Academic Performance, Anxiety, And Feelings Of Classroom Displacement In College Students Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic., Myron Eusebio
Academic Performance, Anxiety, And Feelings Of Classroom Displacement In College Students Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic., Myron Eusebio
Psychology | Senior Theses
Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, universities are beginning to shift primarily to online courses and hybrid courses. This presents a potential issue because it disrupts the traditional learning experience that students expect from attending an academic institution. The pandemic and sudden disruption of traditional classroom learning may cause adverse changes in a student’s anxiety levels and academic performance. Research has shown that online courses often require students to have lower anxiety levels to perform well academically, which highlights a problematic relationship in students feeling higher levels of anxiety in online classes. (Solimeno et., 2007). The goal of this study is to …

Missing Voices Within The Classroom: Cultural Identity, Lexical, And Authenticity In Cajun, Creole, And Native American Children’S Literature, Albertaeve S. Abington-Pitre, Roxanne M. Bourque
Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction
It is important for all members of a culture or community (including school community) to “encourage children to understand cultural differences, to take pride in individual differences and use this understanding to develop uniqueness versus awkwardness in society” (Cox & Wallis, 1982, 264). If young children are supported within the visualization of how they reflectively see their fit within the world, there are possibilities to embrace the leadership benefits of heritage and belonging, and eventually gain the understanding of how to use their cultural authenticity as a strength of character development. Authors explored regional libraries for diverse books, specifically for …
Investigating The Role Of Schizophrenia-Associated Gene Expression In The Developing Human Brain Using Machine Learning, Katie Kelly
Other resources
Schizophrenia is a debilitating condition that affects 1% of the population, causes significant hardship and though there are treatments available they are characterised by several limitations. It is a complex mental disorder where some individuals show mild subclinical cognitive symptoms before psychosis onset in adolescence. The treatments available only target a portion of the symptoms and although extensive research has been conducted, a comprehensive understanding of the nature of schizophrenia remains elusive. Unlike other neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia symptoms do not typically present themselves until adolescence. This study aimed to discover gene co-expression networks at multiple developmental stages to identify candidate …

To What Extent Can Innovative International Project Delivery Strategies (Which Leverage Bim) Improve The Cost Certainty Of Large Complex Public Procurement Projects In The Context Of Irish Public Procurement?, Bim Tudublin, Roqaya Abouklaib
Capstone Reports
Cost overrun is one of the biggest issues in the construction sector, and cost certainty is one of the main aims of the public construction sector in Ireland. Studies have shown that multi-disciplinary collaboration will benefit a construction project throughout its lifecycle. BIM, Lean, and IPD are independent methodologies that encourage collaborative work, and there are existent effective synergies among these concepts. The synergetic innovative international strategies were utilised for delivering large complex projects successfully globally, and many authors have studied large complex public projects that have adopted innovative international project delivery strategies collaboratively and have shown that the cost …
Opportunities In The Irish Reinforced Concrete Industry For Lean And Bim Adoption, Bim Tudublin, Kieran Mcconnell
Opportunities In The Irish Reinforced Concrete Industry For Lean And Bim Adoption, Bim Tudublin, Kieran Mcconnell
Capstone Reports
The Irish Reinforced Concrete (RC) sector has yet to realise the full potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Lean construction. The positive impacts and benefits of both BIM and Lean in the wider Architecture, Engineering and Construction sector are widely recognised; many of these are transferable to the RC sector, but there is limited research and knowledge on practical transference, uses and advantages. This research aims to fill some of the existing knowledge gaps by examining BIM and Lean adoption and awareness in the Irish RC sector across sub-sectors, professions, and organisational levels, and by exploring opportunities for increasing …
Should Acoustic Simulation Technology Be Utilised In Architectural Practice? Does It Have The Potential For Bim Integration?, Bim Tudublin, Keith Harvey
Should Acoustic Simulation Technology Be Utilised In Architectural Practice? Does It Have The Potential For Bim Integration?, Bim Tudublin, Keith Harvey
Capstone Reports
The research presented in this paper, firstly, aims to convey the importance of our acoustic environment through focusing on the effects of undesirable acoustic conditions on cognitive abilities in spaces where cognitive performance is of the utmost concern, our learning environments. Secondly, it aims to investigate current state-of-the-art acoustic simulation methods, available platforms, and their levels of interoperability with architectural BIM authoring software. Structured interviews were carried out with 7 Irish architects and architectural technologists to determine if a disconnection between architectural design and acoustic performance exists and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of current workflows for acoustic performance …
The Ark And The Tent: Temple Symbolism In The Story Of Noah, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
The Ark And The Tent: Temple Symbolism In The Story Of Noah, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Jeffrey M. Bradshaw compares Moses’ tabernacle and Noah’s ark, and then identifies the story of Noah as a temple related drama, drawing of temple mysticism and symbols. After examining structural similarities between ark and tabernacle and bringing into the discussion further information about the Mesopotamian flood story, he shows how Noah’s ark is a beginning of a new creation, pointing out the central point of Day One in the Noah story. When Noah leaves the ark, they find themselves in a garden, not unlike the Garden of Eden in the way the Bible speaks about it. A covenant is established …

