Silverwing Dev. V. Nev. State Contractors Bd., 136 Nev. Adv. Op. 74 (Dec. 3, 2020), Yoosun Jun

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Nevada State Contractors Board filed a complaint against Silverwing Development’s multiple contracts entered for a project claiming the total contracted amount for the project exceeded Silverwing’s monetary license limit in violation of NRS 624.220(2). NRS 624.220(2) limits the monetary license amount a contractor can bid on “one or more construction contracts on a single construction site or subdivision site for a single client.” The Board fined Silverwing $1,000 per violation, and Silverwing petitioned for judicial review. The district court denied Silverwing’s petition, and Silverwing appealed. Silverwing argued the term “subdivision site” in the statute is not unconstitutionally vague. The Board …

Ethical Testing In The Real World: Evaluating Physical Testing Of Adversarial Machine Learning, Kendra Albert, Maggie Delano, Jonathon W. Penney, Afsaneh Rigot, Ram Shankar Siva Kumar

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper critically assesses the adequacy and representativeness of physical domain testing for various adversarial machine learning (ML) attacks against computer vision systems involving human subjects. Many papers that deploy such attacks characterize themselves as “real world.” Despite this framing, however, we found the physical or real-world testing conducted was minimal, provided few details about testing subjects and was often conducted as an afterthought or demonstration. Adversarial ML research without representative trials or testing is an ethical, scientific, and health/safety issue that can cause real harms. We introduce the problem and our methodology, and then critique the physical domain testing …

The WellStar Healthcare System provides world-class healthcare across 11 hospitals. One of those hospitals is Kennestone located in Marietta, GA. They are continuously implementing new technology to attend to their patients in the operation rooms (ORs). However, the hospital’s Sterile Processing Department has seen an increase of unused supplies being returned after surgeries are completed. This results in certain supplies not being placed back in inventory immediately or accounted for. Upon discovering these process inadequacies, WellStar requested a project group to analyze and present a solution for decreasing its rate of returned supplies, quantify the cost of the current processes, …

Senior Design Project For Engineers

This project was pursued to bring another possible solution to a major problem within the pilot training industry. When it comes to pilots training with aircraft, they must often use repurposed older aircraft to log their training hours. With few options when it comes to aircraft that are designed specifically for training, we have researched, modeled, and simulated tests for our own trainer jet to add to the market. The aircraft was designed to seat 4-8 people (1-2 for crew and 2-6 for passengers), weigh less than 10,000 lbs., have a range of about 1195.5 nautical miles, have a max …

Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato Dec 2020

Regulation Of Transposable Elements By Tumor Suppressor Protein 53, Andrew J. Rosato

Theses

Multiple transposable elements have been identified by colocalization analysis that display a strong predicted regulatory relationship with p53 associated peaks. RNA-Seq was used to identify differentially expressed transposable elements. ChIP-Seq was used to identify peaks representing transcription factor binding sites in p53 activated cells. The results of both experiments were then combined in a colocalization analysis identifying transposable element locations that were both differentially regulated and located near p53 associated peaks. The colocalization of ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq analyses allows for the verification of p53’s regulatory role in the expression of transposable elements across the genome. A Monte Carlo simulation was …

Understanding Caffeine Vs. Kids, Cindy Nelson, Rachel Mcmaster Dec 2020

Understanding Caffeine Vs. Kids, Cindy Nelson, Rachel Mcmaster

All Current Publications

Children enjoy numerous foods and drinks on a regular basis that contain caffeine: soda, chocolate candy, energy drinks, and so forth. In fact, almost 3 out of 4 children consume caffeine regularly (American Academy of Family Physicians, 2020). This is a concern because studies show caffeine can affect children and adults differently, and too much caffeine can have detrimental health effects on kids. This fact sheet defines caffeine, reviews its effects and risks, identifies popular foods containing caffeine, and how to reduce consumption of caffeine.

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis presents utilization of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for the assessment of highway pavements to gain a better understanding of this NDE method’s capabilities in terms of early detection of consolidation-caused air voids in brittle materials. The objectives are to first, determine the earliest time during the dormant, setting, and early hardening periods of concrete’s set that GPR can be used to detect shallow air voids. Secondly, the change in dielectric constant will be tracked over the first 24 hours of concrete setting in order to quantify the impact of the dielectric constant assumptions in early detection. Two different …

Population Characteristics And Movement Of Blue Catfish In The Kansas River, Quintin Dean Dec 2020

Population Characteristics And Movement Of Blue Catfish In The Kansas River, Quintin Dean

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus is a mobile, large-river species native to the Missouri River and its tributaries, including the Kansas River. Historical data regarding the Kansas River population is negligible, limiting managers’ ability to appropriately manage this population. Multiple anthropogenic barriers along the Kansas River create a gradient of connectivity within the Kansas River, and with the Missouri River, possibly limiting Blue Catfish movement. Additionally, the contribution of tributary-reservoir populations to the Kansas River remains unknown. My objectives were to: 1) describe population characteristics and 2) quantify stock contributions from the Missouri River and Kansas River tributary reservoirs to the …

Lateral Resistance Of 24-Inch Statically Loaded And 12.75-Inch Cyclically Loaded Pipe Piles Near A 20-Ft Mechanically Stabilized Earth (Mse) Wall, Addison Joseph Wilson Dec 2020

Lateral Resistance Of 24-Inch Statically Loaded And 12.75-Inch Cyclically Loaded Pipe Piles Near A 20-Ft Mechanically Stabilized Earth (Mse) Wall, Addison Joseph Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Installing load bearing piles within the reinforcement zone of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls is common practice in the construction industry. Bridge abutments are often constructed in this manner to adapt to increasing right-of-way constraints, and must be capable of supporting horizontal loads imposed by, traffic, earthquakes, and thermal expansion and contraction. Previous researchers have concluded that lateral pile resistance is reduced when pile are placed next to MSE walls but no design codes have been established to address this issue. Full –scale testing of statically applied lateral loads to four 24”x0.5” pipe piles, and cyclically applied lateral load …
