Cheap Labor And The Effects On The American Economy And Worker, Brian Proctor, Brian Proctor Jan 2021

Cheap Labor And The Effects On The American Economy And Worker, Brian Proctor, Brian Proctor

Integrated Studies

Abstract

This study shows how American companies have used cheap labor in the past and present to do smaller jobs or to make individual pieces or parts that were to be put together and used in larger products. This cheap labor came from both foreign and domestic sources. In recent times, however, these companies have picked up and moved their entire productions outside of the United States greatly impacting the American economy and workers. These moves have been called outsourcing or off-shoring and have played a major part in the decline of some of the larger manufacturing cities such as …

Understanding And Improving Coordination Efficiency In The Minimum Effort Game: Counterfactual- And Behavioral-Based Nudging And Cognitive Modeling, Alexander R. Hough Jan 2021

Understanding And Improving Coordination Efficiency In The Minimum Effort Game: Counterfactual- And Behavioral-Based Nudging And Cognitive Modeling, Alexander R. Hough

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Individuals often need to coordinate with others to pursue and achieve goals. However, individuals often fail to coordinate on any choice or on efficient (i.e., higher reward) choices. Researchers addressing coordination failure often used invasive methods ranging in complexity and generalizability with minimal success. There are also no clear measures for coordination behaviors. Here, I used a more parsimonious and generalizable method: Using counterfactuals (i.e., hypothetical outcomes had they or other players chosen differently) to nudge (i.e., indirectly guide and allow for free choice) individuals towards choosing options that are more likely to result in efficient coordination. I simulated a …

The Intersection Of Crude Palm Oil & Deforestation: A Sustainability Analysis, Amelia Olsen Jan 2021

The Intersection Of Crude Palm Oil & Deforestation: A Sustainability Analysis, Amelia Olsen

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

In recent years, palm oil has gained international attention as an efficient, versatile, and inexpensive oil, and is now an ingredient in 50% of items in the grocery store. As a result, there has been an increase in complaints regarding the environmental impact stemming from the production of palm oil, including those of deforestation and harmful emissions. In response to these complaints, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was created to certify palm oil that meets certain criteria, (including being produced without an element of deforestation) as sustainable. Now, the RSPO certifies over 3.09 million hectares of palm oil …

Fenamates As Potential Therapeutics For Neurodegenerative Disorders, Jaunetta Hill, Nasser H. Zawia

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Neurodegenerative disorders are desperately lacking treatment options. It is imperative that drug repurposing be considered in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. Fenamates have been studied for efficacy in treating several neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively present the past and current research on fenamates in the context of neurodegenerative diseases with a special emphasis on tolfenamic acid and Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, this review discusses the major molecular pathways modulated by fenamates.

Potentiation Of Recombinant Np And M1-Induced Cellular Immune Responses And Protection By Physical Radiofrequency Adjuvant, Yibo Li, Zhoufan Li, Yiwen Zhao, Xinyuan Chen

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Nucleoprotein (NP) and matrix protein 1 (M1) are highly conserved among influenza A viruses and have been attractive targets to develop vaccines to elicit cross-reactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Yet, external antigens are often presented on major histocompatibility complex class II molecules and elicit humoral immune responses. In this study, we present a physical radiofrequency adjuvant (RFA) to assist recombinant NP and M1 to elicit potent CTL responses. We found recombinant NP/M1 immunization in the presence of RFA could elicit potent anti-NP CTLs and confer significant protection against homologous viral challenges, while NP/M1 immunization alone failed to elicit significant CTL …

Hope, Hunger, And Spiritual Liberation In Joyce's Dubliners, David P. Rando Jan 2021

Hope, Hunger, And Spiritual Liberation In Joyce's Dubliners, David P. Rando

English Faculty Research

“Hope, Hunger, and Spiritual Liberation in Joyce’s Dubliners” challenges the consensus that Dubliners is best understood as an expression of paralysis or hopelessness. Seen through Ernst Bloch’s critical theory, hope emerges as a forward-looking process in Joyce’s stories, one wary of apotheosis and tied to historical conditions such as hunger. What emerges is a new way of regarding the political operation of Joyce’s texts as adaptive, anticipatory, and unfolding. While Joyce never underestimates the material and political resistances to hope posed by the poverty and hunger that his characters suffer under colonialism and capitalism—indeed, his texts invite readers to scrutinize …

Exposure To Toxic Chemicals In Consumer Products In The United States, Cadee Wambolt Jan 2021

Exposure To Toxic Chemicals In Consumer Products In The United States, Cadee Wambolt

Ballard Brief

Many of the consumer products sold in the United States contain toxic chemicals. This is due to a lack of testing and regulation. lack of knowledge of consumers, government-protected trade secrets. marketing and PR tactics, and a desire for cost efficiency and product effectiveness. Because of this, many Americans are frequently and unknowingly exposed to toxic chemicals that have been shown to cause various health issues such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, birth defects, infertility, and hormone imbalances, among other issues. These toxic chemicals have also been shown to contribute to environmental issues. One of the leading organizations combating this …

Affiliated Issue With 2020 College Art Association Annual Conference, ‘Flesh And Circuit: Rethinking Performance And Technology’ (Chicago, Il, Usa), Conor Mcgarrigle Dr., E.L. Putnam

Articles

The live, embodied, material, and interactive qualities of performance have made it a notable means of exploring the creative potential of technological engagement, acting as a critical vector for revealing and resisting the technological colonisation of everyday life. The innovative collaborations of Experiments in Art and Technology (EAT) during the 1960’s with artists such as Yvonne Rainer and Robert Rauschenberg, Stelarc’s extreme body modifications, Dumb Type’s intermedia performance, and Guillermo Gomez-Pena and La Pocha Nostra’s poetic and speculative imaginings, have mapped the advances in technology and opened new creative fields to explore embodiment. However, there are still some significant oversights …

Human-Ai Teaming For Dynamic Interpersonal Skill Training, Xavian Alexander Ogletree Jan 2021

Human-Ai Teaming For Dynamic Interpersonal Skill Training, Xavian Alexander Ogletree

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In almost every field, there is a need for strong interpersonal skills. This is especially true in fields such as medicine, psychology, and education. For instance, healthcare providers need to show understanding and compassion for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), or individuals with unique developmental or mental health needs. Improving interpersonal skills often requires first-person experience with expert evaluation and guidance to achieve proficiency. However, due to limited availability of assessment capabilities, professional standardized patients and instructional experts, students and professionals currently have inadequate opportunities for expert-guided training sessions. Therefore, this research aims to demonstrate leveraging …

Potential Drug Treatment For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Which Could Be Through Upregulation Of Lipin1, Rajsi Y. Thaker Jan 2021

Potential Drug Treatment For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Which Could Be Through Upregulation Of Lipin1, Rajsi Y. Thaker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder leading to progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to mutation in dystrophin gene, which is very important for maintaining muscle membrane integrity. Dystrophin is the largest gene in the human genome therefore more prone to mutation. There is currently no cure for DMD. Our lab recently found that Lipin1 deficient myofibers showed upregulation of necroptosis correlated with the loss of muscle membrane integrity. Our primary approach for ameliorating dystrophic phenotype in DMD is through reduction of necroptosis using drugs which can potentially upregulate Lipin1 expression. In this study, we identified two drugs …
