Effects Of Chickpea Flour Replacement On Physical And Sensory Characteristics Of Brownies, Madeline Large Jan 2021

Effects Of Chickpea Flour Replacement On Physical And Sensory Characteristics Of Brownies, Madeline Large

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Due to health concerns, many consumers have started to incorporate nutrient-dense functional foods into their everyday diet. Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) are an important globally consumed legume. They are utilized in foods due to their higher protein quality compared to other types of pulses grown around the world as they contain all the essential amino acids. Another important factor is that it can be used as a supplement for protein for vegetarians and as a grain substitute for consumers who have celiac disease and cannot consume gluten. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of complete …

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia caused by defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes is associated with damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs, such as the eyes, heart, kid-neys, and brain. Diabetes is mainly classified into type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diabetes affects more than 34 million people in the USA (about 1 in 10) and more than 90% of diabetic patients have type 2 diabetes (T2D). Insulin resistance is a main characteristic feature of type 2 diabetes. Skeletal muscle insulin resistance is con-sidered to be the primary defect …

Targeted Combination Therapy Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Ketki Bhise Jan 2021

Targeted Combination Therapy Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Ketki Bhise

Wayne State University Dissertations

TARGETED COMBINATION THERAPY OF TRIPLE-NEGATIVE BREAST CANCERby KETKI BHISE May 2021 Advisor: Dr. Arun Iyer Major: Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) accounts for 10-20% of the total breast carcinoma cases. There is no FDA-approved targeted therapy for TNBC due to lack estrogen, progesterone and HER-2. We have identified the role of a hypoxia biomarker, carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) in proliferation and metastasis of TNBC. Based on this observation, we have developed CAIX-targeted Doxorubicin (Dox) prodrug, abbreviated as DoxAtz. To improve the delivery of DoxAtz to the tumor, we developed long circulating liposomes (LipoDoxAtz) and …

Deciphering The Effects Of Serelaxin On The Cardiorenal Axis In Acute Heart Failure- A Canine Model, Abhinav Chinna Krishnan Jan 2021

Deciphering The Effects Of Serelaxin On The Cardiorenal Axis In Acute Heart Failure- A Canine Model, Abhinav Chinna Krishnan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Acute heart failure (HF) with underlying ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular associated death in the United States. Acute HF pathophysiology involves a complex interplay of neurohormonal activation, increased cardiac ventricular pressures (fluid overload), vasoconstriction, impaired renal function, and progressive end-organ failure. Serelaxin (SLX), a recombinant form of the human hormone relaxin 2, is a vasodilator and an ideal pharmacological agent to treat acute HF. Though SLX was associated with positive preliminary outcome data for acute HF it however failed to provide benefit during clinical trials. Greater understanding of cardiac and renal parameters may elucidate …

Modulation Of Pharyngeal Health In Bacterial Diet-Dependent Survival, Deniz Sifoglu Jan 2021

Modulation Of Pharyngeal Health In Bacterial Diet-Dependent Survival, Deniz Sifoglu

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

MODULATION OF PHARYNGEAL HEALTH IN BACTERIAL DIET-DEPENDENT SURVIVAL

by

DENIZ SIFOGLU

August 2021

Advisor: Dr. Joy Alcedo Major: Biological Sciences Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Both diet and bacterial microbiome modulate insulin signaling, which regulates key physiological processes that are important for survival. However, the mechanisms through which diet and the microbiome modulate insulin signaling remain unclear. To understand these mechanisms, I turned to the nematode worm C. elegans, whose diet consists of different types of bacteria. Like humans and other animals, C. elegans has to modulate its responses to its diet and to bacteria to optimize its survival. Because …

Hypochlorite-Mediated Oxidation Of Dopamine: Implications In Parkinson’S Disease And Manganism, Praneet Kaur Marwah Jan 2021

Hypochlorite-Mediated Oxidation Of Dopamine: Implications In Parkinson’S Disease And Manganism, Praneet Kaur Marwah

