A cognitive intervention that may reduce weight and caloric intake is inhibitory control training (ICT; having individuals repeatedly withhold dominant responses to unhealthy food images). We conducted a randomized controlled trial where 100 individuals with overweight or obesity were assigned to complete a generic (n = 48) or food-specific ICT (n = 52) training four times per week for four weeks. Weight and caloric intake were ob- tained at baseline, four-weeks, and 12-weeks. Participants also completed high-calorie and neutral go/no-go tasks while N2 event-related potential (ERP) data, a neural indicator of inhibitory control, was measured at all visits. Results from …

Studies On Glass Fiber-Reinforced Poly(Ethylene-Grafted-Styrene)-Based Cation Exchange Membrane Composite, Di Huang, Zhichao Chen, Jiann-Yang Hwang
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
To improve interfacial adhesion between glass fiber (GF) and poly(ethylene-grafted-styrene)-based cation exchange membranes (CEM), GF was modified by four coupling agents: [3-(Methacryloxy)propyl] trimethoxy silane (3-MPS), 1,6-bis (trimethoxysilyl) hexane (1,6 bis), Poly(propylene-graft-maleic anhydride) (PP-g-MA) and Triethoxyvinylsilane (TES). The results indicated the addition of modified GF increased tensile strength, tensile modulus, storage modulus and interfacial adhesion of GF/CEM composite but degraded the strains. The composite with 3-MPS modified GF obtained superior mechanical properties and interfacial adhesion, whereas the modified effect of TES was inconspicuous. The addition of unmodified GF even had negative effects on GF/CEM mechanical properties. The field emission scanning electron …

Investigating Late Paleozoic Tectonic Deformation Of The Western Highland Rim, Tennessee, Tyler John Myrman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Western Highland Rim (WHR) of Tennessee is located between the Nashville Dome to the east and the Mississippi Embayment to the west. This region is situated inside the bend of the Appalachian-Ouachita orogen along the eastern margin of the Laurentian craton, making it a location of intrigue for structural analysis. Far-field and local stresses have deformed the WHR across multiple Eras. In the Paleozoic, the Appalachian (east of WHR) and Ouachita (south of WHR) orogenies were both thrusting onto the Laurentian craton. Mesoscale structures recorded in the WHR indicate shortening direction history of these tectonic stresses, how many pulses …

Decoding Perception Of Speech From Behavioral Responses Using Spatio-Temporal Cnns, Kazi Ashraf Moinuddin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Categorical perception (CP) of speech is a complex process reflecting individuals’ ability to perceive sound and is measured using response time (RT). The cognitive processes involved in mapping neural activities to behavioral response are stochastic and further compounded by individuality and variations. This thesis presents a data-driven approach and develops parameter optimized models to understand the relationship between cognitive events and behavioral response (e.g., RT). We introduce convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn the representation from EEG recordings. In addition, we develop parameter optimized and interpretable models in decoding CP using two representations: 1) spatial-spectral topomaps and 2) evoked response …

On The Arrangement Of Visual Features For Efficient And Accurate Prediction Using A Linear Model, Monika Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Assuming the brain is a prediction machine, we investigate the arrangement of 2D visual features (Gabor filters) such that visual prediction can be carried out efficiently. The contributions of this thesis are threefold: (1) we prove that a 1-mode tensor can be predicted from an n-mode and an (n-1)-mode tensors; (2) using a linear model to predict visual features at varying distances from a given location, we show that prediction error increases smoothly and monotonically with increase in distance and increase in degree of sparsity of the prediction model; (3) we show that the visual features can be arranged in …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a novel decoupling method of applying power dividers to isolation enhancement of multiple-input multiple-output antennas with wideband, dual-band, or adjacent-band operations. The decoupling structure consists of the power dividers, transmission lines, and reactive components. Three benchmarks are used to elaborate on the design procedure and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. Results show that this method offers good impedance matching and high port isolation at the designated frequencies.