Hurricane Irma Induces Divergent Behavioral And Hormonal Impacts On An Urban And Forest Population Of Invasive Anolis Lizards: Evidence For An Urban Resilience Hypothesis, Haralambos Fokidis, Taylor Brock
Faculty Publications
Hurricanes can have both profound short-term effects on animal populations and serve as long-term drivers of evolutionary change. Animals inhabiting varying habitats may differ in their response to hurricane impacts. Increasing evidence sug- gests that animals from urban areas exhibit different behavioral and physiological traits compared to rural counterparts, in- cluding attenuated hormonal stress responses and a lowered propensity for flight behavior. A unique opportunity was pre- sented when Hurricane Irma hit Florida on 10 September 2017 and interrupted a study of invasive brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) at an urban and a forest. Using data collected before and after Hurricane …

Coming Home: An Exploratory Quantitative Study Of The Relationship Between Reentry Shock And Mindset, Julia L. Fagen
Coming Home: An Exploratory Quantitative Study Of The Relationship Between Reentry Shock And Mindset, Julia L. Fagen
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With a growing number of international secondary schools world-wide (International School Council, 2019) and a rise in the number of individuals repatriating to their home country after studying abroad (Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, 2018), there is a need for more information about how to support repatriates. This exploratory quantitative study investigated the correlation between reentry shock and mindset in individuals who attended an international primary and/or secondary international school in Taiwan, moved away from Taiwan, and then returned to Taiwan to work in the field of education. This study revealed a negative relationship between these …

Breaking The Rules [Of Summer], Ashley Kaye Dallacqua, Sara K. Parrish, Mindi Rhoades
2021 Faculty Bibliography
Shaun Tan’s picture book/app, Rules of Summer, challenges conceptions of literature and literacy for young people, placing visuals at the center of the narrative in dissonance with printed text. This article explores this nonlinear, yet complex text and reactions to it from preservice and practicing teachers. We explore possibilities for schools, particularly with considering intersections between art education and literacy. We believe teachers can use artful texts like Rules of Summer in interdisciplinary ways to challenge their students, and themselves, to break rules around instruction, literacy practices, art education, and the current testing culture. We find that this narrative invites …

You know things are going well when Bill Gates is talking up the potential of plant-based meat with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes. Gates even told Forbes that beyond Meat and Impossible Foods’ success has given him hope for solving meat’s climate impact.Other investors are equally excited. In just the first seven months of 2020, they invested about $1.5B in alternative protein startups (see chart below). The Good Food Institute now tracks 510 companies working on plant-based, cultivated, or fermented alternatives to animal proteins. Many of these companies are racing to make alternatives as cheap and tasty as animal …
The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta
The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta
Environmental Economics
In 2019, Her Majesty’s Treasury (UK) commissioned Sir Partha Dasgupta, an economist and Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University to produce an independent, global review on the Economics of Biodiversity. Sir Partha was assisted by a multi-disciplinary Advisory Panel that included representatives of public policy, science, economics and business. The Review argues that countries should de-emphasize GDP as an index of progress and instead should focus on a national Wealth measure that includes an accounting for Natural Capital. After World War II, when the world was very different from what it is now, Sir Partha argues the economic questions being faced …