Wayne State University Dissertations

Both Parkinson’s disease and manganism (a condition caused by chronic exposure to excessive levels of manganese) affect the extrapyramidal system of the brain, disrupt dopaminergic signaling and cause similar motor symptoms. While there is no physiological explanation for the susceptibility of dopamine-rich regions of the brain in both disorders, dopamine itself is a likely candidate. Dopamine can undergo both enzymatic and spontaneous oxidation, and the principal product of dopamine oxidation in vivo is cysteinyl dopamine. We demonstrate here that hypochlorous acid, which is produced in the brain by the enzyme myeloperoxidase, converts cysteinyl dopamine into a neurotoxic dihydrobenzothiazine, DHBT-1, that …

Significant Findings: Glacier County ranks lowest of any county in Montana in combined health outcomes (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2018). The poverty rate there in the Blackfoot Nation is close to 50% (Montana State University, 2017). Unemployment rates are much higher than reported due to the fact that only individuals actively seeking …

Therapeutic Dual-Targeting Of Cytosolic And Mitochondrial One-Carbon Metabolism, Aamod Sanjeev Dekhne Jan 2021

Therapeutic Dual-Targeting Of Cytosolic And Mitochondrial One-Carbon Metabolism, Aamod Sanjeev Dekhne

Wayne State University Dissertations

One-carbon metabolism (1CM) is compartmentalized in the mitochondria and cytosol and generates a host of metabolites critical to tumor propagation. Although drug-targeting of cytosolic 1CM remains a clinically-relevant mainstay, development of clinically-useful agents targeting mitochondrial 1CM remains elusive. Of particular pharmacological interest is the mitochondrial 1CM enzyme, serine hydroxymethyltransferase2 (SHMT2). SHMT2 expression correlates with the oncogenic phenotype in lung, colon, breast, glioma, and liver cancer and, overall, is the fifth-most differentially expressed metabolic enzyme in cancer cell versus normal tissue. Despite the unequivocal oncogenic importance and therapeutic potential of SHMT2, there are no clinically relevant (i.e. active in vivo) inhibitors …

Against Whitewashing: The Recent History Of Anti-Racist Action In The British Archives Sector, Alicia Chilcott, Kirsty Fife, James Lowry, Jenny Moran, Arike Oke, Anna Sexton, Jass Thethi

Publications and Research

This article is an account of recent activity in the U.K. archives sector against white supremacy which is written by a number of people active in the work. Through our work, we are aware of previous initiatives in this area, but written sources about the history of this work are patchy at best. This account offers a description of recent activity so that it is "on record". We recognise that a historical account of previous efforts would be valuable, but that is not our objective here. This article offers a statement of the problem of white supremacy in the U.K.’s …

Why Do Antibiotics Exist?, Fabrizio Spagnolo, Monica Trujillo, John J. Dennehy Jan 2021

Why Do Antibiotics Exist?, Fabrizio Spagnolo, Monica Trujillo, John J. Dennehy

Publications and Research

In the struggle with antibiotic resistance, we are losing. There is now a serious threat of moving into a postantibiotic world. High levels of resistance, in terms of both frequency and strength, have evolved against all clinically approved antibiotics worldwide. The usable life span of new clinically approved antibiotics is typically less than a decade before resistance reaches frequencies so high as to require only guarded usage. However, microbes have produced antibiotics for millennia without resistance becoming an existential issue. If resistance is the inevitable consequence of antibiotic usage, as has been the human experience, why has it not become …

Potential Solar Replacement Of Hydroelectricity To Reopen Rivers: Maine As A Case Example, Shailesh Sharma, John Waldman Jan 2021

Potential Solar Replacement Of Hydroelectricity To Reopen Rivers: Maine As A Case Example, Shailesh Sharma, John Waldman

Publications and Research

Hydroelectricity provides 6% of U.S. electrical power needs, but hydro-dams also cause environmental harm, including the retardation or complete blockage of spawning runs of anadromous fishes. To facilitate fish movements, engineered-fishways have long been used but many have performed poorly. Dam-removal is the most effective way of restoring dwindling migratory fish populations by allowing unrestricted pathways to their spawning areas and for the downstream migrations of post-spawning adults and juveniles. However, removals of hydro-dams result in a loss of electricity production. For the replacement of energy foregone from hydro-dam removals, various alternative energy installations are now feasible. We present one-to-one …

