Patient Concerns Inventory Head And Neck As An Individualised Approach To Assess Post-Treatment Outcomes Among Oral Cancer Patients In Malaysia, Aminnudin Ainon Natrah
Student Works (2020-2029)
Background: Oral cancer and its treatment undisputedly impacts patients‘ quality of life, posing a challenge to clinicians in managing them optimally. Identifying patients‘ concerns is central to holistic patient care; as such time constraints faced by clinicians during consultation sessions may pose a barrier in identifying such concerns effectively. The use of PCI-H&N during post-treatment oral cancer consultation sessions has previously shown to be beneficial, simultaneously promoting effective patient- clinician communication during consultations. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the feasibility of the PCI-H&N in assessing post- treatment oral cancer patients concerns and its relationship with patients‘ HRQoL, psychological distress …

Teacher-Tool Relationship Of Maldivian Esl Teachers: A Multiple Case Study, Wadheefa Aishath
Student Works (2020-2029)
Previous research has revealed the various ways teachers use the curriculum in classroom teaching. The way teachers use the curriculum not only impacts the effective implementation of the curriculum but, it also impacts the classroom instruction. This study intended to describe the teacher-tool relationship and the factors which shape this teacher-tool relationship. It particularly focused on ESL instruction in the context of Maldivian Key stage two teachers. Framing the study to include the unique characteristics of the island contexts, a qualitative multiple case study design informed by the interpretivist research paradigm was used in this study. Four schools across Maldives …

Within-Person Job Performance Variability Over Short Timeframes: Theory, Empirical Research, And Practice, Reeshad S. Dalal, Balca Alaybek, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We begin by charting the evolution of the dominant perspective on job performance from one that viewed performance as static to one that viewed it as dynamic over long timeframes (e.g., months, years, decades) to one that views it as dynamic over not just long but also short timeframes (e.g., minutes, hours, days, weeks)—and that accordingly emphasizes the within-person level of analysis. The remainder of the article is devoted to the newer, short-timeframe research on within-person variability in job performance. We emphasize personality states and affective states as motivational antecedents. We provide accessible reviews of relevant theories and highlight the …
Political Ideology Of The Board And Ceo Dismissal Following Financial Misconduct, Uisung Park, Warren Boeker, David Gomulya
Political Ideology Of The Board And Ceo Dismissal Following Financial Misconduct, Uisung Park, Warren Boeker, David Gomulya
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Why do some boards refuse to take serious action against CEOs who have committed financial misconduct? Past work has directed attention to the antecedents of misconduct while largely overlooking this question. The relatively few studies to examine it have typically revolved around the capacity of boards to take action, or their relationships to their CEOs. This study instead examines how the beliefs and values held by board members can influence their actions following financial misconduct. Focusing on political ideology, we argue and find that politically conservative boards are more likely to respond by dismissing the CEO than are liberal boards. …

Managing Clinic Variability With Same-Day Scheduling, Intervention For No-Shows, And Seasonal Capacity Adjustments, Kum Khiong Yang, Tugba Cayirli
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates demand and capacity strategiesfor managing clinic variability. These include (i) same-day scheduling tocontrol random walk-ins, (ii) no-show intervention, where the clinic callsadvance-booked patients a day before to identify and release canceled slots tosame-day patients, and (iii) adjustments to daily number of appointments foradvance-booked patients to match seasonal variations in same-day demand. Thesestrategies are tested over the individual-block/fixed-interval (IBFI) and theDome appointment rules. The resulting appointment systems are tested underscenarios with different levels of same-day demand, demand seasonality,no-shows and cost ratios. The goal is to minimize the weighted sum of patients’wait time and physician’s idle-time and overtime. Our …

This study examines the developmental influences of occupational environments on personality traits from childhood to adulthood. We test aspects of a theory of vocational and personality development, proposing that traits develop in response to work experience following corresponsive and noncorresponsive mechanisms. We describe these pathways in the context of situations of vocational gravitation and inhabitation. In a sample from the Hawaii personality and health cohort (N = 596), we examined associations of childhood and adulthood personality traits, with occupational environments profiled on the RIASEC model. Mediations tests confirmed that work influenced personality development from childhood to adulthood for Openness/Intellect. We …

