Phylogeography, Diversification, And Historical Demography Of The White-Toothed Rats (Berylmys) In Indochina, Kristy Lee Tuttle
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Berylmys, the White-toothed rats, and other members of the Rattus sl (Rattus, Maxomys, Leopoldamys, Niviventer, Bandicota, and Sundamys) evolved from 3-5 million years ago during a period of dynamic landscape change in Indochinese south Asia wherein climatically stable, warm forests of Miocene and Pliocene Indochina transitioned to a modern landscape regime. From the late Pliocene through the terminal Pleistocene, climate changes, ecological shifts, rising and falling sea levels, and tectonic uplift drove adaptive radiation within Rattus sl, in complex interactions that are still not completely understood. The goal of this study is to understand species relationships and population structure in …

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences
Gene expression is a powerful tool to understand structure-function relationships in the nervous system. This study reports global gene expression changes induced by flupirtine in brain of male and female Cln3Δex7/8 mice, exposing potential flupirtine targets at the molecular level. Gene expression analysis of male and female Cln3Δex7/8 mouse brain was determined following oral administration of flupirtine for 14 weeks, using Mouse Genome 430 2.0 array Chips and an Affymetrix platform. Fifty-six genes in males and 79 in females were differentially expressed in flupirtine- versus vehicle-treated Cln3Δex7/8 mouse brain. Flupirtine altered several pathways in Cln3Δex7/8 mouse brain: apoptosis, the complement …

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by pathological deposition of misfolded self-protein amyloid beta (Aβ) which in kind facilitates tau aggregation and neurodegeneration. Neuroinflammation is accepted as a key disease driver caused by innate microglia activation. Recently, adaptive immune alterations have been uncovered that begin early and persist throughout the disease. How these occur and whether they can be harnessed to halt disease progress is unclear. We propose that self-antigens would induct autoreactive effector T cells (Teffs) that drive pro-inflammatory and neurodestructive immunity leading to cognitive impairments. Here, we investigated the role of effector immunity and …
The Violence Of Competing Masculinities In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S Los Pazos De Ulloa, Zachary Erwin
The Violence Of Competing Masculinities In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S Los Pazos De Ulloa, Zachary Erwin
Decimonónica
Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Los pazos de Ulloa (1886) takes place in rural Galicia against the backdrop of Spain’s Revolution of 1868. Its plot is largely told through the eyes of Julián Álvarez, a young priest who travels from Santiago de Compostela to the once-grand and now- decaying Ulloa estate to become its new chaplain. There, he finds Pedro Moscoso, the de facto marquis of Ulloa, who is dominated by the estate’s peasant majordomo, Primitivo, and who has fathered an illegitimate son with his maid, Sabel, Primitivo’s daughter. Pedro marries his wealthy cousin, Nucha, in hopes of shoring up the Ulloa …

Shifting Critical Approaches To The Elusive Jewishness Of María By Jorge Isaacs, Naomi Lindstrom
Shifting Critical Approaches To The Elusive Jewishness Of María By Jorge Isaacs, Naomi Lindstrom
Decimonónica
This study examines and evaluates the ways in which critics have dealt with the question of a Jewish thematic current, self-awareness, or perspective in the much-reprinted 1867 novel María by the Colombian writer Jorge Isaacs (1837-1895). While scholars have long exhibited an awareness of Isaacs’s paternal Jewish descent and at times made observations concerning Jewish references or a Jewish outlook in the novel, it was Doris Sommer’s 1989 article “El mal de María: (Con)fusión en un romance nacional,” later included in her influential Foundational Fictions: The National Romances of Latin America (1991), that launched the current discussion over Jewish themes …
Assembly And Function Of The Polycystin Receptor-Ion Channel Complexes And The Otop1 Proton Channel, Bin Li
Assembly And Function Of The Polycystin Receptor-Ion Channel Complexes And The Otop1 Proton Channel, Bin Li
Theses and Dissertations
Polycystin complexes, or TRPP/PKD complexes, made of transient receptor potential channel polycystin subfamily proteins (TRPP) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD) proteins, play key roles in coupling extracellular stimuli with intracellular Ca2+ signals. For example, the TRPP2/PKD1 complex has a crucial function in renal physiology, with mutations in either protein causing autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In contrast, the TRPP3/PKD1L3 complex responds to low pH and plays a potential role in sour taste. It has been previously shown that the protein partners interact via association of the C-terminal or transmembrane segments, with consequences for the assembly, surface expression, and function …

