Computer users are often the last line of defense in computer security. However, with repeated exposures to system messages and computer security warnings, neural and behavioral responses show evidence of habituation. Habituation has been demonstrated at a neural level as repetition suppression where responses are attenuated with subsequent repetitions. In the brain, repetition suppression to visual stimuli has been demonstrated in multiple cortical areas, including the occipital lobe and medial temporal lobe. Prior research into the repetition suppression effect has generally focused on a single repetition and has not examined the pattern of signal suppression with repeated exposures. We used …

Development Of A Flow Control Valve Using Magnetorheological Fluid, Scott A. Bell
Development Of A Flow Control Valve Using Magnetorheological Fluid, Scott A. Bell
Theses
This research aims to develop and characterize the behavior of a newly ideated valve that actuates based on magnetorheological fluid (MRF) in a volume surrounding a flexible thin-walled tube. This valve had the goal of reducing the obstruction and complexities within the pathway of fluid flow when compared to a commercial valve. A decrease in the obstructions would increase the efficiency of the valve. An iterative design process was employed to develop this valve through multiple preliminary concepts and two physical iterations. The first iteration presented multiple areas for improvement, which led to the second design. The second design was …
Secure Outsourced Computation On Encrypted Data, Asma Aloufi
Secure Outsourced Computation On Encrypted Data, Asma Aloufi
Theses
Homomorphic encryption (HE) is a promising cryptographic technique that supports computations on encrypted data without requiring decryption first. This ability allows sensitive data, such as genomic, financial, or location data, to be outsourced for evaluation in a resourceful third-party such as the cloud without compromising data privacy. Basic homomorphic primitives support addition and multiplication on ciphertexts. These primitives can be utilized to represent essential computations, such as logic gates, which subsequently can support more complex functions. We propose the construction of efficient cryptographic protocols as building blocks (e.g., equality, comparison, and counting) that are commonly used in data analytics and …

Investigating Dose-Dependent, Multi-Generational, And Strain-Specific Effects Of 17Α-Ethynylestradiol Exposure In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Decatur Mitochondria Foster
Dissertations and Theses
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) pose a threat to biodiversity at the individual, population, and ecosystem level, as they can interfere with processes that are responsible for regulating metabolism, development, behavior, and reproduction in living organisms. 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen and EDC utilized in pharmaceutical and livestock industries, and contaminates waterways worldwide. This research explores the effects of dose-dependent and multi-generational exposure of EE2 in three strains of zebrafish. High dose (10-25 ng/L EE2) exposure led to complete reproductive failure, as well as significantly decreased survival and growth. A period in clean water (depuration) after exposure allowed for some …

Feedback Induced Magnetic Phases In Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates, Hilary M. Hurst, Shangjie Guo, I. B. Spielman
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Weak measurement in tandem with real-time feedback control is a new route toward engineering novel non-equilibrium quantum matter. Here we develop a theoretical toolbox for quantum feedback control of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) using backaction-limited weak measurements in conjunction with spatially resolved feedback. Feedback in the form of a single-particle potential can introduce effective interactions that enter into the stochastic equation governing system dynamics. The effective interactions are tunable and can be made analogous to Feshbach resonances -- spin-independent and spin-dependent -- but without changing atomic scattering parameters. Feedback cooling prevents runaway heating due to measurement backaction and we present …

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are promising candidates for high-temperature structural material applications. Oxidation is a major factor that must be accounted for when designing such materials and it is thus important to study the oxidation behavior of HEAs to enable the optimum design of next generation materials. In this study, the thermodynamic behavior of interstitial oxygen in a Mo-Nb-Ta-W high entropy alloy was explored beyond the dilute limit. This was accomplished by sampling configurations of the HEA and HEA-oxygen systems from an isothermal–isobaric ensemble using a series of first-principle-based Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that the interstitial oxygen had …

Flexible Pavement Components For Optimum Performance In Rutting And Fatigue., Mohamed Abdel-Motaleb
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Premature failure of flexible pavements has long been a problem in many Egyptians roads with the drastic increase in truck axle loads. To fully utilize each pavement material in an economic design, a pavement should generally have reasonably balanced design between the rutting and fatigue modes of distress. The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology for achieving a reasonable balance between fatigue and rutting lives of flexible pavements. The methodology is based on the damage analysis concept which is performed for both fatigue cracking and rutting on different pavement sections using KENLAYER program. The investigated pavement components …

Transmission Line Fault Identification Using Ann And Time-Domain Measurements At Local Bus., A. Elmitwally
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Among many applied techniques for overhead transmission line fault recognition, the artificial neural networks-aided schemes have demonstrated superior efficacy. This paper presents two methods based on time domain measurements at the local end of the transmission line to identify the single circuit line fault type for low impedance faults. The first deals with time samples of the current and voltage waveforms of the three phases during the fault. The second uses the measured mms values of currents and voltages. The latter can also determine the fault location on the line. It is also extended to produce the faulty circuit and …
