Bap: A Critical Comparative Analysis Of The Understanding Of Sin In Thai Culture And In The Catechism Of The Catholic Church (Ccc), Mongkol Wongwai
Loyola Papers
The article presents an analysis of the Thai concept of bap vis-à-vis the Catholic doctrine of sin. It makes use not only of dictionaries and literary sources but also mines cultural expressions such as folk tales and popular songs as well as films, soaps, and television dramas. Beyond the attractiveness of its creative and quite novel methodology, however, the paper points out profound ways by which the intersection of the notions of bap and sin can mutually challenge and enrich each other, thus leading not only to a better understanding of transgression but even of God, humanity, and the world.

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes
Loyola Papers
This paper examines an important aspect to which the Pope dedicates the entire Chapter 6 of this landmark document: the formation of an authentic ecological spirituality and pedagogy to address the current global crisis. Unfortunately, thischapter is frequently neglected in discussions, perhaps not only because of its placement towards the end of the encyclical, but also because spirituality and pedagogy are often viewed as the exclusive realm of a few experts, resulting in a certain reticence to tackle them. Hence, this paper develops the notion of creatio continua as a practical summons to participate in the missio Dei. It then …

Prison Mental Health Programs: A Growing Need Within The American Correctional System, Justin Van Dunk
Prison Mental Health Programs: A Growing Need Within The American Correctional System, Justin Van Dunk
Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy
America’s correctional system is continuously presented with issues that require attention and immediate action. One of these areas deals with the mentally ill American prison population. It has been determined that roughly 60% of inmates have been diagnosed with a form of mental illness. With this problem within our correctional system, programs need to be created that specifically treat the mentally ill within these facilities. Such programs' end goal should be focused on aiding the mentally ill and reducing recidivism within this correction population. Throughout this paper, we will discuss specific implemented programs and whether these programs succeed in helping …

Criminalisation Without An Object: Critical Reflections On The Muslim Women (Protection Of Rights On Marriage) Act, 2019, Shraddha Chaudhary
Criminalisation Without An Object: Critical Reflections On The Muslim Women (Protection Of Rights On Marriage) Act, 2019, Shraddha Chaudhary
Socio-Legal Review
The invalidation of triple talaq by the Supreme Court of India triggered the enactment of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. The paper demonstrates the superfluous and arbitrary nature of the Act in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to strip triple talaq of its power to repudiate a marriage. Drawing from the rich and varied theories of criminal law in Anglo-American legal discourse, the paper argues that the criminalisation of triple talaq lacks theoretical foundation and is wholly unjustified. Finally, the paper sets the criminalisation of triple talaq within the context of the social and …

We have structured our response according to five questions arising from the commentaries: (i) What is sentience? (ii) Is sentience a necessary or sufficient condition for moral standing? (iii) What methods should guide comparative cognitive research in general, and specifically in studying invertebrates? (iv) How should we balance scientific uncertainty and moral risk? (v) What practical strategies can help reduce biases and morally dismissive attitudes toward invertebrates?

An Injectable Thermosensitive Hydrogel Potentially Used For Wound Dressing With Anti-Bacterial Properties, Yunxiu Qiu
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
In this project, an injectable hydrogel was prepared through polymer synthesis, and several properties were characterized. It showed thermosensitive property because of the existence of poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)[3], which made it injectable as PNIPAM-based hydrogels would gel at body temperature. Also, the introduction of dopamine and coated silver nanoparticles could provide anti-bacterial property which could potentially used for would dressing.

A steam train is chugging along down a country track. You are a passenger, watching red and orange clustered hills pass by; fall is already here. You start to daydream about the last time you took this trip, how the summer had just begun and how quickly it went. Suddenly, reality hits. You awake from your daydream when you glance up and see five people strapped to the train tracks ahead of you. You know there is not enough time for the train to brake. Luckily, you happen to be sitting right next to the emergency switch, which would …

A novel microsporidial disease was documented in two ornamental fish species, black tetra Gymnocorymbus ternetzi Boulenger 1895 and cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi Schultz 1956. The non-xenoma-forming microsporidium occurred diffusely in most internal organs and the gill, thus referring to the condition as tetra disseminated microsporidiosis (TDM). The occurrence of TDM in black tetra was associated with chronic mortality in a domestic farmed population, while the case in cardinal tetra occurred in moribund fish while in quarantine at a public aquarium. Histology showed that coelomic visceral organs were frequently necrotic and severely disrupted by extensive infiltrates of macrophages. Infected macrophages were …

Healthy brain function is marked by neuronal network dynamics at or near the critical phase, which separates regimes of instability and stasis. A failure to remain at this critical point can lead to neurological disorders such as epilepsy, which is associated with pathological synchronization of neuronal oscillations. Using full Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) simulations on a Small-World Network, we are able to generate synthetic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals with intervals corresponding to seizure (ictal) or non-seizure (interictal) states that can occur based on the hyperexcitability of the artificial neurons and the strength and topology of the synaptic connections between them. These interictal simulations …

