Failure To Protect?: Applying The Drri-2 Scales To Rwanda And Srebrenica, Elizabeth Mason
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article critically reanalyses the action, or lack of action, taken by UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Srebrenica in the 1990's. The lack of action of UN peacekeepers in Rwanda and Bosnia has long been criticised as a conscious decision made by peacekeepers to not act in defence of those being targeted but instead to act as bystanders of genocide when they had the ability to prevent acts of genocide taking place. This article re-examines the actions of the UN command under Romeo Dallaire in Rwanda and Thom Karremans in Srebrenica, Bosnia in terms of the stress-related factors which influenced …

A Queer(Er) Genocide Studies, Lily Nellans
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This paper examines how queerness interacts with and is implicated in traditional genocides, i.e. those directed at racial, religious, national, and ethnic groups - the groups defined as protected classes in the Genocide Convention. It poses the following question: How can scholars of Genocide Studies learn from the queer theory-Genocide Studies nexus? To answer, this paper demonstrate how three distinct queer theory concepts can be woven with Genocide Studies to reveal novel insights into some of the field’s preeminent questions. Specifically, it draws on queer intellectual curiosity, heteronormativity, and reproductive futurism. Connecting queer theory with Genocide Studies yields empirical, analytical, …

Cambodian Family Albums: Tian's "L'Année Du Lièvre", Angelica P. So
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article explores how Franco-Cambodian cartoonist Tian’s graphic novel, L’année du lièvre [Year of the Rabbit], represents second-generation postmemory in the form of, what I call, a “Cambodian family album,” or a personal-collective archive. The album serves to convey to subsequent generations: 1) the history of the Cambodian genocide, 2) the collective memories of pre-1975 Cambodia preceding the Khmer Rouge takeover of Phnom Penh, and 3) the Cambodian humanitarian crisis and exodus of the 1970s-1990s. The conceptualization of the family album is derived from the literal translation, from Khmer into English, of the term “photo album” – “book designated for …

Findfur: A Tool For Predicting Furin Cleavage Sites Of Viral Envelope Substrates, Christine Gu
Master's Projects
Most biologically active proteins of eukaryotic cells are initially synthesized in the secretory pathway as inactive precursors and require proteolytic processing to become functionally active. This process is performed by a specialized family of endogenous enzymes known as proproteases convertases (PCs). Within this family of proteases, the most notorious and well-research is furin. Found ubiquitously throughout the human body, typical furin substrates are cleaved at sites composed of paired basic amino acids, specifically at the consensus sequence, R-X-[K/R]-R↓. Furin is often exploited by many pathogens, such as enveloped viruses, for proteolytic processing and maturation of their proteins. Glycoproteins of enveloped …

Ogre-Faced, Net-Casting Spiders Use Auditory Cues To Detect Airborne Prey, Jay A. Stafstrom, Gil Menda, Eya I. Nitzany, Eileen A. Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy
Eileen Hebets Publications
Prey-capture behavior among spiders varies greatly from passive entrapment in webs to running down prey items on foot. Somewhere in the middle are the ogre-faced, net-casting spiders (Deinopidae: Deinopis) that actively capture prey while being suspended within a frame web. Using a net held between their front four legs, these spiders lunge downward to ensnare prey from off the ground beneath them. This “forward strike” is sensorially mediated by a massive pair of hypersensitive, night-vision eyes. Deinopids can also intercept flying insects with a “backward strike,” a ballistically rapid, overhead back-twist, that seems not to rely on visual cues. Past …

Pierson Syndrome Associated With Hypothyroidism And Septic Shock, Areeba Ejaz, Meher B. Ali, Fatima Siddiqui, Mashal B. Ali, Ammarah Jamal
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Pierson syndrome is caused by mutations in the laminin β2 gene causing absent β2 laminin, which is a normal component of the basement membranes of the mature glomerulus, structures in the anterior eye and neuromuscular junctions. The mutations manifest as congenital nephrotic syndrome and microcoria which are characteristic ocular features of this disease. These mutations may also result in neurological abnormalities such as hypotonia and psychomotor retardation. We report a two-month old boy who presented to the Pediatrics Department of Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, in 2015, with the typical features of microcoria and congenital nephrotic …

