Black Women College Students, Impostor Phenomenon, Stereotypes, And Mental Health: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Lincoln Hill
Black Women College Students, Impostor Phenomenon, Stereotypes, And Mental Health: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Lincoln Hill
Dissertations
The present research project expands on impostor phenomenon (IP) literature by incorporating an intentional intersectional framework using two studies to determine if IP mediates (explains) the relationship between group stereotype threat susceptibility and mental health outcomes for Black women college students attending predominantly White institutions. by including a diary study to ascertain the frequency, intensity, and triggers for impostor beliefs, this project provides support for context dependent impostorism. It provides clarification around what types of situations precede the endorsement of heightened impostor beliefs for Black women college students. This project answers the following research questions amongst a sample of Black …
Lewis Acid-Carbonyl Solution Interactions And Their Implications In Catalytic Systems, Carly Soren Hanson
Lewis Acid-Carbonyl Solution Interactions And Their Implications In Catalytic Systems, Carly Soren Hanson
Dissertations
The utilization of Lewis acids to activate substrates containing carbonyls is ubiquitous in organic synthetic methods. in order to facilitate the development of novel reaction pathways and understand existing methods, it is necessary to determine the solution interactions between Lewis acids and Lewis bases. Historically, the characterization of the interactions of Lewis pairs has relied on solid state infrared (IR) spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, as well as in situ NMR. I have developed a method utilizing in situ IR spectroscopy and solution conductivity towards the identification of the solution structures formed when a range of carbonyl compounds are combined with …
Utopian Discourse In Contemporary Speculative Fiction, Casey Alan Jergenson
Utopian Discourse In Contemporary Speculative Fiction, Casey Alan Jergenson
Dissertations
I argue in this dissertation that utopianism is a vibrant form of cultural production in the post-Cold War period, despite the paucity of recent texts depicting €œgood€ societies. Most literary historical accounts of the genre place the decline of the utopian narrative in the early twentieth century, with a brief resurgence in the 1960s and 1970s. Contemporary culture has since become inundated with dystopian and post-apocalyptic visions of the future. If we take this generic distribution at face-value, it seems symptomatic of the utopian idea's retreat from cultural production since the 1980s. Influential critics have resisted this narrative by demonstrating …
Seed Conflicts In Colombia: Ethnorace, Territory, And Violence, Nathalia Hernandez Vidal
Seed Conflicts In Colombia: Ethnorace, Territory, And Violence, Nathalia Hernandez Vidal
Dissertations
This dissertation follows the theoretical approach of the food regime scholarship (Friedmann and McMichael, 1989) to understand the process of privatization of seeds and the social and material processes associated with it, known as the Corporate Seed Regime (CSR). the CSR is a transnational regime of governance over the bios (life) born in the post- World-War II period, imagined and enforced by and through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Bank (McMichael, 2013). in this work, I explain how a corporate seed regime (CSR) has taken form in Colombia. Extant sociological studies on the formation of CSRs explain …

As the role of an elementary and middle school principal in Illinois is recognized for having a significant impact on student achievement and the success of a school community a greater emphasis is placed on the evaluation and professional development of the principals in Illinois. with the passage of Senate Bill 7 in Illinois, the requirements for principal evaluations changed. the purpose of the research is to understand the actual versus the perceived use of the ISLLC principal leadership standards and whether the implementation of SB7 is having an impact on principal leadership. Participants of this study included a survey …
Economy Of Condescension: John Henry Newman's Trinitarian Theology, Matthew Kemp
Economy Of Condescension: John Henry Newman's Trinitarian Theology, Matthew Kemp
Dissertations
John Henry Newman (1801-90) did not write any systematic treatise on the doctrine of the Trinity, yet it consistently pervades his theological writings. Not only does he frequently treat the doctrine directly, but it also influences how he writes about other areas of theology, so that there is arguably a Trinitarian €œframe€ around all of Newman's thought. Yet there has been surprisingly little scholarship on Newman's theology of the Trinity. This is problematic because it leaves unexplored a major component of his thinking, one that seems essential to a fuller understanding of his theology. in this dissertation I provide a …

