Indonesian Teachers Beliefs On The Gap Between Educational Research And Practice, Yoppy Wahyu Purnomo, Puri Pramudiani, Tian Abdul Aziz, Amrita Kaur, Siti Noor Ismail, Ishaq Nuriadin

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teachers' beliefs towards educational research has become one significant factor in explaining the gap between research and practice. The present study aimed at reviewing the scale to measure teachers' beliefs about the causes and problems related to research-based practices, describing beliefs that teachers appear to hold, and examining its relation to their demographic characteristics. The study involved 466 in-service teachers in Jakarta Province. The study employed the 24-item scale developed by Broekkamp and van Hout-Wolters (2007). The study indicated that 20 out of 24 items of the scale were valid and reliable to measure the teachers’ beliefs. The scale consisted …

Enhanced Mqtt Protocol By Smart Gateway, Hawraa R., Hamid M. Jan 2020

Enhanced Mqtt Protocol By Smart Gateway, Hawraa R., Hamid M.

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

The MQTT protocol is one of the Internet of Things (loT) application protocols. It is based on publishing/subscribing messaging patterns. This protocol uses a broker to manage the communication between the subscribers and the publishers over the internet. There were two problems associated with the implementation of this protocol. The first one, there are many sensors generating huge data using the very simple IoT architecture. These big data may lead to congestion on the internet and thus will cause several disadvantages such as decreasing throughput, packet loss, and delay, which in turn may affect the performance of the MQTT broker, …

Applying Quantitative Reasoning To Clarify Arc Measurements, David Glassmeyer, Daniel Barton Jan 2020

Applying Quantitative Reasoning To Clarify Arc Measurements, David Glassmeyer, Daniel Barton

Georgia Educational Researcher

The importance of reasoning quantitatively is reflected in both mathematics education research and mathematical standards for K-12 students. In this article, we detail how a quantitative reasoning framework can be used to help differentiate two quantities we have found students often struggle with: arc length and the measure of a central angle. We argue that taking the time to define all four components of a quantity can support students’ understanding of theorems involving these quantities.

Georgia’S Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program: Current Status, Web Presence, And Web Content, Donald L. Ariail, W. Ken Harmon, David Nwokocha

Georgia Educational Researcher

Senior citizens are becoming a larger and more significant part of the workforce as they desire to work longer. Companies have found these individuals bring valuable skills to the workplace; however, they frequently need to update those skills or pursue new degrees. Since 1976, Georgia has had a law granting senior citizens tuition waivers in the state’s public higher education institutions, thus allowing them the ability to take courses to update their skills. This study assessed the current status of the tuition waiver program by reviewing web sites of the 26 institutions in the University System of Georgia to determine …

Making Sense Of Georgia School Leader Evaluation: Climate, Engagement And The District Office, Bipul Singh, Matt Townsley

Georgia Educational Researcher

Assessment of principal effectiveness is a complex process due to the multidimensional nature of their job. Historically, a disproportionate significance has been placed on standardized assessment scores when evaluating school leaders, therefore states are beginning to emphasize other factors such as school climate in order to increase employee retention. This study investigated any correlation between leadership effectiveness, the staff perception of school climate, and employee engagement in a suburban Georgia school district’s 139 schools. An improved understanding of these constructs may assist principals and assistant principals modify their leadership practices to better meet the needs of their teachers. Results suggest …

Do Advanced Degrees Matter? A Multiphase Mixed-Methods Study To Examine Teachers’ Obtainment Of Advanced Degrees And The Impact On Student And School Growth, Mei-Lin Chang Dr., Ivan M. Jorrín Abellán, Jim Wright, Jihye Kim, Rachel E. Gaines Jan 2020

Do Advanced Degrees Matter? A Multiphase Mixed-Methods Study To Examine Teachers’ Obtainment Of Advanced Degrees And The Impact On Student And School Growth, Mei-Lin Chang Dr., Ivan M. Jorrín Abellán, Jim Wright, Jihye Kim, Rachel E. Gaines

Georgia Educational Researcher

Teacher quality has been found to offset the adverse effect of racial and socioeconomic differences in academic achievement; and teacher quality is often thought to be the product of a quality education. However, existing literature has produced mixed results regarding the relationship between student achievement and teachers’ possession of advanced degrees (ADs). Despite these mixed results, ADs are often the most efficient (if not the only) way for teachers to earn certification and salary upgrades. A longitudinal, multiphase mixed-methods explanatory study aimed to bridge shortcomings of existing research on the effects of teachers obtaining ADs. Associations between teacher credentials and …

Increasing College Entrance Testing Vocabulary For Secondary Students With High-Incidence Disabilities, Cynthia C. Massey, Margarett E. Shippen, Margaret M. Flores, Cindy Head

Georgia Educational Researcher

This study investigated the effects of an instructional technology device, specifically, a computer-based graphic organizer, called the Real-World Connections Vocabulary graphic organizer (Ellis, 2015), on vocabulary acquisition for college entrance testing skills of students with high-incidence disabilities. Although graphic organizers have been studied since the 1960’s, there is very little research regarding the effectiveness of computer-based graphic organizers when used with high school students with mild disabilities, and their benefit acquiring college entrance exam vocabulary knowledge, namely, the ACT exam. By means of a single-subject, multiple probe across participants design, this study demonstrated that a functional relation did exist between …

