Multifaceted Approach To Understanding Acinetobacter Baumannii Biofilm Formation And Drug Resistance, Jessie L. Allen Nov 2021

Multifaceted Approach To Understanding Acinetobacter Baumannii Biofilm Formation And Drug Resistance, Jessie L. Allen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Acinetobacter baumannii is a multi-drug resistant nosocomial pathogen known for causing wound related- and respiratory-infections. It is currently on the WHO’s list of critical pathogens due to its broadly drug resistant nature and the constant appearance of pan-resistant isolates. A majority of the infections caused by this organism are biofilm associated, however there is limited existing knowledge regarding the mechanisms used to engage in this multicellular lifestyle. As such, we set out to explore the factors influencing this behavior using an 10,000+ isolate transposon mutant library of A. baumannii strain AB5075. Of the strains tested, 6.45% demonstrated some level of …

Privies As Portals: A Ceramic And Glass Bottle Analysis Of A Late 19th Century Household Privy In Ellenton, Fl, Shana Boyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses ceramic and glass bottles recovered from a privy feature at the Gamble Plantation site to examine the manifestations of Victorian ideals and health practices of a wealthy white family living in Florida’s “pioneer” landscape. Through the analysis of these artifacts this thesis aims to understand the archaeology of status and consumption while evaluating how class can impact consumer behaviors. Artifacts for analysis were collected in the 2017 and 2018 field seasons using the systematic sampling method which led to the discovery of the privy feature at the end of the 2017 season. From the privy to the …

A Multimodal Literacy Exploration: Lived Experiences Of Haitian Immigrant Adolescent Girls In The Bahamas, Natasha Swann Nov 2021

A Multimodal Literacy Exploration: Lived Experiences Of Haitian Immigrant Adolescent Girls In The Bahamas, Natasha Swann

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the geographic landscape of our world increasingly changes, a constant migration is occurring, with people seeking refuge and asylum. Many of those seeking a better way of life are children and adolescents. It is important not only to consider and accommodate how children and adolescents develop and grow, but how they do so in a country that is not their home and with language and literacy practices that are often new to them. Adjusting and acculturating into host countries might compound issues youth experience during child and adolescence development. This study provided a space and a platform for immigrant …

In Vivo Evaluation Of Macrophage Polarization In Response To Raspberry Ketone-Loaded Chitosan Membranes, Melika Esmaeili Rad Nov 2021

In Vivo Evaluation Of Macrophage Polarization In Response To Raspberry Ketone-Loaded Chitosan Membranes, Melika Esmaeili Rad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Raspberry ketone (RK) is a natural compound with anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit tissue healing. Effects of RK on inflammation and healing were evaluated by examining macrophage polarization in response to guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes loaded with 0,100 or 500µg RK over 4 weeks in a rat calvarial model. Initially, pro-inflammatory M1 macrophage phenotypes remove damaged tissues and bacteria and then transition to pro-healing M2 phenotypes to coordinate tissue repair and formation in wounds. Immunohistochemical staining was used to characterize M1 and M2 macrophage phenotypes using CD68 as a PAN macrophage marker, iNOS for M1 and CD206 for M2 …

The Mind Creates What It Needs, Matthew Corey Hawk Nov 2021

The Mind Creates What It Needs, Matthew Corey Hawk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This manuscript of original poems, entitled "The Mind Creates What It Needs," explores themes of home, grief, and mental health primarily through sonic play and metaphor. With fairly rigid formalism and general restraint from self-divulging, this work nevertheless examines where, how, and with whom we build community; how to process loss in the face of death and dying; as well as the healthy (and unhealthy) avenues for maintaining one's mental health in the face of difficult considerations such as these. Crucial to the collection is the interweaving of these varied themes over the course of the work; the ebbs and …

The Ecological Role Of Cassiopea In Shallow Mangrove Habitats, David Marcel Durieux Nov 2021

The Ecological Role Of Cassiopea In Shallow Mangrove Habitats, David Marcel Durieux