Do Overall Dimension Ratings From Assessment Centres Show External Construct-Related Validity, Andreja Wirz, Klaus G. Melchers, Martin Kleinmann, Filip Lievens, Hubert Annen, Urs Blum, Pia V. Ingold
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
There have been repeated calls for an external construct validation approach to advance our understanding of the construct-related validity of assessment centre dimension ratings beyond existing internal construct-related validity findings. Following an external construct validation approach, we examined whether linking assessment centre overall dimension ratings to ratings of the same dimensions that stem from sources external to the assessment centre provides evidence for construct-related validity of assessment centre ratings. We used data from one laboratory assessment centre sample and two field samples. External ratings of the same dimensions stemmed from assessees, assessees’ supervisors, and customers. Results converged across all three …

Traditionally performance management has been described as a powerful tool in Human Resource Management (HRM) because it has potentially a wide array of application possibilities for various HR topics. However, the reality in practice is different. Various surveys reported that more than 90 percent of the performance management systems are unsuccessful. Further studies have shown that up to 75% of staff feel that their organization’s performance management system does not help them to improve their performance and is largely a waste of time (e.g., Capelli & Tavis, 2016; Pulakos, 2009). Economic analyses of the return on investment (as compared to …
The Role Of Endogenous And Exogenous Risk In Fdi Entry Choices, Peter J. Buckley, Liang Chen, L. Jeremy Clegg, Hinrich Voss
The Role Of Endogenous And Exogenous Risk In Fdi Entry Choices, Peter J. Buckley, Liang Chen, L. Jeremy Clegg, Hinrich Voss

FDI research has presented consistent evidence that firm experience moderates the effect of risk on entry in a new foreign market. This conclusion is contested by recent research. By revisiting the conceptualisation of risk by economists and behaviourists, we show that the proposed learning mechanism only applies to endogenous risk, not exogenous risk. As assessing endogenous risk involves self-evaluation of risk-reducing capability, it is posited that firms have differential tendencies to take such risks even when experience and ownership are accounted for. We find both observed and unobserved variations in firms' responses to endogenous risk, as opposed to exogenous risk.

Scholars find the journal publishing process exhilarating, baffling and frustrating in equal measure. The professional joy and excitement of receiving an acceptance letter following a long drawn-out process inwhich you have diligently responded to successive rounds of reviewers’ comments is probably only matched by a letter awarding a research grant. Contrast this to the sense of dejection and distress that accompanies a rejection letter. This is further exacerbated if the reviewers’ comments and decision appear to be harsh and if they make little sense. It is even more disappointing if the paper appears to have beenprogressing through different rounds of …

While previous studies focus on differences between family and nonfamily firms regarding CEO selection and executive compensation, this study investigates differences among family firms with different types of kinship ties. We find that, compared with family firms with close kinship ties, those with distant kinship ties are more likely to appoint a nonfamily CEO and to pay nonfamily executives lower salaries. This relationship is moderated by firm performance and family ownership. Based on evolutionary psychology, we propose that family firms with close versus distant kinships have different motivation levels to preserve socioemotional wealth.

Resource seeking, or the act of asking others for things that can help one attain one’s goals, is an important behavior within organizations due to the increasingly dynamic nature of work that demands collaboration and coordination among employees. Over the past two decades, there has been growing research in the organizational sciences on four types of resource seeking behaviors: feedback-, information-, advice-, and help-seeking. However, research on these four behaviors has existed in separate silos. We argue that there is value in recognizing that these behaviors reflect a common higher order construct (resource seeking), and in integrating the findings across …

Privacy At Work: A Review And A Research Agenda For A Contested Terrain, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Laurel H. Teo, Reeshad S. Dalal

