Planar Motion Control Of A Cube Satellite Using Cold Gas Thrusters, Christian Lozoya
Planar Motion Control Of A Cube Satellite Using Cold Gas Thrusters, Christian Lozoya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This Thesis presents a mathematical model developed for the computational simulation ofCubeSat movement using four thrusters that permit uniaxial translation and rotation. Arbitrary functions are fit to boundary conditions to simulate the force, acceleration, velocity, and displacement of the CubeSat along a plane. The model is used to derive a motion control algorithm assuming constant pressure and mass. A single model describes both translation and rotation. This Thesis also explores the relationship between propellant consumption and the time required to complete a displacement implied by the model.

Optimization Of Regional Scale Numerical Weather Prediction & Air Quality Model For The Paso Del Norte Region, Suhail Mahmud
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Improvement of the Accuracy and Forecast capability of the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and Air Quality Models (AQM) are critical issues in today's scientific study of Meteorology and Air Pollution. The models for these predictions are dependent on topography, climate, initial and boundary conditions, domain size, and computational efficiency. Different techniques such as Data Assimilation, Ensemble Methods, Increased Computing Capacity to achieve higher model resolution, and Improved Physics Schemes can be used to address this problem. In this study, the NWP models, the Weather and Research Forecast (WRF), and the HYSPLIT models, were enhanced for the Paso Del Norte …

ABSTRACTSince the at middle of 20th century when most African states begin to gain political independence from colonialist, one phenomenon that was over warmly accepted is that of regional integration, both political, social, and economic. Regional integration was believed to pertinent for attaining desired goals and objectives set, thus its acceptance by both policymakers, academic, experts as well as ordinary citizens all over the continent. Despite acceptance and existence of regional economic blocs, as put by the United Nations Commission for Africa (2010) Report, intra-trading within African continent is the lowest World over when compared to other regions, say Asia, …
Development Of An Automated Ultrasonic Wire Embedding Process For Use With Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing And Rapid Electronics Fabrication, Nikki L. Martinez
Development Of An Automated Ultrasonic Wire Embedding Process For Use With Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing And Rapid Electronics Fabrication, Nikki L. Martinez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Polymers have been used in Additive Manufacturing (AM) by many industries for rapid prototyping. Parts created using polymer AM however are known to be relatively expensive thus limiting them to small volume production and making them inapplicable for mass production, while their inherent porous and anisotropic properties make them mechanically inferior to parts made using traditional methods such as injection molding. As projects demand more efficient designs, and at the same time ask for more complex features, AM, combined with other manufacturing processes, like Ultrasonic Wire embedding, can streamline and consolidate assemblies. In the realm of composite and multifunctional assemblies, …
Towards The Development Of A Cohesive Design-Driven Code Quality Metrics, Omar Masmali
Towards The Development Of A Cohesive Design-Driven Code Quality Metrics, Omar Masmali
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Software complexity is an indicator of expected future maintenance and sustainability. Excessive complexity suggests that software or a component of software has a design or implementation that is difficult to understand, modify, and maintain. Several complexity measures have been developed by researchers to identify and characterize degrees of complexity. Code smells are widely adopted as indicators for low code quality. Many studies have adopted fixed threshold values for code smells and other quality metrics. These fixed threshold values often ignore the uniqueness of each software system and the unique roles each component play. Moreover, these thresholds are largely fixed throughout …

Discovery Of Glycan-Based Biomarkers For Cutaneous Leishmaniasis And Chagas Disease By Reversed Immunoglycomics, Alba Lucia Montoya
Discovery Of Glycan-Based Biomarkers For Cutaneous Leishmaniasis And Chagas Disease By Reversed Immunoglycomics, Alba Lucia Montoya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Protozoa are the causative agents of a number of diseases that affect humans and mammalian animals. Several forms of leishmaniasis are caused by different Leishmania species (Leishmania spp.), while Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). These members of the Trypanosomatidae family have characteristic glycoconjugates broadly distributed on their cell surfaces, which can be useful for diagnosis and follow-up of chemotherapy for the diseases.
Leishmania spp. expresses an “exotic” surface glycocalyx mainly composed of a number of glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins, a complex lipophosphoglycan (LPG) and a family of low-molecular mass glycoinositol-phospholipids (GIPLs), some of them …
An Autoethnography Of A Non-Traditional Student Veteran A Journey Of Transition To The Present, Ruben Paquian
An Autoethnography Of A Non-Traditional Student Veteran A Journey Of Transition To The Present, Ruben Paquian
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
There is a lack of research on career military student veterans in higher education. I use a layered-account autoethnographic approach (Adams et al., 2011) to recount my experience as a career military student veteran. Having spent 30-years in uniform, I felt that my perspectives could help both student veterans and career military student veterans traverse through the world of higher education while providing staff and faculty a better understanding of how career military veterans see the world. In general, veterans have difficulty trying to keep their military identity separate from their student identity. Military identities are more engrained in veterans …

