Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Dyspnea is the subjective feeling of breathing discomfort, which is a significant problem for patients with heart and respiratory disease and also an important determinant of exercise tolerance, quality of life, and mortality in various diseases. Most of the scales are not enough to investigate the multidimensional effects of dyspnea; therefore, the Multidimensional Dyspnea Profile (MDP) was developed and validated in many languages. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the MDP into Turkish and investigate the psychometric properties of this adapted version in outpatients with respiratory disease. Materials and methods: The MDP was translated and culturally adapted …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Determining the epidemiological characteristics of M. bovis strains isolated from human and animal tuberculosis cases will assist in taking more appropriate and effective control measures in controlling tuberculosis originating from animals. Materials and methods: In this study, 32 M. bovis isolates of animal origin and 10 of human origin were isolated and identified in the Çukurova region between March 2011 and June 2012. The 12-locus MIRU-VNTR and spoligotyping methods were used. Results: Six different patterns were determined by spoligotyping and 10 by MIRU-VNTR. When both methods were used together, the number of patterns was found to be 28; MIRU4, …

Iron Homeostasis Is Altered In Response To Hypoxia And Hypothermic Preconditioning Inbrain Glial Cells, Lati̇fe Arzu Aral, Mehmet Ali̇ Ergün, Ayşe Başak Engi̇n, Alp Özgün Börcek, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Altered iron metabolism is one of the pathophysiological mechanisms occurring during hypoxic injuries in the central nervous system. Proper homeostasis of cellular iron is regulated by iron import, storage, and export proteins that prevent excess iron overload or iron starvation in cells. Therapeutic hypothermia is an approved treatment for hypoxic ischemia in newborns, but the underlying molecular mechanism is still unknown. We studied the effects of hypoxia, preceded with preconditioning, on the iron homeostasis of glial cells, known as a major actor in the inflammatory process during perinatal brain injury. Materials and methods: Primary microglia and astrocytes in culture …

Antioxidative Effects Of Uridine In A Neonatal Rat Model Of Hyperoxic Brain Injury, Nevi̇n Al, Ayşen Çakir, Cansu Sevi̇nç, Mehmet Cansev, Tüli̇n Alkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Premature birth is a major problem that results in an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. The management of such infants consists of supraphysiological oxygen therapy, which affects brain development due, in part, to the deterioration caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). We showed previously that exogenously administered uridine provides neuroprotection in a neonatal rat model of hyperoxic brain injury. Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of uridine on ROS in the same setting. Materials and methods: Hyperoxic brain injury was induced by subjecting a total of 53 six-day-old rat pups to 80% …

The Role And Importance Of Auxiliary Tests In Differential Diagnosis In Patients Withmildly High Basal 17-Oh-Progesterone Levels In The Evaluation Of Hirsutism, Taner Demi̇rci̇, Hasret Cengi̇z, Ceyhun Varim, Sedat Çeti̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In the differential diagnosis of hirsutism, early follicular basal 17-OH-progesterone levels sometimes overlap with the diagnosis of late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia (LOCAH) and other causes of hyperandrogenism. This study aims to investigate the role of some common tests and clinical findings in differential diagnosis in such cases. Materials and methods: One hundred seventy-five female patients with hirsutism and mildly high initial 17-OH-progesterone levels (2-10 ng/mL) were included in the study. The cases were divided into three groups according to their diagnosis: LOCAH (n = 16, mean age = 26.1 ± 6.9), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (n = 122, …

Peripheral Axonal Excitability In Hemiplegia Related To Subacute Stroke, Zeynep Turan, Murat Zi̇nnuroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aims to investigate peripheral nerve excitability in patients with subacute stroke. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 29 stroke patients within the subacute period and 29 healthy controls using QTRAC software and TRONDNF protocol. The threshold electrotonus, recovery cycle, stimulus-response, strength-duration, and current-threshold relationships were recorded. Results: The membrane was more hyperpolarized, and excitability was decreased in the hemiplegic side. The impairment of inward rectifying channel function, degree of hyperpolarization, and decrease of excitability were directly related to the Brunnstrom stages, which were more pronounced in lower stages. Conclusion: The lower motor neurons were affected …

Semi-Automated Segmentation Of The Lateral Periventricular Regions Using Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Albert M Isaacs, Rowland H Han, Christopher D Smyser, David D Limbrick, Joshua S Shimony Jan 2020

Semi-Automated Segmentation Of The Lateral Periventricular Regions Using Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Albert M Isaacs, Rowland H Han, Christopher D Smyser, David D Limbrick, Joshua S Shimony

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The lateral ventricular perimeter (LVP) of the brain is a critical region because in addition to housing neural stem cells required for brain development, it facilitates cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bulk flow and functions as a blood-CSF barrier to protect periventricular white matter (PVWM) and other adjacent regions from injurious toxins. LVP injury is common, particularly among preterm infants who sustain intraventricular hemorrhage or post hemorrhagic hydrocephalus and has been associated with poor neurological outcomes. Assessment of the LVP with diffusion MRI has been challenging, primarily due to issues with partial volume artifacts since the LVP region is in close proximity …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Pandemics have had very important consequences in human history. Lots of people lost their lives and countries have been intensively affected in terms of socioeconomic problems. Unfortunately, avoidance of pandemics and limiting the spread are still currently not always possible. Maybe the most important factor for this is the increasing frequency of traveling. Increasing airline traveling rate also increases the rate of spread. Global organizations like the World Health Organization and United Nations are trying to play a supreme role over the countries. Pandemics do not have borders; therefore, efforts should be given globally, definition of pandemic should be established …
