Relational Rural Geographies, Resilience, And Narratives Of Small-Scale Fruit Farming In The Metropolitan Countryside Of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Felipe Da Silva Machado
Relational Rural Geographies, Resilience, And Narratives Of Small-Scale Fruit Farming In The Metropolitan Countryside Of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Felipe Da Silva Machado
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
This thesis analyses the processes through which farming and rural communities in transition economies build resilience in the face of changes to rural areas caused by globalisation and urbanisation. The study is based on analysis of how urban-rural interactions have affected small-scale farming in the metropolitan countryside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an area where land-use, economic and environmental policies and urban land speculation have prompted increasing competition between agricultural, industrial, residential and conservation land uses within a highly multifunctional countryside. To achieve this, the research examined the pressures facing farmers in areas affected by the metropolitan dynamics of Rio …
Eco-Engineering Of Coastal Infrastructure: A Design For Life, Kathryn O'Shaughnessy
Eco-Engineering Of Coastal Infrastructure: A Design For Life, Kathryn O'Shaughnessy
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Coastal urbanisation has driven humans to build artificial defences to protect infrastructure from rising sea level, erosion and stormier seas. Artificial structures are proliferating in the coastal and marine environments (“ocean sprawl”), resulting in a loss of natural habitat, species diversity and ecosystem services. To mitigate the impacts of ocean sprawl, the practice of eco-engineering of coastal infrastructure has been developed. A strong evidence base in support of eco-engineering is growing, yet there remain critical knowledge gaps. This work investigated the ecology of artificial structures and their ability to be enhanced in order to increase species diversity, addressing five knowledge …
Understanding The Fate Of Active Pharmaceutical Compounds In Waters Receiving Poorly Or Untreated Wastewater For The Development Of A Dedicated Environmental Risk Assessment Approach, Simone Bagnis
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The global increasing consumption and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is of a growing environmental concern. The inherently biological activity of APIs creates a concern of potential ecotoxicological effects even at very low concentrations. Such risk is particularly exacerbated in low and low-middle income countries (LLMICs) where it is common the practice of direct discharge of untreated wastewater (DDUW) into surface waters, which creates a heavily polluted area downstream, described as the “impact zone”. Little is known about the environmental fate of APIs in this area. Nevertheless, measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of LLMICs show higher concentrations than for high-income …
Controls On Stratigraphy And Architecture Of Shallow-Water Deltas: Examples From The Early Cretaceous Of Central-Eastern Spain, Grant Cole
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Deltas form where a river meets a standing body of water (e.g. ocean) and deposits its sediment load. They are sensitive recorders of the interplay of fluvial (river) processes, that deliver the sediment to the standing body of water, and wave and tidal processes that redistribute the delivered sediment. When basinal (waves / tides) processes cannot sufficiently redistribute the delivered sediments, river-dominated deltas prevail, which are fantastic recorders of autogenic (internal to the delta) processes that control its overall evolution and internal architecture. Allogenic (external to delta) processes, such as tectonics, can influence and modify the river produced architecture. Therefore, …

The Oral Care Experiences Of Palliative Care Patients, Their Relatives And Healthcare Professionals., Maria Do Carmo Bernardes Delgado
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
Background: Oral symptoms in a growing number of people receiving palliative care are often neglected. Dental professionals are not always involved in palliative care and research on oral care of palliative care patients is scarce. Oral care is often inadequately delivered to palliative care patients while oral health problems can affect quality of life. Aims: To explore the experiences of palliative care patients, their relatives/carers and frontline healthcare professionals regarding the oral care received or provided. Methods: Blogs and discussion forums were used as the data source. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Subsequently a qualitative systematic review was conducted. …
The Concept Of Confidence Of Older People Living With Frailty And Implications For Practice, Frazer Underwood
The Concept Of Confidence Of Older People Living With Frailty And Implications For Practice, Frazer Underwood
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
Background Our human world is aging. The prevalence of older people living with syndromes of frailty is growing too. Frailty syndromes, such as falls, immobility, delirium, incontinence and susceptibility to medication side effects, are leading causes of acute hospitalisation of older people. Confidence is recognised to impact on individuals’ physical health and mental well-being, despite it not being clearly expressed in the literature. Health and social care policy and practice now focus on frailty interventions to reduce long-term demands of this growing population. Understanding the relationship of the concept of confidence and its associated impact on the physical health and …
A High-Resolution Palaeoecological Study Of Land Use Change During Late Prehistory On Exmoor, Havananda Ombashi
A High-Resolution Palaeoecological Study Of Land Use Change During Late Prehistory On Exmoor, Havananda Ombashi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Palaeoecological studies have proven to make significant contributions to two large ongoing debates that include the influential power of climate and the impact of human land management on the vegetation patterns in certain areas in the UK and Northwest Europe. The need and importance for higher resolution vegetation reconstructions has long been recognised in the wider literature. The main focus of this research is to further understand the relationship between human behaviour, climate and land cover change on Exmoor, of which the upland areas are comparable with others found in Britain and Northwest Europe. High resolution records of pollen, NPP …
Assessing The Dynamics Of Soil Erosion And Sediment Transport Under Increasing Land Use Pressures In East African Rift Catchments, Maarten Wynants
Assessing The Dynamics Of Soil Erosion And Sediment Transport Under Increasing Land Use Pressures In East African Rift Catchments, Maarten Wynants
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
State-of-the-art environmental diagnostic tools were applied to further the understanding of the complex spatial and temporal dynamics in land use and land cover change, soil erosion and sediment transport in East African Rift Catchments. This contribution forms a blueprint for future studies using sediment tracing, radionuclide dating, Bayesian Mixing Models and soil erosion mapping, and their reciprocal integration in this challenging environment. An integrated quantitative assessment of soil erosion and sediment dynamics in the Lake Manyara catchment, northern Tanzania, revealed drastic changes in land cover, a tenfold increase in upstream sediment yield, and a fivefold increase in downstream lake sedimentation …
Heathland Restoration After Mineral Extraction, Mary Louise Lane
Heathland Restoration After Mineral Extraction, Mary Louise Lane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Restoration Ecology has been developed over the last 40 years in efforts to better understand how to restore, recreate or reclaim land damaged by human activities. Lowland heath is one of the more difficult habitats to recreate due to the complicated interactions of soil chemistry and plant physiology and structure. This study investigated the ecological restoration of heathlands at a china clay mineral extraction site in the UK. Assessment of historical restoration practices revealed that previous work carried out on the study site is not achieving Atlantic Lowland Heath (ALH) and that specific amendments might be necessary. Consequently, work carried …

