A Quiet War: The Judiciary's Steady And Unspoken Effort To Limit Felony-Murder, Maggie Davis Dec 2020

A Quiet War: The Judiciary's Steady And Unspoken Effort To Limit Felony-Murder, Maggie Davis

Arkansas Law Review

On a Wednesday afternoon a sixteen-year-old boy is hanging out after school with four of his friends. He is your average sixteen-year-old; he has a girlfriend who works at Wendy’s, and his current worry is about passing his driving test. He smokes some weed from time to time with his friends, but he has a clean criminal record. After complaining about being broke and deciding they have nothing better to do, the five friends elect to break into a seemingly vacant home in order to steal some items for resale. He is already thinking about what he will buy with …

The Jones Trespass Doctrine And The Need For A Reasonable Solution To Unreasonable Protection, Geoffrey Corn Dec 2020

The Jones Trespass Doctrine And The Need For A Reasonable Solution To Unreasonable Protection, Geoffrey Corn

Arkansas Law Review

Each day that Houston drivers exit from Interstate 45 to drive to downtown Houston, they pass an odd sight. Nestled within some bushes is an encampment of tents. This encampment is very clearly located on public property adjacent to the interstate highway, and equally clearly populated by homeless individuals. While local police ostensibly tolerate this presence, at least temporarily, the sight frequently evokes an image in my mind of a police search of those tents. This thought is especially prominent on the days I am driving to my law school, South Texas College of Law Houston, to teach my federal …

The Comparative Legal Landscape Of Educational Pluralism, Nicole Stelle Garnett Dec 2020

The Comparative Legal Landscape Of Educational Pluralism, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Arkansas Law Review

In the United States, debates about private and faith-based education tend to focus on questions about government funding: which kinds of schools should the government fund (and at what levels)? Should, for example, students be able to use public funds to attend privately operated schools? Faith-based schools? If so, what policy mechanisms should be used to fund private schools—vouchers, tax credits, direct transfer payments? How much funding should these schools receive? The same amount as public schools or less? As a historical matter, the focus on funding in the United States makes sense because only public (that is, government-operated) elementary …

Readiness For Digital Preservation In Indonesia, Dyah Srirahayu, Dessy Harisanty, Maisyah Su’Adaa Irfana Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries using institutional repositories aim to manage and preserve digital content. As digital collection providers, they must be prepared to face various problems, especially policy issues regarding how digital collections can develop and can meet user needs in a relatively long time (long-term use). The problem that will be faced is the age of data storage media which can only last at least 10 years so that digital collections must be copied again to reduce the possibility of losing the information contained in digital collections. This problem is one of the reasons for the digital preservation of repository digital collections …

Faculty Authored Articles

We use Van Allen Probes (Radiation Belt Storm Probes A and B, henceforth RBSP-A and RBSP-B) and GOES-13 and GOES-15 (henceforth G-13 and G-15) multipoint magnetic field, electric field, plasma, and energetic particle observations to study the spatial, temporal, and spectral characteristics of compressional Pc5 pulsations observed during the recovery phase of a strong geomagnetic storm on 1 January 2016. From ∼ 19:00 to 23:02 UT, successive magnetospheric compressions enhanced the peak-to-peak amplitudes of Pc5 waves with 4.5'6.0 mHz frequencies from 0' 2 to 10'15 nT at both RBSP-A and RBSP-B, particularly in the prenoon magnetosphere. Poloidal Pc4 pulsations with …

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer Dec 2020

Religious Views And Coping In The Black Community, Tresaundra Roberson, Elizabeth Yost Hammer

XULAneXUS

Abstract

The topic of mental illness is taboo in the Black Community. This experiment sought to explore the relationship between the religious views African Americans hold and how they deal with mental illness stigma. I considered the factors of religiosity and coping, as a predictor of what type of coping mechanism the individual would choose to use. Undergraduates were given two surveys using Likert-Scales followed by a demographic section, the first measured how religious an individual was using the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS), while the second measured how often an individual used certain coping mechanisms derived from the COPE …

Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana N. Littlepage Dec 2020

Using Simulation For Oncology Nursing Competency Evaluation In Hospitals, Dana N. Littlepage

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Hospitals in an integrated health system, are experiencing low levels of oncologic admissions to their medical surgical units. This is creating a challenge for the organization to maintain nursing competencies for this subset of patients.