Metarec: Meta-Learning Meets Recommendation Systems, James Le
Theses
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have recently received increasing attention as powerful modeling tools to improve the performance of recommendation systems. Meta-learning, on the other hand, is a paradigm that has re-surged in popularity within the broader machine learning community over the past several years. In this thesis, we will explore the intersection of these two domains and work on developing methods for integrating meta-learning to design more accurate and flexible recommendation systems.
In the present work, we propose a meta-learning framework for the design of collaborative filtering methods in recommendation systems, drawing from ideas, models, and solutions from modern approaches …
An Improved Foam Modeling Technique And Its Application To Petroleum Drilling And Production Practice, Yanfang Wang
An Improved Foam Modeling Technique And Its Application To Petroleum Drilling And Production Practice, Yanfang Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foam is one of the most common used multiphase fluid in Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). Because of its low density, high capacity of lifting and carrying cuttings, low cost and compatibility with formations, foam has become more superior than the conventional drilling mud when depleted reservoir pressure, severe lost circulation, or unstable borehole are encountered. In general, the success of foam applications rely on the understanding of the fundamentals of foam rheology in downhole conditions.
Foam rheology has been studied for decades. Conventional foam rheological models such as Power Law, Bingham Plastic, Herschel-Bulkley to explain foam …

Vessel Trajectory Prediction Using Historical Ais Data, Jagir Laxmichand Charla
Dissertations and Theses
Maritime vessel position coordinates are important information for maritime situational planning and organization. A better estimate of future locations of the maritime vessels, from their current locations, can help maritime authorities to make planned decisions, which can be helpful to avoid traffic congestion and longer waiting times. This thesis develops a method for estimating future locations of the vessels using their current and previous locations and other data.
The motivating scenario for this work is that of determining the future locations of the vessels based on their current location and previous locations for accurate modelling of underwater acoustic noise. As …

This paper discusses the academic agency of refugee-background individuals who have resettled to the United States of America and the responsibility of higher education to value refugee-background learners as knowledge creators. Contrary to deficit thinking that views learners as unable to succeed due to their refugee background, this study explores how their experiences demonstrate their multiple capacities to succeed in higher education. The essence of these experiences is presented using self-reflexive collaborative speaking and writing inquiry. Three main themes drawn from the results were the capacities of refugee-background learners to adapt cultures, maintain multiple social connections, and exercise agency.

Fourier-Plane Spot Array Generation Using Lon-Exchanged Diffraction Grating: Experimental And Theoretical Study., Ahmed Shaban Samara
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In This paper, we have employed a double-ion exchanged diffraction grating, to generate experimentally Fourier spot plane arrays. The grating-length-to-beam-width ratio (d/w0) is found to be an important parameter in determining device performance. With beam width 20μm (W0=20μm), center wavelength of λ=0.6328μm, and changing in interaction length (d) and incident angle several basic results are predicted. We compared our results with the numerical solution using fast Fourier transform beam propagation method (FFT. BPM) and there is a good agreement between them.
Improved Control Strategy For Three-Phase Ac Choppers Under Induction Motor Load., Ali Mohamad Eltamaly
Improved Control Strategy For Three-Phase Ac Choppers Under Induction Motor Load., Ali Mohamad Eltamaly
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper presents a modified control strategy for controlling three-phase ac chopper under induction motor load. This modified strategy is known as Extinction Angle Control (EAC). This new strategy is compared with the Modified Phase Angle Control (MPAC) and Symmetrical Angle Control (SAC) to demonstrate its superior performance. These strategies are based on varying the stator ac voltage to control the speed of a three-phase induction motor. The proposed strategy is characterized by a higher power factor and a better total harmonic distortion compared with the other two strategies over the normal operating arrangement. Performance evaluation of the motor under …

Fpga Based Speed Control Of Three-Phase Induction Motor Using Stator Voltage Regulator., Ali Mohamad Eltamaly
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In this paper a digital speed control strategy for three-phase induction motor is implemented. This strategy depends on varying the stator voltage to control the speed of the induction motor. The system consists of six bidirectional switches. The digital control strategy uses saw-tooth waveform with (wice the supply frequency as a control signal to be compared with triangular waveform as a carrier signal. The voltage output from a voltage regulator can be controlled by varying the voltage level of saw-tooth waveform The control strategy provides also soft starting for the induction motor, The soft starting is implemented by starting the …