Contract Design In The Shadow Of Regulation, James Fallows Tierney Jan 2020

Contract Design In The Shadow Of Regulation, James Fallows Tierney

Nebraska Law Review

Does the threat of legal reform encourage companies to adopt high-quality contract terms that consumers ignore so that companies can use them in lobbying efforts to avoid reform? That may be an overlooked answer to a puzzle about consumer contracts. Consumers ignore most contract terms at the time of acceptance, so scholars usually expect companies to pick ignored terms of the lowest possible quality that courts will let them get away with. But some companies pick terms that are surprisingly high-quality. Courts do not require these terms that consumers ignore, so firms that pick them incur costs for seemingly little …

Smart Contracts And The Limits Of Computerized Commerce, Eric D. Chason Jan 2020

Smart Contracts And The Limits Of Computerized Commerce, Eric D. Chason

Nebraska Law Review

Having recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary, Bitcoin should be considered a qualified success. In October 2020, each unit1 was worth about $10,700, and the entire market capitalization was approximately $200 billion.2 Bitcoin is a significant economic force with sizable market value. Despite this success, however, Bitcoin has not been widely adopted as a method of payment, which was its intended use.3 By providing a template for a durable cryptocurrency, Bitcoin also blazed a path for other cryptocurrency projects. In terms of market capitalization and current importance, Ethereum is comfortably in second place.4 In October 2020, it had a market capitalization …

The Emerging Statutory Proximate Cause Doctrine, Sandra F. Sperino Jan 2020

The Emerging Statutory Proximate Cause Doctrine, Sandra F. Sperino

Nebraska Law Review

The year 2011 marked the birth of a new idea. The United States Supreme Court decided Staub v. Proctor Hospital and for the first time invoked common law proximate cause in the context of federal employment discrimination law.1 It is rare in jurisprudence to be present at the birth of an idea and then see that idea develop over its first decade. This Article charts the emerging proximate cause doctrine from its early days as a baby doctrine. Now, the doctrine is pre-adolescent, with all of the changes and turmoil that phase entails. Charting the first decade of this new …

Suspects Use Cell Phones, But So Do We: State V. Goynes And The Constitutional Dangers Of Boilerplate Search Warrants, Shayna Bartow

Nebraska Law Review

In Riley v. California, the United States Supreme Court held that a warrant is generally required for law enforcement to search a cell phone seized incident to a suspect’s arrest.1 Although this mandate seems clear,2 the Court did not outline what law enforcement must include in a cell phone search warrant to comport with the probable cause and particularity requirements of the Fourth Amendment.3 As a result, state courts are left to determine when cell phone search warrants satisfy the Fourth Amendment.4 In applying Riley and analyzing the validity of cell phone search warrants, the Nebraska Supreme Court has tried …

The Homesteading Rights Of Deserted Wives: A History, Hannah Haksgaard Jan 2020

The Homesteading Rights Of Deserted Wives: A History, Hannah Haksgaard

Nebraska Law Review

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the federal government of the United States distributed 270 million acres of land to homesteaders. The federal land-grant legislation allowed single women, but not married women, to partake in homesteading. Existing in a “legal netherworld” between single and married, deserted wives did not have clear rights under the federal legislation, much like deserted wives did not have clear rights in American marital law. During the homesteading period, many deserted wives litigated claims in front of the Department of the Interior, arguing they had the right to homestead. This is the first article …

Women’S Perspectives On Human Security: Violence, Environment, And Sustainability, Richard Matthew, Patricia A, Weitsman, Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv, Nora Davis, Tera Dornfeld

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Violent conflict, climate change, and poverty present distinct threats to women worldwide. Importantly, women are leading the way creating and sharing sustainable solutions.

Women’s security is a valuable analytical tool as well as a political agenda insofar as it addresses the specific problems affecting women’s ability to live dignified, free, and secure lives. First, this collection focuses on how conflict impacts women’s lives and well-being, including rape and gendered constructions of ethnicity, race, and religion. The book’s second section looks beyond the scope of large-scale violence to examine human security in terms of environmental policy, food, water, health, and economics. …

Credibility Analysis Of Customer Reviews On Amazon: A Design Science Approach, Jun Liu, Piyush Vyas Jan 2020

Credibility Analysis Of Customer Reviews On Amazon: A Design Science Approach, Jun Liu, Piyush Vyas

Research & Publications

This research examines the problem of identification and elimination of malicious customer reviews on Amazon.com. Online customer reviews are increasingly considered crowd-sourced consumer opinions that significantly influence online purchasing decisions (Hu, 2012). However, most current approaches to detecting fake reviews rely on either manual assessment of the reviews or the use of the mechanical Amazon Turks service (Mukherjee, 2014; Munzel, 2015). Manual assessment of customer reviews is not scalable in practice, leaving the quality of the current approaches to detect fake reviews questionable. The primary goal of our research is to develop a model of credibility analysis that automatically classifies …

A Gamification Technique To Increase Engagement In Asynchronous Online Discussions, Brian Bovee, Thomas Jernejcic, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Engaging students in online discussions is difficult. This paper presents a method for gamifying asynchronous online discussions in order to increase student engagement. The method was evaluated in two sections of an online, graduate business information systems course which were identical with the exception that one course added a game element to the discussion board. Two forms of engagement were evaluated using different methods. Overall, the result of the gamified discussion board was an improvement in both the behavioral and cognitive engagement of students participating with the discussion. Our findings yield important theoretical and practical implications on how to successfully …
