An Examination Of Motivation Types And Their Influence On English Proficiency For Current High School Students In South Korean, Euiyong Jung
An Examination Of Motivation Types And Their Influence On English Proficiency For Current High School Students In South Korean, Euiyong Jung
Theses and Dissertations
Despite huge investments in national English language policies, few South Koreans develop communicable English proficiency. Yet, English language proficiency for all secondary and college students continues to be the goal of these policies (Moodie & Nam, 2015; Ahn, 2015). One of the fundamental reasons for the lack of communicable English proficiency was based on the social phenomenon, called 'hakbuljueui', or academic elitism, in Korea (Kim. T.-Y., 2006) whereby students seem to be instrumentally motivated to learn English only to pass the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), and gain admission to elite Universities (Kim, T.-Y., 2006; Kim, K., 2016). The current …
Root Cause Analysis And Classification Of Single Point Failures In Designs Applying Triple Modular Redundancy In Sram Fpgas, James D. Swift
Root Cause Analysis And Classification Of Single Point Failures In Designs Applying Triple Modular Redundancy In Sram Fpgas, James D. Swift
Theses and Dissertations
Radiation effects encountered in space or aviation environments can affect the configuration bits in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) causing errors in FPGA output. One method of increasing FPGA reliability in radiation environments includes adding redundant logic to mask errors and allow time for repair. Despite the redundancy added with triple modular redundancy (TMR) and configuration scrubbing there exist some configuration bits that individually affect multiple TMR domains causing errors in FPGA output. A new tool called DeBit is introduced that identifies hardware resources associated with a single bit failure. This tool identifies a novel failure mode involving global routing …
The Use Of The Dea Method To Measure The Efficiency Of High Schools In Szczecin, Łukasz Brzezicki
The Use Of The Dea Method To Measure The Efficiency Of High Schools In Szczecin, Łukasz Brzezicki
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
The article measures the efficiency of 19 high schools in Szczecin in 2018 using two DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) models focused on results. The Cross Efficiency model (CE) and Game Cross Efficiency model (GCE) were used to estimate cross-flow efficiency. The technical efficiency of high schools was analysed in terms of quantity (number of students) and quality (education rankings). Depending on the empirical model chosen, the number of students, graduates or ranking index and the average value of high schools baccalaureate were assumed as the results. In both cases, the number of pedagogical employees was taken into account for the …

Analysis Of Pollution Emission Of The Energy-Industrial Sector With Use The Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process And Topsis Method, Dominika Siwiec, Andrzej Pacana
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Greenhouse gas emissions (in it CO2), mainly with reference to the energy and industrial sector, generate negative changes in the natural environment. Therefore, to make effective actions in order to reduce this emission, it is important to analyze them properly. Therefore, the aim of the article was to propose using a technique to analyze the emissions of pollutants, included at the same time the size and harmfulness of emissions produced. This technique was a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) and TOPSIS method (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution). The proposed technique was …
Economic Value Of Preemergence Als Herbicides In Soybeans, Kara Koester
Economic Value Of Preemergence Als Herbicides In Soybeans, Kara Koester
Research Papers
One of the pressing issues in university and industry weed management programs is herbicide resistance. Growers across the Midwest are facing weeds that are impacting yield and evolving resistance to multiple sites of action groups such as EPSP Synthase Inhibitors (5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate), PPO inhibitors (protoporphyrinogen oxidase) , and HPPD inhibitors (4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase). Due to competitive weed infestations and potential resistance, it can be very costly and difficult to select an effective herbicide program for growers. Data was collected by Kara Koester at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Research Center in Belleville, Illinois during the 2019 growing season. A regression model was …

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Background: Female permanent contraception is a cost-effective contraceptive method that can help clients with the desire to limit childbearing achieve their reproductive intention. However, despite its benefits, the use of FPC remains low in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and limited studies have examined the correlates of its uptake. In this study, we assessed the individual- and country-level factors associated with the use of FPC among married or in-union women using modern contraceptive methods to limit childbearing in SSA. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis of individual- and country-level data obtained from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program and …
Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold
Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
Despite the importance of historical and contemporary migration to the American Jewish community, popular awareness of the diversity and complexity of the American Jewish migration legacy is limited and largely focused upon Yiddish-speaking Jews who left the Pale of Settlement in Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1920 to settle in eastern and midwestern cities.
Wandering Jews provides readers with a broader understanding of the Jewish experience of migration in the United States and elsewhere. It describes the record of a wide variety of Jewish migrant groups, including those encountering different locations of settlement, historical periods, and facets of the migration …