Nonlinear Panel Flutter Analysis At High Supersonic Speed., S. Abou-Amer, A. Dahshan, M. El Nomrossy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Exterior panels forming the exterior skin of flight vehicles traveling through the atmosphere at high supersonic speeds are often susceptible to the occurrence of limit-cycle type self-excited vibrations called flutter. Panel flutter is resulting from the dynamic instability of the aerodynamic, inertia, and elastic forces of the system. The equations of motion for panel flutter are derived using Von Karman's large deflection plate theory and quasi-steady aerodynamic theory. The equations are given in terms of the displacement and are presented in non-dimensional form. Galerkins method is used to transform the system of nonlinear partial differential equations into a system of …
Solvent Extraction Of Zinc(Ii) And Manganese(Ii) With 5,10,15,20-Tetraphenyl-21h,23h-Porphine (Tpp) Through The Metal Exchange Reaction Of Lead(Ii)-Tpp., Seham Nagib
Mansoura Engineering Journal
An investigation was carried out on the extraction of aqueous Zn(II) and Mn(π) with a hydrophobic porphyrin (5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H porphine, TPP) through a metal exchange reaction of Pb(π)-TPP. The distribution ratios (D) of these metals were found to be independent of the Pb(π) concentration in the aqueous phase. Pb(π) in the aqueous phase acted as a catalyst which promoted the metal-TPP complexation.

Stripping Of Fe (Iii) From D2ehpa Using Sulphuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, And Reductive Stripping In Vacuum., Seham Nagib
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Whereas, Fe (III) is easily extracted using di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), it is hard to strip it from the organic phase. It is well known that Fe (II) is readily stripped from( D2EHPA), so a reduction of ferric to ferrous iron could be away to solve this problem. In this work, the conventional way of stripping using acidic solutions such as H2SO. and HCl has been studied. Fe (III) stripping was found to increase with increasing acid concentration. The optimum acid concentration required is 10 N and S N for H2SO, and HCT, respectively. Also, reductive stripping in vacuum …

Investigation Of Al26.5cu25fe12.5 Quasicrystalline Phase Formation By Rapid Solidification Followed By Mechanical Milling., A. Shamah, S. Ibrahim, F. Hanna, Y. Abbas, P. Gayed
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The formation of the quasicrystalline phase Al62.5 Cu25FC12.5, by twin rolls rapid solidification technique has been investigated. The obtained phases are cauterized by XRD, Differential Thermal Analysis and electrical resistivity measurements. The effect of milling on the sample produced by rapid solidification is also examined. A quenched sample, a quasicrystalline (i-phase) is present in a relatively high volume fraction, in addition to two other phases that are most likely Al2Cu to be phase and Al7Cu2Fe phase (-phase). The milled samples does not give a single quasicrystalline phase, but the milling tends to stabilize the pre- existed i-phase.

Progressive remodeling of the heart, resulting in cardiomyocyte (CM) loss and increased inflammation, fibrosis, and a progressive decrease in cardiac function, are hallmarks of myocardial infarction (MI)-induced heart failure. We show that MCB-613, a potent small molecule stimulator of steroid receptor coactivators (SRCs) attenuates pathological remodeling post-MI. MCB-613 decreases infarct size, apoptosis, hypertrophy, and fibrosis while maintaining significant cardiac function. MCB-613, when given within hours post MI, induces lasting protection from adverse remodeling concomitant with: 1) inhibition of macrophage inflammatory signaling and interleukin 1 (IL-1) signaling, which attenuates the acute inflammatory response, 2) attenuation of fibroblast differentiation, and 3) promotion …

Many urgent problems that societies currently face—from climate change to a global pandemic—require citizens to engage with scientific information as members of democratic societies as well as to solve problems in their personal lives. Most often, to solve their epistemic aims (aims directed at achieving knowledge and understanding) regarding such socio-scientific issues, individuals search for information online, where there exists a multitude of possibly relevant and highly interconnected sources of different perspectives, sometimes providing conflicting information. The paper provides a review of the literature aimed at identifying (a) constraints and affordances that scientific knowledge and the online information environment entail …