The Sheeted Dyke-Gabbro Transition Zone: The Key To Unravelling The Palaeomagnetic Record Of The Oman Ophiolite, Louise Maria Theresia Koornneef
The Sheeted Dyke-Gabbro Transition Zone: The Key To Unravelling The Palaeomagnetic Record Of The Oman Ophiolite, Louise Maria Theresia Koornneef
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Oman ophiolite is a natural laboratory for the study of processes operating above a nascent subduction zone. It formed in the Late Cretaceous by supra-subduction zone spreading and shortly afterwards was emplaced onto the Arabian continental margin. Twelve massifs in the ophiolite expose complete sections of the Neotethyan oceanic lithosphere, including upper mantle peridotites, lower crustal gabbros, and upper crustal sheeted dykes and lava flows. Previous palaeomagnetic studies have suggested that the southern massifs of the ophiolite were affected by a large-scale remagnetization event during emplacement, which completely replaced original remanences acquired during crustal accretion. In contrast, primary magnetizations …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis allows the simultaneous examination of organisms across multiple trophic levels and domains of life, providing critical information about the complex biotic interactions related to ecosystem change. Here we used multilocus amplicon sequencing of eDNA to survey biodiversity from an eighteen-month (2015–2016) time-series of seawater samples from Monterey Bay, California. The resulting dataset encompasses 663 taxonomic groups (at Family or higher taxonomic rank) ranging from microorganisms to mammals. We inferred changes in the composition of communities, revealing putative interactions among taxa and identifying correlations between these communities and environmental properties over time. Community network analysis provided evidence …

An Assessment Of The Legality Of Fake News Within The Mainstream Media – With Specific Regard To Its Influence On The Political Climate, Ayesha Faraj Al-Nuaimi
Plymouth Law Review
This article aims to investigate whether the law and regulation provided by the government is sufficient in tackling the increasing issue of fake news (FN) ‘‘a false story that appears to be news, usually created to influence political views’’.2 An examination on whether increased regulation would restrict the United Kingdom’s tradition of a free, investigative press, will be comparatively analysed to serve a contrast in perspectives to the laxer attitudes of the American media system. With the rapid evolution of technology, the radical influence FN has on the political climate will likely increase. A 2015 poll showed that 41% of …
Can The Law On Sexual Consent And Related Rules Of Evidence Provide Adequate Protection To Vulnerable Victims And Defendants Who Are Subject To False Allegations? If So, Do Juries Jeopardize This?, Casey Chard
Plymouth Law Review
Sexual consent is a sociolegal principle that is designed to protect personal autonomy. This article will evaluate and challenge the legal concept of sexual consent and whether the current law is sufficiently designed so that it is capable to protect both vulnerable victims and defendant simultaneously in rape and sexual assault trials. A common theme throughout will be rape myths and how these can negatively affect jurors and as a result, raise the question, should jurors sit on rape and sexual assault trials?

Will The United Kingdom’S Exit From The European Union Have An Impact On International Arbitration Within The United Kingdom?, Hugo Persad
Plymouth Law Review
This article will aim to assess whether Britain’s exit from the European Union will impact arbitration. This is a very topical issue as no one can accurately predict what direction this will take as there are many avenues that need to be explored. As Lord Goldsmith QC suggests: "The success of London arbitration depends in no way upon the UK’s membership of the EU;"2 although, as the New Law Journal argues: ‘London will gain a distinctly competitive edge as a seat for arbitration in comparison to other European cities’3 in relation to the resurrection of anti-suit injunctions. Examination of the …