Coding Discourse Using Distributed Communicative Principles, Andrea Polin
Honors Scholar Theses
Purpose: Research has shown the positive influence of enriched environments on neuroplasticity outcomes for brain-damaged rodents. It is possible that the successful rehabilitation of adults with aphasia following a stroke requires a rich communicative environment. It has been posited that a rich communication environment is one that makes use of the distributed communication principles salience, flexibility, multiplicity, positivity, success, and flow as described by Hengst et al. (2019). The present study examines whether these principles are indeed meaningful in the context of the home environment for people with aphasia.
Methods: Conversations of four participants (two with aphasia and …

Depression is a debilitating disorder that is accompanied by a variety of motivational symptoms, many of which are only minimally treated by common antidepressants. Not much is known about the underlying brain activity that is associated with these symptoms. This study utilized several different techniques to investigate the neural processes related to an animal model of depression and the motivational symptoms that accompany the disorder. Progressive ratio (PROG) tasks have been used to assess animals’ willingness to exert high levels of work to obtain highly valued reinforcers. In this experiment, a novel version of the PROG schedule was developed to …
Language Abilities As A Function Of Lateralization Of Language-Specific Brain Networks, Jacey Anderson
Language Abilities As A Function Of Lateralization Of Language-Specific Brain Networks, Jacey Anderson
Honors Scholar Theses
The strength of hemispheric lateralization appears to be a good predictor of language abilities in children with developmental language impairments. Studies of healthy adults, in contrast, have generally failed to identify any association between degree of lateralization and language abilities, perhaps due to limited sensitivity to individual differences in standardized language assessments. This study used fMRI to measure the lateralization of functional task-engaged language networks in 25 healthy right-handed adults. Linear regressions examined lateralization indices (LI) of language activation in inferior temporal, superior temporal, and frontal brain networks, as a function of syntactic complexity (via story retelling), a grammaticality judgment …
Use Of Food Waste Activated Carbons For Wastewater Treatment, Abigale Monasterial
Use Of Food Waste Activated Carbons For Wastewater Treatment, Abigale Monasterial
Honors Scholar Theses
Activated carbons are often used to remove phenol from wastewater. However, they are usually derived from expendable resources, such as coal and have high regeneration costs. In this work, the adsorption of phenol on activated carbon derived from food waste was studied to understand its kinetics, determine its maximum adsorption capacity, and compare it to commercial activated carbons. Adsorption experiments were performed at 298 K for 48 hours at various pHs and initial phenol concentrations. The adsorption data was then fit to the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion models to understand the kinetics and to the Langmuir and …

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals 2017 published by the International Literacy Association provide the basis for high-quality literacy teacher preparation. This study used qualitative survey responses to explore the literacy practices that teacher educators use to promote understandings among preservice teachers for each grade-level band (i.e., Pre-K/Primary, Elementary/Intermediate, Middle/High School). The researchers used conceptualizations of teacher knowledge as a theoretical lens to better understand reported preparation practices. Data analysis revealed three themes: Teacher Educator Pedagogy, Course Content, Student and Program Expectations. Researchers posit that teacher educators do not evenly focus on all components of literacy and …

Optimal Order Assignment With Minimum Wage Consideration (Ooamwc), Hakem Alazmi
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
While the application of crowdsourcing has increased over the years, the technology experiences various issues during implementation. Examples of some of the issues that affect crowdsourcing include task assignment, profit maximizations, as well as time window issues. In some instances addressing some of the issues results in the other issues being overlooked. An example is when assigning tasks to workers, the profits of the workers might not be considered and this ends up affecting the profit maximization aspect. Various algorithms have been proposed to address the task assignment, profit maximizations, and time window issues. However, these algorithms address the issues …

Uncalibrated Chronotypes: Circadian Clocks In The Wake Of Covid-19, Nicolas Nelson, Zachary Highley-Gergel, Nicole Simone, Nikolaos Mouchtouris, Adam Dicker
Phase 1
Background: All life is attuned to Earth’s light–dark cycle. In humans, the hypothalamus calibrates the body to circadian cycles of homeostatic activity. The mechanism responsible may run shorter or longer than 24 hours, which is thought to be the basis of chronotype—an intrinsic preference for mornings or evenings. Circadian rhythms can be recalibrated by environmental cues (lighting, temperature, mealtimes) to keep the body aligned with societal time; however, chronic disruptions produce a range of adverse cognitive effects. Early COVID-19 stay-at-home conditions were unique for students because their cues no longer adhered to strict scheduling. Our objective was to determine how …
