AbstractFlood hazard maps used to inform and build resilience in remote communities in the Terai region of southern Nepal are based on outdated and static digital elevation models (DEMs), which do not reflect dynamic river configuration or hydrology. Episodic changes in river course, sediment dynamics, and the distribution of flow down large bifurcation nodes can modify the extent of flooding in this region, but these processes are rarely considered in flood hazard assessment. Here, we develop a 2D hydrodynamic flood model of the Karnali River in the Terai region of west Nepal. A number of scenarios are tested examining different …

This paper examines occupants’ satisfaction of three BREEAM excellent certified buildings at Coventry University in the UK. Occupants’ satisfaction is evaluated against passive and active sustainable approaches used in these buildings to improve Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). This paper adopts a quantitative approach by running a seven-point rating scale questionnaire to obtain occupants’ overall satisfaction score in each building. A total of 180 occupants were surveyed to investigate occupants’ satisfaction of the thermal environment, indoor air quality, visual and acoustic environment during summer and winter. Aims To investigate the mechanism of hyperglycaemia in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) by modelling physiological insulin secretion. Methods 45 non-diabetic women with PCOS (defined by Rotterdam criteria) and 47 controls were studied. Insulin secretion was modelled from glucose and C-peptide concentrations during a 6-point oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and insulin resistance (IR) was determined by the Matsuda Insulin Sensitivity Index (ISI). Results (1). β-Cell Glucose Sensitivity (βCGS) is not intrinsically impaired in PCOS, but IR is increased. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a lymphocyte subset with intrinsic immunosuppressive properties that can be expanded in large numbers ex vivo and have been shown to prevent allograft rejection and promote tolerance in animal models. To investigate the safety, applicability, and biological activity of autologous Treg adoptive transfer in humans, we conducted an open-label, dose-escalation, Phase I clinical trial in liver transplantation. Patients were enrolled while awaiting liver transplantation or 6-12 months posttransplant. Circulating Tregs were isolated from blood or leukapheresis, expanded under good manufacturing practices (GMP) conditions, and administered intravenously at either 0.5-1 million Tregs/kg or 3-4.5 million Tregs/kg. …

Background Current evidence suggests that negative and stigmatising attitudes towards dementia may develop at a young age. There are a number of dementia education and awareness initiatives aimed at reducing stigma, though they have not been robustly evaluated to establish the impact on dementia attitudes or suitability in adolescent populations. This study explored the efficacy and satisfaction of one such initiative (Dementia Friends) in a British adolescent sample. Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of a therapeutic parenting program that targets parents of children aged 6 to 11 years identified as having behavioral and emotional difficulties. The intervention comprises two parts, delivered sequentially: a 10–12-week group-based program for all parents, and one-to-one sessions for up to 12 weeks with selected parents from the group-based element. Fish acute toxicity tests are conducted as part of regulatory hazard identification and risk-assessment packages for industrial chemicals and plant protection products. The aim of these tests is to determine the concentration which would be lethal to 50% of the animals treated. These tests are therefore associated with suffering in the test animals, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development test guideline 203 (fish, acute toxicity) studies are the most widely conducted regulatory vertebrate ecotoxicology tests for prospective chemical safety assessment. There is great scope to apply the 3Rs principles-the reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals-in this area of testing. …

Single parameter characterisation of the crack/notch tip field using fracture mechanics parameters like K, J, or CTOD has been extremely powerful in advancing predictive technologies for critical or subcritical crack growth. It has also become clear over the last decades that single parameter approaches have limitations particularly in dealing with crack growth phenomena arising from crack tip shielding, often resulting from the plastic enclave surrounding a crack. Type 304L stainless steel alloy is known to be highly resistant to solidification cracking. In the present case the particular design of the welded seams in a simple 200 litre water tank, along with the likely manner in which the closing welds were made, has led to an interesting example of interdendritic hot cracking in 304L GTA welded using a 309L filler metal. The paper presents a short introduction to hot cracking in austenitic stainless steels and uses the fractographic evidence to demonstrate that this form of cracking has occurred. Chronic lung disease is a huge, growing, but under reported problem in Africa. Following a survey in rural Uganda, which found 16% of the adult population had COPD, we developed a lung health programme aiming to raise awareness in the community of the risk factors for developing chronic lung disease and how to reduce the risks. A two-year train-the-trainer programme was conducted by healthcare workers (HCWs) in Masindi District, Uganda. Strategy and preliminary education materials were co-developed in a series of meetings with stakeholders including clinicians and community members. IntroductionValue-based healthcare delivery models have emerged to address the unprecedented pressure on long-term health system performance and sustainability and to respond to the changing needs and expectations of patients. Background: There has been a recent reported rise in prevalence of mental health problems among children in the United Kingdom, alongside increased referrals into specialist services. There is a need for up-to-date information regarding changing trends of young people’s mental health to allow for improved understanding and service planning. Objectives: This article aims to provide an overview of the current mental health and well-being of years 8, 9 and 11 secondary school–aged pupils from two large regions in the North of England.