Testing The Reliability And Flexibility Of Digitizers Adapting The Rf/If Signals Over Ip Applications Using A Testbed Platform, Jose Carlos Sandoval
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As physical constraints can be challenging for Radio Frequency (RF) telemetry, a new solution has been exploited to support the demand for RF transmissions. As frequency spectrum gets crowded with more technologies, a solution to a reliable transmission is needed. Digitizers can mitigate many of the physical constraints in order to achieve a successful RF transmission. The method includes the conversion of the RF signals to be sent over IP networks, transmit and de-convert the signal. IP networks will mitigate many disadvantages over a regular signal transmission. The authority in charge to allocate frequency bands is the Federal Communications Commission …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Deep-UV (DUV) supercontinuum (SC) sources based on gas-filled hollow-core fibers constitute perhaps the most viable solution towards ultrafast, compact, and tunable lasers in the UV spectral region, which can even also extend into the mid-infrared (IR). Noise and spectral stability of such broadband sources are key parameters that define their true potential and suitability towards real-world applications. In order to investigate the spectral stability and noise levels in these fiber-based DUV sources, we generate an SC spectrum that extends from 180 nm (through phase-matched dispersive waves - DWs) to 4 μm by pumping an argon-filled hollow-core anti-resonant fiber at a …

Language Ideologies And Identities: Beliefs And Practices Of College Level Spanish Students And An Instructor In A Spanish Heritage Language Classroom, Viridiana Vidana
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research on Heritage Language Learners (HLLs) began in the 1970s when the term heritage languages originated in Canada (Cummins, 2005); later in the 1990s, the subfield of heritage language education was created. HLLs are defined as “students who [are] raised in a home where a non-English language is spoken, who speak or at least understand the language, and who [are] in some degree bilingual in that language and English” (Valdés, 2001, p.38). From its inception, research on the education of HLLs has focused heavily on linguistic aspects (Beaudrie & Fairclough, 2012; Colombi & Alarcón, 1997; Potowski & Carreira, 2010), however, …
Investigating Approaches For Balancing Durability And Stability Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures, Denis Iran Vieira Souza
Investigating Approaches For Balancing Durability And Stability Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures, Denis Iran Vieira Souza
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Improving the durability and long-term performance of the asphalt concrete (AC) has become a major concern, especially with the increase in the use of recycled materials, warm mix asphalt additives and modified binders. To balance the mechanical properties durability and stability of AC mixtures, mix design approaches that incorporate performance tests are needed. This Thesis presents an experimental evaluation of different mix design approaches to balance the mechanical properties of AC mixtures. The current volumetric-based design method was enhanced with performance-based analysis that specifies parameters from the overlay tester, Hamburg wheel tracking device and indirect tension tests. Four typical Superpave …
Spatially Adaptive Estimation Of Spectrum, Yi None Xie
Spatially Adaptive Estimation Of Spectrum, Yi None Xie
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
When analyzing a stationary time series, one of the questions we are often interested in is how to estimate its spectrum. Many approaches have been proposed to this end. Most are focused on smoothing the periodogram using a single smoothing parameter across all Fourier frequencies. In this paper, we smooth the log periodogram by placing a spatially adaptive prior called the dynamic shrinkage prior, so that varying degrees of smoothing may be applied to different intervals of Fourier frequencies, resulting in less biased estimates of the spectrum. Further research will extend this approach to spectral estimation for nonstationary time series.
Border Crossing On Sacred Grounds: An Indigenized Decolonized Educational Research Paradigm For Use In Contemporary Globalized Schooling Systems, Estella Valles
Border Crossing On Sacred Grounds: An Indigenized Decolonized Educational Research Paradigm For Use In Contemporary Globalized Schooling Systems, Estella Valles
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Presented in this work is an adapted quantitative research paradigm for use in the field of education, specifically designed for work with Indigenous/marginalized populations coined "Diachronic Research Methodology" (DRM). The model is grounded in a post-positivist, decolonization-model, that is embedded in feminist and critical race theory. DRM is presented as a counter-approach to the traditional empiricist, research methods; a process which, historically, has allowed for a limited and biased understanding of Indigenous/marginalized populations. DRM challenges Western epistemologies and worldviews which have promoted the idea of one-grand-narrative for all humans, a view argued as beyond problematic and unethical, particularly for Indigenous …

