Background: Summarization networks are compact summaries of ontologies. The “Big Picture” view offered by summarization networks enables to identify sets of concepts that are more likely to have errors than control concepts. For ontologies that have outgoing lateral relationships, we have developed the "partial-area taxonomy" summarization network. Prior research has identified one kind of outlier concepts, concepts of small partials-areas within partial-area taxonomies. Previously we have shown that the small partial-area technique works successfully for four ontologies (or their hierarchies).
Methods: To improve the Quality Assurance (QA) scalability, a family-based QA framework, where one QA technique is potentially applicable to …

Background: Ontologies house various kinds of domain knowledge in formal structures, primarily in the form of concepts and the associative relationships between them. Ontologies have become integral components of many health information processing environments. Hence, quality assurance of the conceptual content of any ontology is critical. Relationships are foundational to the definition of concepts. Missing relationship errors (i.e., unintended omissions of important definitional relationships) can have a deleterious effect on the quality of an ontology. An abstraction network is a structure that overlays an ontology and provides an alternate, summarization view of its contents. One kind of abstraction network is …

Extending Import Detection Algorithms For Concept Import From Two To Three Biomedical Terminologies, Vipina K. Keloth, James Geller, Yan Chen, Julia Xu
Publications and Research
Background: While enrichment of terminologies can be achieved in different ways, filling gaps in the IS-A hierarchy backbone of a terminology appears especially promising. To avoid difficult manual inspection, we started a research program in 2014, investigating terminology densities, where the comparison of terminologies leads to the algorithmic discovery of potentially missing concepts in a target terminology. While candidate concepts have to be approved for import by an expert, the human effort is greatly reduced by algorithmic generation of candidates. In previous studies, a single source terminology was used with one target terminology.
Methods: In this paper, we are extending …

Journal of Family Strengths
Background: US tobacco prevalence estimates often combine Hispanic subgroups, distorting a precise view of specific tobacco use patterns across culturally, geopolitically, and even genetically diverse ethnicities. National and regional data are commonly discordant given the variation in Hispanic samples, and often do not include non-cigarette tobacco product prevalence. Cameron Country Hispanic Cohort (CCHC) participants at the Texas-Mexico border provide a unique opportunity to observe tobacco use patterns in an ethnically homogenous Mexican-American population.
Methods: CCHC participants (n=1,672) reported on susceptibility to, ever, and current use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, snus, and snuff products. The present study reports cross-sectional prevalence for …

Recruitment And Retention Of Catholic School Principals: The Importance Of School Leadership In The Success Of Catholic Schools, Elise Abbie Dite
Recruitment And Retention Of Catholic School Principals: The Importance Of School Leadership In The Success Of Catholic Schools, Elise Abbie Dite
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Catholic Church has established the importance of a high-quality Catholic school as an essential opportunity for parishes, pastors, parents, teachers, and school leaders to pass the Catholic faith on to the next generation. To ensure an excellent Catholic education for all students, each school must have a strong principal in place who is an excellent faith and instructional leader. Strong principal leadership is an essential element in school success, and schools across the country, both public and private, are experiencing a principal shortage. A shortage of qualified principals means that schools and students are challenged as they look for …
Impact Of Different Types Of Social Support On Adherence And Treatment Outcomes In An Online Behavioral Weight Loss Program, Jocelyn Rossitto
Impact Of Different Types Of Social Support On Adherence And Treatment Outcomes In An Online Behavioral Weight Loss Program, Jocelyn Rossitto
Honors Scholar Theses
This study examined the effects of four subtypes of social support (tangible, positive interaction, emotional-informational, and affectionate) on caloric intake, adherence to reporting calories, weight, and physical activity, as well as weight loss outcomes in a 4-month online behavioral weight loss intervention. Participants completed social support measures before treatment, had their height taken before treatment, and had their weight measured before and after treatment. Baseline affectionate social support and emotional-informational support both significantly predicted mean caloric intake (p = .008, p < .001, respectively). No baseline types of social support significantly predicted adherence to reporting weight, physical activity minutes or overall adherence to the online program (p’s ≥ .50). None of the assessed types of social support predicted weight loss outcomes or were associated with BMI (p’s ≥ .52). These results suggest that social support types do impact caloric intake and adherence to reporting calories in an online behavioral weight loss program. Further studies are needed to determine the best way to better integrate these social support types into future weight loss interventions.
Single-Fluorophore Sensors For Mechanical Force In Living Cells, Sarah Kricheff
Single-Fluorophore Sensors For Mechanical Force In Living Cells, Sarah Kricheff
Honors Scholar Theses
Mechanotransduction is the process by which a mechanical stimulus is converted to a cellular signal. This process is heavily influential of cell morphology, differentiation, and behavior. However, altered levels of mechanical stimuli are also found in many pathological contexts. For example, cancerous cells have stiffer surrounding tissue than healthy cells, and research suggests that this alters cell behavior and promotes metastasis. Despite these findings, the cellular processes behind these signaling alterations remain widely unknown. Understanding these cascades is critical, as involved proteins can give us a deeper understanding of the role of mechanotransduction, and certain proteins can potentially be targeted …

