Get The Wiggles Out: Sensory Paths A Motor-Based Intervention To Decrease Out-Of-Seat Events In Preschool Children With Special Needs., Teresa Ludwig
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Sensory Paths are sensory motor-based interventions that will provide opportunities for teachers to incorporate structured movement into the natural classroom routine, such as before circle time, to help the children in their classes be ready for learning by increasing attention and decreasing out of seat events.
This single subject A-B-A design project, rooted in the Ecology of Human Performance framework, explored providing structured sensory motor-based opportunities prior to circle time throughout the classroom day to decrease interfering behaviors in the classroom, such as out of seat behaviors and improve attention during circle time.
The results indicate that the Sensory Paths …

Amphibian responses to stress are generally mediated through glucocorticoids produced by the hypothalamic–pituitary–interrenal axis. Chronic elevation of glucocorticoids can result in delayed wound healing and growth, but less is known about its influence on behavioral responses to predators. We examined the effect of acute and chronic CORT elevation on exploratory and foraging behaviors of Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) exposed to kairomones from a predatory snake. We established ‘No CORT,' ‘Acute CORT,' and ‘Chronic CORT’ conditions during an 18-d preparation phase by varying salamander exposure to an exogenous source of CORT (0.51 mg/mL) delivered via cutaneous patch. …
A New Paper-Based Microfluidic Device For Sensitive Detection Of Nitrate In Seawater, Amer Charbaji
A New Paper-Based Microfluidic Device For Sensitive Detection Of Nitrate In Seawater, Amer Charbaji
Open Access Dissertations
Nitrate is a naturally occurring nutrient that is part of the nitrogen cycle. Monitoring of this nutrient in water bodies ensures its safety for consumption, guards against water nutrient pollution, and provides oceanographers and marine scientists with data to better understand nitrogen cycling and other phenomena of interest. Currently, there are several techniques available for nitrate detection. However, they either lack the required sensitivity for use in the field, or are costly, time consuming, and require special handling of the water sample as it gets sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Paper-based technologies possess several advantages that can facilitate sensitive …

"As Long As I'M Me": From Personhood To Personal Identity In Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
"As Long As I'M Me": From Personhood To Personal Identity In Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
As people, especially older people, begin to develop dementia, we confront ethical questions about when and how to intervene in their increasingly compromised decision-making. The prevailing approach in philosophically-inclined bioethics to tackling this challenge has been to develop theories of “decision-making capacity” based on the same characteristics that entitle the decisions of moral persons to respect in general. This Article argues that this way of thinking about the problem has missed the point. Because the disposition of property is an identity-dependent right, what matters in dementia and decision-making is an individual’s personal identity with their prior self, not their moral …

Sub-Optimal Deterrence And Criminal Sanctioning Under The U.S. Clean Water Act, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa Jarrell Ozymy
Water Law Review
Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") and Department of Justice put forth significant resources to investigate and prosecute environmental crimes under the U.S. Clean Water Act ("CWA"). Criminal sanctions are used to raise the cost of violations relative to the benefits of criminal action to directly deter rational individuals and firms from offending and indirectly via the observation of other potential offenders. While many studies examine sanctioning in environmental law, little research explores the plausibility of any deterrent effects of criminal sanctions under the CWA. We use content analysis to explore all criminal prosecutions resulting from EPA criminal investigations, …

Pushing Against Patriarchy: Indonesian Muslim Women Using Islam As A Form Of Resistance, Ariana Siddiqui-Dennis
Pushing Against Patriarchy: Indonesian Muslim Women Using Islam As A Form Of Resistance, Ariana Siddiqui-Dennis
Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
Seldom has Islam been understood in mainstream discourse as a means of achieving gender equality and resisting patriarchal powers. However, Indonesian Muslim women organizers did just that. This project analyzes how patriarchal culture, colonialism, the state, and religious powers have shaped current gender norms regarding women in the public and private sphere since the twentieth century. Centering how Javanese Muslim women have used Islam to resist patriarchal authorities, I analyze sociological, historical, and gender and sexuality studies. This project challenges conservative interpretations of Islam used within Muslim communities to limit women’s rights, and challenges Islamophobic misconceptions that frame the religion …

The Power Of Exogenous Variables In Predicting West Nile Virus In South Carolina, Christopher Lee Glaze
The Power Of Exogenous Variables In Predicting West Nile Virus In South Carolina, Christopher Lee Glaze
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the availability of medical data, environmental surveillance tools, and heightened public awareness, West Nile Virus (WNv) remains a global health hazard. Reliable methods for predicting WNv outbreaks remain elusive, and environmental health managers must take preventive actions without the benefit of simple predictive tools. The purpose of this ex post facto research was to examine the accuracy and timeliness of exogenous data in predicting outbreaks of WNv in South Carolina. Decision theory, the CYNEFIN construct, and systems theory provided the theoretical framework for this study, allowing the researcher to broaden traditional decision theory concepts with powerful system-level precepts. Using …
Factors For Consideration In A Plan For Terrestrial Oil Disaster Mitigation, Olaniyi O. Oyebode
Factors For Consideration In A Plan For Terrestrial Oil Disaster Mitigation, Olaniyi O. Oyebode
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Oil spills, are common disasters associated with hydrocarbon exploration and production, can be devastating and severely impact water quality, which can be detrimental to human life and the environment. One of the primary objectives of oil spill planning and response, aside from protecting human beings, is to reduce the environmental consequences of spills and cleanup efforts. This objective is best achieved by responders identifying sensitive resources ahead of time to establish protection priorities and select cleanup strategies. When a plan is well situated, within the limited hours available to respond, responders will not have to contact all of the various …
Interpersonal Conflict And Work-Related Stress Among Correctional Officers, Katarzyna Sowa-Lapinskas
Interpersonal Conflict And Work-Related Stress Among Correctional Officers, Katarzyna Sowa-Lapinskas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Increasingly, research has been conducted on the penal system, yet few researchers have focused on correctional staff. Due to the nature of their work, correctional officers (COs) experience a high degree of stress that is inmate related, occupational, organizational, and psycho–social. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the work experiences of COs in rural correctional facilities in Alaska and to learn how correctional staff perceive and mitigate work-related stress stemming from interpersonal conflict. The theoretical framework for this study was Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional theory of stress and coping. Data were collected using semistructured interviews conducted …

