Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: While therapeutic success of the limbal tissue or cell transplantation to treat severe cases of limbal stem cell (LSC) deficiency (LSCD) strongly depends on the percentage of LSCs within the transplanted cells, prospective LSC enrichment has been hampered by the intranuclear localization of the previously reported LSC marker p63. The recent identification of the ATP-binding cassette transporter ABCB5 as a plasma membrane-spanning marker of LSCs that are capable of restoring the cornea and the development of an antibody directed against an extracellular loop of the ABCB5 molecule stimulated us to develop a novel treatment strategy based on the utilization …

Metabolomics And Lipidomics: Expanding The Molecular Landscape Of Exercise Biology, Mehdi R. Belhaj, Nathan G. Lawler, Nolan J. Hoffman

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Dynamic changes in circulating and tissue metabolites and lipids occur in response to exercise-induced cellular and whole-body energy demands to maintain metabolic homeostasis. The metabolome and lipidome in a given biological system provides a molecular snapshot of these rapid and complex metabolic perturbations. The application of metabolomics and lipidomics to map the metabolic responses to an acute bout of aerobic/endurance or resistance exercise has dramatically expanded over the past decade thanks to major analytical advancements, with most exercise-related studies to date focused on analyzing human biofluids and tissues. Experimental and analytical con-siderations, as well as complementary studies using animal model …

Functional Maturation Of Immature Β Cells: A Roadblock For Stem Cell Therapy For Type 1 Diabetes, Zi-Yi Sun, Ting-Yan Yu, Fang-Xu Jiang, Wei Wang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by the specific destruction of pancreatic islet β cells and is characterized as the absolute insufficiency of insulin secretion. Current insulin replacement therapy supplies insulin in a non-physiological way and is associated with devastating complications. Experimental islet transplantation therapy has been proven to restore glucose homeostasis in people with severe T1DM. However, it is restricted by many factors such as severe shortage of donor sources, progressive loss of donor cells, high cost, etc. As pluripotent stem cells have the potential to give rise to all cells including islet β …

Working The Third Space: Reformulating Practice In The Transition From Classroom Teacher To Teacher Educator, Fleur Diamond, Stephanie Wescott, Kristen Molloy Jan 2021

Working The Third Space: Reformulating Practice In The Transition From Classroom Teacher To Teacher Educator, Fleur Diamond, Stephanie Wescott, Kristen Molloy

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The working lives and identities of teacher educators remain an under-researched aspect of teacher education. This paper reports on a collaborative narrative inquiry by three early career teacher educators as they made the transition from classroom practice in schools, to teacher education in a university setting. The authors confronted technical understandings, or ‘official stories’ (Zukas & Malcolm, 2019) of what it means to prepare prospective teachers, derived from contemporary standards-based policies about teacher professionalism. The paper proposes the concept of ‘working the third space’ as a way of framing teacher educators’ efforts to draw upon classroom teaching experience while challenging …

The Great Upheaval: Women And Nation In Postwar Nigeria, Judith A. Byfield Jan 2021

The Great Upheaval: Women And Nation In Postwar Nigeria, Judith A. Byfield

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This social and intellectual history of women’s political activism in postwar Nigeria reveals the importance of gender to the study of nationalism and poses new questions about Nigeria’s colonial past and independent future.

In the years following World War II, the women of Abeokuta, Nigeria, staged a successful tax revolt that led to the formation first of the Abeokuta Women’s Union and then of Nigeria’s first national women’s organization, the Nigerian Women’s Union, in 1949. These organizations became central to a new political vision, a way for women across Nigeria to define their interests, desires, and needs while fulfilling the …

A Museum’S Guide To Queer Inclusivity, Ashtin O. Ashbrook Jan 2021

A Museum’S Guide To Queer Inclusivity, Ashtin O. Ashbrook

Museum Studies Theses

LGBT+ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender, also called queer) people have always existed. The history of queer people has been repressed and destroyed. As culture changes and becomes more accepting of these identities, queer people are living more openly, and history is being well recorded. Museums are institutions that are responsible for representing and perpetuating cultural views, and therefore have a responsibility to include a diverse variety of people. One strategy to normalize queerness is to integrate it into museums. This guide will explore queer inclusion, with an emphasis on transgender inclusion, in all different types of museums. The following …

