Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Trajectories For Appropriating Engineering Design–Based Science Teaching, Brenda Capobianco, Jeffrey Radloff
Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Trajectories For Appropriating Engineering Design–Based Science Teaching, Brenda Capobianco, Jeffrey Radloff
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Learning to teach science using engineering design is a complex endeavor for elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). This entails helping PSTs understand students as sense makers and recognizing ways to notice, respond, and leverage their students’ ideas throughout the design process. In this study, we follow a cohort of elementary PSTs through a 16-week method course including a related field experience in a local STEM intermediate school (grades 5–6) to better understand how they organize, plan for, and attempt to integrate engineering design–based science teaching. Data were gathered through interviews, lesson plans, reflective narratives, and classroom observations. Data were analyzed using …
Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 Pathway Due To Preeclampsia: A Review, Firdous Ali
Role Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 Pathway Due To Preeclampsia: A Review, Firdous Ali
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that is characterized mainly by hypertension in the mother. The exact pathogenesis of preeclampsia is unknown, although the disease is attributed to a number of factors such as angiogenic factor levels and endothelial dysfunction. Presently, the control program for the disease involves the delivery of the fetus and the placenta. There is a need to develop novel therapies that would control preeclampsia from the moment it is diagnosed to minimize the effects on the mother and child. VEGF is a protein involved in the pathogenesis of the condition. The defect in one of its receptors, …
Synthesis Of Novel Porphyrin Derived Molecules For The Study Of Self Assembly And Photophysical Properties, Alex Nguyen
Synthesis Of Novel Porphyrin Derived Molecules For The Study Of Self Assembly And Photophysical Properties, Alex Nguyen
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The photochemical capabilities of self-assembling porphyrins holds the potential to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. Porphyrins have the ability to absorb solar energy to excite its electrons within the highly conjugated π system of the porphyrin ring. The excited electron can then be donated thus creating a charge separated state between the porphyrin donor and the electron acceptor. With self-assembly of porphyrin monomers into a supramolecular structure, this charge separated state can be emphasized and prolonged so the energy potential generated can be harvested. Here, the synthesis of porphyrin derivatives substituted with biologically found molecules is described. The lysine …

Sattvic Diet And All-Cause Mortality: A Systematic Review, Nrsimha Ghosh
Sattvic Diet And All-Cause Mortality: A Systematic Review, Nrsimha Ghosh
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
A sattvic diet is a diet characterized by a moderate intake of food that is not reheated and is only eaten twice daily. It is mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Srimad Bhagavad-gita. This paper aims to compare foods and habits considered to be sattvic with those considered to be rajasic and tamasic (those outside of the diet) in regard to all-cause mortality. Because of the many variable factors of all three diets, specific words mentioned in the texts were used to search Google Scholar, Agricola, Medline, Food Science Source, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library Online, PubMed, Health …
Development Of Phagotrophic Algae-Based Process For Conversion Of Waste Organics To Algae Lipids As Potential Feedstock For Biofuel, Hannah Nelson
Development Of Phagotrophic Algae-Based Process For Conversion Of Waste Organics To Algae Lipids As Potential Feedstock For Biofuel, Hannah Nelson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Interest in sustainable feedstock for biofuel has encouraged research on the production of phagotrophic algae from bacteria using a two-staged continuous-flow system. Bacteria cultures were fed the content of a waste stream from The J.M. Smuckers Company containing high concentrations of sugar. In the design, the bacteria effluent overflowed into the algae tank which was kept at a set volume. Several methods were developed to assist in maintaining the system at steady state and minimize the impact from contaminants. A rigorous cleaning protocol was implemented for both tanks, effectively eliminating protozoa from the bacteria system. The protozoa were decreased in …

Zombies In The Library Stacks, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren
Zombies In The Library Stacks, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren
Dartmouth Library Staff Publications
This chapter examines "the stacks" as a "zombie category" that retains the power to shape understanding despite being outmoded. We analyze three ways of thinking about "the stacks" that sustain digital humanities: first, the physical library stacks that are part of the information architecture that arranges scholarship; second, the technology stack of globalized computing that distributes scholarship; and finally, the social stack of human relationships that make everything possible. Each stack reveals something different about the digital humanities and the patterns of labor embedded within it. Drawing on the sociological lessons of the zombie category, we aim to disaggregate the …