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea sp., can be locally abundant in shallow mangrove habitats throughout the tropics and subtropics. Unlike other jellyfish, Cassiopea sp. are epibenthic. Due to this unique lifestyle and their ability to achieve high population densities, an understanding is needed of their ecological impacts both individually and in aggregations, particularly given that Cassiopea sp. ranges are expanding poleward due to global climate change. We quantified the fluid flow produced by Cassiopea sp. feeding currents and found that an average-sized Cassiopea sp. can transport over 200 l/h of water in the vertical excurrent jet of their feeding current. Populations of …

Regional Expansion And Evaluation Of Potential Chemical Control For Invasive Apple Snails (Pomacea Maculata) In Southwest Louisiana, Julian M. Lucero

LSU Master's Theses

The integration of monitoring and chemical control is an efficient strategy for managing invasive apple snails, Pomacea maculata, in the rice (Oryza sativa L.) and crawfish systems of southwest Louisiana. However, their current distribution, expansion rates, and susceptibility to chemical control methods in this area are not well known. This study evaluated the expansion of P. maculata in southwest Louisiana and assessed potential chemical control for P. maculata among toxicity assays using various application rates. The effects of potential chemical control were also assessed on a non-target species, the red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii). P. maculata …

Sedation And Acute Encephalopathy In A Pediatric Patient Following Ingestion Of Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol Gummies, Peter Akpunonu, Regan A. Baum, Andrew Reckers, Blake Davidson, Ross Ellison, Matthew Riley, Jordan Trecki, Roy Gerona

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC) is an isomer of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9 THC), the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in the marijuana plant. Typically found at lower concentrations in marijuana, delta-8 THC exhibits psychoactive properties similar to delta-9 THC. Products containing delta-8 THC are readily available across the US and currently there is a lack of available confirmatory testing specific to delta-8 THC as there is cross-reactivity to other naturally occurring cannabinoids in standard immunoassays. Pediatric exposures to this substance are on the rise.

CASE REPORT We present a case with laboratory confirmation of a previously healthy 2-year-old girl ingesting approximately 15 mg/kg …

Takahashi Rumiko And The Turning Point In The History Of Manga And Anime, Natsume Fusanosuke, Jon Holt, Teppei Fukuda

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Takahashi Rumiko’s entry onto the manga scene represented the turning point in the history of manga and anime. This turning point signifies the emergence of the genre of romantic comedy (rabukome = “love comedy”)—a romantic relationship-centered genre certainly common to shōjo (girls’) comics category at the time—now beginning to appear in shōnen (boys’) comics, too.

Let It Rip: The Mechanics Of Self-Bisection In Asexual Planarians Determines Their Population Reproductive Strategies, T. Goel, Danielle Ireland, Vir Shetty , '22, Christina Rabeler, P. H. Diamond, Eva-Maria S. Collins

Biology Faculty Works

Asexual freshwater planarians reproduce by transverse bisection (binary fission) into two pieces. This process produces a head and a tail, which fully regenerate within 1–2 weeks. How planarians split into two offspring—using only their musculature and substrate traction—is a challenging biomechanics problem. We found that three different species, Dugesia japonica, Girardia tigrina and Schmidtea mediterranea, have evolved three different mechanical solutions to self-bisect. Using time lapse imaging of the fission process, we quantitatively characterize the main steps of division in the three species and extract the distinct and shared key features. Across the three species, planarians actively alter …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nicotine and alcohol use is highly prevalent among patients with serious mental illness, including those with schizophrenia (SCZ), and this co-occurrence can lead to a worsening of medical and psychiatric morbidity. While the mechanistic drivers of co-occurring SCZ, nicotine use and alcohol use are unknown, emerging evidence suggests that the use of drugs during adolescence may increase the probability of developing psychiatric disorders. The current study used the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion (NVHL) rat model of SCZ, which has previously been shown to have enhanced nicotine behavioral sensitization and, following adolescent alcohol, increased alcohol consumption. Given how commonly alcohol is …

Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Increases The Excitability Of Pre-Motor Glutamatergic Dorsal Vagal Complex Neurons From Hyperglycemic Mice, Jordan B. Wean, Bret N. Smith Nov 2021

Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 Increases The Excitability Of Pre-Motor Glutamatergic Dorsal Vagal Complex Neurons From Hyperglycemic Mice, Jordan B. Wean, Bret N. Smith

