Objective: To assess the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for in vivo arthroscopic monitoring of cartilage defects. Method: Sharp and blunt cartilage grooves were induced in the radiocarpal and intercarpal joints of Shetland ponies and monitored at baseline (0 weeks) and at three follow-up timepoints (11, 23, and 39 weeks) by measuring near-infrared spectra in vivo at and around the grooves. The animals were sacrificed after 39 weeks and the joints were harvested. Spectra were reacquired ex vivo to ensure reliability of in vivo measurements and for reference analyses. Additionally, cartilage thickness and instantaneous modulus were determined via computed tomography …

Getting Lead Off The Landscape: A Theory And Data-Driven Approach To Increase Non-Lead Ammunition Use Among Hunters In The California Condor Range Of Utah (Usa), Jacob C. Richards, Jordan W. Smith
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
The leading cause of mortality in California condors (condors) is lead poisoning, which occurs when condors ingest lead-based ammunition left in carcasses. As a critically endangered species with approximately 100 individuals remaining in the American southwest, increasing the adoption of non-lead ammunition is essential to the recovery of the species. In Utah, the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) uses communication with hunters as the primary tool for increasing the adoption of non-lead ammunition in southwestern Utah. In this research, we use social science theory and data collected from a survey of hunters throughout the region to develop a strategic communication …
Emerging Avenues Immunotherapy For The Management Of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, Steven G. Gray
Emerging Avenues Immunotherapy For The Management Of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, Steven G. Gray
Articles
Background: The role of immunotherapy in cancer is now well-established, and therapeutic options such as checkpoint inhibitors are increasingly being approved in many cancers such as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare orphan disease associated with prior exposure to asbestos, with a dismal prognosis. Evidence from clinical trials of checkpoint inhibitors in this rare disease, suggest that such therapies may play a role as a treatment option for a proportion of patients with this cancer. Main text: While the majority of studies currently focus on the established checkpoint inhibitors (CTLA4 and PD1/ PDL1), there …

The Future Of Biotechnology: Accelerating Geneediting Advancements Through Non-Exclusive Licenses And Open-Source Access Of Crispr-Cas9, Rissberger, Emily N.
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
From the immune system of bacteria comes a promising new gene-editing technology, CRISPR-Cas9. Discovered in 2012, CRISPR-Cas9 has already been named one of the fastest, easiest, and cheapest gene-editing technologies. With this reputation, CRISPR-Cas9 shows promise in the research and treatments of a wide array of diseases: cancer, blood disorders, blindness, AIDS, Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Huntington’s disease, and even COVID-19 to name a few. This relatively new technology has brought hope to researchers, doctors, and patients alike; however, current biotechnology licensing practices could hinder CRISPR-Cas9’s groundbreaking potential. This article examines common biotechnology licensing practices, specifically the practices of two …

While Pacific salmon are economically and culturally important worldwide, Alaska, USA is one of the few remaining places on earth where sustainable management of salmon is possible, even in the face of wide-ranging threats, including overharvesting and the impacts of climate change. A continuing challenge that we face is to understand the ecological processes that result in sustainable salmon populations and report that science to stakeholders in a way that promotes decision-making to avoid the destruction of salmon populations that has occurred in most areas of the lower 48 states. To address this challenge, our studies in the southern Kenai …

he Blackfoot Reservoir volcanic field (BRVF), Idaho, USA, is a bimodal volcanic field that has hosted silicic eruptions during at least two episodes, as recently as 58 ka. Using newly collected ground and boat-based gravity data, two large negative anomalies (-16 mGal) are modeled as shallow (< 1 km) intrusions beneath a NE-trending alignment of BRVF rhyolite domes and tuff rings. Given the trade-off between density contrast and model volume, best-fit gravity inversion models yield a total intrusion volume of 50-120 km3; a density contrast of -400 kg m-3 results in two intrusions, each ~9 km x 4.5 km and about 0.5 km thick, with cumulative volume of 100 km3. A network of 340°-360° trending faults lies directly above and on the margins of the mapped gravity anomalies. Most of …

