The Influences Of Green Infrastructure On Levels Of Somatic And Male-Specific Coliphages And E. Coli At Shadyside Park, Oula Salih, Sara Gibes, Kelly Dubois Jan 2021

The Influences Of Green Infrastructure On Levels Of Somatic And Male-Specific Coliphages And E. Coli At Shadyside Park, Oula Salih, Sara Gibes, Kelly Dubois

Summer Research

During the summer of 2019, Plaster Creek Stewards executed a green infrastructure project that proceeded with development of a floodplain at Shadyside park with the purpose to reduce the flow rate of Plaster Creek and prevent the occurrence of erosion from both heavy rainfall and flooding¹. In addition, microbial contamination (both bacterial and viral) has a significant impact on bodies of water. Viral coliphages, specifically male-specific and somatic phages, are used as indicators of fecal contamination in water and can be used to identify sources of contamination². A case study was conducted to evaluate how this floodplain influenced the microbial …

Conservation Easements As A Tool For Nature Protection, William Snape Iii Jan 2021

Conservation Easements As A Tool For Nature Protection, William Snape Iii

PEEL Faculty Scholarship

The conflict between proponents of land and water conservation and those promoting traditional, natural-resource intensive development is a well-known story. One side sees the economic development of land and water as a fundamental right, while the other side values preservation of wildlife, ecosystems, and biological diversity as at least an equal right. This article examines the intersection of these two viewpoints: the active conservation of land and water resources on private land through conservation easements that extend the long- standing property law notion of easements to the modern situation in which a landowner commits to maintain and conserve the property …

Development Of A Computer Model To Simulate Battery Performance For Use In Renewable Energy Simulations, Arjun Sundararajan Jan 2021

Development Of A Computer Model To Simulate Battery Performance For Use In Renewable Energy Simulations, Arjun Sundararajan

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Renewable and clean energy has been the driving force behind the booming storage industry. The need for producing energy from clean and quickly replenishable energy sources has never been as high as it is now. However, renewable energy only supplies a little over a quarter of the world’s electricity needs and much less of the world’s total energy requirements. One reason is the intermittent nature of renewable energy. Inexpensive and convenient storage technologies are required to solve this issue. It is believed that batteries offer the most viable solution to conquer the problem of renewable energy intermittency. To aid the …

Background and objective

Earlier uncertain implications of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the pediatric population prompted the authorities to close schools worldwide under the premise that school settings would serve as drivers of an increase in the cases of COVID-19. Safe and equitable full-in-person school instruction is a critical factor in the continued educational gains of children and for their general well-being. The objective of this study was to report epidemiological trends related to the increasing percentage of students returning to in-person instruction, the suspected in-school transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), the virus that …

A Systematic Review Of Brainstem Contributions To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ala Seif, Carly Shea, Susanne Schmid, Ryan A Stevenson Jan 2021

A Systematic Review Of Brainstem Contributions To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ala Seif, Carly Shea, Susanne Schmid, Ryan A Stevenson

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one in 66 children in Canada. The contributions of changes in the cortex and cerebellum to autism have been studied for decades. However, our understanding of brainstem contributions has only started to emerge more recently. Disruptions of sensory processing, startle response, sensory filtering, sensorimotor gating, multisensory integration and sleep are all features of ASD and are processes in which the brainstem is involved. In addition, preliminary research into brainstem contribution emphasizes the importance of the developmental timeline rather than just the mature brainstem. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review …

Effects Of Maternal Obesity And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus On The Placenta: Current Knowledge And Targets For Therapeutic Interventions, Samantha Bedell, Janine Hutson, Barbra De Vrijer, Genevieve Eastabrook Jan 2021

Effects Of Maternal Obesity And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus On The Placenta: Current Knowledge And Targets For Therapeutic Interventions, Samantha Bedell, Janine Hutson, Barbra De Vrijer, Genevieve Eastabrook