Structural Insights Into Host-Pathogen Interactions Of Alphaviruses, Katherine Basore
Structural Insights Into Host-Pathogen Interactions Of Alphaviruses, Katherine Basore
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Alphaviruses are arthropod-borne, single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses of the Togaviridae family that infect various vertebrates worldwide in tropical and temperate areas, causing emerging and reemerging diseases in humans. Mature virions are 70 nm in diameter and contain a ~11-kilobase genome encapsidated within a nucleocapsid core, a host-derived lipid bilayer, and an envelope comprised of heterodimers of the glycoproteins E1 and E2 arranged into trimeric spikes with T=4 icosahedral symmetry. Alphaviruses are categorized into two groups based on their clinical symptoms: the arthritogenic alphaviruses, such as chikungunya (CHIKV), Mayaro (MAYV), Ross River (RRV), Semliki Forest (SFV), and O’nyong-nyong (ONNV) viruses, which …

Epidemics, Politics And Public Health: Ludwig Rajchman, Md, The League Of Nations Health Organization And The Creation Of A Transnational Health Institution, Paul J. Weinbaum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traditional scholarship on the League of Nations labels the organization as a failure because it did not prevent the outbreak of the World War II. Recent research examines League activities in a more comprehensive manner and concludes that the organization should be credited with important and enduring achievements. Perhaps the most successful work was carried out by the Health Section led by Dr. Ludwick Rajchman. Using primary sources from the League archives in Geneva, documents from organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, articles from medical journals and other relevant secondary sources, I argue that the Health Section, became the world’s …

Manipur is one of the North-Eastern states of India and it lies on the ancient silk route and serves as a meeting point between the Southeast Asia and South Asia. The origin and migration histories of Naga and Kuki tribal populations have not been clearly understood. Moreover, Kukis have been traced to two different ancestries, which have created confusion among the people. The present study examined genomic affinities and differentiation of the Naga and Kuki tribal populations of Manipur, Northeast India. Twenty autosomal markers (Eight Alu InDels, and twelve Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms) were analysed. Findings showed genetic differences between …

Nonlinear Interactive Analysis Of Concrete Piled-Raft., A. Bayoumy, Wahid Ali, Mahmoud El-Meligy
Nonlinear Interactive Analysis Of Concrete Piled-Raft., A. Bayoumy, Wahid Ali, Mahmoud El-Meligy
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The piled raft foundation has shown growing applicability in the last two decades as an economic foundation type, where the structural loads are carried partly by the piles and partly by the contact stresses under the raft. The ratio of the load carried by piles to that carried directly by the contact stresses under the raft depends on many factors. Among these factors are the relative rigidity of the raft, the shear strength of the soil under the raft, the shear strength of the soil at the piles tin, the frictional stresses along the piles, and the piles settlement. The …

