Railspace: A Geocritical Study Of The Railroad Through American Literature And Culture, Michael A. Smith Dec 2020

Railspace: A Geocritical Study Of The Railroad Through American Literature And Culture, Michael A. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uses geocriticism to argue that the American railroad is best understood as a set of discursively constructed railspaces formed through a variety of viewpoints, a polysensorial awareness of space, and stratified social relationships and power struggles. This study takes up four railspaces, the constituent texts of which demonstrate how intertextual discourse shapes and is shaped by the railroad. The observation car, charted through California Zephyr advertisements and Muriel Rukeyser’s “Campaign,” is an apparatus that produces perpetual spectacle. Three novels—Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain, and Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith—and …

Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell Dec 2020

Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This quasi-experimental case study examines the impact of theatre arts integration in an English-as-a foreign language (EFL) course in a competency-based international high school. Aiming to engage students in a process of deeper learning through drama, this study focuses on the domain of speaking and oral communicative competence. Although widely recognized as one of the most important college-and-career-readiness skills, oral communication is often overshadowed by high-stakes testing priorities such as reading and writing. In particular, many Chinese students of English struggle to achieve confident oral fluency despite years of study. This research was designed to investigate whether theatre arts integration …

Body Snatching In Philadelphia: A Social And Cultural History, 1762-1883, Timothy R. Dewysockie Dec 2020

Body Snatching In Philadelphia: A Social And Cultural History, 1762-1883, Timothy R. Dewysockie

Theses and Dissertations

In 18th-century Philadelphia the first medical school in the thirteen British colonies was established. However, cadavers for dissection could only be obtained involuntarily, a posthumous punishment generally reserved for murderers and suicides. Body snatching, the disinterment of corpses for dissection, immediately became a problem because legal sources of "subjects" did not meet demand. Body snatching was resisted in popular representations and the actions of everyday citizens in riots, petitions, and other forms of protest. However, in the late 19th century the requisition of "unclaimed" bodies for dissection - that is, dead "paupers" - became enshrined in Pennsylvania's 1883 Anatomy Act, …

Allan Ramsay: Romanticism And Reception, Murray Pittock Dec 2020

Allan Ramsay: Romanticism And Reception, Murray Pittock

Studies in Scottish Literature

Provides a review and interpretation of Allan Ramsay's career and reputation, and of scholarly and critical response to his work, exploring "the foundational nature of his contribution to the language of Scottish literature," reaching a wider audience, for Scots, his dominant role in the history of Scottish song, and the pivotal role of his writing, especially his ballad-opera The Gentle Shepherd, in the formation of Scottish romanticism, and of the wider romantic movement.

Networks Of Sociability In Allan Ramsay's The Fair Assembly, Rhona Brown Dec 2020

Networks Of Sociability In Allan Ramsay's The Fair Assembly, Rhona Brown

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the background, publication history, and significance of Allan Ramsay's poem The Fair Assembly (1723), about an elite dance gathering in Edinburgh, the social connections of its aristocratic patrons ("Directresses"), and its political and cultural implications, especially in connection with the continuing role of Jacobite and other anti-Whig and anti-Presbyterian sentiment in the nation's capital.

'Some Pastoral Improvement' In The Gentle Shepherd: Mediation, Remediation, And Minority, Steve Newman Dec 2020

'Some Pastoral Improvement' In The Gentle Shepherd: Mediation, Remediation, And Minority, Steve Newman

Studies in Scottish Literature

This essay shows how in The Gentle Shepherd Allan Ramsay engages in the complex work of "pastoral improvement" on an individual and national scale and foresees--to a point--how his work will be received in the decades and even centuries to come. After situating his work within the uprising of the Galloway Levellers, pastoral, and the early work of agricultural improvement, I consider how the concept of improvement shapes the reception of his work in the Linley-Tickell production of the 1780s--including a surprising appearance from the Shakespearean forger, William Henry Ireland--and the key role The Gentle Shepherd plays in "The Young …

Mapping Changes To The Songs In The Gentle Shepherd, 1725-1788, Brianna E. Robertson-Kirkland Dec 2020

Mapping Changes To The Songs In The Gentle Shepherd, 1725-1788, Brianna E. Robertson-Kirkland

Studies in Scottish Literature

Examines the varying ways in which the songs in Allan Ramsay's ballad-opera The Gentle Shepherd were published between the 170s and the 1780s, noting variation in how particular songs were titled, in which songs were included and how they were placed within the dramatic text, in which tunes were used for which song-texts, and in how words were related to music in editions providing both. The discussion is supported by extensive tables and lists of 18th century Ramsay editions, and illustrated with transcriptions of the music in two editions. Concludes that the addition of the music in later editions served …

Brian Reynolds, Public Visibility, And Gay Stardom, Finley Freibert Dec 2020

Brian Reynolds, Public Visibility, And Gay Stardom, Finley Freibert

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Once gracing the covers of numerous gay newspapers and magazines, Brian Reynolds was a key figure of Los Angeles’ emergent gay adult film industry of the late 1960s. He had all but disappeared from gay adult film historiography until he re-emerged as a cover model for a scholarly journal in 2012, to illustrate pioneering scholarship that initiated contemporary Pat Rocco studies. This article puts the story of Brian Reynolds in dialogue with critical star studies in order to offer a recovery history of Reynolds. Reynolds’ rise to celebrity and sudden relegation to obscurity underscores the historical instability of gay pornographic …

The Megaton Mission : The Role Of The Nuclear Arms Race In 1950s British Imperialism, Joseph David Daniel Holding

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In August 1945, the Pacific theatre of the Second World War came to a dramatic close with the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following this, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union grew tremendously and the two superpowers set about developing even more destructive bombs in case these tensions reached a breaking point. The nuclear bomb came to symbolise power in the post-war era. However, they were not the only powers with nuclear programmes in the 1950s. Churchill, and successive Conservative governments, were keen in joining the nuclear arms race. Operation Grapple was …