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are becoming more common among pregnant women worldwide and are individually associated with a number of placenta-mediated obstetric complications, including preeclampsia, macrosomia, intrauterine growth restriction and stillbirth. The placenta serves several functions throughout pregnancy and is the main exchange site for the transfer of nutrients and gas from mother to fetus. In pregnancies complicated by maternal obesity or GDM, the placenta is exposed to environmental changes, such as increased inflammation and oxidative stress, dyslipidemia, and altered hormone levels. These changes can affect placental development and function and lead to abnormal fetal growth and development …

Adaptation Of A Mouse Doppler Echocardiograph System For Assessing Cardiac Function And Thermal Performance In A Juvenile Salmonid, Carlie A. Muir, Bryan D. Neff, Sashko Damjanovski Jan 2021

Adaptation Of A Mouse Doppler Echocardiograph System For Assessing Cardiac Function And Thermal Performance In A Juvenile Salmonid, Carlie A. Muir, Bryan D. Neff, Sashko Damjanovski

Paediatrics Publications

Measures of cardiac performance are pertinent to the study of thermal physiology and exercise in teleosts, particularly as they pertain to migration success. Increased heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output have previously been linked to improved swimming performance and increased upper thermal tolerance in anadromous salmonids. To assess thermal performance in fishes, it has become commonplace to measure the response of maximum heart rate to warming using electrocardiograms. However, electrocardiograms do not provide insight into the hemodynamic characteristics of heart function that can impact whole-animal performance. Doppler echocardiography is a popular tool used to examine live animal processes, including …

The Effect Of Maternal Protein Restriction During Perinatal Life On The Inflammatory Response In Pediatric Rats, Ruud A.W. Veldhuizen, Brandon Baer, Lynda A. Mccaig, Lauren A. Solomon, Lisa Cameron, Daniel B. Hardy Jan 2021

Hardy

Paediatrics Publications

Fetal growth restriction can affect health outcomes in postnatal life. This study tested the hypothesis that the response to an inflammatory pulmonary insult is altered in pediatric fetal growth restricted rats. Using a low-protein diet during gestation and postnatal life, growth-restricted male and female rats and healthy control rats were exposed to an inflammatory insult via the intratracheal instillation of heat-killed bacteria. After 6 h, animal lungs were examined for lung inflammation and status of the surfactant system. The results showed that in response to an inflammatory insult, neutrophil infiltration was decreased in both male and female rats in the …

© 2020 International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society and John Wiley & Sons Ltd Many neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases and other brain disorders are accompanied by impairments in high-level cognitive functions including memory, attention, motivation, and decision-making. Despite several decades of extensive research, neuroscience is little closer to discovering new treatments. Key impediments include the absence of validated and robust cognitive assessment tools for facilitating translation from animal models to humans. In this review, we describe a state-of-the-art platform poised to overcome these impediments and improve the success of translational research, the Mouse Translational Research Accelerator Platform (MouseTRAP), which is …

A Study Of Bone Histology Procedures And Applications, Breanna Smith

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Bone histology paired with ontogeny can allow for discovery of the way in which an individual grows. “Bone” umbrellas so many types and patterns which are all linked to both environmental and genetic influences. Vascular patterns allow for the differentiation of growth rates and growth periods. Veracious usage of terminology and proper specimen selection can lead to these explanations.

Facilitating Peace Leadership, Stan Amaladas Jan 2021

Facilitating Peace Leadership, Stan Amaladas

International Journal of Peace Studies

Informed by the disciplines of Leadership Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies, the author offers an understanding of peace leadership as being an interconnected affair of the head (consciousness-raising), heart (feeling the need for transformative change), hands (to be moved to purposive action) and the holy (offering all the sacred gift of treating persons as persons). Building on an earlier publication in this Journal, this article reconstructs conditions for peace at intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cultural levels. It also offers a deutero learning framework and model for coordinating the efforts for the sake of peace through an understanding of leadership as …

Metabolic Reprogramming And Cell Adhesion In Acute Leukemia Adaptation To The Cns Niche, Nitesh D. Sharma, Esra'a Keewan, Ksenia Matlawska-Wasowska