Privacy in the workplace is a pivotal concern for employees and employers. Employees expect to be in control of the personal information and access they provide to the organization. Employers, however, expect extensive information regarding their employees as well as extensive access to employees’ presence. The chasm between these two often competing expectations has been magnified by regulatory and technological trends. We begin the review by integrating viewpoints from multiple disciplines to disentangle definitions of privacy and to delineate the privacy contexts of information privacy and work environment privacy. We then identify the key stakeholders of privacy in the workplace …

Identifying Barriers And Facilitators To Medication Adherence Among Underserved Adults With Hypertension In Miami-Dade County, Coeurlande Carry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
African American (AA) and Hispanic American (HA) adults with hypertension have a higher risk of developing stroke, heart disease, and diabetes and have higher mortality rates from related complications. In the United States, more than 50% of patients with chronic conditions do not take their medication as prescribed (Kelly et al., 2014). Nonadherence is known to contribute to complications and difficulties in managing chronic diseases like hypertension and increased morbidity and deaths (Ashoorkhani et al., 2018). This paper intends to address hypertension among AA and HA adults at Community Health of South Florida Incorporated (CHI) in Miami-Dade County.

In the United States, the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) is human papillomavirus (HPV) and although it is estimated that in the United States, 79 million people currently have HPV and an estimated 14 million people will become infected each year, vaccination rates to decrease HPV and associated cancers remains low (Jones et al., 2017). The Provider Education Achieving Community HPV Prevention (PEACH) program was created to enhance provider knowledge and understanding of the HPV vaccine and improve vaccination rates through a provider education program. The qualitative improvement project was conducted at a non-profit family planning clinic in West …
A Well-Being Program Grounded In Caring: Increasing Staff Satisfaction, Marie Rose S. Jasmin
A Well-Being Program Grounded In Caring: Increasing Staff Satisfaction, Marie Rose S. Jasmin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Over the last few decades, there has been a growing concern over the shortage and training of behavioral healthcare workers in the United States and more so over mental health workers' retention. Publicly funded mental health institutions have been the most affected by the high turnover rate of mental health staff, which increases operational costs by continually hiring and training new staff. Besides increasing health care costs, the high turnover rate creates an unstable work environment that negatively impacts the quality of care. However, when employees are empowered to do their job and care for themselves, they are more likely …

The project was based locally, in the primary care setting and the participants were clinic patients that were diagnosed with T2DM (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus). The clinical question is as follows: In (P) adult primary care patients (18-99 years) diagnosed with T2DM (ICD11.9) what is the effect of implementation of a diabetes screening quality of care checklist with provider and patient engagement (I) on patient outcomes and self-management (BMI, BP, LDL, HbA1c, …
Increasing The Recommendation Of Probiotics Through Provider And Patient Education For The Treatment Of Recurrent Vaginitis, Jasmine Sicard
Increasing The Recommendation Of Probiotics Through Provider And Patient Education For The Treatment Of Recurrent Vaginitis, Jasmine Sicard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Recurrent and chronic vaginitis affects women’s self-esteem, sex life and overall well-being. The underestimation of the impact of recurrent and chronic vaginitis on women warrants further research into interventions and treatments. While bacterial vaginosis and vulvocandidiasis are among the most common gynecological diagnoses associated with vaginitis, there is no clear resolution in the literature. The path to finding a treatment plan that provides better and longer lasting relief may lie within the addition of probiotics supplementation. The use of probiotics has been widely explored in topics pertaining to gut health, however creating a more balanced flora of bacteria within the …

Initiation Of The Reducing Antibiotic Misuse Prescribing (Ramp) Program To Enhance Evidence-Based Management Of Acute Bronchitis In The Urgent Care Setting., Doris Ortiz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The inappropriate use of antibiotics to treat non-bacterial infections has contributed to one of the public health problems resulting in antibiotic resistance (CDC, 2019). The purpose of this DNP project was to analyze providers’ awareness and beliefs regarding antibiotic use and resistance and to evaluate the effect of an antibiotic stewardship program on urgent care providers’ antibiotic prescribing for acute bronchitis. The overall goal is to decrease antibiotic resistant infections by reducing inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for a viral infection. To achieve this goal, a quality improvement initiative was conducted with five participating urgent care providers. Pre-RAMP intervention there was an …