Amenity Migrations And Gentrification Among Low-Income Residents Of Rural North Carolina Seeking Education Or Lifelong Learning, Lenora Ellen Attles-Allen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractSixty-four percent of North Carolina's growth is due to migration, translating into approximately 86,200 migrants residing in the state. Amenity migrations (the relocation of specific populations into sometimes, low-income, rural communities of people) have given rise to changes in many residents' lived experiences related to North Carolina communities seeking education or lifelong learning. Many older adults seek lifelong learning education that is affected by amenity migrations. As new technologies and socioeconomic changes emerge, baby boomers may strive to compete with millennials for jobs and domestic stability. The purpose of this heuristic, phenomenological study was to understand the daily, lived financial …
Lived Experiences Of Adults Using Emotional Support Animals To Cope With Anxiety, Kenneth Patrick Fisher
Lived Experiences Of Adults Using Emotional Support Animals To Cope With Anxiety, Kenneth Patrick Fisher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Anxiety is a clinical disorder affecting nearly 40 million adults in the United States. Treating anxiety symptoms has been most effective when clinicians combine medication and therapy intervention. Still, treatments for anxiety varies among clinicians to determine which one may be the most effective. Emotional support animals (ESAs) provide one kind of intervention that clinicians use to treat anxiety in adults. However, existing research literature has not fully explored the phenomenon of lived experiences of coping with anxiety among adults with an ESA. Social cognitive theory provided a basis for this study’s theoretical framework for understanding this phenomenon. This study …

Algorithms In Business, Merchant-Consumer Interactions, & Regulation, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim
Faculty Scholarship
The shift towards the use of algorithms in business has transformed merchant–consumer interactions. Products and services are increasingly tailored for consumers through algorithms that collect and analyze vast amounts of data from interconnected devices, digital platforms, and social networks. While traditionally merchants and marketeers have utilized market segmentation, customer demographic profiles, and statistical approaches, the exponential increase in consumer data and computing power enables them to develop and implement algorithmic techniques that change consumer markets and society as a whole. Algorithms enable targeting of consumers more effectively, in real-time, and with high predictive accuracy in pricing and profiling strategies. In …
Law Enforcement’S Lochner, Miriam H. Baer
Law Enforcement’S Lochner, Miriam H. Baer

Long-established rules of constitutional criminal procedure empower the government to cheaply and efficiently demand information from businesses and corporations, even when those entities are themselves targets of criminal investigations. These rules have become extremely valuable to government investigators, notwithstanding their contestable premises and wide-ranging effects on employees, owners, and consumers.
This ease of access era, however, may be nearing its end. A convergence of changes in how the Supreme Court views Fourth Amendment privacy rights on the one hand, and how it conceptualizes corporate personhood on the other, is apt to trigger an erosion of government enforcement power. At the …

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles
Insomnia is linked to fatigue, distractibility, mood instability, decreased satisfaction, and overall decreased quality of life. Optimal therapy can aid patients in returning to baseline and increase their quality of life. Zolpidem is a helpful drug for the treatment of insomnia in conjunction with cognitive-behavioral therapy. When prescribed to elderly patients, the dose should be adjusted to account for their slower drug metabolism. Still, zolpidem is considered a reasonable choice of therapy because it has a lower incidence of residual daytime sleepiness and risk of falls when compared to other drugs. The most concerning adverse effects, which are often the …

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare, autosomal recessive neuromuscular degenerative disease characterized by loss of spinal cord motor neurons leading to progressive muscle wasting. The most common pathology results from a homozygous disruption in the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene on chromosome 5q13 via deletion, conversion, or mutation. SMN2 is a near duplicate of SMN1 that can produce full-length SMN mRNA transcripts, but its overall production capability of these mRNA transcripts is lower than that seen in SMN1. This leads to lower levels of functional SMN protein within motor neurons. The FDA approved nusinersen in December 2016 to …

The medicinal fungus Ganoderma lucidum is used as a dietary supplement and health tonic, but whether it affects longevity remains unclear. We show here that a water extract of G. lucidum mycelium extends lifespan of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The G. lucidum extract reduces the level of fibrillarin (FIB-1), a nucleolar protein that correlates inversely with longevity in various organisms. Furthermore, G. lucidum treatment increases expression of the autophagosomal protein marker LGG-1, and lifespan extension is abrogated in mutant C. elegans strains that lack atg-18, daf-16, or sir-2.1, indicating that autophagy and stress resistance pathways are required to extend lifespan. …