Physiology Faculty Publications

Intracerebroventricular administration of the protein hormone fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) to the hindbrain produces potent antidiabetic effects in hyperglycemic mice that are likely mediated through a vagal parasympathetic mechanism. FGF19 increases the synaptic excitability of parasympathetic motor neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) from hyperglycemic, but not normoglycemic, mice but the source of this synaptic input is unknown. Neurons in the area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) express high levels of FGF receptors and exert glutamatergic control over the DMV. This study tested the hypothesis that FGF19 increases glutamate release in the DMV …

Better Together: Analysis Of Integrated Acoustic And Visual Methods When Surveying A Cetacean Community, L. Dalpaz, A. D. Paro, F. G. Daura-Jorge, M. Rossi-Santos, T. F. Norris, S. N. Ingram, L. L. Wedekin

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Understanding the relative performance of data collection methods is critical for the production of robust results in any biological field study. This is particularly relevant for monitoring studies of rare and inconspicuous species, such as some cetaceans. Here, we compared how passive acoustic and visual survey methods performed when surveying a multispecies cetacean community in a large-scale survey area and whether the simultaneous application of these methods leads to complementary results. For both methods we compared (1) frequency of unscheduled survey stoppages, (2) detection ranges, (3) success in identifying species, (4) precedence of either method in synchronous detections, (5) detection …

Heterospecific Coprophagy: Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura) Feeding On Cougar (Puma Concolor) Feces, Mauricio González-Jáuregui, Juan Pablo Esparza-Carlos, Margarida Francina Barber Mir Nov 2021

Heterospecific Coprophagy: Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura) Feeding On Cougar (Puma Concolor) Feces, Mauricio González-Jáuregui, Juan Pablo Esparza-Carlos, Margarida Francina Barber Mir

Western North American Naturalist

Records of coprophagic behavior in vultures from both the Old and the New World are rare. We know of only a handful of reports for Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura). Herein we report a specific event of heterocoprophagia: the consumption of 1-day-old puma (Puma concolor) feces by C. aura in the Manantlán Biosphere Reserve (Jalisco, México). Feces of P. concolor play a role in chemical communication by male pumas, who generally do not cover their feces. Females and juveniles attempt to cover theirs. It is not known whether puma scats provide any nutrients to vultures. …

Investigating The Role And Localization Of B Cells In The Red-Eared Slider, Trachemys Scripta, Whitney Hurst

Theses and Dissertations

The immune system of humans has been studied extensively, but very little is known about the immune response in reptiles. Our lab has been working to better understand the immune system of a pond turtle, Trachemys scripta (red-eared slider). Turtles are known for their longevity and their immune system should play an important role in their ability to survive. Our main interest is understanding B cell function and location in slider turtles. B cells are a type of white blood cell that play a vital role in the immune response of humans, with the majority secreting antibodies that mark invading …

Fighting Mass Diffusion Of Fake News On Social Media, Abdallah Musmar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fake news has been considered one of the most challenging problems in the last few years. The effects of spreading fake news over social media platforms are widely observed across the globe as the depth and velocity of fake news reach far more than real news (Vosoughi et al., 2018). The plan for the following dissertation is to investigate the mass spread of fake news across social media and propose a framework to fight the spread of fake news by mixing preventive methods that could hinder the overall percentage of fake news sharing. We plan to create a study on …

Unraveling The Role Of Novel G5 Peptidase Family Proteins In Virulence And Cell Envelope Biogenesis Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Stephanie M. Marroquin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Virulence factors and the bacterial cell envelope are two important components in S. aureus pathogenesis and survival. More importantly, understanding the regulation of these cellular processes is crucial to further understanding and combating this successful pathogen. To date, numerous factors have been identified as playing a role in the regulation of Agr activity in S. aureus, including transcription factors, antisense RNAs, and host elements. Herein we investigate the product of SAUSA300_1984 (termed MroQ), a transmembrane G5 peptidase family protein, as a novel effector of this system. Using a USA300 mroQ mutant we observed a drastic reduction in proteolysis, hemolysis, and …