The Long History Of Feminist Legal Theory, Tracy Thomas Jan 2021

The Long History Of Feminist Legal Theory, Tracy Thomas

Con Law Center Articles and Publications

This chapter challenges the conventional idea that feminist legal theory began in the 1970s. The advent of legal feminism is usually placed in the second wave feminist movement, birthed by the political activism of the women’s liberation movement and nurtured by the intellectual leadership of women scholars newly entering legal academia. However, legal feminism has a much longer history, going back more than a century earlier. While the term “feminist” was not used in the United States until the 1910s, the foundations of feminist legal theory were first conceptualized as early as 1848 and developed over the next one hundred …

Requiem For A Lightweight: How Ncaa Continues To Distort Antitrust Doctrine, Alan J. Meese Jan 2021

Requiem For A Lightweight: How Ncaa Continues To Distort Antitrust Doctrine, Alan J. Meese

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court speaks rarely about the meaning of the Sherman Act. When the Court does speak, its pronouncements have particular resonance and staying power among jurists, scholars, and enforcers. NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma was such a case. There the Court assessed agreements reducing the output and increasing the prices of televised college football games. After announcing that restraints imposed by sports leagues are exempt from per se condemnation, the Court went on to invalidate the challenged agreements under the rule of reason because they produced significant economic harm without offsetting benefits. In so …

Getting Lead Off The Landscape: A Theory And Data-Driven Approach To Increase Non-Lead Ammunition Use Among Hunters In The California Condor Range Of Utah (Usa), Jacob C. Richards, Jordan W. Smith

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The leading cause of mortality in California condors (condors) is lead poisoning, which occurs when condors ingest lead-based ammunition left in carcasses. As a critically endangered species with approximately 100 individuals remaining in the American southwest, increasing the adoption of non-lead ammunition is essential to the recovery of the species. In Utah, the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) uses communication with hunters as the primary tool for increasing the adoption of non-lead ammunition in southwestern Utah. In this research, we use social science theory and data collected from a survey of hunters throughout the region to develop a strategic communication …

While Pacific salmon are economically and culturally important worldwide, Alaska, USA is one of the few remaining places on earth where sustainable management of salmon is possible, even in the face of wide-ranging threats, including overharvesting and the impacts of climate change. A continuing challenge that we face is to understand the ecological processes that result in sustainable salmon populations and report that science to stakeholders in a way that promotes decision-making to avoid the destruction of salmon populations that has occurred in most areas of the lower 48 states. To address this challenge, our studies in the southern Kenai …

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

he Blackfoot Reservoir volcanic field (BRVF), Idaho, USA, is a bimodal volcanic field that has hosted silicic eruptions during at least two episodes, as recently as 58 ka. Using newly collected ground and boat-based gravity data, two large negative anomalies (-16 mGal) are modeled as shallow (< 1  km) intrusions beneath a NE-trending alignment of BRVF rhyolite domes and tuff rings. Given the trade-off between density contrast and model volume, best-fit gravity inversion models yield a total intrusion volume of 50-120 km3; a density contrast of -400 kg m-3 results in two intrusions, each ~9 km x 4.5 km and about 0.5 km thick, with cumulative volume of 100 km3. A network of 340°-360° trending faults lies directly above and on the margins of the mapped gravity anomalies. Most of …

Impact Of Metarhizium Anisopliae And Beauveria Bassiana On Bee Pollinators (Hymenoptera: Apidae), And Modelling Their Performance In Bee Colonies, Evanson Rigan Omuse Jan 2021

Impact Of Metarhizium Anisopliae And Beauveria Bassiana On Bee Pollinators (Hymenoptera: Apidae), And Modelling Their Performance In Bee Colonies, Evanson Rigan Omuse