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Involvement of the Central Nervous System (CNS) in acute leukemia confers poor prognosis and lower overall survival. Existing CNS-directed therapies are associated with a significant risk of short- or long-term toxicities. Leukemic cells can metabolically adapt and survive in the microenvironment of the CNS. The supporting role of the CNS microenvironment in leukemia progression and dissemination has not received sufficient attention. Understanding the mechanism by which leukemic cells survive in the nutrient-poor and oxygen-deprived CNS microenvironment will lead to the development of more specific and less toxic therapies. Here, we review the current literature regarding the roles of metabolic reprogramming …

The Open Neuroscience Initiative is a free-to-use textbook

This project began as a means to overcoming the financial burden that face undergraduate neuroscience students when buying textbooks. By compiling and writing a completely free-to-access textbook that covers the foundations of a typical college introduction to neuroscience course, students would have one less obstacle to overcome in their educational career, allowing them to focus their valuable time and attention on learning rather than finances. To make this project a reality, I began with a humble tweet in May 2019 that managed to gain a tiny bit of traction among the neuroscience …

Fashion, Models, And Intellectual Property, Andres Sawicki Jan 2021

Fashion, Models, And Intellectual Property, Andres Sawicki

Articles

In this Article, I revisit the impact of Professor Kal Raustiala and Professor Christopher Sprigman 's landmark article, The Piracy Paradox. Their work identified an empirical anomaly that was difficult to explain in light of the standard justification for intellectual property rights: although IP law does not grant meaningful exclusivity in novel fashion designs, the fashion industry invests significant resources developing those novel designs. To account for this anomaly, The Piracy Paradox shifted the focus from the supply side of innovation to the demand side. The standard justification emphasized that innovators face threats of copying that they cannot easily …

Enabling Instream Rights In The Mill Creek Zanja, Tyler Fields Jan 2021

Enabling Instream Rights In The Mill Creek Zanja, Tyler Fields

UC Law Environmental Journal

The Mill Creek Zanja is a 200-year-old, twelve-mile canal cut from the banks of a nearby stream. The Zanja was built originally as an irrigation canal to serve agriculture and industry in what is now Redlands, California located just outside Los Angeles. Since the Zanja’s construction in the early 19th century, the “rights” to the waters of the Zanja have been intensely litigated, highly sought after, and heavily debated. Today, the Zanja flow is around 40,000 to 50,000 acre feet per year. The water is used primarily by the City of Redlands for drinking water and by Crafton Water Company …

Subharmonic Frequencies In Guitar Spectra, Leah M. Bunnell Jan 2021

Subharmonic Frequencies In Guitar Spectra, Leah M. Bunnell

ETD Archive

Throughout this thesis, evidence is shown that suggests the existence of subharmonic frequencies in the Classical Spanish Acoustic Guitar and Fender Squier Electric Guitar spectra. The classic subharmonic undertone series mimics that of the harmonic overtone series, except that the fundamental frequency is divided by integer values instead of multiplied by integer values. Subharmonics that do not fit the classic subharmonic undertone series criteria are still classified as subharmonics, although subharmonics that do fit the criteria are emphasized. Throughout this manuscript, the author’s original experimental procedures and results are presented. Individual tones were recorded on both guitars on every string …

Mechanical Transformations: The Active Roles Of Machines In British Industrial-Era Writings, Julia R. Halamek Jan 2021

Mechanical Transformations: The Active Roles Of Machines In British Industrial-Era Writings, Julia R. Halamek

ETD Archive

Industrialization defined nineteenth-century Britain, bringing large-scale changes to the social order. Observers perceived that machines stood at the heart of these changes as much as inventors, manufacturers, and operatives, if not more so. A range of writers expressed their awareness of the transformative power of technology by endowing machines with a sense of life and influence according to four broad characterizations: machines as instruments of civilizational advancement disguised as mundane tools, organic life, bringers of order, and near-mythical embodiments of power. Critics of industry coopted such lofty language and turned it on its head to depict machines as destructive, sometimes …
