The Effects Of Service-Learning On The Moral Development Of College Students, Mike Coquyt
The Effects Of Service-Learning On The Moral Development Of College Students, Mike Coquyt
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning Infographics
In the last few years, several national reports on higher education have called for colleges and universities to take a more central role in providing moral and democratic education to college students. These developments suggest a renewed interest in collegiate goals that go beyond those that benefit the individual, continuing an emphasis in addressing the moral dimension of higher education that has existed for centuries. Courses with a service-learning component can be a powerful instrument for moral transformation. Working within Kohlberg’s Moral Development Theory, this 16-week quasi-experimental case study investigated the extent to which service-learning advances moral development (movement from …
Full-Service Community School Intervention: Case Study Of Somali Parent-School Engagement Within A Rural Midwestern School District, Anne Leland
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning Infographics
The purpose of this three-stage qualitative phenomenology case study was to characterize Somali refugee parents’ understanding of their role in school-parent relationships and investigate the impact of a research-based parent involvement intervention model adapted for use with this study. Research questions included: 1) What are Somali refugee parents’ understanding, perceptions, and expectations of school parent involvement; and 2) Did the adapted training intervention, designed to enhance school-parent relationships and parent engagement behaviors among Somali refugee parents, succeed? Following an initial interview stage, Epstein’s School-Family-Community Partnership Model (2019) was adapted and used to design a training intervention that was delivered as …

Enhancement Of Photocatalytic Effect With Surface Roughness In Photocatalytic Reactors, Dharendra Yogi Goswami, Elias K. Stefanakos, Yangyang Zhang
USF Patents
Photocatalysis is a promising technique for remediation of indoor air pollution. The present invention focuses on the enhancement of the effectiveness of the photocatalytic process by the introduction of artificial roughness on the interior reactor surface. Artificial roughness elements on the catalytic surface enhance the turbulence intensity close to the catalytic surface. The enhanced turbulence intensity translates to an increase in the mass transfer of airborne contaminants to the catalyst surface, improving the efficiency of photocatalysis.

Ketone supplementation, such as through use of precursors of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and acetoacetate (AcAc), increased blood levels of ketone bodies, increases blood flow and wound closure in ischemic young and aged fisher rats significantly earlier compared to standard diet in aged rats. In vitro experiments with ketone bodies demonstrate decreased mitochondrial and cytosolic ROS in young and aged primary human dermal fibroblasts (PHDF). Ketone bodies increased migration in young and aged PHDFs.
Biomimetic Transfemoral Knee With Gear Mesh Locking Mechanism, Tyagi Ramakrishnan, Kyle B. Reed
Biomimetic Transfemoral Knee With Gear Mesh Locking Mechanism, Tyagi Ramakrishnan, Kyle B. Reed
USF Patents
A prosthetic knee having a passive knee locking mechanism that uses the same four-bar mechanics found in a natural knee. The flexible four-bar mechanism guides the motion of the knee, aids in the return of the knee from full flexion to extension, and connects a femoral gear to a tibial gear. The gears have a circular radius and are connected using parallel links to keep the femur and tibia together when the knee is active. The knee stays locked throughout the stance phase. At toe off, no weight is applied on the prosthetic knee allowing the knee to flex. The …

The Decision Maker: Understanding The Role Of Ifrd1 In Urothelial Plasticity And Regeneration, Bisiayo Erionmwon Fashemi
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The bladder urothelium forms a highly specialized watertight barrier to urinary wastes. The urothelium offers an unusual example of tissue regeneration: although urothelial cells do not rapidly turn over under physiological conditions, they have an impressive capacity to regenerate tissue upon injury. Even more remarkable, depending on the modality of injury (sterile, infectious) there appear to be two distinctive modes of urothelial regeneration. We have previously shown that in response to a urinary tract infection (UTI), the urothelial stem cell niche becomes activated and induces rapid restoration of the urothelium, whereas, regeneration following sterile injury does not involve stem cell …