The Impacts Of A Nature-Based Mentorship Program On Students’ Self-Regulation: Harnessing The Anticipation Effect, J. Gandenberger, E. Flynn, M. Mueller, K. N. Morris
One Health
Self-regulation is essential to youths’ long-term mental well-being and healthy functioning and positive anticipation of future events may support healthy emotional regulation. Green Chimneys, a school in New York that serves students with special education needs and psychosocial challenges, offers its students weekly one-on-one nature-based mentoring sessions with school staff. We used a modified version of the State Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (S-DERS) to explore how these sessions impacted students’ emotional regulation both before and after their sessions. Results indicated that students’ behavior may improve in the 1-4 hours prior to participation. Further research is needed to test these …

Herzog - Animal policy and attitudes
An artificial intelligence algorithm called Delphi that mimics how humans make ethical judgments has been developed by a team at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Delphi was tested on a variety of ethical issues involving human use of animals where she mimicked many of the inconsistencies found in surveys of human attitudes. For example, as with actual humans, Delphi concluded that animals had the same rights as humans but then concluded that it was acceptable for humans to kill and eat cows.
We Know Animals Have Personalities. Does That Make Them Persons?, Harold Herzog
We Know Animals Have Personalities. Does That Make Them Persons?, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Animal policy and attitudes
In 1990, there were no studies on animal personalities. In 2020, there were over 900 published studies on animal personality. It has been found that some species (e.g., dogs, chimpanzees and orcas) can also be distinguished on the basis of the Big Five personality characteristics reported in humans. The paper concludes that there are excellent arguments for granting some basic rights to some animal species but having a personality is not one of them.

Do Anxious Owners Raise More Anxious Dogs?, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Companion Animal Issues
Recent studies have reported similarities between the personalities of dog owners and their pets. The reasons for this relationship are unclear but several studies suggest the causal arrow points from owner to pet.
Genes May Have A Big Influence On Vegetarianism, Harold Herzog
Genes May Have A Big Influence On Vegetarianism, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Dietary Issues
A Dutch research project found that identical twins were more similar than fraternal twins in giving up meat. This suggests that one’s genetic make-up may play a role in whether one is a vegetarian or not. The genetic effect became less influential in males than in females as they grew older.

Review Of The Evidence Of Sentience In Cephalopod Molluscs And Decapod Crustaceans, Jonathan Birch, Charolotte Burn, Alexandra Schnell, Heather Browning, Andrew Crump
General - Animal Feeling
Birch and colleagues have developed an important and useful framework for evaluating the evidence for sentience – namely, the capacity to experience pain, distress and suffering, in cephalopod molluscs (cuttlefish, octopods and squid) and decapod crustaceans (including crabs, crayfish, lobsters, prawns, shrimps). Birch and colleagues develop eight criteria in their evaluation framework which are used to weigh the evidence from over 300 scientific publications. The report also investigates the potential welfare implications of current commercial practices on these species. The report concludes that cephalopods and decapod crustaceans are probably sentient.

Are Pets As Good For Us As We Think They Are? What Does The Science Really Say About The Impact Of Pets On Human Health?, Harold Herzog
Are Pets As Good For Us As We Think They Are? What Does The Science Really Say About The Impact Of Pets On Human Health?, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Companion Animals and Health
The “pet effect” is the idea that having a companion animal will improve one’s physical and mental health. However, numerous studies have not found this effect to be a real phenomenon with a recent study from Tufts University being the most recent. The reasons for the mismatch between what people believe about the health benefits of pets and the negative results from research projects are unclear.

Internal Medicine
When we arrived in Huntington, the physician shortage was so extreme that we, who had great medical connections, found it difficult to locate physicians who accepted new patients. We invited the first class of medical students, the Class of 1981, who began medical school in January 1978, their spouses, and all faculty and spouses to our home for an evening of fellowship and food (Appendix 1: The First Graduating Class, the Class of 1981). The first class included twenty-four students, and everyone invited fit in our house for the gathering. Within three years, the medical students and staff had grown …