Impact Of Metarhizium Anisopliae And Beauveria Bassiana On Bee Pollinators (Hymenoptera: Apidae), And Modelling Their Performance In Bee Colonies, Evanson Rigan Omuse
All Master’s Theses
Insect pollination sustains the biodiversity of 90% of wild plants, and 75% of crop species for food and nutritional security. Chemical pesticides used to manage arthropod pests constitute a key driver to the unprecedented declines of insect pollinators worldwide. Hence, biopesticides based on entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are being promoted as safer alternatives. The effects of EPF on insect pollinators have not been investigated in detail for the application in pollinator-resourced crop systems. Thus, this study screened EPF isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae (ICIPE 7, ICIPE 20,ICIPE 62, ICIPE 69 and ICIPE 78), and Beauveria bassiana (ICIPE 284) for their effect on the …
Comparing Mitochondrial Gene Sequences Of Aedes Aegypti In East Africa To The Global Anthropophilic Strain, Brian Bwanya Edward
Comparing Mitochondrial Gene Sequences Of Aedes Aegypti In East Africa To The Global Anthropophilic Strain, Brian Bwanya Edward
All Master’s Theses
Advances in genotyping methods have shed more light into mosquito genetics and improved our understanding of vector-borne disease transmission cycles. Outside of Africa, Aedes aegypti, the main vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses, prefers humans for a blood meal, resting and breeding in close association with human settlements. However, in its native African ecology, both domestic (Aedes aegypti aegypti) and sylvatic (forest) (Aedes aegypti formosus) lineages occur. Further, the African Ae. aegypti populations have been found to exhibit divergence in typically conserved mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes and traits of epidemiological …

Perfomance Of Exotic Chicken Fed Insect-Based Diets Effect On Laying Capacity, Egg Characteristics And Economic Returns, Esther Khayanga Sumbule
All Master’s Theses
Increasing demand for soybean meal and fishmeal for use in formulating animal feeds has led to increased prices and moreover their availability in future might be limited. Insect rearing can be part of the solution because they take a short period to mature, require small space and fewer resources to start. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of substituting fishmeal (FM)with black soldier fly larvae (BSFLM) at different inclusion levels, as a protein source in exotic chick, grower, and layers diets. The following parameters were measured, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), laying percentage, egg characteristics …
“Lions On The Beach”: Ernest Hemingway And Postcolonial Representations Of Cuba As A ‘Dark Shadow’ Of Spain, Laila Jackson
“Lions On The Beach”: Ernest Hemingway And Postcolonial Representations Of Cuba As A ‘Dark Shadow’ Of Spain, Laila Jackson
ScholarsArchive Data
Hemingway represents both Spain and Cuba in very different lights, despite the similarities inherent in the countries. As a colonial holding of Spain until 1898, and a U.S. holding until 1902, Cuba is an off shoot of Spanish culture, with differences based on the indigenous people conquered in the 1500s. Though unsurprising, it is interesting that both nations drew Hemingway’s attention. For Hemingway, Spain represented this noble beauty, this majestic heaven on earth, even while in the midst of war. When he writes about Spain, Hemingway waxes romantic. However, this attitude isn’t reflected in his writings about Cuba, which focus …
Resilience In Cancer Patients, Lori A. Gardner
Resilience In Cancer Patients, Lori A. Gardner
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
The phenomenon of resilience has long been identified as a key talking point within the realm of overall mental health, but the concept’s specific meaning, qualities, and sources remain somewhat elusive. For those with chronic health conditions, resilience is often identified as essential to coping effectively with significant disruptions to daily activities. The purpose of this study was to better understand the concept of resilience and to determine themes that underlie resilience, specifically within a cancer patient population. This goal was addressed by using a qualitative approach to elicit commonalities among the experiences of cancer patients representing varying types and …
Lived Experience: The Training Of Therapists, Actors & Human Beings, Richard Williams
Lived Experience: The Training Of Therapists, Actors & Human Beings, Richard Williams
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
There is much in common between theater and therapy. Both happen live. Both are explorations of human experience. Both require participants to be emotionally and mentally present. Both are hard to do well (and easy to do poorly). Training to be a clinical psychologist requires hours of coursework, administrative work, supervision, and on the job clinical experience. Training to be a professional theater maker or actor requires hours of rehearsal. The elements of acting are deconstructed during training so that rehearsal consists of voice-work, physical theater, scene study, etcetera. Training to be an actor entails much more practice of the …
Canine-Assisted Exposure Therapy, Stephanie B. Bono
Canine-Assisted Exposure Therapy, Stephanie B. Bono
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Fear and anxiety are natural reactions to actual threat conditions but can become “pathological” when over-generalized avoidance interferes with long-term wellbeing and valued living. Pervasive experiential avoidance hinders natural extinction processes as it reduces repeated contact with feared stimuli, a condition necessary for extinction to occur. Exposure therapy (ET) is a clinical analogue of extinction, and one of the best evidence-based treatments for fear and anxiety. However, ET’s usefulness suffers in real-world clinical conditions. The current conceptual paper proposes that ET’s limitations may be overcome through a tailored approach that integrates animal-assisted therapy (AAT), specifically the use of dogs, to …