Context: In low volume, high risk acute care environments, where chemotherapy is to be provided, seasoned registered nurses grapple with maintaining their competencies, professional confidence and feeling safe enough to administer, monitor and care for this patient population (Muehlbauer, Parr, & Perkins, 2013). The purpose of this project was to ensure that both new and seasoned acute care oncology nurses have access …

Image Spam Classification With Deep Neural Networks, Ajay Pal Singh, Katerina Potika Dec 2020

Image Spam Classification With Deep Neural Networks, Ajay Pal Singh, Katerina Potika

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Image classification is a fundamental problem of computer vision and pattern recognition. We focus on images that contain spam. Spam is unwanted bulk content, and image spam is unwanted content embedded inside the images. Image spam potentially creates a threat to the credibility of any email-based communication system. While a lot of machine learning techniques are successful in detecting textual based spam, this is not the case for image spams, which can easily evade these textual-spam detection systems. In our work, we explore and evaluate four deep learning techniques that detect image spams. First, we train deep neural networks using …

Effect Of Microcapsule Content On Diels-Alder Room Temperature Self-Healing Thermosets., Sadella C Santos, John J La Scala, Giuseppe R Palmese

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

A furan functionalized epoxy-amine thermoset with an embedded microcapsule healing system that utilizes reversible Diels-Alder healing chemistry was used to investigate the influence of microcapsule loading on healing efficiency. A urea-formaldehyde encapsulation technique was used to create capsules with an average diameter of 150 µm that were filled with a reactive solution of bismaleimide in phenyl acetate. It was found that optimum healing of the thermoset occurred at 10 wt% microcapsule content for the compositions investigated. The diffusion of solvent through the crack interface and within fractured samples was investigated using analytical diffusion models. The decrease in healing efficiency at …

Green Stormwater Infrastructure Planning In Urban Landscapes: Understanding Context, Appearance, Meaning, And Perception, Mahbubur Meenar, Jordan Howell, Devon Moulton, Shane Walsh

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Prior research has documented environmental and economic benefits of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI); literature on GSI social benefits is also becoming more prevalent among scholars around the world. This paper aims to understand whether GSI projects are considered as assets to urban neighborhoods or as projects that might introduce a new set of social concerns. Based on field observations of 238 GSI projects and 50 intercept interviews, we investigate selected social aspects of GSI, such as project context, visual appearance, recreational appeal, meaning, and public perception, in two neighboring US cities—Philadelphia and Camden. Analysis of field data and observation notes …

Their one-way road trip had started the day before when they left their home in San Bernardino for the final time. Paisley was afraid of moving away from the city she grew up in, but not for the same reasons many children her age would be. . So, her social life wasn’t her primary concern when it came time to abandon her home. Instead, she was afraid to leave San Bernardino because she had memorized all the perfect bike routes within a thirty-mile radius. On the other, the fear that their new home would have insufficient routes and roads compared …

Meteoritic Evidence For A Ceres-Sized Water-Rich Carbonaceous Chondrite Parent Asteroid, V E. Hamilton, C A. Goodrich, A H. Treiman, Harold Connolly Jr., M E. Zolensky, M H. Shaddad

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites record the earliest stages of Solar System geo-logical activities and provide insight into their parent bodies' histories. Some carbonaceous chondrites are volumetrically dominated by hydrated minerals, providing evidence for low temperature and pressure aqueous alteration1. Others are dominated by anhydrous minerals and textures that indicate high temperature metamorphism in the absence of aqueous fluids1. Evidence of hydrous metamorphism at intermediate pressures and temperatures in carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies has been virtually absent. Here we show that an ungrouped, aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrite fragment (numbered 202) from the Almahata Sitta (AhS) meteorite contains an assemblage of minerals, including …

Healing Through Ancestral Knowledge And Letters To Our Children: Mothering Infants During A Global Pandemic, Noralis Rodriguez-Coss, Miriam G. Valdovinos, Rupal Parekh

Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship

The struggle for work–life balance amongst women in academia who are both mothers and scholars continues to be apparent during a global pandemic highlighting the systemic fissures and social inequalities ingrained in our society, including systems of higher learning. Women of color professors on the tenure track are vulnerable to the intersecting ways capitalism, sexism, and racism exacerbate the challenges faced by motherscholars, making it imperative to explore these nuances. While motherscholars may share advice about navigating family leave policies or strategizing scholarship goals, no one could have prepared us for our motherscholar roles during a pandemic. We were, in …