Inter-Cross De-Modulated Refractive Index And Temperature Sensor By An Etched Multi-Core Fiber Of A Mzi Structure, Farhan Mumtaz, Yutang Dai, Muhammad Aqueel Ashraf
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a relative sensitivity of in-fiber inter-cross demodulation of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on an etched multi-core fiber (eMCF). The sensor can measure the external refractive index (RI) and temperature with a large fringe visibility of 15 dB. It is tuned using a simple technique of slow chemical etching. When the outer cores of MCF will be exposed to the surrounding, a large difference of relative effective RI is observed, which enhances the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor's wavelength and intensity responses have displayed that it can function with three different inter-cross-demodulation phenomena. A superior RI sensitivity …

The Genetic Influence On Subjective Well-Being: A Review Of The Current Knowledge On The Role Of Genetics On Our Sense Of Subjective Well-Being And The Implications It Has For Future Research In Improving Well-Being At Both A Population And Individual Level., Abhishek Gupta
Honors Scholar Theses
This thesis project explores the genetic underpinnings of one of the most cherished attributes in the world, well-being.1 Specifically, it attempts to understand the influence of the genome on subjective, or experienced, well-being. An investigation was conducted into current literature concerning both the structure of measurement devices of well-being as well as association studies to determine the scope of the correlation that exists between the genome and well-being and identify genetic findings of interest. Ultimately, being able to provide evidence of causality between the genome and sense of well-being at this iteration of well-being and genome research is limited, …

No targeted therapies exist to counteract Hyperoxia (HO)-induced Acute Lung Injury (HALI). We previously found that HO downregulates alveolar K2P2.1 (TREK-1) K+ channels, which results in worsening lung injury. This decrease in TREK-1 levels leaves a subset of channels amendable to pharmacological intervention. Therefore, we hypothesized that TREK-1 activation protects against HALI. We treated HO-exposed mice and primary alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) with the novel TREK-1 activators ML335 and BL1249, and quantified physiological, histological, and biochemical lung injury markers. We determined the effects of these drugs on epithelial TREK-1 currents, plasma membrane potential (Em), and intracellular Ca …

In the ancient world, the Greeks believed that all great insights came from one of nine muses, divine sisters who brought inspiration to mere mortals. In the modern world, few people still believe in the muses, but we all still love to hear stories of sudden inspiration. Like Newton and the apple, or Archimedes and the bathtub (both another type of myth), we’re eager to hear and to share stories about flashes of insight. But what does it take to be actually creative? How to have such a flash insight? Turns out, there is real science behind "aha moments." We …

Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention For Emergency Department Patients Pending Psychiatric Hospitalization, Colten Wayne Larsen
Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention For Emergency Department Patients Pending Psychiatric Hospitalization, Colten Wayne Larsen
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Emergency departments (EDs) are often the first access point to services for suicidal patients (Miller et al., 2017) and assessment of risk. Suicide has become the second-most common cause of death for Americans, yet those at the most risk often have limited access to appropriate care. In addition, suicidal patients spend more time in the ED than those with other presenting problems. Compounding the problem is these patients who have the longest length of stay are medically stabilized but don’t receive treatment interventions related to their presenting problem. Together, these findings indicate a need for accessible intervention in the ED. …
Mismatches: Museums, Anthropology And Amazonia, Anne-Christine Taylor
Mismatches: Museums, Anthropology And Amazonia, Anne-Christine Taylor
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Over the past decades, museums, particularly the large Euro-American ethnographic ones, have had trouble developing adequate presentations of Amazonian cultural productions. To some extent, this failure can be seen as a side effect of a more general trend—namely, the widening rift between museums and the discipline of anthropology. However, I will argue that the mismatch between the museum context and Amazonian indigenous peoples and cultures also draws on the former’s difficulty in understanding and adhering to the idea of museums, as opposed to other Western technologies of visualization and transmission. The aim of this conference, drawing both on my experience …

The Evolution Of Political Rhetoric: The Year In C-Span Archives Research, Robert X. Browning
The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research
Volume 6 of The Year in C-SPAN Archives Research series focuses on the rapidly changing rhetoric coloring American politics. An increasingly polarized electorate combined with advances in technology have led to a combative and pitched rhetoric through more and more outlets. Each chapter is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on communication studies, political science, history, and other fields.
Using the extensive collection of the C-SPAN Video Library, chapters cover the highly visible Thomas and Kavanaugh judicial nomination hearings as well as the ongoing debate around impeachment. Other pieces focus on the rhetoric of the 2008 Wall Street crisis, presidential campaign announcements, …

