Does Early Surgery Prevent Postoperative Icu Admission After Surgery For The Fracture Of The Hip. Nested Case Control Study Of 911 Patients, Obada Hasan, Laraib Mazhar, Umar Rabbani, Amna Rabbani, Fatima Mahmood, Shahryar Noordin
Does Early Surgery Prevent Postoperative Icu Admission After Surgery For The Fracture Of The Hip. Nested Case Control Study Of 911 Patients, Obada Hasan, Laraib Mazhar, Umar Rabbani, Amna Rabbani, Fatima Mahmood, Shahryar Noordin
Department of Medicine
Introduction: Since most hip fractures are treated surgically, it is imperative to find an optimum fracture-to-surgery time to decrease the potential complications and enhance postoperative outcomes. In comparison to the vast plethora of literature available on surgical delay and its implications on mortality, very little, if any, research is available on the impact of delayed surgery on postoperative ICU admission. The primary objective of our study is to examine the factors influencing post-surgical ICU admission in order to work on preventive strategies to reduce the potential associated morbidity.
Material and methods: Investigators did a nested case control study in a …

Roads And Airfields Constructed On Permafrost: A Synthesis Of Practice, Billy Connor, Douglas J. Goering, Mikhail Kanevskiy, Erin Trochim, Kevin L. Bjella, Robert L. Mchattie
AIDC Project Reports
This synthesis provides the practicing engineer with the basic knowledge required to build roadway and airports over permafrost terrain. Topic covered include an overview of permafrost, geotechnical investigations, slope stability, impacts of climate, and adaptation strategies during the design, construction and maintenance phases. The purpose of the synthesis is not to provide a comprehensive body of knowledge or to provide a complete how‐to manual. Rather the synthesis provides a working knowledge for those working in permafrost regions such that the practicing engineer will be able to work with subject matter experts to obtain the desired project outcomes.

Born To Burn: Characterizing Fuel Loads, Flammability And Plant Traits Across Spatio-Temporal Gradients Of Black Spruce Dominated Communities, Emilia J. Grzesik
Born To Burn: Characterizing Fuel Loads, Flammability And Plant Traits Across Spatio-Temporal Gradients Of Black Spruce Dominated Communities, Emilia J. Grzesik
Biological Sciences
The flammability of black spruce forests is influenced by the fuel loadings and quality of fuels within a site, whereas the ability of a site to self-replace after fire, and thus forest resiliency, depends on the fire-ecological trait attributes of the plant community. Black spruce plant communities have been undergoing self-replacement succession from low to moderate severity fires for thousands of years, however, recent intensification of interior Alaska's fire regime is leading to shifts in post-fire successional trajectories, resulting in many ecological implications. This study focuses on understanding the variation in black spruce forest flammability, based on fuel load quantity …
The Effects Of Individual And Environmental Heterogeneity On Long-Term Population Dynamics Of Cassin's Auklets (Ptychoramphus Aleuticus), Michael E. Johns
The Effects Of Individual And Environmental Heterogeneity On Long-Term Population Dynamics Of Cassin's Auklets (Ptychoramphus Aleuticus), Michael E. Johns
Biological Sciences
Reproductive output and survival are expected to be balanced through a tradeoff between current success and future potential, in response to environmental conditions that vary on spatial and temporal scales. Long-term datasets that follow uniquely marked animals through time are excellent tools for describing how heritable or derived traits that influence reproduction and survival can be attributed to individual quality, and how the added reproductive performance of these individuals influence population dynamics. A 37-year record of breeding histories from known-aged Cassin's auklets from Southeast Farallon Island, a colony off the coast of central California, was used to examine these ideas …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Health Equity As Evaluated Through The Covid-19 Response Concerning French-Speaking Refugees., Margaret Henning
Honors Theses
A collaborative approach is needed to understand the multifaceted medical bias and inequalities experienced by refugee camps of Francophone (French-speaking) nations. A combination of interest and passion for anthropology, medicine, and the French language presents a unique window of intersectionality to analyze this issue. Through a comprehensive review of literature published in both English and French languages, and connections with directors and leaders of refugee camps located in France and French-speaking African nations, we have elucidated a few examples of alarming medical bias experienced by both refugees and migrants. Although an exhaustive list of medical bias could be presented on …

