A Multimodal Analysis Of Bangladeshi Fairness Product Advertisements, Shushmita Hossain Khan
A Multimodal Analysis Of Bangladeshi Fairness Product Advertisements, Shushmita Hossain Khan
Student Works (2020-2029)
The notion of beauty is associated with fair skin tone in Bangladesh. Bangladeshis have varied skin tones although generally most of the people have a dark complexion. Fairness product advertisements tend to suggest that fair complexion is essential for marriage, successful career and promote that using their products can help women to achieve the perfect face, partner, and expected behavior from the society as well as acceptance from the opposite sex. This indicates that fair skin means superiority and beauty in Bangladeshi context. Although these advertisements have gone through some changes in last five years, within these, the advertisements still …

Fabrication Of High Pours Ti-6a1-4fe Alloy For Biomedical Application., Montasser Dewidar, Jae Lim
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In the present study, Ti-6A1-4fe alloy was developed as a cost effective option to replace the traditional Ti-6Al4V alloy in the manufacture of surgical implants because of its larger biocompatibility (free vanadium). This alloy was prepared using the ball milling technique. Novel Ti 6Al-4fe alloy foams with porosity of approximately 70% were fabricated by a space-holder and powder metallurgical process. Irregular NaCl powders with particle size ranging from 100 to 600 um were used as a space holder material. The NaCl in the green compact was removed in hot distilled water at 70°C for times ranging from 1 to 5 …

Surface technology provides an important and valuable insight into the practical and theoretical applications of a manufactured surface. Cutting conditions play an important role in assessment of functional performance for engineering surfaces. Also, there is an important relation between the surfaces geometry and the functional performance of the surface. The geometry of the surface has a large influences of the surface performance. Topography analysis is primarily concerned with describing a surface in terms of its features. Then the knowledge gained about the geometry of the surface is used to control the surface production process to predict the performance of the …

Augmentation Of Heat Transfer Characteristics For Flow Through Circular Tube By Radial Guide Vane Swirl Generators., Gamal Sultan
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The convective heat transfer coefficient for a uniform heat flux tube is improved experimentally by using a single twisted vanes turbulator. The effect of the twisted vane inserts on the heat transfer rate are studied experimentally. During this study, the operating parameters are Reynolds number (2747 6390), and local position of the swirl} element (S/L=0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0). The results demonstrated that the use of twisted vane swirl element inserts leads to a higher heat transfer coefficient rather than that of plain tube and the swirl element p < em>osition of 0.25 from tested tube inlet yields a better heat …

Retracted: Numerical Modeling Of An L-Shaped Very Stiff Concrete Retaining Wall., A. Badr, Y. Djerbib, S. Elbagalatyo
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A numerical model incorporated in finite element PLAXIS program is presented in this paper to simulate the behavior of an "L-shaped" very stiff reinforced concrete prototype wall. The proposed numerical model has been calibrated and validated experimental results conducted previously at Manchester University. Taking into account the centrifuge model dimensions and geometry with respect to the centrifuge scaling law, the loading conditions and sequences during the test, and by considering for the modeling of the soil the hardening soil model, the numerical results obtained in terms of pattern and magnitude of the wall displacements were very close to the experimentally …

Lnapl Leakage And Resulting Contaminant Transport In The Unsaturated And Saturated Zones., Khaled Abdel-Azeez, Ahmed Hassan, Mohsen Ezzeldin
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A multiphase flow and transport numerical model was developed to study the leakage of light non aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) into the vadose zone and the associated contamination of both the unsaturated and saturated zones. The model was used to provide a better tool for addressing the movement and spreading the NAPL phase and the resulting contamination in both the vadose zone and the saturated zone. In order to guide experimental design and field investigations, the model was used to evaluate the sensitivity of the results in various low and transport parameters. It was found that the NAPI, density and …

An Automated Essay Grading Framework Based On Neural Networks., A. Hassan, A. Riad, A. Shehab
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper presents a proposed framework depending on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) that enhances the process of assessing student's essays in order to save the line and cost of manual scoring of these essays. This framework consists of five phases and the UML model of that framework is defined. Also the activity diagrams of that system are explained. During the learning algorithm phase, the network trained on a set of pre-graded student responses by teachers and then a set of essays not used in the training are introduced to a 10 tie network to judge the essay. The proposed framework …