This paper provides an analysis of jazz swing in the work of classical guitarist and composer Roland Dyens. Drawing on Dyens’s published and recorded arrangements of jazz standards, I study both his notation and his performance of swing, starting with a preliminary study of his collection Night and Day and proceeding to a detailed analysis of Nuages—his notated arrangement and four recorded performances. To provide context for Dyens’s stylistic referents, I analyze Django Reinhardt’s 1940 ensemble performance of Nuages. Throughout the discussion, I utilize digital audio analysis and models of microtiming to reveal Dyens’s sophisticated understanding and execution …

Timbre-Based Composition For The Guitar: A Non-Guitarist’S Approach To Mapping And Notation, Jason Noble, Steve Cowan
Soundboard Scholar
Composing for the guitar can be intimidating for non-guitarists, but their fresh perspectives can uncover new ways of thinking about music for the instrument. This paper discusses timbre-based composition, an approach to writing for guitar that may be more intuitive for non-guitarist composers than traditional polyphonic composition. The rich palette of timbres available on the guitar, including pitched and nonpitched sounds, is conceived as primary compositional material. Issues of notation and mapping are addressed, focusing on three categories of mappings: (i) physical mapping from notational symbols onto physical objects, such as parts of the guitar; (ii) analogical mapping from …

Age related hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health conditions affecting the elderly people. With aging, risk of Presbycusis and hyperlipidemia increases. Although most studies do reach some sort of agreement, the evidence supporting a relationship between presbycusis and hyperlipidemia remains questionable. The objective of this study is to determine the association between age related hearing loss and hyperlipidemia and assess the severity of hearing loss in hyperlipidemic patients. This cross sectional analytic study was carried out at ENT Out Patient Clinic at Al Sader teaching Hospital from March 2019 to December 2019. A cross‑sectional study on …

In response to pathological stimuli, the heart develops ventricular hypertrophy that progressively decompensates and leads to heart failure. miRNAs are increasingly recognized as pathogenic factors, clinically relevant biomarkers, and potential therapeutic targets. We identified that mir15a/mir16-1 cluster was negatively correlated with hypertrophic severity in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The mir15a/mir16-1 expression was enriched in cardiomyocytes (CMs), decreased in hypertrophic human hearts, and decreased in mouse hearts after transverse aortic constriction (TAC). CM-specific mir15a/mir16-1 knockout promoted cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction after TAC. CCAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP)β was responsible for the downregulation of mir15a/mir16-1 cluster transcription. Mechanistically, mir15a/mir16-1 cluster attenuated the insulin/IGF1 …

Traditional ASIC implementations have the well known draw-back of reduced flexibility compared to software implementations. Since modem security protocols are increasingly defined to be algorithm independent, a high degree of flexibility with respect to the cryptographic algorithms is desirable. A promising solution which combines high flexibility with the speed and physical security of traditional hardware is the implementation of cryptographic algorithms on reconfigurable devices such as FPGA. In this paper we compare - in terms of area and speed-FPGA Implementation of radix-4 scalable Montgomery modular multiplier using encoding technique (15] with ASIC implementation for different word sizes of operands. Effect Of Bedforms On Velocity Distribution In Alluvial Channels., M. Attia, Mohsen Mohamed Ahmed
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Velocity distribution over pronounced rough surfaces shows a deviation from log- law for small values of y. In the case of duned bed, this distance may be 0.5 to 2 times the dune height. The concept of additional mixing length was used to obtain a log- law which shows deviation in velocity from log- law near the bed and constants appearing in the equation were evaluated using experimental data from flume studies.

Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler and can be used to constrain the expansion history of the Universe at low redshift. Standard BAO analyses return a model-independent measurement of the expansion rate and the comoving angular diameter distance as a function of redshift, normalized by the sound horizon at radiation drag. However, this methodology relies on anisotropic distance distortions of a fixed, precomputed template (obtained in a given fiducial cosmology) in order to fit the observations. Therefore, it may be possible that extensions to the consensus ΛCDM add contributions to the BAO feature that cannot be captured …
