Restoring Functional Mobility In A 51-Year-Old Male Post Intramedullary Limb Lengthening Surgery Following Helicopter Crash: A Case Report, Shawn Novella
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: The annual incidence of femoral shaft fractures is about 10 per 100,000. When these injuries prompt bone to be resected, limb lengthening surgery may be utilized. However, the surgery takes a toll on the patient’s postoperative functional mobility. There is limited information regarding specific home health rehabilitation programs post surgery. The purpose of the report was to investigate the effect of a comprehensive home health PT program on the patient’s LE functional mobility, post bilateral limb lengthening surgery. Case Description: The case report details a 51-year-old male patient’s traumatic bilateral femoral fractures, osteomyelitis, and intramedullary limb lengthening …

Life During COVID: Preserving Personal Pandemic Stories
I lost my mother during the covid pandemic. She was in a nursing home which was locked down for most of March-December. In late November, she contracted COVID-19 during an outbreak in the home. She passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of December 11, 2020. She was an incredible woman of compassion and grace and I am blessed to be her son. I've included a poem I've written called December Rain, along with a couple of photos.

Pivoting to remote work as female academics and to schooling our children from home as mothers in March 2020 marked a dramatic shift in how we enact our MotherScholar identities. This collaborative autoethnographic study employs a modification of interactive interviewing and photovoice to produce verbal and visual text of COVID-19 MotherScholar identity work for analysis. Thematic analysis results in themes of maternal interruptions, professional interruptions, maternal recognition, and professional recognition. Of note, our MotherScholar interactivity functioned as identity work as we sought and granted legitimacy to one another’s’ COVID-19 MotherScholar identities. Of particular concern to us is how institutions of …

La Escritura Como Instrumento De Resistencia Cultural Y Reivindicación De La Diferencia: Entrevista A Emma Pedreira, Estrella Cibreiro
Spanish Department Faculty Scholarship
Cash Transfers As A Response To Covid-19: A Randomized Experiment In Kenya, Wyatt Brooks, Kevin Donovan, Terence Johnson, Jackline Oluoch-Aridi
Cash Transfers As A Response To Covid-19: A Randomized Experiment In Kenya, Wyatt Brooks, Kevin Donovan, Terence Johnson, Jackline Oluoch-Aridi
Discussion Papers
We deliver an unconditional cash transfer equal to one month’s average profit to a randomly selected group of Kenyan female microenterprise owners in May 2020 at the outset of exponential growth in COVID-19 cases. Firm profit, inventory spending, and food expenditures increased relative to a control group. Entrepreneurs recovered about one third of the profit lost during the crisis. The transfers caused greater business activity by inducing previously closed businesses to re-open. PPE spending and precautionary management practices increase to mitigate this effect, but only among those who perceive major health risk from COVID-19. The results suggest cash transfers promoted …

Exploring The Market Potential For Aquaculture Grown Quahogs In The Gulf Of Maine, Andrea Hansen, Brady Orozco-Herman, Talia Sperduto
Community Engaged Research Reports
This report is a qualitative analysis of the viability of establishing a market for aquaculture-grown quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) in the state of Maine. Our work is in conjunction with Manomet and the University of Maine Orono and is funded by the National Sea Grant Office. The aim of the project is to explore the barriers and opportunities of establishing such a market for farmed quahogs as a livelihood diversification strategy for Maine fisherman and aquaculturists.
Our research on the possibility of a regional quahog market relies on interviews with seven shellfish managers and four shellfish dealers from across the eastern …

Laying The Groundwork For A Trail At Breton Preserve With Androscoggin Land Trust, Kelley Attenborough, Sarah Maccormick, Isabel Mohammadi-Hall
Community Engaged Research Reports
Public access to the coastal, mountainous and historic hotspots is one of the reasons Maine’s population is increasing. These natural areas are threatened by land turnover and human development, forcing government funded conservation programs, local land trusts, and nationwide privately held conservation groups to take action. Throughout cities in Maine, there is a push for more public outdoor areas providing further recreational opportunities to facilitate holistic and educated relationships with the land. For these reasons, the Androscoggin Land Trust (ALT) has identified a need for a multi-use trail along the Androscoggin River at the Breton Preserve in Lisbon, Maine. To …

Creating Opportunities For Urban Agriculture In Lewiston/Auburn, Lily Edelman-Gold, Meredith Melendy
Community Engaged Research Reports
The intersectional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis, as well as the heightened awareness of racism and racial disparities across the United States, all shed light on one specific commonality: food injustice. Through a food justice lens, these issues may be further explored and complicated as cities experience exacerbated inequities within food access and food security. These ongoing issues have further illuminated the barriers to achieving food justice, identifying a need for more accessible and affordable opportunities within cities’ food systems. One possible solution to overcome these barriers is the implementation of urban agriculture, which scholars have …

