A 35-year-old female without any history of medical or psychiatric illness. One month prior to presenting to our clinic, she had intermittent headaches, night sweats, and muscle pain that went unnoticed by her. A week later, the patient developed agitation and behavioral changes. The patient was admitted through emergency room (ER) to the psychiatry unit for 3 days. During a detailed interview in the Neurology Clinic 10 days post discharge, she described the previously mentioned symptoms. Her cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed leukocytosis, with normal protein and glucose, and positive brucella titers in blood. She received antibiotics for neurobrucellosis with frequent …

Enhancing Learners’ Reading Comprehension Skills Using Multimodality In A Form Two Classroom In A Public Secondary School In Taita Taveta County: An Action Research., Lilian Mandilla

Master of Education

In the recent past, rapid technological advancements coupled with the increasing learner diversity as a result of social, economic, political, and cultural factors have completely altered the meaning process. The use of multiple representations of educational content would therefore, appropriate these learner differences and the multiplicity of text. A considerable body of knowledge indicates that multimodality provides affordance to multiple means of representation, expression, perception, and engagement thus promoting active learning. Numerous studies in the English language continue to indicate that multimodality is used in the teaching and learning of varied aspects of the English language. Based on other studies …

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho Jan 2021

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho

Anthropology ETDs

In Iberia, potentially the last place where Neanderthals survived, the demographic breakdown of small, loosely connected populations seems to have been a significant driver their demise. Human responses to the climatic fluctuations of the Late Pleistocene, particularly Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, could be an explanation for the decreases in Neanderthal population size during this time; it may be that habitat fragmentation and environmental instability contributed to a demographic breakdown, resulting in small, secluded Neanderthal populations that remained for some time in refugia, even after the arrival of anatomically modern humans in Europe some 40,000 years ago. In this dissertation, …

American Imperialism In Hawai’I: How The United States Illegally Usurped A Sovereign Nation And Got Away With It, Noelani Nasser Jan 2021

American Imperialism In Hawai’I: How The United States Illegally Usurped A Sovereign Nation And Got Away With It, Noelani Nasser

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In 1778, England’s Captain Cook first landed on the Hawaiian Islands. Since then, the Native Hawaiians have struggled to maintain their indigenous identity as distinct from the outside world and indigenous to Hawai’i. In the one thousand years preceding this early invasion, Native Hawaiians established unique political structures and cultural identities that were not present in England or the newly independent United States. Following the United States’ overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the United States quickly enacted legislation that severely impacted the Native Hawaiians. This paper will discuss historical events in Hawai’i from 1778 to the twenty-first century …

The 1950s: The Ironies Of American Power, Andrew Finstuen Jan 2021

The 1950s: The Ironies Of American Power, Andrew Finstuen

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the 1950s, Reinhold Niebuhr advanced a theology of history rooted in his theology of the Cross. From that vantage point, he challenged conventional, dualistic interpretations of the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and America’s post-Second World War economic and technological prominence. While he favoured democracy over communism, African American rights over segregation, and abundance over scarcity, he rejected what he thought of as the human pretension to simplify such complex historical phenomena by appeals to American goodness. Instead Niebuhr saw the logic of the Cross as the surest route for navigating the confusion and ironies of history while …

The Global Issue Of Immigration: A Focus On Illegal Immigrants For U.S. Agriculture, Refugee Immigrants For Germany’S Trade And The Climate-Induced Diaspora From Least Developed Countries, Yunzhe Zhu Jan 2021

The Global Issue Of Immigration: A Focus On Illegal Immigrants For U.S. Agriculture, Refugee Immigrants For Germany’S Trade And The Climate-Induced Diaspora From Least Developed Countries, Yunzhe Zhu

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Nowadays, the large scale of migratory movements caused by violence, poverty or climate change have made topics related to this worldwide diaspora a vanguard of research on international development. For one thing, the so-called “caravan migrants” that traveled from Central America in search for a better life in the U.S. have been blocked at the U.S.-Mexico border while U.S. agricultural sectors that are labor-intensive, such as the sectors of fruits and vegetables where most illegal immigrant farmworkers are hired, have been suffering from the shortage of farm labors for years. Such a situation calls for a development of U.S. immigration …

Algae-Based Beneficial Re-Use Of Carbon Emissions Using A Novel Photobioreactor: A Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Analysis, Michael H. Wilson, Aubrey Shea, John Groppo, Czarena Crofcheck, David Quiroz, Jason C. Quinn, Mark Crocker

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

Despite the many advantages of microalgae, the feasibility of large-scale cultivation requires significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to enable high growth rates. A synergistic union typically proposed for the supply of CO2 is the coupling of algal cultivation with emissions from power plants. This study investigates the sustainability of a novel microalgae platform coupled with coal-based flue gas. The proposed system consists of a novel photobioreactor (PBR) for the production of biomass followed by a two-stage dewatering process. A systems model, which quantifies the CO2 and energy consumption of the proposed system, was developed, and the minimum biomass selling …

How Does Occupational Licensing Affect Entry Into The Medical Field? An Examination Of Emts, Aaron Yelowitz, Samuel J. Ingram Jan 2021

How Does Occupational Licensing Affect Entry Into The Medical Field? An Examination Of Emts, Aaron Yelowitz, Samuel J. Ingram

