Creating Statistical Testing Tools In Digital Testing Environments: Eliminating Confirmation Bias And Improving Pedagogy In The Humanities Testing Lab At Byu, Robert Hatch Dec 2020

Creating Statistical Testing Tools In Digital Testing Environments: Eliminating Confirmation Bias And Improving Pedagogy In The Humanities Testing Lab At Byu, Robert Hatch

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Humanities Testing Lab at BYU is a computer testing environment for humanities students and professors. Statistics are useful in a pedagogical sense because they present unbiased information about the progress of the class. The Humanities Testing Lab did not previously have a statistical tool, making it the perfect place to monitor the change in teacher perspective when a statistical tool was introduced. In an effort to better the BYU Humanities Testing Lab, an ideal statistical tool was researched, created, and delivered to participating professors. Their interactions with the tool were measured through a set of before and after surveys. …

The Structure And Low-Barrier Methyl Torsion Of 3-Fluorotoluene, K. P.Rajappan Nair, Sven Herbers, Ha Vinh Lam Nguyen, Jens Uwe Grabow

Open Access archive

The rotational spectra of 3-fluorotoluene and its seven 13C isotopic species have been recorded at natural abundance in the frequency range from 4 to 26 GHz using a pulsed molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The molecular structure comprising bond lengths and angles as well as parameters describing the methyl torsion were determined with high accuracy. Due to the very low torsional barrier of 17 cm−1, the lowest torsional states of the vibrational ground state exhibited large splittings in the spectrum, which were modeled satisfactorily with a modified version of the program XIAM and the program aixPAM, both developed to …

Relationship Between Abortion Rates And Ethnicity, Ronald Foon, Nur Diyanah Ayub Mansul

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

This research paper will serve as the first study in analysing discrepancies in birth rates among women of different ethnic groups in Singapore. The objective of this study is to root out any inequalities and effectively promote access to better healthcare for all women in Singapore. Additionally, a quantitative study in the form of a survey is proposed in this paper to collect original data. This survey will be disseminated in abortion clinics following the principles of cluster sampling. A regression analysis will be conducted to identify the statistical significance and correlation of each independent variables including age, income level, …

Site Tolerance Of The Rada Intein, Chase Taul, Christopher Lennon Dr Dec 2020

Site Tolerance Of The Rada Intein, Chase Taul, Christopher Lennon Dr

Honors College Theses

Inteins (intervening proteins) invade genes at the DNA level and splice out at the protein level. Once thought of as only a parasitic type of a mobile genetic element, recent work suggests a mutualistic relationship has formed in some cases within bacterial and archaeal hosts. After translation, a precursor protein is formed with the intein between two exteins. The intein is catalytic and can excise itself out through protein splicing. Intein insertion is biased towards the active site of the protein and is thought to cause inactivation of the host protein prior to splicing. Intein splicing is responsive to a …

Congenital Nasal Pyriform Aperture Stenosis Repair: A Case Series And Discussion Of Postoperative Care, Harper L. Wilson, Nicholas Van Maele, Kenneth C. Iverson

Otolaryngology--Head & Neck Surgery Faculty Publications

Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS) is a rare condition related to holoprosencephaly in which bony overgrowth of the medial nasal process of the maxilla narrows the pyriform aperture. CNPAS presents in neonates with signs of upper airway obstruction ranging from mild to severe respiratory distress and failure to thrive. Surgical intervention is indicated after failed conservative measures and generally includes temporary stent placement. We report a series of 3 cases of CNPAS treated surgically, examine postoperative care recommendations in the literature, and present a comprehensive postoperative care regimen with a novel method to maintain stent patency.

Negative Emotions In Fieldwork: A Narrative Inquiry Of Three Efl Researchers’ Lived Experiences, Adilur Rahaman, Shuvo Saha Dec 2020

Negative Emotions In Fieldwork: A Narrative Inquiry Of Three Efl Researchers’ Lived Experiences, Adilur Rahaman, Shuvo Saha

The Qualitative Report

Through narrative inquiry this research depicts and interprets the negative emotions that three English as Foreign Language (EFL) researchers experienced in different research sites during their fieldwork. Narrative inquiry informs the design of this investigation as the approach is particularly useful for understanding lived experiences. The study draws on autobiographical as well as narrative data to report the negative emotions that evolve during English language education fieldwork, an aspect absent in the existing literature. Findings suggest that the researchers experienced a wide range of negative emotions namely ethical dilemma, anger, anxiety, guilt, and shame. These results carry implications for language …

Test Anxiety Among Foreign Language Learners: A Qualitative Study, Selami Aydin, Ferdane Denkci Akkaş, Tülin Türnük, Asiye Baştürk Beydilli, İlknur Saydam

The Qualitative Report

Test anxiety is a strong predictor of achievement in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning process and has considerable influences on proficiency in the target language. Research also has not reached a consensus on the sources and the effects of test anxiety. This study aims to examine the sources of test anxiety among foreign language learners, to find the effects of test anxiety on EFL learners, and explore the strategies used by learners to overcome test anxiety. The sample group of the study consisted of 57 students studying EFL at a preparatory school of a state university in Turkey. …

Educational Progress‐Time And The Proliferation Of Dual Enrollment, Brice Nordquist, Amy J. Lueck Dec 2020

Educational Progress‐Time And The Proliferation Of Dual Enrollment, Brice Nordquist, Amy J. Lueck

English

In this commentary, we use the occasion of the proliferation of dual enrollment to examine the discursive construction of difference between high school and college literacies, and its effects on teachers and students. This discursive divide has real, material consequences. It informs (and constrains) literacy practices and pedagogies, becomes a barrier to access (particularly when operationalized in testing procedures), contributes to dropout and attrition, exacerbates unequal power and resources in communities, and justifies hierarchical relations between high school and college faculty and staff. By deconstructing the definitions of high school and college and the metaphors of containment they rely on, …

To Lend Is To Love: The Benefits Of A Lending Library On Campus, Lucia Boulos Dec 2020

To Lend Is To Love: The Benefits Of A Lending Library On Campus, Lucia Boulos

Honors Projects

This project centers around the construction of a lending library for Bowling Green State University’s campus. It seeks to answer questions concerning the frequency of reading both academically and leisurely, the preference of printed texts over electronic texts, the financial toll of textbooks and other materials, and how to make resources more accessible for students and community members. The concept behind a lending library is to “take a book and leave a book.” Participants can choose to do both or one of those options. The final structure is installed by the Community Garden behind the Fine Arts building. The project …

Source Of Information: Between Domination And Threat To Impoverish Perspective Of Local Public, Efi Fadilah, Atwar Bajari, Asep Suryana, Nik Norma Nik Hasan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The use of information sources in the information gathering process for news media content is very crucial in the context of its role and function as an instrument in building citizen literacy. However, in cases where the local news media is relatively highly dependent on local government, many critical issues arise. Essentially, the relationship is symbiotic, but in reality, local news media is more dependent on local government. The local government almost functions as the backbone of local news media through its multiple roles; as the source of information, the source of income, and the main market for local media. …
