Tap For The Times: A Study Of Contemporary Tap Dance, Elise Wilham Jan 2020

Tap For The Times: A Study Of Contemporary Tap Dance, Elise Wilham

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Tap dance is an American art form that began with the blending of traditional dance styles from English and Irish immigrants and African slaves. Throughout the 20th century, tap dance developed many styles in response to cultural changes that took place. Contemporary tap dance emerged in the latter half of that century and continues developing today with the fusion of other dance genres and new technologies. This research examines tap dance history to create an understanding of how it developed through a historical lens and analyzes the current approaches applied to the artform along with the characteristics and creative processes …

Timing And Factors That Contribute To The Decision Making Process On The Mode Of Delivery After One Previous Casearean Section., Sylvia Nyanyu Mruttu Jan 2020

Timing And Factors That Contribute To The Decision Making Process On The Mode Of Delivery After One Previous Casearean Section., Sylvia Nyanyu Mruttu

Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background: The rates of caesarean sections have continued to rise despite public and professional concern. This has continually increased the proportion of the obstetric population with a history of previous caesarean delivery. These women may be offered either elective repeat caesarean section (ERCS) or planned vaginal birth after caesarean delivery (VBAC). This study aimed to identify the timing, level of knowledge and factors that influence the decision-making. Objectives: The primary objective was to elicit the factors that contribute to women to choose VBAC or ERCS. The secondary objectives were to determine the timing of this decision, measure the level of …

Effects Of Sleep Deprivation And The Link To Alzheimer’S Disease In Night Shift Workers, Aracelia Aldrete Jan 2020

Effects Of Sleep Deprivation And The Link To Alzheimer’S Disease In Night Shift Workers, Aracelia Aldrete

CMC Senior Theses

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a degenerative neurologic disorder that is often defined by beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques. These Aβ plaques are formed from protein pieces that are incorrectly cleaved from an amyloid precursor protein (APP). These protein segments, cleaved from APP, are toxic due to increased “stickiness”. They cling together to create protofibrils that eventually mature into neuronal plaques. Aβ plaques lead to neuronal cell death causing classic AD symptoms: memory loss, a decline in speech and motor control, and personality changes. One connection between high Aβ plaques levels and AD is chronic sleep loss or disruption. Night shift workers, even …

Aristotle And Mutual Accountability: A Just Theory Of Punishment, Dina Rosin Jan 2020

Aristotle And Mutual Accountability: A Just Theory Of Punishment, Dina Rosin

CMC Senior Theses

How can citizens of a moral community both be held accountable and be accountable for their actions and their character? What is the role of both the state and the citizen in restoring accountability? In this thesis, I apply Aristotle’s conception of virtue to Stephen Darwall and William Darwall’s mutual accountability framework for punishment. I present a theory of punishment that creates an obligation on both the state and the citizen to uphold virtue and be accountable, and posits rehabituation of character as a necessary component of maintaining mutual accountability. I then apply this theory to a paradigmatic case that …

Outcomes Of Resistance Exercise Training In Adults With Acute Burn Injury, Paul M. Gittings Jan 2020

Outcomes Of Resistance Exercise Training In Adults With Acute Burn Injury, Paul M. Gittings

Theses

Decreased quality-of-life and impairments in physical function, muscle strength and muscle volume are known complications of a burn injury. As such, rehabilitation is an important aspect of the burn care journey. Rehabilitation of burn injury is currently hampered by a lack of tools to reliably measure muscle strength and lower limb function, as well as an incomplete understanding of the effect of resistance training after a burn injury. Specifically, there is currently no data on the safety or efficacy of resistance training immediately after a burn injury.

The series of studies presented in this thesis aimed to: 1) systematically review …

Law, Race, And The Epistemology Of Ignorance, George A. Martinez Jan 2020

Law, Race, And The Epistemology Of Ignorance, George A. Martinez

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Philosophers and other theorists have developed the field of epistemology which is the study of human knowledge. Critical race theorists have begun to explore how epistemological theory and insights may illuminate the study of race, including the analysis of race and the law. Such use of epistemology is appropriate because theoretical work on knowledge can be used to advance one of the key goals of critical race theory which is to understand how a regime of white supremacy and its subordination of people of color have been created and maintained in America. In this regard, philosophers and other theorists have …

Reducing Barriers To Accessing Fistula Repair In Nigeria And Uganda: An Implementation Research Study, Pooja Sripad, Elly Arnoff, Charity Ndwiga, George Odwe, Emmanuel Nwala Jan 2020

Reducing Barriers To Accessing Fistula Repair In Nigeria And Uganda: An Implementation Research Study, Pooja Sripad, Elly Arnoff, Charity Ndwiga, George Odwe, Emmanuel Nwala

Reproductive Health

Female genital fistula predominately affects women who are marginalized within their societies and lack access to quality maternal health care. While efforts to promote fistula identification and treatment exist, systematic knowledge about the barriers women face in accessing fistula treatment is lacking, in addition to rigorous evidence about interventions that effectively respond to these barriers. A partnership between the Population Council and the USAID Fistula Care Plus project implemented by EngenderHealth sought to understand and address critical barriers to fistula care in Nigeria and Uganda. The study examined whether a comprehensive information, screening, and referral intervention reduced transportation, communication, and …

Online Collaboration Platforms: Communication Implications For Workplace Virtual Teams, Anthony J. Paz Jan 2020

Online Collaboration Platforms: Communication Implications For Workplace Virtual Teams, Anthony J. Paz

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

As more organizations face the growing need to accommodate employees who are unable to work in a traditional face-to-face office environment, many turn to new computer programs that can connect all employees. These programs, generally referred to as online collaboration platforms, help to connect members of an organization while enhancing productivity and allowing work to be completed from around the world. While there is extensive research on the structure and nature of communication within virtual teams, there has been little research on the implications of online collaboration platforms on virtual teams. This study demonstrates how employees work with one another …

Media Manipulation Of The Israeli Palestinian Conflict In The United States, Alissa Kennedy Jan 2020

Media Manipulation Of The Israeli Palestinian Conflict In The United States, Alissa Kennedy

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This presentation looks to examine media-manipulation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the U.S., inlcuding implications in the form of public opinion and policy making. The focus is a history of the conflict itself by presenting it first through the lens of the U.S. using multi-mass media news sources before then presenting media based in the Middle East. By doing so an individual can note the inconsistency and categorical syllogism which occurs. It’s important to note, it is difficult to change the fundamental opinions individuals have of this conflict or others, but education on media manipulation can allow audiences the ability …
