Increasing Latino Participation Rates In The 2020 Census In Chelsea, Ma, Fabián Torres-Ardila, Daniela Bravo, Franklin Ortiz
Increasing Latino Participation Rates In The 2020 Census In Chelsea, Ma, Fabián Torres-Ardila, Daniela Bravo, Franklin Ortiz
Gastón Institute Publications
Having an accurate count of the city of Chelsea’s Latino population will require strategic organizing by government officials and community leaders. If there is an undercount of the population, especially of immigrants who live in Chelsea, there will be long-term and potentially devastating effects on the city’s political power and less federal funding to address the needs of its Latino majority. We hope the results from this qualitative study will inform policies and recommendations to increase the participation of Chelsea residents in the upcoming 2020 Census. We hope the results will aid in developing culturally specific outreach strategies to inform …

Abstract: Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of congenital brain abnormalities. Its consequences for pregnancies have made governments and both national and international agencies issue advice and recommendations to women. This study was designed to understand the impacts of Zika on women who were less directly affected and less vulnerable to Zika. Women were recruited from various locations in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Women perceived that public health systems placed an unfair responsibility for preventing health complications from Zika onto women who had limited …

The Brazilian state apparatus was reformed throughout the 1990s, influenced by New Public Management (NPM). NPM was embodied in the health care sector by the creation of Social Health Organizations (Organizacões Sociais de Saúde or OSS), private non-profit entities to provide welfare services. We performed a systematic review of the literature outlining the origins and role of OSS in Brazil. Our selected articles (peer-reviewed) cover the origins/performance of OSS and their services provision between 1998 and 2018, in English or Portuguese. Databases used were Lilacs, Bireme, Medline, Pubmed, and SciELO. We identified 4,732 articles applying a pre-defined set of descriptors, …

Public Policies For Drug Abuse In Brazil And The Us, Daniely Tatmatsu, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira, Zilda Del Prette
Public Policies For Drug Abuse In Brazil And The Us, Daniely Tatmatsu, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira, Zilda Del Prette
Gastón Institute Publications
The study’s objective was to discuss public policies for drug abuse prevention targeted to young people in Brazil and the United States. Brazil has formulated its policy with programs that are questioned at the international level on epistemological, theoretical, and methodological grounds. The authors conclude that social policymaking in Latin America is still permeated by dependence on central countries, since the tension between the prohibitionist and harm reduction policies persists in the policy provisions for drug abuse prevention under the National Secretariat for Drug Policies and the Ministry of Health and what is actually implemented. The article suggests pursuing autonomy …

The Invisible Prison: Pathways And Prevention, Margaret F. Brinig, Marsha Garrison
Journal Articles
In this paper, we propose a new strategy for curbing crime and delinquency and demonstrate the inadequacy of current reform efforts. Our analysis relies on our own, original research involving a large, multi-generational sample of unmarried fathers from a rust-belt region of the United States as well as the conclusions of earlier researchers.
Our own research data are unusual in that they are holistic and multigenerational: The Court-based record system we utilized for data collection provided detailed information on child maltreatment, juvenile status and delinquency charges, child support, parenting time, orders of protection, and residential mobility for focal children (the …

A Biophysical Investigation Of Stability, Ligand Binding, And Iron State Of Cyp102a1, Catherine A. Denning-Jannace
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are cysteine ligated Fe-heme monooxygenases that are found in all domains of life. In mammals, they have a role in xenobiotic metabolism and steroid synthesis, making them a fundamental requirement for survival. In addition, their ability to perform a variety of chemical reactions on an array of substrates makes CYPs highly sought for biotechnical applications such as wastewater remediation, production of potential drug candidates, and creation of drug metabolites. By mutating specific amino acids, these enzymes can be engineered to change their substrate binding profiles and achieve stereo- and regio-specific chemistry. While these mutations are essential to …
New Single Molecule In Vivo And Ex Vivo Methods To Understand The Physiological Effects Of Nicotine Use, Xu Fu
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The consumption of tobacco products leads to several health risks, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and many different cancers. Nicotine, the primary addictive compound in tobacco, acts on the cholinergic system through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which is believed to be an essential component of addiction. However, the lack of a complete understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of nicotine abuse is one of the primary barriers to finding potent therapeutics for smoking cessation. Single-molecule imaging is an ideal tool to study molecular mechanisms of protein and physiological changes both in vitro and in vivo. In this dissertation, our research …