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to temporary suspensions of many occupational licensing laws, especially for health care professionals, in an effort to manage surges in health care demand. The crisis highlights more general concerns about occupational licensing laws, yet convincing empirical evidence on the degree to which such laws have inhibited entry into health care professions is scarce because most studies must rely on cross-sectional variation to identify such effects. In this study, we indirectly examine how occupational licensing affects the choice to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by exploiting the demand-side shock from the Affordable Care Act (ACA). …

New Jersey Center for Water Science & Technology Reports

This report of the NJ Science Advisory Board Ecological Processes Standing Committee (EPSC) addresses charge questions focused on researching how the NJ Department of Environmental Protection might address impacts to vernal habitats (defined in state regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:7A1.3) through effective mitigation. Vernal habitats are valuable to a variety of species of wildlife, particularly as breeding locations for amphibians such as frogs and salamanders in some cases have suffered population declines statewide and nationwide.

Gardening The Gilded Age: Creating The Landscape Of The Future, Jackie L. Perkins Jan 2021

Gardening The Gilded Age: Creating The Landscape Of The Future, Jackie L. Perkins

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The Gilded Age was a time of rapid change in the United States' history. In contrast to the extensive literature regarding wilderness and the founding of environmental organizations during the period, relatively little has been written about the gardens of private residences and the impact these gardens have had on today's environment. These gardens, and the individuals who designed and provided for them, were at the forefront of the introduction of many new and exotic plants to the American landscape. This thesis explores two built environments, North Carolina's Biltmore Estate and the Barker Mansion in Indiana, and how these environments …

Altered Skeletal Muscle Excitation-Contraction Coupling In The R6/2 Transgenic Mouse Model For Huntington's Disease, Daniel R. Miranda Jan 2021

Altered Skeletal Muscle Excitation-Contraction Coupling In The R6/2 Transgenic Mouse Model For Huntington's Disease, Daniel R. Miranda

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Huntington’s disease (HD) has classically been categorized as a neurodegenerative disorder. However, the expression of the disease-causing mutated huntingtin gene in skeletal muscle may contribute to the symptoms of HD, namely those that involve involuntary muscle contraction. In the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD, we previously observed ion channel defects that could contribute to involuntary muscle contraction. Here, in R6/2 muscle we investigated the consequence of these ion channel defects on action potentials (APs), the first step in excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. We found that the ion channel defects were associated with depolarizing the baseline membrane potential during AP trains. …

Pistore Panem Petimus: Specialization In The Late-Roman Baking Industry, Jared Benton Jan 2021

Pistore Panem Petimus: Specialization In The Late-Roman Baking Industry, Jared Benton

Art Faculty Publications

The traditional Roman baker (pistor) is typically thought of as having been horizontally specialized; that is to say he or she performed all the tasks involved in converting raw materials (grain, salt, and water) into bread. This means that they were, in early modern terminology, both millers and bakers. The two professions are generally thought to have vertically specialized within the industry sometime at the end of antiquity. Previously, scholarship has only casually treated this instance of specialization and for the most part it is thought to have been driven by technological innovation, specifically the watermill, which took milling out …

This report gives a phase-by-phase summary of the significant discoveries from the 2018 excavation season, highlighting the architectural development of the building as well as evidence for the various activities that took place there over the course of its occupation.

Incorporation Of Feeding Functional Group Information Informs Explanatory Patterns Of Long-Term Population Changes In Fish Assemblages, Jason C. Doll, Stephen J. Jacquemin Jan 2021

Incorporation Of Feeding Functional Group Information Informs Explanatory Patterns Of Long-Term Population Changes In Fish Assemblages, Jason C. Doll, Stephen J. Jacquemin

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to evaluate long term trends of fish taxa in southern Lake Michigan while incorporating their functional roles to improve our understanding of ecosystem level changes that have occurred in the system over time. The approach used here highlighted the ease of incorporating ecological mechanisms into population models so researchers can take full advantage of available long-term ecosystem information. Long term studies of fish assemblages can be used to inform changes in community structure resulting from perturbations to aquatic systems and understanding these changes in fish assemblages can be better contextualized by grouping species according …

Tracking The Development Of Communication In Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Megan Bahns Jan 2021

Tracking The Development Of Communication In Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Megan Bahns

Undergraduate Research Journal

Compared to their typically developing (TD) peers, most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) develop language skills later and at slower rates. Previous research has found that verbal input shapes the linguistic development of young TD children and children at risk for developmental delays. One area that is not well understood is whether certain aspects of communication (i.e., rate of verbal output, rate of gestures) of the caretaker play a role in how language is developed in children with ASD over time. The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic behavior of the caretaker (i.e., the mother) when …

The Characterization Of The Function(S) Of Crag In Basement Membrane Polarity, Hemin Pankajkumar Shah Jan 2021

The Characterization Of The Function(S) Of Crag In Basement Membrane Polarity, Hemin Pankajkumar Shah

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The abundant epithelial cells play various roles in the development and maintenance of an organism, and their apical-basolateral polarity is a unique characteristic that is imperative to their function and integrity. This polarity is maintained via various environmental cues and tightly regulated intracellular trafficking, where the presence of the basement membrane (BM) provides a basal cue. The BM is a specialized extracellular matrix (ECM) secreted by the epithelial cells, which accumulates on the basal side and serves as their mechanical anchorage. Although the BM is of paramount importance in the apical-basolateral polarity and the loss of BM’s integrity is a …
