The Fourfold Route To Empirical Enlightenment Experimental Philosophy’S Adolescence And The Changing Body Of Work, Robert Barnard, Joseph Ulatowski, Jonathan M. Weinberg

Faculty and Student Publications

The time has come to consider whether experimental philosophy’s (“x-phi”) early arguments, debates, and conceptual frameworks, that may have worn well in its early days, fit with the diverse range of projects undertaken by experimental philosophers. Our aim is to propose a novel taxonomy for x-phi that identifies four paths from empirical findings to philosophical consequences, which we call the “fourfold route.” We show how this taxonomy can be fruitfully applied even at what one might have taken to be the furthest edges of possible applications of x-phi in metaphysics and formal philosophy. Ultimately, the fourfold route helps us understand …

The oceans’ uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) decreases seawater pH and alters the inorganic carbon speciation – summarized in the term ocean acidification (OA). Already today, coastal regions experience episodic pH events during which surface layer pH drops below values projected for the surface ocean at the end of the century. Future OA is expected to further enhance the intensity of these coastal extreme pH events. To evaluate the influence of such episodic OA events in coastal regions, we deployed eight pelagic mesocosms for 53 days in Raunefjord, Norway, and enclosed 56–61 m3 of local seawater …

If you walked through your local grocery or beauty store today, there is no doubt that you would be bombarded with thousands of different products. You may also observe that many labels accompanying these products utilize terms such as “organic,” “natural,” or “green” in their marketing efforts. Most consumers look to these labels and trust that the products are better for their health and the environment. In a recent study, over 80% of millennials believe that purchasing ecofriendly products not only improves their quality of life, but 75% of millennials are actively looking to make greener changes in their homes …

The Case Against Tax Subsidies In Innovation Policy, Charles J. Delmotte Jan 2021

The Case Against Tax Subsidies In Innovation Policy, Charles J. Delmotte

Florida State University Law Review

Until recently, intellectual property (IP) scholars agreed that patents were the prime innovation tool to aggregate decentralized information. This case for the property approach, which argues patents are appropriate when information about possible inventions and the social value of inventions are hidden, is now also under pressure in the literature. IP scholars argue that tax subsidies for firms that invest in research and development (R&D) replicate many of the merits of the patent system under conditions of asymmetric information. Based on developments in institutional economics, this Article shows that tax subsidies are not market-set incentives and are not optimal tools …

Algorithmic Fairness, Algorithmic Discrimination, Thomas B. Nachbar

Florida State University Law Review

There has been an explosion of concern about the use of computers to make decisions affecting humans, from hiring to lending approvals to setting prison terms. Many have pointed out that using computer programs to make these decisions may result in the propagation of biases or otherwise lead to undesirable outcomes. Many have called for increased transparency and others have called for algorithms to be tuned to produce more racially balanced outcomes. Attention to the problem is likely to grow as computers make increasingly important and sophisticated decisions in our daily lives. Drawing on both the computer science and legal …

Technology Or Taboo?: An Analysis Of Emerging Technology Weapons And Weapon Taboos, Mia R. Wilson

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Technology tends to evolve over time, leading over things to evolve with it. One example may be the evolution of weapons with technological advancement. When these weapons change, it changes how war is conducted. This paper seeks to delve into the specifics of this phenomena. With technological advancement, the world has seen new threats such as lethal autonomous weapons (LAWs) and cyber weapons. New weapons have been, at times, too threatening. They have created so much stigma around themselves the international community ultimately decided against their use. These weapons may then receive a weapon taboo, discouraging their use. This paper …

What Common Factors May Influence The Success Of Dental Implant?, Yehuda Taavar

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The aim of this study is to investigate the common factors that may influence the success of dental implants. Addressing these factors may potentially aid experts in the field in delivering dental implants without approaching or decreasing the number of failures. Smoking, diabetes, implant maintenance, age, and implant size have significantly influenced implant success. It is suggested that patients are advised to quit smoking at least one week before surgery to minimize risk factors. Inadequate glycemic control also contributes to periodontal destruction and is associated with the severity of peri-implant complications. However, if patients maintain good glycemic control, dental implants …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

One and a half years into the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 is still here to stay. Whilst rapid several effective COVID-19 vaccines have been developed and are being rolled out, the critical questions remain whether vaccines provide widespread protection against infection and reinfection, and what the duration of protection is. Community wide control cannot be obtained until almost everyone is immune. Vaccine production must be ramped up to cover the world population. The price of herd immunity through natural infection is high mortality in the elderly and morbidity in other age groups including children and Long-COVID. We must expect a new wave …

Ovine Johne’s disease (OJD) is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) and carries a potential zoonotic risk for humans. Selective breeding strategies for reduced OJD susceptibility would be welcome tools in disease eradication efforts, if available. The Toll-like receptor 2 gene (TLR2) plays an important signaling role in immune response to MAP, and missense variants are associated with mycobacterial infections in mammals. Our aim was to identify and evaluate ovine TLR2 missense variants for association with OJD in Turkish sheep. Eleven TLR2 missense variants and 17 haplotype configurations were identified in genomic sequences of 221 sheep from 61 globally …
