Identity Development As A Pathway To Self-Authorship: A Restructure Of Neoliberal Programming Practices, Christopher Mychajluk
Identity Development As A Pathway To Self-Authorship: A Restructure Of Neoliberal Programming Practices, Christopher Mychajluk
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The original purpose of student affairs was to help develop the whole student outside of just academics. I argue that to develop the whole student, student affairs professionals must aid in students’ exploration of self-authorship. Student affairs professionals do this work by putting on programs that allow students to explore their identities. I explore how this work is compromised by neoliberalism and as a result silos students’ ability to explore their whole self. To mitigate this issue, I propose a two-part intervention that restructures student affairs programming budgets as one shared budget in order to facilitate the formation of large-scale …

Bonny And Read: A Musical Of Love And Pirates, Jared Scheetz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
A musical based on the lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two women that grew up in the early 18th century. Anne was born in Ireland to a father that dressed her as a boy in an attempt to provide her with more opportunities in life. Mary was born in England to a mother that passed her off as her dead son to receive inheritance money from her deceased husband’s mother. This musical begins when the two girls come of age and continue to use their ability to pass as men in order to better their position in the …

Adachigahara Project: A 3d Iterative Series, James Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This project tested an aesthetic use of 3D space to create alienation and immersion. It expanded upon it through iteration into other methods of cinematic alienation. To do this the project produced three short films each used the aesthetic of stereoscopic space. Two of the films were tested in conjunction with other methods of alienation while one served as a baseline. The project was able to render the spatial method of alienation and immersion, and found that other methods of alienation had an effect on it. While the project was able to test the use of 3D space to alienate …

Just Showing Up Can Make A Difference: A History Of The Association For Communication Administration, Christopher Lynch
Just Showing Up Can Make A Difference: A History Of The Association For Communication Administration, Christopher Lynch
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
The Association for Communication Administration (ACA), founded in Chicago in 1972, claimed a membership of one hundred and two departments. It was an independent organization but shared resources with what is now the National Communication Association. Initial membership included theatre and broadcast programs under the umbrella of communication. These programs would create their own independent associations. ACA’s mission was to promote the role of communication administrators, chairpersons to university presidents, in academia. It has weathered the ebbs and flows of any organization as it moves towards its fiftieth anniversary. A newsletter to the membership led to the creation of JACA …
Speech Communication At Iowa State University: A Departmental History And Aftermath, Luke Lefebvre
Speech Communication At Iowa State University: A Departmental History And Aftermath, Luke Lefebvre
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
In 1903 at Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a Public Speaking department emerged. This transition occurred over a decade prior to public speaking teachers seceding from English. Members of the department played foundational roles in establishing the national association and moving the discipline toward research-driven initiatives in order to secure legitimacy across academic landscapes. Surviving two World Wars, the Great Depression and title merger with English, the department again emerged as an independent academic unit prior to the 1970s. The department included faculty from areas of speech, drama, telecommunicative arts, and speech disorders, which progressed until its …

Jacob A. Riis: The Ideal American Citizen, Flemming Just
Jacob A. Riis: The Ideal American Citizen, Flemming Just
The Bridge
At his death in 1914, Jacob A. Riis was one of the US's best-known and most admired citizens, who had been able to effect more social change than most of his peers. President Theodore Roosevelt had earlier declared Riis to be "the most useful citizen of New York," and now called him "the ideal American citizen." In one of many obituaries of Riis we read:
Denmark gave him to us, and if we gave Denmark millions in return, we could not pay her for what Riis did for us and for what Riis inspired us to do. He landed in …

Introduction : From Performance Research To Performance Ecologies In Contemporary Thailand, Pornrat Damrhung, Lowell Skar
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This special issue of manusya explores the diverse ways that performance cul tures are embedded in cultural ecologies in Thailand today. This theme emerged from work done using performance research approaches in projects done around Thailand between 2017 and 2019. These projects discovered that perfor mance lives in cultural ecosystems, both producing new knowledge, skills and performances for those involved in them, and revealing how performance cul tures were locally-grounded living assemblages of creativity in diverse Thai communities.1 These results prompted arranging the first English-language conference in Thailand to focus on performance research and to further ex plore the ecological …

Performance Research Seen Through The Lens Of Cultural Ecology : A Case Study Of An Innovative Production At Chiang Mai’S Lanna Wisdom School, Pornrat Damrhung
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper examines a performance project called Kita Natakan Lanna (Lanna Music and Dance) done by the artist, Saran Suwanachote, or Khru Nick, a dancer in the Northern martial dance form of “Choeng,” at the local arts and culture center known as the Lanna Wisdom School in Chiang Mai. By working with Khru Nick and observing how he produced a new work for this project, I learned that he used an approach based on a local form of cultural life made of interconnected parts, and used the concept of Rabob Niwet or “ecology.” This system is used to …
