A Touchy Subject: Optimality And Coreference, Jill De Villiers, Jacqueline Cahillane, Emily Altreuter Jan 2021

A Touchy Subject: Optimality And Coreference, Jill De Villiers, Jacqueline Cahillane, Emily Altreuter

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Four studies are reported that compare production and comprehension of structures involving Principle A and B with 68 English speaking children. The stimuli included simple and complex sentences combined with simple and quantified NPs, each with reflexives and pronouns. A novel technique using a laptop proved successful for eliciting stimulus descriptions as well as truth value judgment. The results test a recent Optimality account of binding by Hendriks and Spenader (2004), but it is argued that more constraints are needed. Although the data can be fit well by the constraints, questions remain about whether it is theoretically satisfactory.

Purification And Activity Analysis Of A Highly Active Recombinant Catalase From Psychrophilic Bacterium Psychrobacter Cryohaloentis, Andrew Stewart Jan 2021

Purification And Activity Analysis Of A Highly Active Recombinant Catalase From Psychrophilic Bacterium Psychrobacter Cryohaloentis, Andrew Stewart

Honors Program Theses

To date, the genus Psychrobacter includes 37 recognized bacterial species isolated from different sources ranging from Siberian permafrost (P. cryohalolentis) to seal feces (P. lutiphocae). Due to its diverse ecological niches, several species belonging to the genus have different enzymatic activities with potential applications in bioremediation and the food industry. In this study, a bioprospecting approach was used to perform a in depth analysis of a Psychrobacter-like bacterial strain isolated from goose feces (designated as Psychrobacter unknown). The phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene and homologous sequence studies suggest that the strain may represent a novel species of the Psychrobacter …

Machine Ethics, Ethics For Machines: Context-Based Modeling For Machines Making Ethical Decisions, Jaysa Ramirez Jan 2021

Machine Ethics, Ethics For Machines: Context-Based Modeling For Machines Making Ethical Decisions, Jaysa Ramirez

Honors Program Theses

Machine ethics is an emerging, interdisciplinary field that focuses on if – and if so, how – machines can make ethical decisions autonomously. Through a close study of two positions on whether or not machines can be moral agents, this project sheds light on a clash of assumptions that is keeping the field of machine ethics in limbo. After making this clash of assumptions clear, I raise two questions which get at the scope of machine ethics itself: 1) What makes ethical decision-making different from other kinds of decision-making? 2) To what extent can machines engage with ethics and make …

Convergent Synthesis Of Anaephene B, Megan Johnson

Honors Program Theses

Many organisms are capable of producing organic compounds as secondary metabolites; these natural products can be quite pharmaceutically and medicinally relevant.1 Typically, the more unique an organism, the more unique its secondary metabolites. Cyanobacteria, an abundant microalgal organism, is capable of producing a myriad of novel natural products.2 The unique photosynthetic and autotrophic properties of cyanobacteria allow for the production of many secondary metabolites, including lipopeptides, amino acids, fatty acids, macrolides, amides, and others.2,3 Staphylococcus aureus is one the most common bacterial infections in the world.4 S. aureus produces a number of metabolites that inhibit host immune responses.4 As a …

E-Memos 2.0: An Empirical Study Of How Attorneys Write, Brad Desnoyer Jan 2021

E-Memos 2.0: An Empirical Study Of How Attorneys Write, Brad Desnoyer

Faculty Works

Email has changed law practice. It is now changing the legal writing classroom. For over a decade, scholars have developed a foundation for teaching e-memos. But as e-memo pedagogy evolved, scholars diverged in their advice and their textbook samples, leaving professors and students with contradictory instruction. This Article seeks to bridge that divide and build upon the scholarly foundation with empirical evidence.

Between 2018 and 2019, over 100 practicing attorneys reviewed and ranked sample, substantive e-memos and answered questions about e-memo preferences and habits. The results of the study reveal attorneys prefer e-memos with explicit and detailed legal reasoning, not …

The Ancient Greek Roots Of Cross-Cultural Comparison, Stavros Moutsios Jan 2021

The Ancient Greek Roots Of Cross-Cultural Comparison, Stavros Moutsios

Comparative Civilizations Review

The paper traces the impartial comparative gaze of the Ancient Greeks, in relation to their ontological understanding of the world, and with respect to the domains of epistêmê, politics, and paideia, all operating in the field of logos, which underpinned the life of the democratic polis. The absence of any apocalyptic truth and predefined historical pathway in the Greeks’ conception of the world, their esteem for intellectual activity and philosophical inquiry, and their questioning of their laws and institutions as part of their educational and political life are all, as the paper demonstrates, at the root of …

Modeling And Prioritizing Interventions Using Pollution Hotspots For Reducing Nutrients, Atrazine And E. Coli Concentrations In A Watershed, Olufemi Abimbola, Aaron Mittelstet, Tiffany L. Messer, Elaine Berry, Ann Van Griensven

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Excess nutrients and herbicides remain two major causes of waterbody impairment globally. In an attempt to better understand pollutant sources in the Big Sandy Creek Watershed (BSCW) and the prospects for successful remediation, a program was initiated to assist agricultural producers with the implementation of best management practices (BMPs). The objectives were to (1) simulate BMPs within hotspots to determine reductions in pollutant loads and (2) to determine if water-quality standards are met at the watershed outlet. Regression-based load estimator (LOADEST) was used for determining sediment, nutrient and atrazine loads, while artificial neural networks (ANN) were used for determining E. …

Museum Representations Of Contested Spaces: The Kuril Islands, Emily Sandall Jan 2021