Exploring The Rhetorical Constitution Of A Safe Space For Women In Begum Rokeya And Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's Works, Rifat Rezowana Siddiqui
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis studies the literary texts of two womanist authors, Begum Rokeya and Frances E. W. Harper, who are from different cultural and geographical background. The thesis attempts to uncover how both authors envision feminist utopian safe space for women of their society. Being the representative from the global south, Rokeya elaborates on 19th century social customs such as purdah and zenana to demonstrate sex segregation in her society. Harper, on the other hand, illustrates the social crisis of slavery and racism through her work. Criticizing the social norms that create obstacles for racialized women, both the authors assert the …

The Relationship Between Resilience, Stress & Ptsd, Hadeal Al-Hamdani Ms., Adam Runyan Mr, Carissa Philippi Mrs.
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts or memories of the traumatic event that hinder daily life activities of individuals with a PTSD diagnosis. Stress exposure has further been shown to exacerbate PTSD symptoms. Given that resilience has been shown to buffer levels of stress, the current study investigated whether resilience may moderate the relationship between stress and PTSD symptoms. Eighty-one participants over the age of 18 were recruited from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis and St. Louis community. Participants completed 3 self-report measures of resilience, exposure to stressful life events (e.g., Have you ever been in a …

Enhancing Harvester Safety And Traditional Food Access Through Participatory Mapping With The Ka’A’Gee Tu First Nation Of Kakisa, Northwest Territories, Neomi Jayaratne
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Northern Canada has struggled with various systemic challenges based on Eurocentric ideologies, policies, and practices. A major challenge Indigenous communities face North of the 60th parallel is their food security and sovereignty. Inuit, First Nation and Métis populations across the North experience 5 to 6 times higher levels of food insecurity compared to the National average (Food Secure Canada, 2020). These communities face concentrated levels of food system issues, which connect to other factors, such as, health and wellness, the supply chain of market foods, governance, a shift away from traditional foods, and the impacts of climate change. Climate …
Exercise To Delay The Progression Of Parkinson’S Disease, Kishorree Sangarapillai
Exercise To Delay The Progression Of Parkinson’S Disease, Kishorree Sangarapillai
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The overall purpose of the current thesis was to evaluate the effect of exercise on the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). While many studies exist that investigate the effect of exercise on PD, they focus on immediate improvements and rarely consider washout periods, or any prolonged effects of exercise interventions. Thus, while short-term benefits are achievable, the more valuable influences of exercise on disease progression are often overlooked. Interestingly, according to animal models, high intensity exercise and low intensity strategies such as sensory training have been argued to have the potential to delay disease progression. In humans, the most popular …
Extracting Metallurgy Contaminants And Hydrocarbons Removing From Water And Industrial Wastewater Using Enhanced Emulsion Liquid Membrane With Nanoparticles And Ionic Liquid, Qusay Al-Obaidi
Doctoral Dissertations
It is an uphill battle to extract pollutants such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and radioactive metals from water and industrial wastewater. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) is an emerging technology that combines extraction/recover and stripping in one stage to extract/recover heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons from water and wastewater. ELM devised a way to clean up heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons from the water and wastewater where its primary chemicals can be recycled and reused.
In this work, the Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) has been enhanced by adding nanoparticles and ionic liquid to significantly improve the recovery of the water-based contaminants of heavy …
Secure Data Sharing In Cloud And Iot By Leveraging Attribute-Based Encryption And Blockchain, Md Azharul Islam
Secure Data Sharing In Cloud And Iot By Leveraging Attribute-Based Encryption And Blockchain, Md Azharul Islam
Doctoral Dissertations
“Data sharing is very important to enable different types of cloud and IoT-based services. For example, organizations migrate their data to the cloud and share it with employees and customers in order to enjoy better fault-tolerance, high-availability, and scalability offered by the cloud. Wearable devices such as smart watch share user’s activity, location, and health data (e.g., heart rate, ECG) with the service provider for smart analytic. However, data can be sensitive, and the cloud and IoT service providers cannot be fully trusted with maintaining the security, privacy, and confidentiality of the data. Hence, new schemes and protocols are required …