A Genetic Based Algorithm For Short-Term Thermal Generating Unit Commitment., Mohamed Ibrahim Ibrahim
A Genetic Based Algorithm For Short-Term Thermal Generating Unit Commitment., Mohamed Ibrahim Ibrahim
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Unit Commitment is one of the most complex and difficult optimization problem in power systems. The objective of the optimal commitment is to determine the on/off states of the units in the system to meet the load demand and spinning reserve requirements at each time period, such that the overall cost of generation is minimized, while satisfying the various operational constraints. This paper presents the application of an improved genetic algorithm (GA) with crossover, mutation, and advanced operators such as repair and swap mutation to determine the commitment order of the thermal units in power generation. The proposed GA has …

Fuel Cell Technology Overview Study And Evaluation., Helmy El-Sayed Gad
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The air pollution in large communities has reached a critical state in the last few decades. Transportation, power generation and other civil and industrial activities are responsible of this drastic pollution. The fuel cell technology has come as a new approach to satisfy the ever increasing thirst for power generation and, in the same time, keeping a clean environment. The fuel cell is a direct energy conversion unit from the fuel chemical energy to electrical energy, without conversion first to heat. This paper deal with fuel cell technology, theory of operation, classification and examine its suitability for stationary, mobile and …

A Comparison Of Standardized Letters Of Evaluation For Emergency Medicine Residency Applicants., David Wilson, Chaiya Laoteppitaks, Shruti Chandra
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Medical students pursuing an emergency medicine (EM) residency are advised to obtain at least two Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOE). Students often complete one rotation at their home institution and at least one "away" rotation at a program separate from their home institution. The SLOE was introduced as an objective evaluation tool. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in scores between home rotation and away rotation SLOEs.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the SLOEs of all applicants to an urban, academic EM residency program. For each SLOE, we calculated a composite score from …

Climate change is a complex phenomenon, so much so that even those with expert knowledge on the scientific data struggle to understand the impacts of climate change on their everyday lives. Contradictions across systems of knowledge make clear that climate change is not just a problem of scientific understanding but is also simultaneously a problem of global coordination as well as a sociopolitical problem of connecting domains of knowledge that are seldom valued equitably. The project described in this paper is a prototype effort to put knowledge from community members in two culturally distinct rural areas of the world at …

What Is Nonlocal In Counterfactual Quantum Communication?, Yakir Aharonov, Daniel Rohrlich
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We revisit the “counterfactual quantum communication” of Salih et al. [1], who claim that an observer “Bob” can send one bit of information to a second observer “Alice” without any physical particle traveling between them. We show that a locally conserved, massless current—specifically, a current of modular angular momentum, Lz mod 2ℏ—carries the one bit of information. We integrate the flux of Lz mod 2ℏ from Bob to Alice and show that it equals one of the two eigenvalues of Lz mod 2ℏ, either 0 or ℏ, thus precisely accounting for the one bit of information he sends her.We previously …

Ethical Concerns Of Paying Cash To Vulnerable Participants: The Qualitative Researchers’ Views, Adrianna Surmiak Dr
The Qualitative Report
The aim of the paper is to discuss the ethical issues related to financial payments. The article compares the concerns and experiences of researchers who did not pay the participants with the concerns and experiences of researchers who paid the participants. It draws on in-depth interviews with Polish social researchers who conducted qualitative research with vulnerable participants. The paper indicates that researchers who did not pay the participants believed that financial payment reduces the researcher’s relationship with informants to an economic transaction. For this reason, they had more ethical concerns about paying than researchers who did pay. My interviewees suggest …

Inclusion In Catholic Schools: From Inception To Implementation, Christine Bonfiglio, Karen Kroh
Journal of Catholic Education
Inclusion of students with diverse learning needs, including those with disabilities, in Catholic schools is becoming more prevalent. Despite a long history of the call to serve all learners, Catholic schools have been slow to welcome students who are academically and behaviorally diverse. Meeting the needs of all learners requires understanding the concept of inclusion, removing barriers, and implementing inclusive educational practices. This article defines inclusion and its prevalence in Catholic schools in comparison to national trends in the public domain. Identified barriers to successful inclusive education are identified and described. Additionally, effective practices are outlined and illustrated using a …
