoietic cells in vivo, we used an upstream activating sequence (UAS)-GFP transgenic reporter. We found that Nur77 is transcriptionally inactive in vivo in …