The Role Of Dynamic Wetting Behavior During Bubble Growth And Departure From A Solid Surface, Taylor P. Allred, Justin A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
The Role Of Dynamic Wetting Behavior During Bubble Growth And Departure From A Solid Surface, Taylor P. Allred, Justin A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Surface wettability is known to have a major influence on the ebullition characteristics of a bubble growing from a solid surface. Yet, simplistic static characterization of the wetting behavior is still relied upon to indicate performance characteristics during boiling. In this study, a theoretical framework is developed for the wetting and dewetting processes occurring during bubble growth based upon the dynamic contact angles. This framework is incorporated into adiabatic volume-of-fluid simulations to capture the influence of the surface wettability on contact line and contact angle dynamics during bubble growth and departure. The simulations span a large range of dynamic wetting …
Pharmacological Manipulation Of Nmda Receptor Activation And Synaptic Norepinephrine Levels: Effects On Sustained Attention In Male Rats, Zach V. Redding
Pharmacological Manipulation Of Nmda Receptor Activation And Synaptic Norepinephrine Levels: Effects On Sustained Attention In Male Rats, Zach V. Redding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Impaired attention is common in many neurological disorders. Normal attention promotes the selective processing of important sensory information. This selective processing relies on neurotransmitters, like glutamate, and neuromodulators, like norepinephrine, acting in frontal, parietal, and visual cortices. We tested treatments targeting the glutamatergic and noradrenergic systems using a rat model of attentional lapses.Rats were trained to respond quickly to stimuli in a two-choice reaction time task (2CRTT). Response times were split into initiation time (IT) and movement time (MT). Performance measures were derived from IT and MT distributions. IT mode represents sensorimotor processing speed when rats are attentive. IT deviation …
Absurdity Is A Distinct Aesthetic Category, Sarah Jean Szopinski
Absurdity Is A Distinct Aesthetic Category, Sarah Jean Szopinski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Absurdity is the sudden discomfort caused by direct awareness of your being consciousand your relation to reality. Camus’ absurdist philosophy refers to the conflict between the human desire for inherent meaning in reality and the incomprehensible and irrational nature of the universe. Facing absurdity requires confronting the absurd feeling through introspective awareness of this tension. Otherwise, you are overcome by it, succumbing to a lack of mindfulness and avoidance of the confrontation. Absurdity, especially in its aesthetic dimension, has not received the sustained attention it deserves. In this paper, I argue that due to the sustained relevance of the absurd …

In late spring of 1968, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) launched a nationwide demonstration known as the Poor People’s Campaign in an effort to overcome poverty. Nine caravans representing people from around the country converged in the Capitol to petition Congress for programs that would broaden opportunities for poor Americans. This work examines the Mississippi contingent of the campaign, the Mule Train caravan, that consisted of roughly 150 people who traveled in 15 covered wagons pulled by about 40 mules. The Mule Train left Marks, Mississippi on May 13 and arrived in Washington, D.C. in time for a June …
The Meat Of The Gothic: Animality And Social Justice In United States Fiction And Film Of The Twenty-First Century, Amber Hodge
The Meat Of The Gothic: Animality And Social Justice In United States Fiction And Film Of The Twenty-First Century, Amber Hodge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Meat of the Gothic: Animality and Social Justice in United States Fiction and Film of the Twenty-First Century— situates twenty-first century US gothic narratives in relation to animal studies, even as it illuminates how these narratives interrogate the effects of historic and ongoing global systems of human oppression: slavery, imperialism, and capitalism. Instead of reacting to bias by asserting a claim to a humanity perpetually imbricated in divisions of class, race, and gender, present-day authors and filmmakers create characters who form communities that include nonhuman actors as a means of generating empowerment and critique. My approach to these narratives …

After this survey, the artifacts were classified into two categories: chronological and functional. From this analysis, a series of patterns were …
Do Bears Prefer The Weak And The Downtrodden? The Effects Of The 52-Week Low And Financial Strength On Short-Seller Behavior, Christopher Alan Miller
Do Bears Prefer The Weak And The Downtrodden? The Effects Of The 52-Week Low And Financial Strength On Short-Seller Behavior, Christopher Alan Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the effects of a company’s financial strength on short-seller behavior around a non-information-producing event. The distance of a stock price to its 52-week high or low does not provide fundamental information, but the price extremes serve as salient price points upon which investors anchor their expectations of future stock performance. Using a large sample of daily short sales data, I investigated the effects of both the proximity to the 52-week low and the financial strength of the underlying company on short-seller behavior. I found that short-selling volume increases as the price nears its 52-week low and that …