Three-hundredeighty- four participants completed the either a mortality salience or control (where mortality was not salient) induction, a group membership induction, a personal norms of reciprocity scale, one round of a single-shot trust game (a measure of positive reciprocity), and one round of a singleshot ultimatum game (a measure of negative reciprocity). During the trust game, an ostensible interaction partner received a small monetary endowment, and contributed either that entire endowment or less than half of it (keeping …
The Impact Of Positive School Culture On School Success: A Principal's Self-Study Of Transformational Leadership, Sean Mcnichols
The Impact Of Positive School Culture On School Success: A Principal's Self-Study Of Transformational Leadership, Sean Mcnichols
Dissertations
The purpose of this self-study was to examine how I, as a school principal and transformational leader, was able to support the development of positive relationships that impacted school culture and sustained student achievement. Reculturing a school involves the examination of beliefs, expectations, and assumptions for the purpose of school change that can facilitate a collective sense of purpose (DuFour & Burnette, 2002: Fullan, 2005). to do this, I focused on social and emotional learning while incorporating opportunities for school staff, parents, community members and student's voices to be heard through group meetings and forums. the analysis of this study …

Together, these studies aim to inform the development of evidenced-based interventions that target anxious arousal in …
Distinct Roles For Carbohydrate And Protein Receptors In Coronavirus Infection, Enya Qing
Distinct Roles For Carbohydrate And Protein Receptors In Coronavirus Infection, Enya Qing
Dissertations
Coronaviruses (CoVs) are common human and animal pathogens. in humans, four endemic CoV species together account for one third of mild respiratory infections worldwide. More severe and frequently fatal respiratory pathologies are caused by recent CoV outbreaks that resulted from occasional zoonotic spillover from animal CoV reservoirs, namely, SARS-CoV in 2002, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019. Because CoVs threaten global health, any chance of relieving CoV's threat on human populations would rely heavily on our understanding of the mechanistic requirements for CoV tropism, whose major determinant is at the level of viral entry. CoVs have evolved to use …
Job Satisfaction, Burnout, Occupational Intentions, And Stress Coping Styles Among Illinois School Psychologists, Courtney Ratliff
Job Satisfaction, Burnout, Occupational Intentions, And Stress Coping Styles Among Illinois School Psychologists, Courtney Ratliff
Dissertations
There is a long-standing shortage of school psychologists (Curtis, Hunley, & Grier, 2004; McIntosh, 2004; Fagan, 2004; Castillo, Curtis, & Tan, 2014). a shortage that allows the social, emotional, and academic needs of American school-children to go under served. to understand better the working conditions that may contribute to this shortage, a sample of Illinois school psychologists were surveyed. the aim of this study was fourfold. First, to collect rates of job satisfaction, the experience of burnout, and the five-year occupational intentions of school psychologists. Second, to measure the rates of occupational stress coping styles. Third, to build a model, …

Investigating Exclusionary Discipline: Teachers, Deficit Thinking, And Root Cause Analysis, Kelsie N. Reed
Dissertations
This study sought to examine school-related predictors of exclusionary discipline practices and racial disproportionality in exclusionary discipline via a mixed-methodology approach involving a quantitative analysis of contextual factors, and a qualitative/quantitative examination of the role of teacher perception in contributing to exclusionary discipline patterns. Relying on publicly available school discipline data, Phase I involved a multiple regression analysis of 200 school districts that were purposefully selected within a state in the midst of school discipline reform to examine the impact of district size, student demographics, teacher demographics, and school funding in predicting the most extreme patterns of exclusionary discipline usage. …
An Ecological Model Of Transmission Of Depression: Risk And Protective Factors For Mexican Immigrant Mothers And Children Living In Poverty, Anna Maria Ros
An Ecological Model Of Transmission Of Depression: Risk And Protective Factors For Mexican Immigrant Mothers And Children Living In Poverty, Anna Maria Ros
Dissertations
Family poverty has been found to predict a number of negative outcomes across a multitude of domains of child development, including health, education, language and cognitive development (Reiss, 2013; Yoshikawa, Aber & Beardslee, 2012). Furthermore, studies examining differing prevalence rates of mental illness depending on socioeconomic status have found that children liv-ing in poverty in the United States are between two and three times as likely to meet criteria for a psychiatric disorder when compared to their higher SES counterparts (McLaughlin et al, 2011; Reiss, 2013). Family poverty has been found to predict internalizing psychopathology risk across childhood and adolescence, …

Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Case Management Model, Abigail Salat
Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Case Management Model, Abigail Salat
Dissertations
EXPLORING the EFFECTIVENESS of a CASE MANAGEMENT MODEL IDEa requires special education students receive a free and appropriate education with specialized instruction in K-12 schools. While guidance related to what students are legally entitle to is readily available, little to no guidance related to how systems within schools can best support teachers is available. Special Education teachers are noted to have more difficult, demanding, and stressful roles within schools, which can lead to higher levels of burnout (Bettini et al., 2017). the Case Management model is one manner of service delivery, which allows for special education teachers to specialize in …
Developing Caspase-1 Biosensors To Monitor Inflammation In Vitro And In Vivo, Sarah Talley
Developing Caspase-1 Biosensors To Monitor Inflammation In Vitro And In Vivo, Sarah Talley
Dissertations
Inflammation is central to the pathogenesis of numerous human diseases. in many contexts, inflammation drives immune responses which are critical to protection against many pathogens. However, uncontrolled inflammation can drive the pathology of numerous diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, intestinal disorders, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. a primary mediator of inflammation is the inflammasome complex, which drives the release of inflammatory mediators through caspase-1 activation. Our goal was to develop a tool that would allow us to monitor caspase-1 activation in vitro and ultimately in vivo. to this end, we employed a circularly permuted form of luciferase in which the N- and …
Storefront: Local Businesses Acting Locally In Two Chicago Neighborhoods, Steven Tuttle
Storefront: Local Businesses Acting Locally In Two Chicago Neighborhoods, Steven Tuttle
Dissertations
Local businesses occupy an important role in society and the American imagination. Entrepreneurialism is valorized and €œmain street€ is often used as a populist shorthand in discussions of €œregular Americans.€ While sociologists and the lay public often identify the opening of new, higher-end businesses as an indication of impending gentrification, few sociological studies examine commercial gentrification or call into question relationships between local businesses and urban communities. This is a study of the roles and experiences of local businesses in two gentrifying neighborhoods in Chicago. Drawing upon ethnographic observation and qualitative interviews, I examine the role of local businesses in …

Development Of Methods For The Removal Of Selected Pollutants From Several Matrices And Identification Of Unknown Pollutants Adsorbed Onto Plastics Collected From Freshwater, Kathryn Marie Renyer
Dissertations
Plastic pollution represents one of greatest anthropogenic threats to the environment. Five to ten billion tons of plastic are manufactured every year. Currently, Earth's ecosystem is contaminated with billions of tons of plastic debris, much of which cannot be recycled. Over time, this plastic debris decomposes into small particles. Small plastic particles are known to adsorb toxic compounds in marine environments. My research is concerned with creating novel methods for the detection and quantification of selected persistent organic pollutants from several media. Specifically, I developed methods for the detection and quantification of endosulfan sulfate (ESS) from Lumbricus terrestris tissue and …

Targeting Epha2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Uncovering Its Therapeutic Potential And Beyond, Hao Wang
Targeting Epha2 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Uncovering Its Therapeutic Potential And Beyond, Hao Wang
Dissertations
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) remains one of the deadliest malignancies worldwide. One major obstacle to treatment is a lack of effective molecular-targeted therapies. Here, we identify EphA2 receptor tyrosine kinase as a clinically relevant target for HCC. EphA2 expression and signaling is enriched in human HCC and associates with poor prognosis. Loss of EphA2 suppressed the initiation and growth of HCC in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, CRISPR/CAS9 mediated EphA2 inhibition significantly delayed tumor development in a genetically-engineered murine model of HCC. Mechanistically, we discovered that targeting EphA2 simultaneously suppresses both JAK1/STAT3 and AKT signaling, two separate oncogenic pathways in HCC. …
The Patient Speaks: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Patient's Experience Of Psychoanalysis, Katherine Williams

Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to learn more about the experience of student activism through the eyes, ears, and narratives of women of color in predominantly White higher education institutions. Using an adapted theoretical framework of critical feminist agency, I conducted interviews and focus groups with women of color whom represent the past, present, and future of student activist experiences on campus. Their stories and knowledge affirmed the historical significance of student activism in higher education, and more notably, provided additional critical perspectives towards the development and re-imagination of leadership, agency, and institutional structures in colleges and universities. …
Bridging The In Between: A Portrait Of Asian American Student Affairs Professionals In Asian American Cultural Centers, Joliana Yee
Dissertations
Although the first Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) on a U.S. college campus came about as a result of student activism in the late 1960s and 33 other AACCs have since been established at higher education institutions across the country, very little has been documented in higher education scholarship about the Asian American Student Affairs Professionals (SAPros) who work within these unique institutional resources. While concerted efforts have been made to diversify the student body demographic at predominantly white institutions (PWIs), the negative impact of campus racial dynamics on students of color have nevertheless persisted and extant literature on the …