Optimism At Work: Developing And Validating Scales To Measure Workplace Optimism, Sara Frost
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
A growing body of research has shown the benefits of optimism on health, socioeconomic status, and at work. This two-phase mixed-method study revised and validated an instrument to measure an employee’s personal experience with optimism in their workplace. This study also developed two additional scales to measure the degree to which individuals engage in optimistic leadership skills, and an organization’s readiness to cultivate optimism. In Phase 1, 697 responses from an online survey were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Regression analysis indicated that an employee’s personal experience of factors associated with optimism at work influenced their perception of …
Applying The Present To The Past: The Experiences Of Five Civil Rights Rabbis In Context Of Contemporary Leadership Theory, Bradley G. Levenberg
Applying The Present To The Past: The Experiences Of Five Civil Rights Rabbis In Context Of Contemporary Leadership Theory, Bradley G. Levenberg
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation examines the experiences of five civil rights-era rabbis (William Silverman, Randall Falk, Alfred Goodman, Irving Bloom, and Burton Padoll) to highlight their contributions, leadership approaches, struggles, and achievements with a particular emphasis on social justice. As each of the rabbis drew from their understanding of the richness of the Jewish textual canon, the study includes a survey of Biblical, Talmudic, and contemporary Jewish sources that laid the groundwork for their rabbinic activism and which compel rabbis today. The study dramatically highlights those texts as providing applicable strategies with regard to leading a congregation with a “prophetic” voice, knowing …
Human Centeredness: The Foundation For Leadership-As-Practice In Complex Local/Regional Food Networks, Maryann Martinez
Human Centeredness: The Foundation For Leadership-As-Practice In Complex Local/Regional Food Networks, Maryann Martinez
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Our local and regional food systems are predominately modeled on a failed capitalist market-based economy. In the absence of corporate accountability, and/or support on the federal policy level, local and regional leadership and self-organized networks are critical to the scaling across and evolution of a moral and equitable food system. Networked food systems leaders are developing the capacity to solve wicked problems, and spark change. Understanding the values and practices of local food systems leadership that initiate, influence, and support activities is essential to understanding how to foster conditions for local and regional food network growth. My dissertation research is …

Private wells in Ireland and elsewhere have been shown to be prone to microbial contamination with the main suspected sources being practices associated with agriculture and domestic wastewater treatment systems (DWWTS). While the microbial quality of private well water is commonly assessed using faecal indicator bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, such organisms are not usually source-specific, and hence cannot definitively conclude the exact origin of the contamination. This research assessed a range of different chemical contamination fingerprinting techniques (ionic ratios, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, fluorescent whitening compounds, faecal sterol profiles and pharmaceuticals) as to their use to apportion contamination of private …
Parasite And The Ideological Barriers To Emancipatory Politics, Soravis Jayanama
Parasite And The Ideological Barriers To Emancipatory Politics, Soravis Jayanama
Journal of Social Sciences
In this essay, my contention is two-fold. One, Bong Joon-ho’s f ilm Parasite (2019) is not simply about class inequality but more importantly addresses the question “what is (not) to be done?”.To appreciate this point, we have to investigate it alongside Bong’s previous f ilms, especially Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017). Although these three f ilms possess vastly different storylines, they all wrestle with this burning political question from different angles: seizure of state power and revolution (Snowpiercer), “folk politics” (Okja), and neoliberal privatization of social problems (Parasite). They all implicitly demand for better or more concrete visions of systemic transformation. …