Because magnetic resonance (MR) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning sessions last long durations, motion blur during scanning constitutes a problem for clinical interpretation. To counteract this, motion-correction algorithms have been developed to reduce smearing between scan slices of MRI, but these algorithms are not commonplace for PET. This feasibility study determined if applying MRI motion-correction algorithms to simultaneously acquired PET data improved PET signal clarity in specific brain regions. Seven subjects received increasing levels of PET tracers while undergoing two separate simultaneous PET/MRI scans. We modified existing fMRI algorithms to apply them to the accompanying PET data. We hypothesized …

Minimally Invasive Repair Of Elongated Chordae Tendineae In The Mitral Valve, Walid Abuhashim, Diana Albaba, Austin Ghiates, Rebecca Leiter, Mary Robakowski
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In the United States, about 4 million people have been estimated to suffer from severe mitral valve regurgitation [5]. Due to the high risks involved, about half of those patients are ineligible for surgery to repair the valve, because of their poor health [6]. Elongation of the chordae tendineae has been found to be one of the significant causes of regurgitation. To address this, the team has developed a device called “Chord Fastener”, which will restore proper function to the valve via shortening of the chordae tendineae [1]. Via this shortening mechanism, the device will reduce mitral valve regurgitation and …
Modeling Of Excitation In Skeletal Muscle, Sabrina Kinzie Metzger
Modeling Of Excitation In Skeletal Muscle, Sabrina Kinzie Metzger
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Recent experimental findings in the Rich lab suggest there are important gaps in our understanding of muscle excitability in various disease states. To generate and test hypotheses as well as to determine whether our current understanding of various aspects of muscle excitation can fully explain experimental findings, an accurate model of muscle excitation was needed. Previous studies have modeled excitation of muscle, but in each case, important aspects were omitted. One reason for this is that little effort has been made to accurately simulate muscle action potentials. In this thesis I present progress made towards generation of a model of …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Existing facial recognition software relies heavily on using neural networks to extract key facial features to accurately classify known individuals. Some of these key features include the shape, size, and distance between an individual’s eyes, nose, and mouth. When these key features cannot be extracted due to facial coverings, existing applications become inaccurate and unreliable. The accuracy and reliability of these technologies are growing concerns as the facial recognition market continues to grow at an exponential rate. In this thesis, we have developed a web-based application service that is able to take in a partially covered face image and generate …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Excess loading of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a serious global problem and has numerous negative impacts on water quality of aquatic ecosystems including eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and hypoxia. Anthropogenic activities (such as the Haber-Bosch process, burning of fossil fuels, sewage treatment, and manure reuse) have led to excess N loading to aquatic systems. Sediment N dynamics were examined from Oct 2019 – Oct 2020 in an agricultural settling pond connected to a constructed wetland adjacent to an agricultural field. Intact sediment cores were amended with 15N for continuous-flow incubations to measure denitrification and N fixation rates, as …

Increasing incidence of chronic diseases in the 21st century has emphasized the importance of developing crops with enhanced nutritional value. Plant-based diets are associated with reduced incidence of many chronic diseases. The growing population and increased food demand have prioritized the development of high-yielding commercial crop varieties at the expense of natural flavors as well as health-benefiting compounds including polyphenols. Flavonoids are a large subfamily of polyphenols abundant in the plant kingdom with known health-promoting effects, making them a promising trait to be re-introduced into elite lines. Given the vast array of flavonoids and the complexity of plant food metabolome …

The primary objective of this research project was to gain a better understanding of surface characteristics to produce a long-lasting superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic surface. In other words, when will a droplet of water remain on top of a featured surface and when does the transition occur to water filling the grooves of the surface? This research focused on how to best fabricate porous structures that would stay completely dry at all times by preventing the liquid from penetrating. In particular, we followed the behaviors of water droplets placed on top of 3-D printed featured surfaces with various geometries and surface …