The Feasibility Of A Community Food Center In Downtown Lewiston, Tamsin Stringer, Kate Loughlin
Community Engaged Research Reports
This report provides insight into the feasibility and potential elements of a Community Food Center (CFC) within Downtown Lewiston, Maine in collaboration with St. Mary’s Nutrition Center. The feasibility of this project was assessed based on several benchmarks, which included the necessity of economic sustainability within the center and the need for expressed personal benefit in purchasing local and low-to-no-cost goods, depending on varying income levels. Survey responses and focus groups were conducted with a diverse group of residents from both Lewiston and Auburn. Focus within this study was on residents outside of the Tree-Streets area. The results of our …

A just transition to renewable energy requires accounting for the effects of offshore wind projects (OWPs) on the fishing industry. Research on the interaction of OWPs with coastal communities and fisheries in the United Kingdom and the United States offers insights into minimizing conflict and enhancing constructive engagement between fishers and wind energy developers. Recent innovations include earlier and more meaningful inclusion of fisheries representatives in planning and decision-making, involving fisheries liaisons in the process, and conducting more cumulative studies and taking collaborative approaches to considering the effects of OWP on fishing.

Do Greenhouse Gases Impact Our Respiratory System? A Study Of The Effect Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions On Respiratory Disease Related Mortality In Ireland, Anushree Priyadarshini, Christina Kenny
Articles
Respiratory-related deaths are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality every year in the developed world. Previous research outlines that greenhouse gas emission levels have a negative effect on respiratory health and can cause worsening of symptoms. This study examines the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on respiratory disease related mortality in Ireland from 2007-2017 using Statbank data from Central Statistics Office, Ireland. Analysis shows that over the last decade, while greenhouse gases emissions in Ireland have reduced by 1.1%, respiratory disease related mortality has increased on an average by 2.1%. Results indicate that greenhouse gas emis- sions …

Deep Learning For Screening Covid-19 Using Chest X-Ray Images, Sanhita Basu, Sushmita Mitra, Nilanjan Saha
Deep Learning For Screening Covid-19 Using Chest X-Ray Images, Sanhita Basu, Sushmita Mitra, Nilanjan Saha
ISI Best Publications
With the ever increasing demand for screening millions of prospective 'novel coronavirus' or COVID-19 cases, and due to the emergence of high false negatives in the commonly used PCR tests, the necessity for probing an alternative simple screening mechanism of COVID-19 using radiological images (like chest X-Rays) assumes importance. In this scenario, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) offer fast, automated, effective strategies to detect abnormalities and extract key features of the altered lung parenchyma, which may be related to specific signatures of the COVID-19 virus. However, the available COVID-19 datasets are inadequate to train deep neural networks. Therefore, …

Violet Is One Letter Off From Violent, Audrey E. Spina
Violet Is One Letter Off From Violent, Audrey E. Spina
Master’s Theses and Projects
The poems in this creative collection, Violet is one letter off from violent, aim to add to the critical conversation in contemporary poetry about violence, women’s anger, patriarchal oppression, and physical and sexual assault, specifically drawing on analyses from the poetry of Rachel McKibbens, Tarfia Faizullah, Emily Skaja, Erika L. Sánchez, Tracy K. Smith, Safiya Sinclair, and Paisley Rekdal. My myriad speakers, who take both first and third person points of narrative view, reclaim and reproduce their own stories in ways that are complex, vulnerable, and angry as a result of living under and through traumatic experiences in domestic and …

Processor Modules For The Classroom Development Of Physical Computers, Lakshmi Ongolu
Master’s Theses and Projects
Processors are present in almost all the electronic components available in the market now. As they perform trillions of operations per second and are complex internally. This project is to build building modules for students, who will be able to develop their own processor. The main idea is that this will help students to experience the detailed workflow of a processor and focus on design and development instead of spending time on wiring and soldering. Different components such as Program Counter, Instruction Register, Memory, Multiplexer, Adder and transceivers are designed and printed as individual modules on printed circuit boards (PCB’s). …

Racial Adultification And The American Criminal Justice System, Keshia Dauphin
Master’s Theses and Projects
African Americans are overrepresented in the criminal justice system and known to experience disadvantages in society because of their race, ethnicity and sometimes gender. With determination to understand the barriers that hinder African Americans from equal opportunities; this thesis explores the disparities against Black boys in the American criminal justice system. This thesis uses a qualitative study approach in which I analyze three historical cases that happened in different eras, George Stinney Jr. (1944), Central Park Five (1989); and Tamir Rice (2014). Each case will demonstrate the denial of Black childhood and Black boys being seen as adults, mistreated and …
