Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The shifting of autophagy, a catabolic process for cell survival, toward death could be a potential mode of anti-cancer drug action. In addition, autophagic cell death (ACD) is an alternative death mechanism in resistant malignant cancer cells. This study, we demonstrated how PE5, a stilbene compound, exhibits potent ACD-promoting activity and apoptosis in lung cancer cells that may offer an opportunity for novel cancer treatment. It was found that PE5 exerted a higher toxic effect toward cancer cells compared with its effect on normal cells. Interestingly, the cell death caused by PE5 was found to be concomitant with dramatic autophagy …

Characterization Of Carbon Storage Regulator A (Csra) Homolog As A Global Gene Regulator In Leptospira Spp., Theerapat Phoka
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Leptospira spp. consist of non-pathogenic and pathogenic species. The bacteria can survive in diverse environments and therefore need mechanisms of rapid adaptation to environmental changes. However, molecular mechanisms of stress response in Leptospira are not fully understood. Carbon Storage Regulator A (CsrA) is a well-characterized, conserved, post-transcriptional global regulator that plays a critical role in response to environmental changes in many bacteria. CsrA has been reported to regulate several pathways such as glycogen metabolism, motility, biofilm formation, and virulence-associated genes. Based on available genomics data of Leptospira spp., we found putative csrA homolog, approximately 50% similarity with csrA of E. …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Increased mortality and antifungal drug resistance of non-albicans Candidiasis patients have become an alarming in health problems nowadays, whereas profound knowledge of their pathogenesis mechanisms is still limited. The immune responses of innate and adaptive immunity play a crucial role in protecting from Candida infections. Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most notable because of their roles in bridging an innate immunity and specific adaptive immunity to eliminate fungal invasion. It is little known about DC functions in non-albicans Candida (NACs) infections. Besides, there is less study on evaluating the DC properties upon the interaction between DCs and NACs-derived ß-glucans. Therefore, …

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (Nets) Formation Of Fcgr2b Deficient Mice In Lupus Mouse Model With Ischemic Reperfusion Injury, Wilasinee Saisorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by renal ischemic reperfusion (I/R) is the most prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality in patients. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are important for the progression of lupus nephritis after renal I/R injury. Because neutrophils are the first immune cell that respond to tissue damage, neutrophils might be an important cell that determines renal I/R injury. Additionally, NET components, including cell-free DNA, histone, nucleosome, and cytoplasmic protein compartment release the auto-antigens that accelerate lupus disease activity. Therefore, this project aimed to compare NETs formation in several internal organs following renal I/R injury in Fcgr2b deficient (Fcgr2b-/-) …
Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang
Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. However, recent researchers, i.e. Thiamtawan and Pongpairoj …

High-Mobility Group Box 1 (Hmgb1) Mediates Dna Methylation Preventing Genomic Instability, Papitchaya Watcharanurak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Global DNA hypomethylation promotes genomic instability through the accumulation of DNA damage and resulted in an increasing rate of mutation. To stabilize the genome, cells possess an epigenetic mechanism to reduce DNA tension that causes DNA damages, named Replication-Independent Endogenous DNA Double-Strand Breaks (RIND-EDSBs). Due to their biological roles, this type of physiologic EDSBs act as youth-associated genomic-stabilizing DNA gaps (Youth-DNA-GAPs). They are localized within methylated genome and maintained by non-histone HMGB1 and SIRT1 proteins. Reduction of RIND-EDSBs was found in hypomethylated genome, including cancer and aging. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the role of HMGB1-mediated DNA methylation in …
Learning-Based Approach For Visual Quality Enhancement On High Efficiency Video Coding Standard, Sovann Chen
Learning-Based Approach For Visual Quality Enhancement On High Efficiency Video Coding Standard, Sovann Chen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) has dramatically enhanced the coding efficiency compared to the previous video coding standard, H.264/AVC. However, the existing rate control updates its parameters according to a fixed initialization, which can cause error prediction of bit allocation to each coding tree unit (CTU) in frames. In this work, a learning-based mapping between rate control parameters and video contents is proposed to achieve an accurate target bit rate and good video quality. The proposed framework contains two main structural codings, including spatial and temporal coding. We initiate an effective learning-based particle swarm optimization for both spatial and temporal …

The Deactivation Of Gamma-Alumina Based Catalyst During Aqueous Phase Reaction Using Density Function Theory, Phakaorn Aphichoksiri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nowadays, biomass conversion has become a more attractive process to produce fuels and various high-value chemicals from biological materials. From many kinds of catalysts, the metal-supported gamma-alumina (γ-Al2O3) is a widely used catalyst for various transformation processes, especially in the aqueous phase reaction. Typically, coke formation on γ-Al2O3 causes catalyst deactivation in the thermal reaction process. Moreover, incorporation of aqueous phase medium initiates hydroxylation of γ-Al2O3 and phase transformation of γ-AlOOH, leading to the catalyst deactivation. Not only coke formation and phase transformation are the cause of catalytic deactivation, but the oxygen vacancy, changing the activity of the catalyst, should …

Deactivation Of Manganese Dioxide Electrocatalyst In Zinc-Air Batteries Studied Via Density Functional Theory, Puwit Buapin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is the effective electrocatalysts used as a cathode for Zn-Air batteries (ZABs) accounted for the acceleration of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). There are various studies on the ORR activity of MnO2 rather than deactivation mechanisms. In this work, the deactivation mechanisms of α-MnO2 and β-MnO2 was investigated by density functional theory and computational hydrogen electrode. It was found that, the phase transformation from the α-MnO2 (211) to β-MnO2 (110) shows that the catalyst deactivation is due to the higher overpotential of β-MnO2 (110) making electrocatalyst efficiency low. For Ov surfaces, it illustrates that the performance is …