The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO, https://hpo.jax.org) was launched in 2008 to provide a comprehensive logical standard to describe and computationally analyze phenotypic abnormalities found in human disease. The HPO is now a worldwide standard for phenotype exchange. The HPO has grown steadily since its inception due to considerable contributions from clinical experts and researchers from a diverse range of disciplines. Here, we present recent major extensions of the HPO for neurology, nephrology, immunology, pulmonology, newborn screening, and other areas. For example, the seizure subontology now reflects the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) guidelines and these enhancements have already shown clinical …

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder without a cure. Here we show that mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I is an important small molecule druggable target in AD. Partial inhibition of complex I triggers the AMP-activated protein kinase-dependent signaling network leading to neuroprotection in symptomatic APP/PS1 female mice, a translational model of AD. Treatment of symptomatic APP/PS1 mice with complex I inhibitor improved energy homeostasis, synaptic activity, long-term potentiation, dendritic spine maturation, cognitive function and proteostasis, and reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in brain and periphery, ultimately blocking the ongoing neurodegeneration. Therapeutic efficacy in vivo was monitored using translational …

Trudging Through The Brakes: Mapping River Cane (Arundinaria Gigantea (Walter) Muhl.) And Canebrake Habitat In 19th Century Arkansas, Patrick Solomon
Theses and Dissertations
River cane (A. gigantea) is one of three bamboos native to the North American continent but has been greatly diminished since European colonization. To explore this lost landscape, this paper applies an interdisciplinary approach to examine and interpret the pre-historic, historic, and current status of cane and canebrake habitat in Arkansas. Historic cane data has been collected and used to create an informed map of canebrake habitat in 19th century Arkansas. To examine references in more detail, cane points collected within the five study areas have been examined using a Geographic Information System. Maps of historic cane references have been …

Introduction Homeless youth are a vulnerable population. A volunteer clinic supported by medical students in northeastern Pennsylvania provides shelter and healthcare to adolescents seeking refuge. We set out to determine the immunization status of youth in the shelter and evaluate for associations of immunization deficiency with demographics or biopsychosocial factors. Methods After IRB approval, a retrospective cohort study was performed from existing clinical records at the shelter 2/2015-9/2019. Chart abstraction included variables such as demographics (including age, sex, and race/ethnicity), biopsychosocial factors (including childhood trauma/abuse history, substance abuse history, and sexual activity), and immunization history. Results A total of 440 …

North American Thoroughbred racing is conducted on three types of surfaces—dirt, turf, and synthetic. The tracks are oval, and races are run counterclockwise. The loading on right and left limbs is expected to differ as a function of turn radius, banking, surface, and gait asymmetry. Hind limbs and forelimbs also have different functions related to propulsion and turning, respectively. This study uses the Equine Injury Database for race starts from 1 January 2009 through 31 December 2014, to compare injury rates across participating North American racetracks. The data are limited to catastrophic injuries in which horses died or were euthanized …

The Gene Ontology Consortium (GOC) provides the most comprehensive resource currently available for computable knowledge regarding the functions of genes and gene products. Here, we report the advances of the consortium over the past two years. The new GO-CAM annotation framework was notably improved, and we formalized the model with a computational schema to check and validate the rapidly increasing repository of 2838 GO-CAMs. In addition, we describe the impacts of several collaborations to refine GO and report a 10% increase in the number of GO annotations, a 25% increase in annotated gene products, and over 9,400 new scientific articles …

Abstract: α-synuclein accumulation into dopaminergic neurons is a pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease. We previously demonstrated that fatty acid-binding protein 3 (FABP3) is critical for α-synuclein uptake and propagation to accumulate in dopaminergic neurons. FABP3 is abundant in dopaminergic neurons and interacts with dopamine D2 receptors, specifically the long type (D2L). Here, we investigated the importance of dopamine D2L receptors in the uptake of α-synuclein monomers and their fibrils. We employed mesencephalic neurons derived from dopamine D2L --/--, dopamine D2 receptor null (D2 null), FABP3--/--, and wild type C57BL6 mice, and analyzed the uptake ability of fluorescence-conjugated α-synuclein monomers and …

Functional traits, particularly those that impact fitness, can shape the ecological and evolutionary relationships among coexisting species of the same trophic level. Thus, examining these traits and properties of their distributions (underdispersion, overdispersion) within communities can provide insights into key ecological interactions (e.g., competition, facilitation) involved in community assembly. For instance, the distribution of floral colors in a community may reflect pollinator-mediated interactions between sympatric plant species, and the phylogenetic distribution of color can inform how evolutionary contingencies can continue to shape extant community assemblages. Additionally, the abundance and species richness of the local habitat may influence the type or …

Metabolic reprogramming and its molecular underpinnings are critical to unravel the duality of cancer cell function and chemo-resistance. Here, we use a constraints-based integrated approach to delineate the interplay between metabolism and epigenetics, hardwired in the genome, to shape temozolomide (TMZ) resistance. Differential metabolism was identified in response to TMZ at varying concentrations in both the resistant neurospheroidal (NSP) and the susceptible (U87MG) glioblastoma cell-lines. The genetic basis of this metabolic adaptation was characterized by whole exome sequencing that identified mutations in signaling pathway regulators of growth and energy metabolism. Remarkably, our integrated approach identified rewiring in glycolysis, TCA cycle, …