Root Uptake Under Mismatched Distributions Of Water And Nutrients In The Root Zone, Jing Yan, Nathaniel A. Bogie, Teamrat A. Ghezzehei
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Most plants derive their water and nutrient needs from soils where the resources are often scarce, patchy, and ephemeral. It is not uncommon for plant roots to encounter mismatched patches of water-rich and nutrient-rich regions in natural environments. Such an uneven distribution of resources necessitates plant reliance on strategies for exploring and acquiring nutrients from relatively dry patches. We conducted a laboratory study that elucidates the biophysical mechanisms that enable this adaptation. The roots of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seedlings were laterally split and grown in two adjacent, hydraulically disconnected pots, which permitted precise control of water and nutrient applications to …

BACKGROUND: Retention in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care is dynamic, with patients frequently transitioning in and out of care. Analytical approaches (eg, survival analyses) commonly used to assess HIV care cascade outcomes fail to capture such transitions and therefore incompletely represent care outcomes over time.
METHODS: We analyzed antiretroviral therapy (ART)-eligible adults newly linking to care at 64 clinics in Zambia between 1 April 2014 and 31 July 2015. We used electronic medical record data and supplemented these with updated care outcomes ascertained by tracing a multistage random sample of patients lost to follow-up (LTFU, >90 days late for last …

Transformational Leadership: Implementing A Cultural Approach In Organizations, Mostafa Sayyadi Ghasabeh
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study provides support for the positive impact of transformational leadership on knowledge management. This article reveals that transformational leaders contribute to knowledge management by acting as effective change agents through better management of firms’ internal resources (i.e. organizational culture). In terms of mediating effects, this article shows that organizational culture is important in the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge management. The study also shows that transformational leaders not only directly impact knowledge management but, more specifically, foster a more effective culture, which positively contributes to the effectiveness of knowledge management.

University Professors As “Transformative Leaders”, Cam Caldwell, Verl Anderson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
University professors have a moral obligation to be ethical leaders in guiding their stewards. Transformative Leadership, a concept identified in both the educational and business leadership literature, provides a valuable model for university professors to consider as they interact with students and help them to learn and to prepare for the challenges of the modern world. This paper integrates the education and business leadership perspectives of Transformative Leadership and identifies the contributions that this leadership model can contribute to the effectiveness of university professors who adopt its principles.
Building Relationships And Resolving Conflicts: Infusing Critical Thinking Into Workplace Practices, Joseph P. Hester
Building Relationships And Resolving Conflicts: Infusing Critical Thinking Into Workplace Practices, Joseph P. Hester
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
As we are now living in a world characterized as a “new normal,” nothing is more important than leaders who are adept at critical thinking enabling them to enhance their businesses by making judicious decisions while remaining sensitive to the needs of their employees. When talking about critical thinking, often neglected is the descriptor “critical.” Among other things, “critical” means significant, vital, essential, and analytical, and involving skillful judgment as to truth and merit. From the point of view of commonsense, “critical” may also imply an effort to see a problem or situation clearly and truthfully in order to make …

Fair And Stable Prices In The Age Of Greed: The Torah View, Hershey H. Friedman, Murray Mizrachi
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Much of the Jewish legal tradition deals with business ethics. This paper focuses on an overlooked precept: ensuring price stability. There is a tendency to trivialize the law mandating that prices be kept low and affordable, but in the wake of the 2020 world pandemic, these laws are more important than ever. Indeed, very few people are aware that the ninth blessing of the ancient Amida (also known as shemoneh esrei) prayer, established by the 120 members of the Great Assembly in the 5th century BCE, is a prayer for divine protection against individuals who would raise prices …

The Process Of Establishing A Green Climate: Face-To-Face Interaction Between Leaders And Employees In The Microsystem, Ingeborg Flagstad, Svein Åge Kjøs Johnsen, Leif Rydstedt
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study explores the processes of establishing a green organizational climate in small-scale companies. Previous studies have primarily focused on factors associated with pro-environmental behaviour in large organizations. The role of a green organizational climate—specifically, the interactional processes involved in the construction of a green climate—has largely been unexplored. Entrepreneurial small companies constitute an ideal arena in which to study the initial phase of greening processes. The present study examined the process of establishing a green organizational climate in seven small-scale Norwegian companies. This article presents a systems model that was developed to analyse how processes at different levels interact …

Inferring Duplicate Data Traffic In Backbone Networks, Anonymous
Inferring Duplicate Data Traffic In Backbone Networks, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques for detection of duplicate data transfers over a backbone network based on time series correlation of the data traffic. Per techniques of this disclosure, a time series of data traffic is generated. Correlation of the time series of traffic flows from different servers is performed to determine duplicate data transfers. A correlation coefficient between different segments of traffic flow time series is determined. Segments of data traffic with a correlation coefficient that meet a threshold correlation coefficient (correlation coefficient close to 1) are identified as likely duplicate transfers. The described techniques can be utilized to detect …