All Faiths & None: A Guide To Protecting Religious Liberty For Everyone, Elizabeth Reiner Platt, Katherine M. Franke, Keisha E. Mckenzie, Katharine Rhodes Henderson
Faculty Scholarship
Religious liberty rights have been immeasurably damaged over the past several years — often in the name of protecting religious liberty.
Government officials have embraced Islamophobic policies and rhetoric; shut the door on refugees fleeing religious persecution; elevated the religious rights of their political allies over the rights — religious and otherwise — of other communities; used religion as a tool of economic deregulation; and denigrated the beliefs of religious minorities, atheists, and religious progressives.
To achieve true freedom for those of all faiths and none, a complete overhaul of religious liberty policy, and a new understanding of what this …
Lockean Copyright Versus Lockean Property, Mala Chatterjee
Lockean Copyright Versus Lockean Property, Mala Chatterjee
Faculty Scholarship
Locke’s labor theory, the most familiar of property theories, has faced centuries of philosophical criticism. Nonetheless, recent legal scholars have applied it to intellectual property while overlooking these philosophical critiques. Philosophers, on the other hand, are largely absent in IP theorizing, thus not asking whether Locke’s resilient intuition is salvageable in copyright’s domain. This Article argues that Lockean copyright is actually far more plausible than Lockean property, for it avoids the most devastating objections the latter faces. It then defends a surprising doctrinal implication of this theoretical conclusion: a workable Lockean copyright favors rights far more limited than present law.
Why Should We Care About International Law?, Monica Hakimi
Why Should We Care About International Law?, Monica Hakimi
Faculty Scholarship
International lawyers are used to having their discipline dismissed. A conspicuous strand of thought in U.S. foreign policy circles — known as realist — posits that international law does not matter. Realists of course recognize that states and other global actors speak the language of international law. But they view this discourse as cheap talk or epiphenomenal. They contend that state decisions on the international plane are animated not by the dictates of international law but by material interests and power. States act consistently with international law insofar as they have independent reasons for acting that way. If those reasons …
Making Sense Of Customary International Law, Monica Hakimi
Making Sense Of Customary International Law, Monica Hakimi
Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses a longstanding puzzle about customary international law (CIL): How can it be, at once, so central to the practice of international law — routinely invoked and applied in a broad range of settings — and the source of such persistent confusion and derision? The centrality of CIL suggests that, for the many people who use it, it is not only comprehensible but worthwhile. They presumably use it for a reason. But then, what accounts for all the muddle and disdain?
The Article argues that the problem lies less in the everyday operation of CIL than in the …

A Mission Statement For Mutual Funds In Shareholder Litigation, Sean J. Griffith, Dorothy S. Lund
Faculty Scholarship
This Article analyzes the conduct of mutual funds in shareholder litigation. We begin by reviewing the basic forms of shareholder litigation and the benefits such claims might offer mutual fund investors. We then investigate, through an in-depth docket review, whether and how the ten largest mutual funds participate in shareholder litigation. We find that although shareholder suits offer potential benefits, the largest mutual funds have essentially forfeited their use of litigation. This finding is particularly striking given that index funds and other long-term oriented mutual funds generally cannot sell their shares when they are dissatisfied with company performance, leaving them …

This Article on Richard Fallon’s Law and Legitimacy in the Supreme Court focuses on public acceptance of the Supreme Court’s authority, what Fallon calls sociological legitimacy. After setting out Fallon’s accounts of legitimacy and constitutional argumentation, the Article looks at public opinion data and political science scholarship on the extent to which the Court’s decisions affect public acceptance of the Court. It then turns to the normative question of whether, even if the Court’s decisions may undermine its sociological legitimacy, that impact is a legally legitimate factor for the Court to consider. The Article argues that strategic consideration of the …

Holmes's Understanding Of His Clear-And-Present-Danger Test: Why Exactly Did He Require Imminence?, Vincent A. Blasi
Faculty Scholarship
For all the suggestiveness and staying power of his market-in-ideas metaphor, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes’s most significant influence on First Amendment law has turned out to be his notion that only imminent harm can justify punishment for expressions of opinion. This emphasis on the time dimension in the calculus of harm is now entrenched in modern doctrine. It is easy to imagine how First Amendment law might have developed differently had Holmes’s peculiar focus on imminence not been a factor in shaping how the freedom of speech has come to be understood in the United States.

Rev. J. B. Hawthorne, minster at Atlanta’s First Baptist Church from 1884 to 1896, said that women should not speak in church, and he expanded that to include women speaking in public on issues such as suffrage and temperance. This article examine Hawthorne’s take on women in the context of both Baptist theology and the rise of the New Woman in the South.
