Ponce De Leon's First Voyage And Discovery Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Ponce De Leon's First Voyage And Discovery Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Juan Ponce de Leon, after serving in the armies of Spain, embarked for the West Indies where he became active in the subjugation of the Indians, a service in which he was engaged many years. He was a soldier and led a military life until he was forty-five years of age or more. He appears in official civil life with his appointment as governor of the eastern part of Hispaniola (Haiti), known as the province of Higuey. Soon afterward he was appointed governor of the island of San Juan (now Porto Rico), which he had already partially explored and conquered …

History Of Juan Ponce De Leon's Voyages To Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
On that day between the 2nd and 8th of April, 1513, when Juan Ponce de Leon stepped from his landing boat upon the sandy shore of Florida he opened the positive history of the white man within the limits of the present United States. Since then, through the centuries, his name has been perpetuated by history and is better known today than any of the early explorers with the single exception of Columbus. But the circumstances of his discovery of Florida are seldom related with historical accuracy, while those of his second voyage to colonize Florida are scarcely known at …

(Poster) Astrobiologists Should Write Like Journalists And Talk Like Cavemen, Ryan Fortenberry
Society for Social and Conceptual Issues in Astrobiology (SSoCIA) Conference
We write our scientific papers incorrectly and give talks often poorly. This leads to misunderstandings of science, especially within astrobiology. Scientific papers should be written in the journalistic style of the inverted pyramid with the most important information given first and finer but overall less important details following from this. The lead (first sentence) is the only thing that we can guarantee a reader will actually absorb. Hence, sentence one should have the most important information. This is a natural way that humans intake information. Journalists figured this out centuries ago, and scientists should catch up. Additionally, a good scientific …

Implementing Strategic Support For Sexual Minority Youth And Exploring The Effects Of Social Connectedness, Dawn Whidden, Kelly Brown, J. Vince Nix
School Leadership Review
ABSTRACT
IMPLEMENTING STRATEGIC SUPPORT FOR SEXUAL MINORITY YOUTH AND EXPLORING THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS
Youth spend the majority of their time in schools which is considered one of the most influential environments (Roeser, Eccles, & Samroff, 2000). Students connected to their learning environments are healthier, happier and achieve higher academic success (Juvonen, 2006). Sexual minority youth (SMY), students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT+), encounter daily challenges (Craig & McInroy, 2013). The purpose of this research was to study the impact of social connectedness and its effects on sexual minority youth (SMY) and overall campus culture. …

Instructional Leadership Practices And School Leaders' Self-Efficacy, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer 4785659, Carter Akins, Antonio Gutierrez De Blume, Richard Cleveland, Summer Pannell
School Leadership Review
The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate instructional leadership practices and the degree to which these practices predict the leadership self-efficacy of school leaders while controlling for years of experience as a school leader. With educational reform focused on school accountability, principals must attend to tasks that lead to school improvement. Identifying such tasks as instructional leadership practices and gaining a more comprehensive understanding of instructional leadership practices through leadership self-efficacy may contribute to school improvement. The methodology utilized a survey and the participants were 100 principals and assistant principals of public schools in the southeastern United States, …

Redesign And Development Of The Superintendent Licensure Preparation Program For The 21st Century, Robert Thiede
School Leadership Review
The Ashland University's superintendent licensure program had not been revised and updated for the last several years. With all the educational reforms in the first part of this new millennium, there was a pressing need to redefine and develop the overall program and courses. An action plan was set up to carry out steps to redesign the program format, syllabi, assessments, course delivery modes, and overall course schedule. Through the collection and analyses of stakeholders' feedback, review of comparative universities' preparation programs, alignment of state and national standards with course content, and the investigation of current research of program development, …

Implementing Discipline Reform: One District’S Experience With Pbis, Catherine Robert Ed.D.
Implementing Discipline Reform: One District’S Experience With Pbis, Catherine Robert Ed.D.
School Leadership Review
This study examines the case of one large urban school district’s implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to review competing needs and challenges encountered over a four-year period. There are encouraging results supporting the finding of a successful PBIS implementation and plans for continued implementation of Tier I practices and expand Tier II supports. Reducing the continuing disparity between the percentages of African American and White students receiving disciplinary consequences remains a challenge for Middleton ISD. In addition, work remains to reduce the disproportionate number of students receiving special education services who receive higher levels of disciplinary consequences.

The Implementation Of A Regional Education Network Through The Application Of The Developmental Evaluation Process: A Case Study, Amy Jane Griffiths, John Brady
School Leadership Review
Abstract: One in three young adults with autism or developmental disability have never been employed within eight years of their leaving high school (Newman et al., 2011). These students graduate from schools and may then work with multiple services providers across agencies. Collaboration between these agencies is critical. This case study describes the successful efforts of a group of educational leaders, parents, individuals with disabilities, and service providers who came together to improve the transition outcomes of young adults with disabilities. The success of this large and complex effort was facilitated by the application of a developmental evaluation process which …

Teacher Retention In A Rural East Texas School District, Gary J. Miller
School Leadership Review
This qualitative study investigated what factors kept teachers committed to teaching in one rural east Texas school district despite the perceived educational inequalities of rural districts compared to suburban and urban districts. When it comes to teacher retention, rural school leaders cite school environment and community lifestyle compatibility as the primary reasons for staying. Despite the considerable number of rural school districts throughout the United States, research continues to largely ignore the unique relationships found in rural locales. Rural school districts offer many advantages over their suburban and urban counterparts; it is a matter of identifying what is important to …