Understanding The New Wealthy: Ideologies, Consumption Patterns, And Organizational Strategies For A New Generation Of High-Net Worth Individuals, Ana Brant Jan 2021

Understanding The New Wealthy: Ideologies, Consumption Patterns, And Organizational Strategies For A New Generation Of High-Net Worth Individuals, Ana Brant

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that the Ultra High-Net Worth (UHNWI) belong to the wealthiest, most powerful, and influential group of consumers in the society, and nearly 70% created wealth on their own, current marketing approaches fail to consider what drives consumption behavior of this group of consumers and how can brands maximize their socio-economic impact. Across two studies, I develop a model that guides theory and practice regarding this consumer group. The first part of the first study deployed netnography and grounded theory to understand the ideologies of 30 self-made UHNWI derived from self-presentation on 3,393 Instagram posts. To ensure self-made …

A Systematic Review Of The Literature On Post-Traumatic Growth In Police Officers After Exposure To Potentially Traumatic Events, Michael Norfleet

Theses and Dissertations

As police departments and officers across the world take on the task of reducing crime and enhancing public safety, their jobs entail the potential of exposure to events that may be experienced as traumatic. In contrast to the larger literature on negative outcomes of potentially traumatic events (PTEs), there is limited knowledge on the potential for post-traumatic growth (PTG) and how clinicians can promote it, generally and in police officers (Westphal & Bonanno, 2007). Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996), “coined the term posttraumatic growth to describe the experience of positive changes that occur as a result of the struggle with major …

The Validity Of Transracialism, Samantha Nichole Priest Jan 2021

The Validity Of Transracialism, Samantha Nichole Priest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this article, the idea that transracialism could be a valid identity is considered. Standpoint epistemology presents the strongest case against transracialism as a valid identity because, according to Collin’s, racial groups have a special sense of a shared history. However, arguments for race as a social construction show how transracialism could function the same way we ordinarily feel like gender functions in our society. The violent disapproval of transracialism highlights both that ordinary usage is being challenged and that it is changing. Ultimately, narrative views of personal identity, like those suggested by Aslidair MacIntyre, and the ordinary function of …

Development Or Detriment? The World Bank And Economic Disincentives To Water Conservation: Jordan In The 1960s And 1970s, William Chase Young Jan 2021

Development Or Detriment? The World Bank And Economic Disincentives To Water Conservation: Jordan In The 1960s And 1970s, William Chase Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the impact of World Bank development policies on water shortagesin the Middle East and North Africa. Analyzing primary sources from the World Bank Group Archives, I contend that in funding water development projects in the 1960s and 1970s the World Bank and its subsidiaries, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association, created economic disincentives to water conservation. These disincentives likely made authorities unable to effectively respond to water shortages that developed in the latter half of the 20th century. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is used as a case study, which I …

Design And Synthesis Of Salvinorin-Based Compounds For The Opioid Receptors., Nicholas S. Akins Jan 2021

Design And Synthesis Of Salvinorin-Based Compounds For The Opioid Receptors., Nicholas S. Akins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Opioid receptors (OR) are expressed throughout both the peripheral and central nervous system and play crucial roles in the modulation of antinociception, addiction, anxiety, and depression. Salvinorin A, the main isolate of the hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum, is one of the most potent naturally occurring kappa opioid receptor agonists. Salvinorin A possesses beneficial effects as a therapeutic in a variety of CNS disorders, but due to its strong hallucinating, anxiogenic effects, and short half-life(t1/2), it has never advanced to clinical trials. Instead, salvinorin A has been used as an important prototype for the development of related drug candidates. Our initial …

The Black Petromodernism Of Zora Neale Hurston: Energy, Race, And Mobility, Stuart Mullet Jan 2021

The Black Petromodernism Of Zora Neale Hurston: Energy, Race, And Mobility, Stuart Mullet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis situates Zora Neale Hurston and the folk communities in her oeuvre within the context of modernity’s dependencies on fossil fuels. Such a disciplinary context provides an energy footing for our understandings of African American migrations in the twentieth century—which radically transformed the nation on multiple levels—and it illuminates the communal values that undergird Black approaches to petromodern forms of mobility. Furthermore, by engaging the Black spaces of the South, my argument begins filling a gap in the energy humanities. Few scholars in this field engage deeply those populations and regions that disproportionately experience the underbelly of petromodernity and …