Lossless Image Compression Using Wavelet And Vector Quantization., M. Helal, Sabry Saraya, S. El-Taweel
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In this paper, we propose a new low bit rate scheme that combines the Discrete Wavelet transform (IWT) and Vector Quantization (VQ) for image compression with high Compression Ratio (CR) in order to achieve acceptable quality of output images, Image compression using the combination of DWT willy VQ has been considered in many recent works; here in our paper the DWT was performed on several gray scale standard images, each of (256X256) byte. We used 4 images as the training images of the train VO using LBG algorithm and got the final optimal codebook. Then we used another two images …

Finite Difference Time Domain Analysis Of Photonic Crystal Resonators., Nihal Fayez Areed, Salah Obayya, Hamdi Ahmed El-Mekati
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis has been effectively applied to investigate the transmission of the transverse electric polarized pulses in 90° bend optical waveguide. Comparison with a Time Domain Beam Propagation Method (BPM) based on finite element scheme has been made and excellent agreement is achieved. Moreover, a detailed study of photonic crystal square ring waveguide resonators has been carried out. A series of simulations are performed to determine by how much the radius of holes would have to be tuned to result in radiation at λ = 1.55255 μm (the center of the telecommunications c band) to …

In 1828, the French guitarist Charles de Marescot published a small booklet called La Guitaromanie, a collection of pieces for the guitar. It includes a caricature, entitled Discussion entre les Carulistes et les Molinistes, in which two opposing bands of guitarists are engaged in a fierce fight. Although, several scholars have proposed a variety of possible motives for such a shocking image, this issue has never been subjected to close examination. The article analyses the veracity of the known theories, making for the first time a comparative study between the method books of both Ferdinando Carulli and Francesco …

This paper demonstrates new transcriptions for the guitar of four piano pieces from the twentieth century: “The Night’s Music” from Bartók’s suite Out of Doors and Ligeti’s Musica ricercata, nos. 1, 2, and 7. The transcriptions deploy various newly invented single- and double-string magnet capos: I describe their design and, drawing on the work of De Souza, explain how their use transforms the affordances of the fretboard. In combination with scordaturas, the capos can be used to generate a series of radically altered open-string sets. Turning to the transcriptions of Bartók and Ligeti: by observing the pitch centers within …

Advances In The Understanding Of Auxin Signaling Through Indirect Mechanisms, Ryan Joseph Emenecker
Advances In The Understanding Of Auxin Signaling Through Indirect Mechanisms, Ryan Joseph Emenecker
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The plant hormone auxin is remarkable in its capacity to seemingly regulate all plant growth and developmental processes. Because of this, plants have evolved numerous mechanisms to allow for specific responses to auxin dependent on tissue type and developmental stage. Despite the importance of this specificity, we understand very little with respect to the molecular mechanisms underlying it. In this work, we examine two mechanisms used by plants to modulate auxin response across different tissues. First, we describe our finding that auxin interactions with another plant hormone, abscisic acid, is used as a mechanism to regulate auxin responsiveness in the …

Synching Up On A Satisfaction: A Mixed Methods Study Exploring Synchronous Online Classroom Learning Satisfaction In The Corporate Training Environment, Andrew Burklund
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning Infographics
Despite rapid evolution and innovation, “online learning” is no longer a universal term. There is a need to expand the existing research base to include subsets of online classrooms and include more diverse populations of learners. The overarching question for this study focused on synchronous online classroom satisfaction in a corporate setting. The researcher analyzed four years of historical learner- satisfaction data from post-class Level-1 satisfaction surveys from a Fortune 100 company. In total, 15,577 learner responses were collected, analyzed, and converged with data collected from employee focus groups related to synchronous online classroom satisfaction. The statistical analysis of learning …

Methods In Practice: Grounded Theory In Media Arts Education Research, Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning Infographics
Grounded theory qualitative research is a powerful method of practice, particularly for researchers aiming to explore complex processes through the perspectives and experiences of others. Grounded theory is also a powerful method of practice for researchers seeking to deepen a field of study in which the literature is thin and few theories exist. However, grounded theory is an often-overlooked research method, perhaps due to its inherent messiness. The purpose of this article is to demystify grounded theory practices by walking the reader through a grounded theory study conducted by the author in the field of media arts education. The study’s …