A Long-Acting Curcumin Nanoparticle/In Situ Hydrogel Composite For The Treatment Of Uveal Melanoma, Lingxiao Xie, Weizhou Yue, Khaled Ibrahim, Jie Shen
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular tumor in adults with high mortality. In order to improve prognosis and survival of UM patients, it is critical to inhibit tumor progression and metastasis as early as possible after the initial presentation/diagnosis of the disease. Sustained local delivery of antitumor therapeutics in the posterior region can potentially achieve long-term UM inhibition, improve target therapeutic delivery to the posterior segments, as well as reduce injection frequency and hence improved patient compliance. To address the highly unmet medical need in UM therapy, a bioinspired in situ gelling hydrogel system composed of naturally …

The Non-Consequentialist Uses Of Economic Analysis: A Comment On Dagan And Kreitner, Economic Analysis In Law, Lewis A. Kornhauser
Faculty Articles
In this essay, I focus on the uses of economic analysis in non-consequentialist evaluations. I proceed in two steps. First, I consider the applications that Dagan and Kreitner suggest in their Part III. I argue that (a) economic analysis has already contributed to these inquiries; and (b) that Dagan and Kreitner have not adequately specified the task to be undertaken. Second, I argue, through an extended example, that Dagan and Kreitner have overlooked arguably the most significant use of economic analysis in non-consequentialist evaluation: the investigation of the logical relation among various values that we may endorse.

In this short Essay, we discuss the lack of racial and gender diversity on and around the Supreme Court. As we note, the ranks of the Court’s Justices and its clerks historically have been dominated by white men. But this homogeneity is not limited to the Court’s members or its clerks. As we explain, much of the Court’s broader ecosystem suffers from this same lack of diversity. The advocates who argue before the Court are primarily white men; the experts cited in the Court’s opinions, as well as the experts on whom Court commentators rely in interpreting those opinions, are …