Derivatization Of Stable, Soluble Redox-Active Organic Materials For Non-Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries, Thilini Malsha Suduwella
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
In screening active materials for redox flow batteries (RFBs) – in which solubility is important to raise the volumetric energy density – scientists are slave to trial and error, modifying organic molecules in an attempt to optimize (increase) solubility without compromising other important properties such as stability and redox potential. A trained chemist can often predict the trends of solubility with the structural modifications in the neutral state of the materials, but when it’s come to the charged state of the materials, it doesn’t follow the same trend as the neutral species and relative values are hard to predict. The …
Laser Ablation In Liquid For The Controlled Production Of Photoluminescent Graphene Quantum Dots And Upconverting Nanoparticles, Rosemary Lynn Calabro
Laser Ablation In Liquid For The Controlled Production Of Photoluminescent Graphene Quantum Dots And Upconverting Nanoparticles, Rosemary Lynn Calabro
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Photoluminescent (PL) nanomaterials play an important role in areas including displays, sensing, solar, photocatalysis, and bio applications. Traditional methods to prepare PL materials suffer many drawbacks such as harsh chemical precursors, complicated synthetic steps, and production of many byproducts. Laser ablation in liquid (LAL) has emerged as a promising alternative to prepare materials that is single-step, fast, uses fewer precursors, produces fewer side products, and has simple purification steps. During LAL, a solid target is irradiated with a pulsed laser source. The laser pulses cause plasma plumes of the target material to form which are cooled, condensed, and can react …
Uncovering Structure-Property Relationships Of Inorganic Nanomaterials Via Transmission Electron Microscopy, Melonie Thomas
Uncovering Structure-Property Relationships Of Inorganic Nanomaterials Via Transmission Electron Microscopy, Melonie Thomas
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The rapid increase of research in nanoscale devices and nanotechnology in the past few decades has revealed that nanomaterials may possess exceptional properties that are significantly different from the bulk counterpart, due to local rearrangements of the atoms at surfaces and defects. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is an indispensable tool when it comes to the characterization of nanomaterials, primarily due to its ability to resolve the local-structure of materials at the atomic-scale. To study dynamic processes, however, regular TEM experiments are inadequate, as they provide only before and after information rather than the real-time data essential to understanding a reaction …
Deconvolution Tools For Extracting Insight From Challenging Two-Flavin Systems, Dallas Michael Bell
Deconvolution Tools For Extracting Insight From Challenging Two-Flavin Systems, Dallas Michael Bell
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Flavoproteins have long been explored for their ubiquity among a number of metabolic and energetic reactions. The flavin cofactor has the inherent benefit of distinct spectral changes associated with redox transitions; however, the double-edged sword is incurred as these distinct signatures overlap and take up much of the UV-vis spectral range. Therefore, it is crucial to create a method to demarcate the expressed redox transitions for studying these systems. The first portion of these studies discusses the creation of a program that deduces spectra for redox transitions in a single-flavin containing model protein: flavodoxin. The latter portions discuss the application …
Structure, Surface, And Interfacial Modifications Of Carbon And Supported-Metal Electrodes For Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Conversion, Namal Wanninayake
Structure, Surface, And Interfacial Modifications Of Carbon And Supported-Metal Electrodes For Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Conversion, Namal Wanninayake
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Currently, the global emission of greenhouse CO2 is over 36 billion tons per year. Consequently, the atmosphere's CO2 concentrations have exceeded 400 ppm, which is the highest reported in the last three million years. The accumulation of CO2 is the most critical origin for today's climate change; thus, closing the carbon cycle is vital to reverse the detrimental impacts of climate change. Under this goal, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 into commodity fuels and chemicals via renewable energy is one of the most promising strategies to recycle CO2. Despite significant progress made in electrocatalysis, …

Local Control Of Resource Allocation Is Sufficient To Model Optimal Dynamics In Syntrophic Systems, Glenn Ledder, Sabrina E. Russo, Erik B. Muller, Angela Peace, Roger M. Nisbet
Local Control Of Resource Allocation Is Sufficient To Model Optimal Dynamics In Syntrophic Systems, Glenn Ledder, Sabrina E. Russo, Erik B. Muller, Angela Peace, Roger M. Nisbet
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Syntrophic systems are common in nature and include forms of obligate mutualisms in which each participating organism or component of an organism obtains from the other an essential nutrient or metabolic product that it cannot provide for itself. Models of how these complementary resources are allocated between partners often assume optimal behavior, but whether mechanisms enabling global control exist in syntrophic systems, and what form they might take, is unknown. Recognizing that growth of plant organs that supply complementary resources, like roots and shoots, can occur autonomously, we present a theory of plant growth in which rootshoot allocation is determined …
Predator-Dependent Functional Responses Alter The Coexistence And Indirect Effects Among Prey That Share A Predator, Kyle E. Coblentz, John P. Delong
Predator-Dependent Functional Responses Alter The Coexistence And Indirect Effects Among Prey That Share A Predator, Kyle E. Coblentz, John P. Delong
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Predator functional responses describe predator feeding rates as a function of prey abundance and are central to pred-ator–prey theory. Despite ample evidence that functional responses also depend on predator abundance, theory incor-porating predator-dependent functional responses has focused almost exclusively on specialist predator–prey pairs or linear food chains. This leaves a large gap in our knowledge as many predators feed on multiple prey, and in so doing, generate indirect effects among prey that can alter their coexistence. Here we investigate how predator-dependent functional responses in a one predator–two prey model alter the coexistence among prey and their net effects on one …
Assessment Of Faculty Acceptance Of, Behavioral Intention To Use, And Actual Usage Behavior Of Technology In Inquiry-Based Learning In Medical Education: Using The Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Of Technology, Max Carl Anderson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is an umbrella term used in this quantitative study to describe three different, yet related teaching methodologies: case-based learning (CBL), problem-based learning (PBL), and team-based learning (TBL). Each of these IBL activities involves a problem or situation for students in teams to find solutions. The problems to be solved have the most impact for students when they are connected to a real-life situation. While none of the three methodologies require the use of educational technology to be successfully implemented, there are situations where it could augment or improve content delivery. In medical education, situational problems for students …

