Biology Faculty Research

Understanding ecosystem carbon-cycling responses to atmospheric CO2 enrichment is critical to preserve biodiversity and maintain vital ecosystem services in grasslands impacted by global change. We conducted an 8-y experiment enriching CO2 concentrations from preindustrial to midtwenty-first century levels on grassland plant communities on upland, lowland, and alluvial soils. CO2 enrichment increased the CO2 efflux from soils to atmosphere in amounts depending on whether the dominant limitation was CO2 or feedbacks (net positive or negative) from soil moisture and plant species turnover. These findings highlight how multiple concurrent limitations, not single limitations in sequence, regulate the …

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Since I am in the holiday spirit (and, having just consumed a mug of hot toddy, a glass of eggnog and a nip of cheer, the holiday spirits are in me), I have decided to follow in that great tradition of boring everyone silly by writing a Christmas letter.

Positive Patient Outcomes As A Result Of Encouragement And Empowerment: A Capstone Case Series, Shelby Berry, Antony Joseph Dec 2020

Positive Patient Outcomes As A Result Of Encouragement And Empowerment: A Capstone Case Series, Shelby Berry, Antony Joseph

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Introduction: Mild sensorineural hearing loss should command as much attention as more severe levels of hearing loss. When clinicians encounter cases of marginal and mild hearing loss, patient-centered counseling should be employed. Case Presentation: A young adult-aged patient presented with a family history of hearing loss and difficulty hearing binaurally. Discussion: Special care and attention are required to council and provide care for patients with mild hearing loss. The audiogram alone is often incapable of identifying the extent of listening difficulty for persons with mild hearing loss. Conclusion: Amplification and patient counseling can benefit individuals with marginal to mild hearing …

Acute Gastroenteritis Due To Blastocystis Hominis In An Adolescent Boy, Ramesh Bhat Yellanthoor Dec 2020

Acute Gastroenteritis Due To Blastocystis Hominis In An Adolescent Boy, Ramesh Bhat Yellanthoor

Open Access archive

Acute gastroenteritis with persistent vomiting, high degree fever and blood streaking stools often suggests bacterial aetiology in children. Authors report a 13-year-old boy presenting with acute watery diarrhoea with persistent vomiting, fever of 103°F, abdominal cramps and blood streaking stools who failed to show any response to parenteral third-generation cephalosporin for 72 hours. The stool examination revealed numerous cystic and amoeboid forms of Blastocystis hominis. Metronidazole was started and the boy promptly responded within 24 hours. There was no recurrence of symptoms then onwards. The case highlights the crucial stool examination in case of acute diarrhoeal disease for rare aetiology.

Current Role Of Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy In The Treatment Of Intracranial Tumors, Farhan A. Mirza, Rida Mitha, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim Dec 2020

Current Role Of Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy In The Treatment Of Intracranial Tumors, Farhan A. Mirza, Rida Mitha, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Section of Neurosurgery

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is gaining popularity in the treatment of both primary and secondary intracranial tumors. The goal of LITT is to deliver thermal energy in a predictable, controlled, and minimally invasive fashion. It can be particularly valuable in patients with recurrent tumors who, due to previous radiation or surgery, may have a potentially higher risk of wound breakdown or infection with repeat craniotomy. Deep-seated lesions that are often inaccessible through open approaches (thalamus, hypothalamus, mesial basal temporal lobe, brainstem) may also be suitable targets. The experience and data published thus far on this modality is limited but …

Immediate Denture With Unusual Bone Morphology: A Clinical Report, Jaini Ji Dec 2020

Immediate Denture With Unusual Bone Morphology: A Clinical Report, Jaini Ji

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Construction of immediate denture is always challenging, as the arrangement of artificial teeth cannot be observed at a try-in appointment. This report describes the clinical case of a patient presenting unusual large alveolar ridges, bony prominences, severe undercuts, and bulbous tuberosities, rendering the arbitrary teeth setting and positioning difficult. An extensive surgical correction of alveolar ridges was required to facilitate the placement of an immediate denture, satisfying the patient demands.

Why Inclusion Isn’T Coming, It Is Already Here: Catholic Schools And Inclusive Special Education, Michael N. Faggella-Luby, Max Engel Dec 2020

Why Inclusion Isn’T Coming, It Is Already Here: Catholic Schools And Inclusive Special Education, Michael N. Faggella-Luby, Max Engel

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic school personnel are increasingly recognizing that many of their students, including students with disabilities, need and benefit from inclusive educational practices. These oftentimes ad hoc practices are motivated by the Catholic identity and mission of the school, as well as the diverse educational needs of students. This article responds to these recognized realities, arguing that Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and the practical reality of academically diverse students requires understanding disability as being unique to each student, though within categories recognized in the Individuals With Disabilities Act (IDEA) that serve as starting points for interventions. CST and the recognition of …

Modelling Cross-Disciplinary Integration In Fda Multidisciplinary And Interdisciplinary Reviews For New Drug Products: A Phenomenological Descriptive Comparative Case Study, Kevin Bugin Dec 2020

Modelling Cross-Disciplinary Integration In Fda Multidisciplinary And Interdisciplinary Reviews For New Drug Products: A Phenomenological Descriptive Comparative Case Study, Kevin Bugin

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Cross-disciplinary integration is a key feature of interdisciplinary research and the collaborative form is often one of the desired outcomes of Team Science endeavors. In 2019 the FDA began rolling out a new interdisciplinary approach to their cross-disciplinary assessment of marketing applications, with the key feature being integrated, collaborative review documents (Woodcock et al., 2020). FDA’s assessment of new drug products to allow them to enter the marketplace is a critical translational activity to protect the US public’s health that requires team-based integration and transparency (Woodcock, 2018). And, while increased cross-disciplinary integration through enhanced collaboration and communication is sought through …

Contextualized Discipleship: A Catalyst System For The Xxi Century, David Rangel Dec 2020

Contextualized Discipleship: A Catalyst System For The Xxi Century, David Rangel

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

The reality for the Christian churches in the U.S. is that congregations are declining in attendance. Local churches are being closed every year, and the people called Christians are decreasing in their discipleship practices more than in previous years. However, the reason for this disgraceful reality is not because people have stopped attending church; rather, it is because there are now fewer Christians. Unfortunately, churches in their effort to make disciples prefer to buy a curriculum that, in the end, does not reflect the needs and realities of their own context. More than ever, the Christian industry in the U.S. …

Sow, Babacar Ndoye, Carrie Jo Cain, Mathew M. Baumann, Kimberly B. Johnson, Paulina A. Lindstedt, Brigette F. Blacker, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a simple intervention that can prevent childhood deaths from severe diarrhea and dehydration. In a previous study, we mapped the use of ORS treatment subnationally and found that ORS coverage increased over time, while the use of home-made alternatives or recommended home fluids (RHF) decreased, in many countries. These patterns were particularly striking within Senegal, Mali, and Sierra Leone. It was unclear, however, whether ORS replaced RHF in these locations or if children were left untreated, and if these patterns were associated with health policy changes.
Methods: We used a Bayesian geostatistical model and …
