School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
Despite repeated calls for teacher education programs to become more field-centric and develop stronger collaborative partnerships, little scholarship describes sustained mentoring partnerships between teacher education programs and school or community partners. In addition, despite strong documentation of the low levels of literacy among youth labeled “at-risk” in the juvenile justice system, there is limited research on university undergraduate mentoring programs that specialize in training pre-service teachers to provide reading mentorship to incarcerated youth. This chapter focuses on the evolution of a program, Mentoring In Literacy Enhancement (MILE), developed as a team effort by university researchers, administrators from the juvenile residential …

When we reach to pick up an object, our actions are effortlessly informed by the object’s spatial information, the position of our limbs, stored knowledge of the object’s material properties, and what we want to do with the object. A substantial body of evidence suggests that grasps are under the control of “automatic, unconscious” sensorimotor modules housed in the “dorsal stream” of the posterior parietal cortex. Visual online feedback has a strong effect on the hand’s in-flight grasp aperture. Previous work of ours exploited this effect to show that grasps are …

The objective of this study was to characterize the etiological role of human adenovirus (HAdV) serotypes in pediatric gastroenteritis. Using a case-control design, we compared the frequencies of HAdV serotypes between children with ≥3 episodes of vomiting or diarrhea within 24 h and <7 days of symptoms (i.e., cases) and those with no infectious symptoms (i.e., controls). Stool samples and/or rectal swabs underwent molecular serotyping with cycle threshold (Ct) values provided by multiplex real-time reverse transcription-PCR testing. Cases without respiratory symptoms were analyzed to calculate the proportion of disease attributed to individual HAdV serotypes (i.e., attributable fraction). Between December 2014 and August 2018, adenoviruses were detected in 18.8% (629/3,347) of cases and 7.2% (97/1,355) of controls, a difference of 11.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.6%, 13.5%). In 96% (95% CI, 92 to 98%) of HAdV F40/41 detections, the symptoms could be attributed to the identified serotype; when serotypes C1, C2, C5, and C6 were detected, they were responsible for symptoms in 52% (95% CI, 12 to 73%). Ct values were lower among cases than among controls (

Age and sex differences in brain metabolite concentrations in early life are not well under- stood. We examined the associations of age and sex with brain metabolite levels in healthy neonates, and investigated the associations between neonatal brain metabolite concentrations and developmental outcomes. Forty-one infants (36–42 gestational weeks at birth; 39% female) of predominantly Hispanic/Latina mothers (mean 18 years of age) underwent MRI scanning approximately two weeks after birth. Multiplanar chemical shift imaging was used to obtain voxel-wise maps of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine, and choline concentrations across the brain. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, a measure of …

Lizard And Frog Removal Increases Spider Abundance But Does Not Cascade To Increase Herbivory, Karen H. Beard, Susan L. Durham, Michael R. Willig, Jess K. Zimmerman
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Insectivorous vertebrates, especially on islands, can exert top-down control on herbivorous prey, which can transfer through a food chain to reduce herbivory. However, in many systems insectivorous vertebrates feed on more than one trophic level, especially consuming arthropod predators, and this intraguild predation can diminish trophic cascades. Our goal was to determine, using an exclosure experiment, the relative importance of anole lizards and coqui frogs in controlling spider and arthropod abundances as well as herbivory rates in the understory of the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. We found that exclosures removing both anoles and coquis doubled spider abundance compared to …
Applying The Environmental Identity Development Model In Place-Based Education: An Online Resource Guide, Margaret R. Blake
Applying The Environmental Identity Development Model In Place-Based Education: An Online Resource Guide, Margaret R. Blake
Education
I created an online resource guide for place-based education (PBE) informed by the Environmental Identity Development (EID) Model and research (Green et al., 2016). The EID Model provides a flexible framework for understanding how individuals develop their sense of self within and in relation to the natural world. The model is valuable as a diagnostic tool and a guide in the creation of place-based activities that support children’s play, learning, and growth in nature. The goals of this project were to create an accessible guide to understanding the EID Model and theory; to demonstrate how the EID Model and research …

Vitas: A Visual Exhibit, Ilisa A. Walter
Art
VITAS is a visual exhibition that addresses the idea of a posthumous legacy. The substance of a person’s life is composed of what they’ve done, and what they become after death is determined by that substance. This exhibition is composed of 25 carved animal skulls and sculptures inspired by the concept of vitas, treating life as an opportunity to advance the next generation through life’s work. VITAS studies the idea of what happens after the passing of a being by applying embellishment, adornment, pigments, and carvings onto the skeletal remains of animals. By applying human influence to natural material, the …

Accountability And Literacy/Reading Interventions For Middles School Students, Britny Bucholz

We have found that the students who reach the expectations for the independent work, Student Application and independent reading are the individuals whose Lexile scores have increased the most. With that being said, we are also finding that many students are not taking personal ownership in their independent work. They were not meeting the expectations for Student Application and independent reading. In hopes to increase students Lexile scores, I would have like students to be held accountable for reaching the class expectations for Student Application and independent reading. To achieve this, I would have used a tiered system that would …

Student Success In Virtual Versus In-Person Learning During A Direct Instruction Math Intervention Course, Christina Lindmeier
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Public education has always been thought of as being completed in a brick and mortar setting with students in desks and teachers at the front of the classroom. Students interact with their peers and learn through lecture and hands-on activities. This general understanding was quickly changed in the spring of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools had to shift from in person learning to online learning with little to no planning time. As schools began to transition back in the fall of 2020, school boards had to make the choice of continuing all virtual learning, creating a hybrid learning …
Short-Term Direct Reading Instruction For 2nd Grade Students Using Horizons Fast Track A-B, Emily Dempster
Short-Term Direct Reading Instruction For 2nd Grade Students Using Horizons Fast Track A-B, Emily Dempster
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Children who read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school (Hernandez, 2011). This school-based project explored the effects of Horizons Fast Track A-B phonics intervention on oral reading fluency (ORF) progress of three second grade students. Students received 40-minute lessons, twice a week for three weeks. Lesson activities ranged from identifying letter sounds to story comprehension. Students were progress monitored weekly at the second- grade level using one-minute ORF probes. It appeared that the intervention was not beneficial for these students. Discussion includes possible changes that could have been made to make the …
Critical Dialogue: "The Politics Of War Powers: The Theory And History Of Presidential Unilateralism." By Sarah Burns, Jasmine Farrier
Critical Dialogue: "The Politics Of War Powers: The Theory And History Of Presidential Unilateralism." By Sarah Burns, Jasmine Farrier
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In the first half of 2020, impeachment, COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and the upcoming presidential election knocked forever wars even farther off our radar. According to Gallup’s “Most Important Problem” polling, over the past six months, national security, terrorism, and international affairs in general registered less than 0.5% of mentions in the national sample. And yet Sarah Burns’s new book is as relevant as it would have been if public opinion still cared about war as much as it did in the first decade of this century. Although this book, published in 2019, obviously could not include these timely 2020 …

Toxic Bones: The Burdens Of Discovering Human Remains In West Virginia's Abandoned And Unmarked Graves, J. William St. Clair, Robert Deal
West Virginia Law Review Online
This article pulls up and highlights a land use restriction, or financial burden, imposed upon West Virginia private real estate owners who inadvertently uncover human skeletal remains in unmarked graves on their property. In this state, those coming across human bones that historians and archaeologists eventually deem have no historical or archeological significance have a choice—pay the costs to have the bones removed and reinterred or cover the bones and use the property only as a cemetery in perpetuity. This burden becomes more acute when comparing West Virginia’s law to those of other states that require government officials, at public …