Floral Variation Across Three Varieties Of The Landscape-Dominant Tree Metrosideros Polymorpha (Myrtaceae): Insights From A Hawaii Island Common Garden, Elizabeth A. Stacy, Melissa A. Johnson
Life Sciences Faculty Research
Premise of research: Metrosideros polymorpha is a landscape-dominant tree species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Although the group is famous for its ecological amplitude and variation in vegetative characters, little attention has been paid to variation in its “shaving brush” flowers, which occur in inflorescences of diverse sizes and colors. We aimed to determine whether the floral variation observed in natural populations is heritable and how this variation is distributed across environments and varieties of the species. Methodology: We measured seven floral traits in 93 adult trees representing three varieties of M. polymorpha in a common garden on the island …
Reducing Patient Falls By Realigning Nursing Hours Per Patient Days, Hermes Vargas
Reducing Patient Falls By Realigning Nursing Hours Per Patient Days, Hermes Vargas
Student Scholarly Projects
Patient falls are the “second leading cause of unintentional injury death” (World Health Organization [WHO] (2018), para. 3) and increase healthcare costs by an estimated $13,806 per fall (Walsh et al., 2018). These fall-related costs translate to a potential savings of approximately $400,374 to the selected organization since the unit chosen for the practice change project experienced 29 falls in the fiscal year 2019 (C. Hernandez, personal communication, September 23, 2019).
The PICOT question that guided this project was: In a medical/surgical inpatient population in acute care (P) how does realigning the Nursing Hours per Patient Days (NHPPD) (I) compared …

Copyright © 2020 The Authors, In explaining extensive evidence for past liquid water, the debate on whether Mars was primarily warm and wet or cold and arid 4 billion years (Ga) ago has continued for decades. The Sun’s luminosity was ~30% lower 4 Ga ago; thus, most martian climate models struggle to elevate the mean surface temperature past the melting point of water. Basal melting of ice sheets may help resolve that paradox. We modeled the thermophysical evolution of ice and estimate the geothermal heat flux required to produce meltwater on a cold, arid Mars. We then analyzed geophysical and …

Adverse cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) causes structural and functional changes in the heart leading to heart failure. The initial post-MI pro-inflammatory response followed by reparative or anti-inflammatory response is essential for minimizing the myocardial damage, healing, and scar formation. Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) are recruited to the injured myocardium and are essential for cardiac repair as they can adopt both pro-inflammatory or reparative phenotypes to modulate inflammatory and reparative responses, respectively. Yes-associated protein (YAP) and transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) are the key mediators of the Hippo signaling pathway and are essential for cardiac regeneration and repair. …

Representational Learning Approach For Predicting Developer Expertise Using Eye Movements, Sumeet Maan
Representational Learning Approach For Predicting Developer Expertise Using Eye Movements, Sumeet Maan
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The thesis analyzes an existing eye-tracking dataset collected while software developers were solving bug fixing tasks in an open-source system. The analysis is performed using a representational learning approach namely, Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP). The novel aspect of the analysis is the introduction of a new feature engineering method based on the eye-tracking data. This is then used to predict developer expertise on the data. The dataset used in this thesis is inherently more complex because it is collected in a very dynamic environment i.e., the Eclipse IDE using an eye-tracking plugin, iTrace. Previous work in this area only worked on …

Three Decades Of Research On Recombinant Collagens: Reinventing The Wheel Or Developing New Biomedical Products?, Andrzej Fertala
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Collagens provide the building blocks for diverse tissues and organs. Furthermore, these proteins act as signaling molecules that control cell behavior during organ development, growth, and repair. Their long half-life, mechanical strength, ability to assemble into fibrils and networks, biocompatibility, and abundance from readily available discarded animal tissues make collagens an attractive material in biomedicine, drug and food industries, and cosmetic products. About three decades ago, pioneering experiments led to recombinant human collagens' expression, thereby initiating studies on the potential use of these proteins as substitutes for the animal-derived collagens. Since then, scientists have utilized various systems to produce native-like …

The adherence assessment based on the combination of nevirapine (NVP) and its two metabolites (2-hydroxynevirapine and 3-hydroxynevirapine) would more comprehensively and accurately reflect long-term adherence than that of a single prototype. This study aimed to develop a specific, sensitive and selective method for simultaneous detection of the three compounds in hair and explore whether there was consistency among the three compounds in assessing long-term adherence. Furthermore, 75 HIV-positive patients who were taking the NVP drug were randomly recruited and divided into two groups (high-and low-adherence group). All participants self-reported their days of oral drug administration per month and provided their …

Income In The Off-Season: Household Adaptation To Yearly Work Interruptions, John Coglianese, Brendan M. Price
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Joblessness is highly seasonal. To analyze how households adapt to seasonal joblessness, we introduce a measure of seasonal work interruptions premised on the idea that a seasonal worker will tend to exit employment around the same time each year. We show that an excess share of prime-age U.S. workers experience recurrent separations spaced exactly 12 months apart. These separations coincide with aggregate seasonal downturns and are concentrated in seasonally volatile industries. Examining workers most prone to seasonal work interruptions, we find that these workers incur large earnings losses during the off-season. Lost earnings are 1) driven mainly by repeated separations …