Museum Representations Of Contested Spaces: The Kuril Islands, Emily Sandall

Slavic Studies Honors Papers

Since the turn of the twenty-first century, a boom of museums focused on the Ainu cultural subject has emerged in both Russia and Japan. By conceptualizing museums as nonneutral and culturally embedded productions which attempt to convey knowledge of foreign spaces to home spaces, this thesis will analyze the ways in which various museum institutions in Russia and Japan, as well as those produced by Ainu activist groups, choose to tell certain stories about the disputed Kuril Island territories and the Ainu people, and to map those stories within the broader colonial framework of the Kuril Islands dispute and indigenous …

Tribute To Professor David Markell: A Colleague Among Colleagues, Erin Ryan

Scholarly Publications

This essay was written to celebrate David Markell at his retirement from an extraordinary career in both civil service and academia. To a prolific career of scholarly writing, Dave brought the rare gift of high-level practical experience in environmental governance, enabling him to marry a natural gift for academic analysis with an in-depth, field-level understanding of the constraints, challenges, and rate-determining steps of environmental law. As a result, both his scholarship and his teaching were infused with a level of insight that most law professors never quite reach. The incorporation of these twin gifts into his written work invites the …

Biosupremacy: Big Data, Antitrust, And Monopolistic Power Over Human Behavior, Mason Marks

Scholarly Publications

Since 2001, five leading technology companies have acquired more than 600 other firms while avoiding antitrust enforcement. By accumulating technologies in adjacent or unrelated industries, these companies have grown so powerful that their influence over human affairs equals that of many governments. Their power stems from data collected by devices that people welcome into their homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces. When paired with artificial intelligence, these devices form a vast surveillance network that sorts people into increasingly specific categories related to health, sexuality, religion, and other categories. However, this surveillance network was not created solely to observe human behavior; …

Acquisition Of The Spanish Preterite And Imperfect By Non-Native Students In A Traditional Classroom Vs. A Hybrid Setting, Erin Christine Paulli Weldon Jan 2021

Acquisition Of The Spanish Preterite And Imperfect By Non-Native Students In A Traditional Classroom Vs. A Hybrid Setting, Erin Christine Paulli Weldon

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

High school students learning Spanish often struggle with the acquisition of the past tense. Spanish requires differentiation between aspects (preterite and imperfect) of the past tense; a linguistic contrast that does not exist in English. While this has been researched for years in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), the increasing availability of technology offers a new angle from which to explore students’ ability to master this concept. In the 2020-2021 school year, the presence of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) forced schools to overhaul and adapt the learning environment during a pandemic in which a fully traditional in-person model was not a …

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman Jan 2021

Integrating The Humanities With Engineering Through A Global Case Study Course, Kirsten A. Davis, Siddhant S. Joshi, Lori Czerwionka, Francisco Montalvo, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Joe Tort, Jennifer Marston William, E. Nauman

Journal of International Engineering Education

As the world becomes more connected and globalized, the problems that engineers are called upon to solve are increasingly complex and interdependent. Unfortunately, engineering coursework has traditionally focused on abstract and closed-ended problem solving, offering few opportunities for students to develop these skills. In this practice paper, we argue for the importance of integrating the humanities and engineering to understand the multiple and intersecting layers of context in an engineering project. We then describe the Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects course, which we developed to help students acquire this perspective. The course was piloted in Spring 2021 in response to the obstacles …

Vascular Plants Of Northern Death Valley National Park (Death Valley, Last Chance Range, And Eureka Valley), Inyo County, California, Hester L. Bell, Sarah J. De Groot, Steve E. Schoenig

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The northern portion of Death Valley National Park closely (but not entirely) corresponds to the northernmost portion of the Mojave Desert in California. From 2014 through 2019 we surveyed the vascular plants in the Eureka Valley, northern Last Chance Range, and northern Death Valley. This study area covers 1735 sq km and ranges in elevation from 810 to 2577 m; it contains the tallest sand dunes in California, a calcium-rich mountain range, and alkaline seeps. These features provide specialized habitats for narrowly and regionally endemic plants. Fossil data from packrat middens suggest that the local climate has become warmer and …

Enhancing Learners’ Reading Comprehension Skills Using Multimodality In A Form Two Classroom In A Public Secondary School In Taita Taveta County: An Action Research., Lilian Mandilla

Master of Education

In the recent past, rapid technological advancements coupled with the increasing learner diversity as a result of social, economic, political, and cultural factors have completely altered the meaning process. The use of multiple representations of educational content would therefore, appropriate these learner differences and the multiplicity of text. A considerable body of knowledge indicates that multimodality provides affordance to multiple means of representation, expression, perception, and engagement thus promoting active learning. Numerous studies in the English language continue to indicate that multimodality is used in the teaching and learning of varied aspects of the English language. Based on other studies …

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho Jan 2021

Neanderthal Ecology In Western Iberia: The Case From Lapa Do Picareiro, Milena Moreira De Carvalho

Anthropology ETDs

In Iberia, potentially the last place where Neanderthals survived, the demographic breakdown of small, loosely connected populations seems to have been a significant driver their demise. Human responses to the climatic fluctuations of the Late Pleistocene, particularly Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, could be an explanation for the decreases in Neanderthal population size during this time; it may be that habitat fragmentation and environmental instability contributed to a demographic breakdown, resulting in small, secluded Neanderthal populations that remained for some time in refugia, even after the arrival of anatomically modern humans in Europe some 40,000 years ago. In this dissertation, …
