Ethnography: Building A Thriving Classroom Community In The Face Of A Pandemic, Joshua Timothy Jackson Jan 2021

Ethnography: Building A Thriving Classroom Community In The Face Of A Pandemic, Joshua Timothy Jackson

Claremont Graduate University School of Education Teacher Education

A dive into the ride of a first-year teacher, which was also taught an entire year virtually. An extremely intensive look into the skills needed to grow as a secondary school teacher, in a situation that has never been experienced before. This paper also explores the foundations and scaffolds a teacher needs in order to become both a critical and socially just educator for all students within their classroom. The aspect of community is felt heavily throughout this journey, and the idea that communities are the very keystone of every single classroom; student-to-teacher community, student-to-student community, and classroom-to-household community are …

In Community With Students As Changemakers, Robyn Orozco

Claremont Graduate University School of Education Teacher Education

The purpose of reflection is to analyze experiences in order to raise questions, decide what works best, and be in a constant state of learning and growing as a person. This ethnography is a written account of my journey as a first year teacher and social justice educator in which I share stories, artifacts, and ongoing reflection of myself and my teaching practice. Through this reflection, I explore my background and positionality, connections made with students, and sensemaking of various practices in my classroom. In addition, I describe our shared class experience of examining social issues and the power of …

Prolonged Environmental Enrichment Promotes Developmental Myelination., Evan Z Goldstein, Vera Pertsovskaya, Thomas A Forbes, Jeffrey L Dupree, Vittorio Gallo

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Postnatal neurodevelopment is profoundly influenced by environmental experiences. Environmental enrichment is a commonly used experimental paradigm that has uncovered numerous examples of experience-dependent plasticity in health and disease. However, the role of environmental enrichment in normal development, especially glial development, is largely unexplored. Oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming glia in the central nervous system, provide metabolic support to axons and establish efficient saltatory conduction by producing myelin. Indeed, alterations in myelin are strongly correlated with sensory, cognitive, and motor function. The timing of developmental myelination is uniquely positioned to be influenced by environmental stimuli, as peak myelination occurs postnatally and continues into …

In humans, mutations in the transcription factor encoding gene, FOXP2, are associated with language and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), the latter characterized by deficits in social interactions. However, little is known regarding the function of Foxp2 in male or female social behavior. Our previous studies in mice revealed high expression of Foxp2 within the medial subnucleus of the amygdala (MeA), a limbic brain region highly implicated in innate social behaviors such as mating, aggression, and parental care. Here, using a comprehensive panel of behavioral tests in male and female Foxp2 +/- heterozygous mice, we investigated the role Foxp2 plays …

Drinking Water Quality And Provision In Six Low-Income, Peri-Urban Communities Of Lusaka, Zambia, Kristen M. Reaver, Jonathan Levy, Imasiku Nyambe, M. Cameron Hay, Sam Mutiti, Rodwell Chandipo, Joseph Meiman

Faculty and Staff Works

Lusaka, Zambia, is a rapidly growing city located on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer that provides most of the city's drinking water. Over 65% of residents live in peri-urban communities with inadequate sanitation leading to widespread groundwater contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. To fill the water service gap, Water Trusts were created: public/private partnerships designed to provide clean water to peri-urban community residents. Water Trusts extract groundwater via boreholes, treat it with chlorine, and distribute it to residents via public kiosks. We investigated the efficacy of drinking water provision to residents in six of Lusaka's …

Atrial Fibrillation, Nicholas Anderson Jan 2021

Atrial Fibrillation, Nicholas Anderson

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most diagnosed cardiac arrhythmia that clinicians and patients should be educated on. Due to the increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs associated with AF, it is important to have a solid understanding of the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, underlying pathophysiology, significance of the pathophysiology, treatments, and nursing implications that are involved with this cardiac arrhythmia. One of the most significant complications due to AF is stroke, thus stroke prevention measures such as oral anticoagulation should be considered.

Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey Jan 2021

Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey

English Publications

When discussing the origins, rise, and contemporary legitimization of biofiction, Oscar Wilde is a crucial figure. This is not just because he authored one of the first and most important reflections about the aesthetic form, but also because he became the subject of many biofictions, most notably Desmond Hall's I Give You Oscar Wilde: A Biographical Novel {1965), Peter Ackroyd's The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983), Louis Edwards's Oscar Wilde Discovers America (2003), and Colm Toibin's The Master (2004). Some, of course, would question and challenge my decision to include Toibin's novel in this list, as many would say …

Re-Envisioning Caribbean Costa Rica: Chinese-West Indian Interaction In Limón During The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Benjamin N. Narváez

History Publications

While West Indians constituted a much larger immigrant group in the port of Limón, Costa Rica and its environs, Chinese also migrated there during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In hopes of maintaining their culture and in response to the prejudice they faced, both groups formed their own tightknit transnational subcommunities. Nevertheless, they also interacted with each other. These interactions ranged from tension and conflict on the one hand, to routine, peaceful interaction and even collaboration on the other. In particular, class differences and the marginalization these groups experienced combined to produce this complex relationship. Tension and conflict …

Student Publications

Maternal nutrition affects the development of the fetus and postnatal performance of the calf. Methionine may play a critical role in developmental programming and is likely deficient in beef cows fed low-quality forage. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of metabolizable methionine supply to lactating beef cows during the periconception period on performance of cows, calves, and subsequent offspring. This project involved two consecutive production cycles commencing at calving in which dietary treatments were fed to cows during the periconception period along with measurements on cows and initial calves in Production Cycle 1, and measurements on …

Metabolomic Shifts Associated With Heat Stress In Coral Holobionts, Amanda Williams, Eric N. Chiles, Dennis A. Conetta, Jananan S. Pathmanathan, Phillip A. Cleves, Hollie M. Putnam, Xiaoyang Su, Debashish Bhattacharya

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the response of the coral holobiont to environmental change is crucial to inform conservation efforts. The most pressing problem is “coral bleaching,” usually precipitated by prolonged thermal stress. We used untargeted, polar metabolite profiling to investigate the physiological response of the coral species Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta to heat stress. Our goal was to identify diagnostic markers present early in the bleaching response. From the untargeted UHPLC-MS data, a variety of co-regulated dipeptides were found that have the highest differential accumulation in both species. The structures of four dipeptides were determined and showed differential accumulation in symbiotic and …

William Penn’S Imperial Georgic And The Vernacular Landscapes Of Pennsylvania In Eighteenth-Century Quaker Journals, Jay David Miller Jan 2021

William Penn’S Imperial Georgic And The Vernacular Landscapes Of Pennsylvania In Eighteenth-Century Quaker Journals, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This essay analyzes changes in the way Quaker writers represented the landscape of Pennsylvania, particularly the economic features of its built environment, over time. I argue that the promotional writing of William Penn constituted an “official” represent at ion of the landscape, using the genre of imperial georgic to highlight the colony’s productive and lucrative potential for an audience of investors while minimizing the role of indentured servitude, African enslavement, and Indigenous dis-possession in the process of economic development. Eighteenth- century Quaker reformers, however, developed a more “vernacular” portrayal of the landscape that was attentive to the privations of those …

Exploring Living Conditions And Asthma Among Migrant Farmworkers, Jenelle Williams Jan 2021

Exploring Living Conditions And Asthma Among Migrant Farmworkers, Jenelle Williams

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Migrant farmworkers are exposed to many physical, chemical, and biological hazards that pose human health risks. Quality of housing is a major factor that contributes to asthma disparities around the world; however, no study to date has explored the factors associated with the high rates in this population. Poor housing conditions are associated with a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory infections and asthma. Addressing housing issues offers public health practitioners an opportunity to address an important social determinant of health. Using the Social Ecological Model, the objective of this quantitative, cross-sectional dissertation study is to examine the presence …

Hiv-1 Tat And Morphine Differentially Disrupt Pyramidal Cell Structure And Function And Spatial Learning In Hippocampal Area Ca1: Continuous Versus Interrupted Morphine Exposure, William D. Marks, Jason J. Paris, Aaron J. Barbour, Jean Moon

Faculty and Student Publications

About half the people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have neurocognitive deficits that often include memory impairment and hippocampal deficits, which can be exacerbated by opioid abuse. To explore the effects of opioids and HIV on hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron structure and function, we induced HIV-1 transactivator of transcription (Tat) expression in transgenic mice for 14 d and co-administered time-release morphine or vehicle subcutaneous implants during the final 5 d (days 9–14) to establish steady-state morphine levels. Morphine was withheld from some ex vivo slices during recordings to begin to assess the initial pharmacokinetic consequences of opioid withdrawal. Tat …