Fiscal Triumvirate: Analyses Of Crowding Out From Deficit Spending, Of Domestic Migration From State Taxes, And Of The Irrelevance Of Credit Ratings On Municipal Debt Yields, Erwin John Antoni Iii
Fiscal Triumvirate: Analyses Of Crowding Out From Deficit Spending, Of Domestic Migration From State Taxes, And Of The Irrelevance Of Credit Ratings On Municipal Debt Yields, Erwin John Antoni Iii
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The crowding out theory originally predicted substantially large effects from government activity in a market, including the impact of deficit spending on the price of loanable funds, namely, interest rates. Initial empirical testing in the twentieth century showed these effects to be quite small but consistent, while later testing suggested that the theory was wrong entirely and that a phenomenon of “crowding in” is observed during periods of large deficit spending by governments. This dissertation contributes to the existing literature by accounting for the supply side of the loanable funds market. Incorporation of a measure of global savings saves the …

This qualitative study utilizes the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework to provide a holistic view of how language teachers demonstrate their TPACK in teaching listening and speaking in virtual worlds. Seven language teachers who taught in informal virtual language class settings participated in this study. The teachers’ TPACK skills were examined through archived online chat transcripts for each observed class, one-on-one interviews with each language instructor, TPACK and demographic surveys, observation notes, and class documents from the instructors. The researcher took several steps to code the TPACK survey data to identify patterns by comparing the mean …
Wading In A Glycan Sea: Investigations Of, And Developing Bioinformatic Tools For, Carbohydrate Active Enzymes And Gene Clusters In Prokaryotes, Catherine Ann Ausland
Wading In A Glycan Sea: Investigations Of, And Developing Bioinformatic Tools For, Carbohydrate Active Enzymes And Gene Clusters In Prokaryotes, Catherine Ann Ausland
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Carbohydrates are immensely important biomolecule found in all organisms on earth, serving roles in structure, energy storage, protection and/or cell signaling. Carbohydrates are composed of an immense diversity of linkages, monosaccharide moieties and substitutions making them likely the most diverse biomolecule on earth, as well as the most abundant, being synthesized by plants and algae. Carbohydrates are synthesized and degraded by all organisms on earth through the expression of carbohydrate active enzymes, or ‘CAZymes’. In bacteria, CAZymes have been characterized to cluster in with transporters, regulators and/or other genes in so-called ‘polysaccharide utilization loci’, or PULs, to degrade carbohydrate substrates …
Examining Boundary Conditions To The Attitude Consistency Effect, Dylan Blaum
Examining Boundary Conditions To The Attitude Consistency Effect, Dylan Blaum
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Research on the impact of attitudes on argument processing has found that attitudes and beliefs can impact evaluation and processing, but has not deeply explored boundary conditions to this attitude consistency effect. This dissertation investigates three types of boundary conditions to this effect: whether the quality of the argument matters (argument quality), whether the individual’s strength of that attitude matters (attitude strength), and whether the evaluative nature of the task matters (task).
In Experiment 1, I found some support for argument quality as a boundary condition to the attitude consistency effect. Attitude consistent arguments were rated as higher quality/stronger than …
Elementary School Teacher Characteristics Associated With Self-Efficacy For Using Technology To Implement Constructivist Content Instruction: An Explanatory Correlational Study, Patricia Barton
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Technology mediated constructivist practices may be effective, but there are challenges for implementing them, and one challenge is the teachers themselves and their self-efficacy. Teachers of different backgrounds may differ on self-efficacy in technology mediated constructivist practices, and those possible differences can warrant different training approaches. For this study, 212 K-5 teachers from small to medium sized rural and suburban school districts in the Midwestern US, as well as teachers from a variety of other geographic areas, completed an online survey. The dependent variable self-efficacy in Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (SE-C-TPACK) was regressed on the independent variables. The independent …
Identifying Barriers Faced By Adult Learners In General Educational Development Programs, Matthew Patrick Beasland
Identifying Barriers Faced By Adult Learners In General Educational Development Programs, Matthew Patrick Beasland
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
It is estimated that 70% of all newly created jobs in Illinois by 2020 will need education beyond a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma. In Illinois, 12% of adults 25 and older do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Individuals without a high school diploma or GED are twice as likely to be unemployed and if they are employed are more likely to be in a low-wage position. On average an individual without a high school diploma or GED will earn roughly $10,000 less annually. Given the increasing need for a high school …