All Master’s Theses

Insect pollination sustains the biodiversity of 90% of wild plants, and 75% of crop species for food and nutritional security. Chemical pesticides used to manage arthropod pests constitute a key driver to the unprecedented declines of insect pollinators worldwide. Hence, biopesticides based on entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are being promoted as safer alternatives. The effects of EPF on insect pollinators have not been investigated in detail for the application in pollinator-resourced crop systems. Thus, this study screened EPF isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae (ICIPE 7, ICIPE 20,ICIPE 62, ICIPE 69 and ICIPE 78), and Beauveria bassiana (ICIPE 284) for their effect on the …

Comparing Mitochondrial Gene Sequences Of Aedes Aegypti In East Africa To The Global Anthropophilic Strain, Brian Bwanya Edward Jan 2021

Comparing Mitochondrial Gene Sequences Of Aedes Aegypti In East Africa To The Global Anthropophilic Strain, Brian Bwanya Edward

All Master’s Theses

Advances in genotyping methods have shed more light into mosquito genetics and improved our understanding of vector-borne disease transmission cycles. Outside of Africa, Aedes aegypti, the main vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses, prefers humans for a blood meal, resting and breeding in close association with human settlements. However, in its native African ecology, both domestic (Aedes aegypti aegypti) and sylvatic (forest) (Aedes aegypti formosus) lineages occur. Further, the African Ae. aegypti populations have been found to exhibit divergence in typically conserved mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes and traits of epidemiological …

Perfomance Of Exotic Chicken Fed Insect-Based Diets Effect On Laying Capacity, Egg Characteristics And Economic Returns, Esther Khayanga Sumbule

All Master’s Theses

Increasing demand for soybean meal and fishmeal for use in formulating animal feeds has led to increased prices and moreover their availability in future might be limited. Insect rearing can be part of the solution because they take a short period to mature, require small space and fewer resources to start. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of substituting fishmeal (FM)with black soldier fly larvae (BSFLM) at different inclusion levels, as a protein source in exotic chick, grower, and layers diets. The following parameters were measured, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), laying percentage, egg characteristics …

“Lions On The Beach”: Ernest Hemingway And Postcolonial Representations Of Cuba As A ‘Dark Shadow’ Of Spain, Laila Jackson Jan 2021

“Lions On The Beach”: Ernest Hemingway And Postcolonial Representations Of Cuba As A ‘Dark Shadow’ Of Spain, Laila Jackson

ScholarsArchive Data

Hemingway represents both Spain and Cuba in very different lights, despite the similarities inherent in the countries. As a colonial holding of Spain until 1898, and a U.S. holding until 1902, Cuba is an off shoot of Spanish culture, with differences based on the indigenous people conquered in the 1500s. Though unsurprising, it is interesting that both nations drew Hemingway’s attention. For Hemingway, Spain represented this noble beauty, this majestic heaven on earth, even while in the midst of war. When he writes about Spain, Hemingway waxes romantic. However, this attitude isn’t reflected in his writings about Cuba, which focus …

The phenomenon of resilience has long been identified as a key talking point within the realm of overall mental health, but the concept’s specific meaning, qualities, and sources remain somewhat elusive. For those with chronic health conditions, resilience is often identified as essential to coping effectively with significant disruptions to daily activities. The purpose of this study was to better understand the concept of resilience and to determine themes that underlie resilience, specifically within a cancer patient population. This goal was addressed by using a qualitative approach to elicit commonalities among the experiences of cancer patients representing varying types and …

Lived Experience: The Training Of Therapists, Actors & Human Beings, Richard Williams Jan 2021

Lived Experience: The Training Of Therapists, Actors & Human Beings, Richard Williams

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

There is much in common between theater and therapy. Both happen live. Both are explorations of human experience. Both require participants to be emotionally and mentally present. Both are hard to do well (and easy to do poorly). Training to be a clinical psychologist requires hours of coursework, administrative work, supervision, and on the job clinical experience. Training to be a professional theater maker or actor requires hours of rehearsal. The elements of acting are deconstructed during training so that rehearsal consists of voice-work, physical theater, scene study, etcetera. Training to be an actor entails much more practice of the …