An In-Depth Approach For Functional Oligosaccharide Analysis, Hao Liu Jan 2021

An In-Depth Approach For Functional Oligosaccharide Analysis, Hao Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heparin and heparan sulfate (Hp/HS) are linear complex glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are involved in diverse biological processes. Although Hp/HS GAGs influence numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes, their high degree of size polydispersity and sequence microheterogeneity make structure-function characterization challenging. In addition, it is hard to understand the structures that underlie any of the various functions with MS, because of the lability of the sulfate group during tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) analysis. The work presented here describes an in-depth approach for functional oligosaccharide characterization including chemical derivatization of Hp to inhibit COVID-19 infection, multi-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC) fractionation method, chemical derivatization …

Midwifery And Medicine In Britain: A Comparative View Of Midwifery And Childbearing In Scotland And England, 1650-1780, Summer Smith Jan 2021

Midwifery And Medicine In Britain: A Comparative View Of Midwifery And Childbearing In Scotland And England, 1650-1780, Summer Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I contend the female midwives and childbearing women did not passively accept the alteration of the experience of birth and the ideology surrounding it in eighteenth-century Britain. While the imposition of the man-midwife and the reframing of birth as a disease to be cured in some ways forced childbearing to shift to a medicalized event, many practices persisted from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, illustrating a vein of consistency in a seemingly tumultuous period. Furthermore, the changes that did take root were not solely the purview of the male medical community, but were influenced by women …

Development And Characterization Of Albuterol Sulfate Loaded Transdermal Patches With Hme Coupled Fdm 3d Printing, Bhavana Chivukula Jan 2021

Development And Characterization Of Albuterol Sulfate Loaded Transdermal Patches With Hme Coupled Fdm 3d Printing, Bhavana Chivukula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Albuterol sulfate is a short-acting selective Beta 2 Adrenergic agonist. It is used to treat and prevent bronchospasm associated with asthma, bronchitis, and other breathing disorders. It is known to show extensive first pass metabolism and it requires frequent dosing which makes it difficult for patients to comply. To avoid these problems, transdermal route of delivery of Salbutamol was explored. Traditional methods of preparation of transdermal drug delivery systems involve the use of solvents and have multiple processing steps. To avoid the usage of solvents and decrease the processing steps, HME Coupled FDM 3D printing can be used. Different polymers …

Designing A State Court Small Claims Odr System: Hitting A Moving Target In New York During A Pandemic, David Allen Larson Jan 2021

Designing A State Court Small Claims Odr System: Hitting A Moving Target In New York During A Pandemic, David Allen Larson

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

When I began helping the New York State Unified Court System design a pilot online dispute resolution ("ODR") system back in October 2016, I never imagined more than four years would pass before a system was implemented. One reason our journey was so long is because our target kept moving. After completing a detailed credit card debt collection ODR platform, we had to change direction before implementation and focus instead on small claims cases. Then like the rest of the world, we suddenly had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it took longer than anticipated, we achieved our goal …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

BACKGROUND: Lethal removal of invasive species, such as wild pigs (Sus scrofa), is often the most efficient approach for reducing their negative impacts. Wild pigs are one of the most widespread and destructive invasive mammals in the USA. Lethal management techniques are a key approach for wild pigs and can alter wild pig spatial behavior, but it is unclear how wild pigs respond to the most common removal technique, trapping. We investigated the spatial behavior of wild pigs following intensive removal of conspecifics via trapping at three sites within the Savannah River Site, SC, USA. We evaluated changes in …

Machiavelli On Liberty, John Patrick Coby Jan 2021

Machiavelli On Liberty, John Patrick Coby

Government: Faculty Publications

As an attribute of the people, liberty is self-protection from the abuse of power. It further is republican government, the rule of law, and civic independence, or it is the result of the same. Meanwhile, intelligence is an attribute of the great, and oppression is the goal of their ambitions. Machiavelli designates the people as the guardian of liberty. He appears to be their champion and the champion of republican constitutionalism. But Machiavelli is also an inveterate admirer of expansionist Rome, designating it the republic most worthy for imitation by moderns. He takes this position despite admitting that Rome destroyed …