Antibiotic Resistance In Manure- Amended Agricultural Soils, Maranatha Zelt, Zachary Staley, Xu Li, Bing Wang, Daniel N. Miller, Amy Schmidt
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Manure application to agricultural land benefits soil health and agronomic yields. However, as antibiotic resistance becomes a more serious threat to public health, there is concern that antibiotic resistance originating from livestock manure could impact human health through contamination of the environment or food. This study sought to quantify this risk by monitoring concentrations of antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes in fallow soil during the period of October through April, representing fall manure application through spring planting. Resistance to three common antibiotics— tylosin, azithromycin and tetracycline— was monitored following application of fresh, stockpiled, or composted beef feedlot manure, or inorganic …
The Taste Of Blood, Veronica Jove
The Taste Of Blood, Veronica Jove
Student Theses and Dissertations
Human blood and floral nectar are both appetizing meals to a hungry female mosquito, yet each meal fulfills a distinct nutritional requirement. While protein obtained from blood is required for females to develop eggs and successfully reproduce, carbohydrates supplied from plant nectar are sufficient for energy metabolism in both females and males. To procure essential nutrients from these distinct food sources, females employ two mutually exclusive feeding programs with unique sensory appendages, meal sizes, digestive tract targets, and metabolic fates. When a female is ready to reproduce, she must selectively seek the taste of blood and ignore the sweet taste …
Not Black And White: Bmp Signaling Drives Melanocyte Differentiation Downstream Of Stem Cell Activation, Nicole Rai Infarinato
Not Black And White: Bmp Signaling Drives Melanocyte Differentiation Downstream Of Stem Cell Activation, Nicole Rai Infarinato
Student Theses and Dissertations
Tissue stem cells (SCs) maintain, regenerate, and repair the body over the course of an organism's lifetime. To preserve their long-term function, SCs must exert precise control over their cell state dynamics as they move from quiescence to activation and commit to full differentiation. My graduate research has been centered on investigating the molecular mechanisms that fuel these transitions in melanocyte stem cells (McSCs), a unique neural crest-derived SC population located in the hair follicle (HF). Through periodic bouts synchronous with HF cycling, quiescent McSCs become activated to proliferate, giving rise to committed proliferative progeny (McCP) that differentiate into mature …
Restriction Of Food Intake By Dorsomedial Hypothalamus, Caner Caglar
Restriction Of Food Intake By Dorsomedial Hypothalamus, Caner Caglar
Student Theses and Dissertations
Leptin deficient ob/ob mice eat voraciously and their food intake is markedly reduced by leptin treatment. Leptin acts in part by regulating the activity of AGRP neurons and POMC neurons in the arcuate nucleus and neurons in other brain regions. In these dissertation, I will describe how we identify novel neuronal populations that are regulated by leptin directly or indirectly. In order to identify novel sites of leptin action, we used phosphotrap, to molecularly profile leptin responsive neurons in the hypothalamus and brain stem. In addition to identifying several known leptin responsive populations, we found that neurons in Dorsomedial Hypothalamus …
The Role Of Dna Methylation In Defining The Vocal Learning Transcriptome Of The Zebra Finch, Caitlin Sun Gilbert
The Role Of Dna Methylation In Defining The Vocal Learning Transcriptome Of The Zebra Finch, Caitlin Sun Gilbert
Student Theses and Dissertations
Vocal learning is a rare, complex behavior which is a critical component of human spoken language acquisition. It is convergent across several independent lineages of birds and mammals, including songbirds and humans. The development of speech and song production in humans and songbirds is strikingly similar, though the molecular mechanisms underlying these similarities are not yet understood. Our lab has previously found convergently differentially expressed genes in the vocal learning circuitry of humans and song-learning birds relative to adjacent non-vocal motor circuits. Most notably, the RA song nucleus in the songbird is molecularly convergent with the human laryngeal motor cortex. …
Mechanisms For The Evolution Of Superorganismality In Ants, Vikram Chandra
Mechanisms For The Evolution Of Superorganismality In Ants, Vikram Chandra
Student Theses and Dissertations
Ant colonies appear to behave as superorganisms; they exhibit very high levels of within-colony cooperation, and very low levels of within-colony conflict. The evolution of such superorganismality has occurred multiple times across the animal phylogeny, and indeed, origins of multicellularity represent the same evolutionary process. Understanding the origin and elaboration of superorganismality is a major focus of research in evolutionary biology. Although much is known about the ultimate factors that permit the evolution and persistence of superorganisms, we know relatively little about how they evolve. One limiting factor to the study of superorganismality is the difficulty of conducting manipulative experiments …
A Role For Acsbg1 In Obesity-Accelerated Breast, Olivia Maguire
A Role For Acsbg1 In Obesity-Accelerated Breast, Olivia Maguire
Student Theses and Dissertations
Overweight and obesity affect more than 70% of American adults and are major risk factors for the development of comorbidities, including cancer. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in American women: 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes, and more than 40,000 women die from breast cancer each year. Obesity is associated with increased incidence and worse prognosis in breast cancer, including aggressive triple-negative breast cancer, which has a particularly poor prognosis with few treatment options. The goal of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms by which obesity promotes breast cancer progression. To …
The Role Of Compartmentalized Metabolism In Cellular Metal Homeostasis, Ross A. Weber
The Role Of Compartmentalized Metabolism In Cellular Metal Homeostasis, Ross A. Weber
Student Theses and Dissertations
The building blocks of cells are usually thought to be DNA, RNA, and proteins. However, life, as we know it, is not possible without iron. While the list of iron's vital cellular functions is extensive, iron is also quite cytotoxic. Thus, great pains have been taken, at the gene regulation level, to assure that a cell has sufficient iron to copy its genome and power its mitochondria but not too much to damage its membranes with lipid peroxides. Cellular organelles, which accompanied the rise of atmospheric oxygen and an increased need for iron, also play a key role in iron …
Developmental Dynamics Of 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine And Its Role In The Terminal Differentiation Of Neurons, Elitsa Stoyanova
Developmental Dynamics Of 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine And Its Role In The Terminal Differentiation Of Neurons, Elitsa Stoyanova
Student Theses and Dissertations
While epigenetic dynamics in mitotic differentiating cells have been characterized in depth, little is known about how postmitotic neurons regulate their chromatin state. Modulation of transcription through the regulation of accessibility of transcription factor binding sites is essential for the regulation of migration, synapse formation and terminal differentiation. Although 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), the oxidized form of 5-methylcytosine, accumulates to high levels in neuronal lineages and refines the genomic binding of MeCP2, the functional consequences of 5hmC deposition in differentiating neurons have not been determined. We report high resolution characterization of the genomic landscape of developing postmitotic Purkinje neurons, confirm the relationship …