Educational Leaders Can Lead The Way For Increased Academic Achievement For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Stephanie C. Holmes, Jennifer Butcher
School Leadership Review
The problem that drove this study was the increasing number of students with autism entering the school system, and the barriers often encountered for both academic and social inclusion for students on the autism spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder, as defined by diagnostic criteria, includes deficits in social-relational communication; social-communication deficits can lead to educational impacts and limit opportunities upon transitioning from the public-school system. The purpose of this study was to examine the barriers to inclusion, from the perspectives of key stakeholders to include Local Education Agency (LEA) representatives, general and special education teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists …

This study examines practices of principals working in high-performing, high-poverty schools with a high representation of students of color in south central Texas. This study explores how leaders build individual and organizational capacity in high-needs schools. Using a criterion sample, and a conceptual framework focused on leadership for learning, three principals were included in this study. Their schools each had 85% representation of students of color, 85% or more of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, and at least 85% of students demonstrating mastery on state assessments. Principals demonstrated that while it is paramount to set organizational structures and policies conducive …
Talk Or Walk: School Principals And Shared Instructional Leadership, Sheila Baker, John Decman, Jana M. Willis
Talk Or Walk: School Principals And Shared Instructional Leadership, Sheila Baker, John Decman, Jana M. Willis
School Leadership Review
Beginning in March of 2020, public school educators at all levels were thrown into a situation in which they were required to drastically alter pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning. The move from classroom-based instruction to a virtual platform, whether synchronous or not, was too often done on-the-fly and with mixed results. With the realization and acceptance, albeit grudgingly, that web-based, internet-based, and/or virtual platforms need to be greatly expanded to the population and may become the norm for public education, there clearly exists a need for an expanded definition of instructional leadership.
The purpose of this study is to …

Creating Stem Momentum: Culturally Relevant Leadership And Hispanic Girls In High School T- Stem Programs In The Southwest Border Region, Antoinette Howard, Pamela Gray, Kristin Kew
School Leadership Review
This qualitative multi-case research study identified culturally relevant leadership practices that influence the outreach, recruitment, and retention of Hispanic girls in Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (T-STEM) programs in a School District in the Southwest Border region. Educators have a social justice responsibility to challenge the inequitable social, cultural, and political constructs in their schools and districts and address the unique needs of students who represent underserved racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. Administrators in this study acknowledged the hegemonic structures and barriers they and their students faced and shared some of their strategies and ideologies for school improvement and …

Pandemic Policy Preparedness: Unintentional Student Discrimination In The Wake Of Covid-19, Jerry Burkett, Danielle Reynolds
Pandemic Policy Preparedness: Unintentional Student Discrimination In The Wake Of Covid-19, Jerry Burkett, Danielle Reynolds
School Leadership Review
Educational leadership requires a set of skills and practices that are shaped by professional ethics. Professional ethics are the dynamics of both personal and professional ethics and requires educational leaders to understand how these ethical codes drive interactions and decisions especially in difficult situations (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). Anderson (2014) argues that educational leaders may not have the deeper understanding of social justice necessary to “better scholarship, but also to better practice” (pp. x) due to the current expectations of leaders including increasing test scores and accountability ratings and addressing social and emotional learning.
Adding to the current expectations of …

N-Glycanase 1 (NGLY1) is a cytoplasmic deglycosylating enzyme. Loss-of-function mutations in the NGLY1 gene cause NGLY1 deficiency, which is characterized by developmental delay, seizures, and a lack of sweat and tears. To model the phenotypic variability observed among patients, we crossed a Drosophila model of NGLY1 deficiency onto a panel of genetically diverse strains. The resulting progeny showed a phenotypic spectrum from 0 to 100% lethality. Association analysis on the lethality phenotype, as well as an evolutionary rate covariation analysis, generated lists of modifying genes, providing insight into NGLY1 function and disease. The top association hit was Ncc69 (human NKCC1/2 …

In March 2020, our 31-bed geriatric medical unit was designated the first COVID-19 unit in a teaching hospital located in a New York City COVID-19 hot zone. At the time, little was known about SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it caused. We needed to find a way to keep them calm, assure their safety, and provide competent and compassionate patient care in a situation where best practices had not yet been established. The concepts from this article can be applied to provide support staff in any crisis. Providing a safety net for staff enables a focus on life-saving patient care without …

As early as 1534 an Ethiopian monk traveled to Wittenberg to get in touch with Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. The theological dialogue that resulted from this marked the beginning of a history of entanglement between Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and European Protestantism. The present work for the first time reveals the history of the diverse interactions between these previously separately examined variants of Christianity in the period from the 16th to the early 20th century and thus makes a fundamental contribution to the history of global Christianity. Methodically, the work ties in with the approach of the histoire croisée and …

In child welfare, the need to utilize meaningful data to ensure that the services provided are effective in supporting children and families represents a continuing challenge. There is a large volume of data from sources that are internal and external to child welfare agencies; and it increases almost exponentially on a regular basis. It is difficult for leaders and practitioners to quickly and meaningfully synthesize, make use of, and share new information with colleagues who need it to make sound decisions. Even when data is transformed into knowledge, challenges remain around the preferred method of ensuring information reaches the individuals …
